The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the next stretch at Cobblestones. It’s a consistent reef break, and it’s going to be on the serious side for most of this run, so bring your A-game and your biggest board if you’re paddling out. The water’s sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – a nice little bonus.

The next couple of days are all about size and raw power, but the wind is going to mess with the surface. Tuesday the 18th has solid 15ft WSW groundswell, but it’s cross-onshore and lumpy, so it’s messy and not worth the hassle. Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th clean up a bit with onshore winds from the SW, but it’s still big – around 15ft to 16ft – and the conditions are only marginal, with a strong surge of energy (up to 11166). This is powerful stuff.

The first real standout for me is Friday the 21st. The wind drops to nothing – glassy – with a solid 12ft SW groundswell still pumping in. It’s a big, clean day and the energy is still strong (5192). It’s expert territory for sure, but if you can handle it, it’ll be worth the paddle. Saturday morning the 22nd is also glassy with a similar 10ft SW swell, and the energy is still solid (4471), making it another good window before the wind picks up again.

After that, things get pretty ordinary for a while. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are blown out and choppy, and we lose most of the size. The swell dips, but it’s just not clean.

Then we get a proper run of wind and energy. Tuesday the 25th sees a jump back to 13ft-16ft, but it’s onshore and stormy, so it’s a write-off. Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th bring more big SW swell (over 13ft) with onshore wind again, so it's still messy and not for the faint-hearted.

But keep your eyes on the end of the period. Friday the 28th morning finally shows some light offshore ENE wind and a 7ft WSW groundswell with a very long 19-second period. It’s cleaner and more manageable, a nice change of pace. Saturday the 29th afternoon is a real highlight – glassy, with a clean 10ft WSW swell (energy at 4448). That’s a great, open face for experienced surfers.

And then the big one. By Sunday the 30th, the offshore NE wind kicks in and holds through the afternoon, with a solid 13ft WSW groundswell and strong energy (9912). The morning’s good, but the afternoon is called exceptional for experts – clean, offshore, and powerful. This is the standout of the whole stretch.

Monday the 31st is just too big – 18ft – so while the wind and tide are favorable, it’s only for the brave (or the crazy), and it’s mostly going to be a close-out. We taper off into the first couple of days of September, still with solid 15ft-16ft SW swell, but the wind turns cross-onshore again on the 2nd, so it’s back to being a bit messy.

So, in short: the best bets are the glassy mornings on Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd, and that epic offshore window on Sunday the 30th. The rest is a mix of too big, too messy, or just average.

Stay safe out there.

Rusty.
