The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Cobblestones.
First things first, the water is sitting at 67° – a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might get away with a thinner suit.
The first real action worth talking about hits on Wednesday morning, 22 July. We’ve got a solid 12ft swell pumping in from the SW, with a long 16-second period. That’s proper groundswell, and with the wind swinging light offshore from the E, it’s going to be clean. The combined energy is strong at 6537, so there’s plenty of push. This is a standout window for the experienced crew. The swell is over 8ft, so this is strictly for experts – big, powerful, and not for the faint-hearted. The offshore wind will keep those faces smooth, but with that long period, it’s best to be on your game; the sets will have some serious weight.
Wednesday afternoon holds in with a 12ft SW swell and a 15-second period. The wind goes cross-off from the SE, and the energy is still strong at 5300. Conditions stay clean, but the afternoon might see a bit more texture. Still, a solid day of waves.
Moving into Thursday morning, 23 July, the swell drops a touch to 8ft from the SW, but the period is still a meaty 14 seconds. The wind is offshore from the NE, so it’s clean again. Energy is moderate at 2528. This is excellent for experienced surfers – the size is more manageable, but still powerful. Thursday afternoon sees the swell drop to 7ft, with a light cross-off from the NE. Clean conditions with a slight air moving. Still a good session.
Friday, 24 July is a nice transition day. The swell drops to 5ft from the SW, with a 12-second period. The wind is clean, cross-off from the NNE. The energy is lower, around 859-912, but the morning is marginal, while the afternoon looks very good. Clean, smaller waves for the experienced crew.
Now, we hit a rough patch. Saturday 25 July and Sunday 26 July are messy. The wind is howling from the N and NNW, up to 25 mph, and the swell is confused and short-period. The waves are junky. Monday 27 July is a write-off – the swell jumps to 21ft and 16ft, which is way too big for Cobblestones. The energy is through the roof at 16499 and 20240, but it’s just dangerous. Wind and tide are favorable, but the swell is too big. This is more of a kite-surfing spectacle than a paddle session.
Things settle down again on Tuesday morning, 28 July. The swell drops to 10ft from the SW, with a 12-second period. The wind is a light cross-off from the ESE, and the energy is moderate at 2906. This is excellent for experienced surfers – clean, powerful, but not as overwhelming as Monday. Tuesday afternoon holds at 8ft, still clean.
Wednesday morning, 29 July is a standout in the second week. The swell is 8ft from the SW, but the period is a very long 17 seconds. The wind is glassy offshore from the NE. The energy is solid at 3386. This is a classic Cobblestones session: clean, long-period groundswell, with hardly a breath of wind. For experienced surfers, this is a dream. The long period means the waves will be lined up and powerful, but at a point break like this, it’s money.
Thursday 30 July and Friday 31 July see the swell drop to 4ft to 6ft, but the period stays long (16-17 seconds), and the winds are light and favorable. Clean, small waves for the experienced.
The real long-range standout is Saturday morning, 1 August. The swell is 8ft from the WSW, with a very long 18-second period. The wind is glassy. The energy is strong at 4222. This is a promising setup, but it’s a week and a half away, so keep an eye on it. Saturday afternoon gets even better with a 10ft WSW swell and glassy conditions. Expert territory.
Sunday, 2 August holds 10ft with a 16-second period, but the wind is a stronger cross-off. Clean, but not as magical as the day before.
Then Monday, 3 August sees the wind go onshore and the swell drop, so the run ends.
Best on offer: The standout windows are Wednesday morning, 22 July and Wednesday morning, 29 July. Both offer big, powerful, clean SW groundswell with offshore winds. For the big wave chargers, 22 July is the one. For those who want a slightly more manageable size with incredible clean conditions, 29 July is a gem.
