The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got one spot on the radar for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a proper reef setup for the advanced crew only.
The forecast kicks off on Monday, 24 August, but don’t get too excited just yet. The early part of the week is a write-off. Monday morning sees a 10 ft SW swell with a moderate 13-second period, but that cross-shore wind at 9 mph is gonna mess it up, leaving a slight cross-chop. The afternoon gets worse – wind bumps up to 12 mph cross-on, dropping the swell to 8 ft, and it’s just choppy and poor. Tuesday and Wednesday are no better, with strong winds and messy conditions. Wednesday morning actually has a massive 16 ft SW swell rolling in with an 18-second period, and the combined energy is a whopping 17010 – that’s very strong, but the word is it’s just too big for this break. We’re talking expert-only territory, and even then, the cross-on wind at 12 mph makes it a no-go.
Thursday 27 August is still a bit rough, with a 13 ft SW swell and 15-second period, but the wind is cross-on and choppy. By Thursday afternoon, we get a bit of a reprieve with an 12 ft SW swell and a cross-shore wind, but it’s marginal.
The first real standout comes on Friday, 28 August, in the morning. This is the one to circle. The swell drops to 8 ft from the SW with a 12-second period, but the magic is in the wind: glassy. A slight air from the SSE at 3 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 1533, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. It’s going to be clean, smooth, and the reef will be working. Keep in mind this is an advanced, exposed reef, and it’s consistent, so there will be waves, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
The next real highlight is Saturday, 29 August, in the afternoon. The swell picks up to 12 ft from the SW with an 18-second period – that’s a long-period groundswell, full of energy (combined energy 6779). The wind goes cross-off from the north at 9 mph, so it’s clean. The forecast says “exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers.” This is the best of the bunch. The sets will be powerful, with long gaps between them, so paddling out should be easier. But with that size and power, it’s only for the experienced.
Moving into the next week, we have a stretch of clean mornings from Sunday 30 August through to Tuesday 1 September. Swells hang around 8 ft to 10 ft from the WSW, with periods of 15 to 17 seconds. The wind is cross-off and light, so conditions are clean. The combined energy is moderate to strong (3677 to 4303). These are solid, rideable days, but not quite the standout of Friday or Saturday.
After Tuesday 1 September, the quality drops off. The wind turns cross-on, and by Wednesday 2 September, it’s choppy and marginal. Thursday 3 September is poor, with onshore winds. There’s a gap of a few days with no real recommendations.
The next thing to watch is Friday, 4 September, in the afternoon. A 16 ft SW swell with a 16-second period rolls in, and the combined energy is a massive 13096 – very strong. The wind is a light cross-on at 9 mph, so it’s a bit bumpy, but it’s marginal. Saturday 5 September is a write-off with onshore winds.
Then, Sunday, 6 September, in the afternoon is a monster. An 18 ft WSW swell with a 14-second period, combined energy of 25436 – that’s extreme. The wind is cross-off from the SE at 19 mph, so it’s clean, but it’s too big for this break. Good for a look, not for a paddle.
Monday, 7 September, in the morning is another standout. The swell is 18 ft from the WSW, 14-second period, combined energy 12229. The wind is a gentle 9 mph from the east, cross-off, and it’s described as “exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers.” This is big, powerful, and clean. Only for the very experienced.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report.
So, keep your eyes on Friday 28 August morning for the glassy, clean conditions, and Saturday 29 August afternoon for the biggest, cleanest swell of the first week. The second week has a couple of huge, clean days, but they’re for experts only.
Rusty out.
