The Lowdown
Right, cobbers, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s lined up for us over the next couple of weeks. It’s not all smooth sailing, but there’s a couple of sessions that are going to be absolute crackers if you time it right.
We’re starting off with a bit of a wait. The first few days are a write-off, with strong onshore winds and messy, lumpy conditions. From Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 21st of July, it’s just not worth paddling out. The wind is all wrong, and the swell is chopped up. You’ll be fighting a losing battle.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 22nd of July, at Cobblestones (reef). We’ve got a solid 3.0m swell from the SW, and the wind is light and cross-offshore. That’s going to clean things right up. The combined energy of all swells directed here is a strong 4384, so there’s plenty of power in the water. This is one for the experienced crew, though, as that size is pushing into the zone where it’s a bit too much for beginners. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The pick of the week, however, is looking like Saturday the 1st of August. The morning session is clean with a 2.1m WSW swell, but the real standout is the afternoon. We’re talking a 4.0m WNW swell, with absolutely glassy conditions – the wind is basically non-existent. The combined energy is a hefty 4972. This is a big, powerful groundswell, and on a reef like Cobblestones, it’s going to be a thing of beauty. Get on it, but be smart about it. That’s expert territory.
The following Sunday, the 2nd of August, is also looking promising. The morning is glassy again with a 2.5m SW swell, strong energy at 4878. The afternoon gets bigger, hitting 4.5m, but the wind swings a little cross-onshore, so it won’t be as clean as Saturday. Still, the energy is massive at 9209 – that’s a serious amount of water moving around. It’s worth a look, but it’ll be a handful.
Later in the week, the 31st of July morning is a real sleeper. Glassy conditions and a 2.4m WSW swell, with excellent conditions. The energy is a solid 2997. A great option if you can sneak out.
The long-range stuff from the end of July into early August is keeping the optimism alive. The 28th of July has a clean, offshore morning with a 2.3m SW swell, and that’s a nice, manageable size. The 27th of July morning is also a good one, with a 3.0m SW swell and clean, cross-offshore winds. It’s a consistent run of swell, but the wind is the key – you’ll need to pick your windows.
The final few days of the outlook show a drop in size but still a few cleaner moments. The 3rd of August has a 3.5m swell, but the wind is onshore, so it’s more of a miss than a hit.
So, to sum it up: the first few days are a bust. Get your gear ready for Wednesday the 22nd of July, but the absolute gem is Saturday the 1st of August afternoon. If you’re an experienced surfer, that’s your day. Don’t sleep on the Thursday the 31st of July morning either.
Rusty.
