The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Looks like we’ve got a solid run of swell heading our way, but the wind’s gonna be a bit of a handful for most of it. The real window of clean, lined-up waves is narrow, so you’ll want to pick your moments carefully.
The first call is for Cobblestones on Thursday afternoon, August 20th. There’s a hefty 13ft SW groundswell rolling in, with a long 16-second period, so those sets will have serious push. The combined energy is pumping at 7196, but the wind is a cross-on 9 mph from the SW, making it choppy. The water is sitting at 66°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. This one’s for advanced crew only—no beginners out there.
Friday morning, August 21st, is where it gets good. The swell drops slightly to 12ft, still from the SW with a 14-second period, but the wind goes glassy—3 mph from the SSE. That’s clean, lined-up surf for the experts. The energy is still strong at 5427. This is your standout: the best balance of size and clean conditions on offer. Friday afternoon sees the wind swing back cross-on, adding ripples, so get it early.
Saturday, August 22nd and Sunday, August 23rd are a write-off for quality—the wind is up to 16 mph, choppy and messy. The swell stays around 8ft to 10ft, but the cross-on wind wrecks it. By Monday, August 24th, the wind lightens to a cross-shore 6 mph from the NNW, with 10ft SW swell and 13-second period, but the comment says it’s marginal. Not worth paddling out for.
Then we hit a big gap of poor conditions. From Tuesday, August 25th through to Thursday, August 27th, the wind is moderate to fresh, cross-shore or cross-on, with swell pumping up to 18ft on Wednesday, August 26th. That’s a massive 18ft WSW swell, with 18-second period and energy hitting 19568—but the wind is 12-19 mph, cross-on or cross, and the comment says it’s too big for this break. Kite surfers might be eyeing it off, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
Friday, August 28th offers a slight reprieve—cross-off wind from the SE at 12 mph, with 10ft SW swell and 12-second period. The energy is down to 2640, and it’s clean, but the comment says marginal. Worth a look if you’re desperate.
Saturday, August 29th is the second standout. Morning sees 5ft swell from the WSW, 12-second period, with a light 6 mph NNE cross-off wind. Clean conditions, and the comment says excellent for experienced surfers. Energy is 1180. This is a smaller, cleaner, more manageable option for those who can’t handle the big stuff.
After that, the outlook gets mixed. Sunday, August 30th has 8ft WSW swell with a long 19-second period, but 16 mph cross wind. Monday, August 31st sees 15ft WSW swell return, with 15-16 second period and gentle cross-on wind—marginal but possibly rideable with the right tide. From Tuesday, September 1st onward, the wind is onshore or cross-on, 12-16 mph, with swell holding around 12ft to 15ft. The comment says poor or marginal. Not looking good for the second week overall.
Bottom line: Friday morning August 21st is your best bet for big, clean waves. Saturday morning August 29th is the smaller, cleaner backup. The rest is choppy or blown out.
Rusty.
