The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
First off, the water is running a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, a solid 67° with a 3° anomaly. That’s a nice bit of comfort.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the cards, but it’s not all clean. The main event is at Cobblestones, a heavy reef setup that’s strictly for the advanced crew. This spot is consistent and exposed, hungry for a good SSW direction.
The pattern starts with a big pulse of swell. Wednesday the 19th kicks it off with a hefty 16ft swell from the WSW, but the wind is on it, so it’s a bit of a messy, blown-out affair. The combined energy is massive though, reading 9915 on Wednesday morning and 10770 in the afternoon. That’s a lot of water moving. Thursday is similar, still big but with onshore winds keeping things a bit chopped.
The first real standout window is Friday morning, the 21st. The swell drops to a still serious 12ft from the SW, but the wind goes completely glassy – dead calm, 0 mph. For a reef break, that’s pure gold. The wave energy is still strong at 5500. This is the one to circle. It’s an exceptional session for experts, with clean, powerful lines. Friday afternoon gets a bit of a cross-onshore breeze, so the morning is the call.
Saturday and Sunday the 22nd and 23rd see the swell ease but the wind turns cross-onshore and ramps up, making things choppy and pretty average. Not worth the paddle.
Now, Monday the 24th brings a change. The wind swings cross-offshore from the NNE, light, and the swell is still a clean 10ft from the SW. The energy sits at 2574. This is excellent for experienced surfers, offering clean, lined-up waves. The crowd profile says “sometimes,” so you might have a few out, but it’s worth it.
The middle of the week turns ugly again. Tuesday the 25th is a right-off with strong onshore winds and a rain shower. A big jump in swell on Wednesday the 26th, back up to 16ft, with a combined energy of 11799, but again, it’s onshore and lumpy. Too messy for a clean ride.
Thursday the 27th morning is a nice surprise. The wind turns cross-offshore from the ESE, light, with a 10ft swell from the WSW. The energy is still a solid 6918, and the conditions are clean. This is a solid option for the advanced crew.
Friday the 28th is a treat. The wind goes offshore from the ENE, moderate at 12 mph, with a 8ft swell from the S. The energy is 2211. This is clean, excellent surf for experienced surfers. The afternoon is even better with a lighter breeze from the E, clean and lined up.
The weekend of the 30th and 31st looks promising. Sunday the 30th is a standout in the longer range. The wind is cross-offshore from the NNE, the swell is 8ft to 10ft from the WSW, and the period is very long – 18 to 19 seconds. The combined energy is around 6500. This is a groundswell, and at a reef like Cobblestones, that’s a dream. The conditions are clean. There’s a bit of a risk of rain, but the forecast is exceptional for experts. That’s a big, powerful, clean session on the cards.
The first few days of September get a bit mixed again, with some strong winds and lumpy conditions, but the 2nd of September morning has a clean cross-offshore breeze and a 10ft swell, so keep an eye on that.
Overall, the best on offer is the Friday morning, August 21st for the glassy, clean 12ft swell, and the Sunday, August 30th for the long-period, clean, powerful groundswell. Both are for the experts, but they’re the ones to make the drive for.
Rusty.
