The Lowdown

Alright, it’s Rusty here, and I’m looking at a mixed bag for Cobblestones. This break is an advanced reef set-up, so it’s for the crew who know what they’re doing, and the next couple of weeks are a wild ride.

We start off with nothing worth paddling out for. Sunday the 23rd is a write-off – strong cross-onshore winds from the SSW at 12 mph, sloppy 8 ft swell, and the energy is just ugly (2766). It’s cloudy and choppy with no love at all. Monday the 24th tries to clean up a bit in the morning with a NW breeze, but the cross-shore wind still messes it up, and it’s a “marginal” situation. The swell size is around 10 ft but it’s messy.

Monday afternoon goes backwards, and Tuesday the 25th is a complete disaster with fresh breezes (22 mph) and an 12 ft swell that’s totally blown out – that afternoon gets a zero score. Kite surfers might have a look at that one, but for a paddle surfer, forget it.

Now, the standout. Wednesday the 26th. This is the big one, but it comes with a huge caveat. The swell is predicted to be 18 ft on the face, with a period of 18 seconds – that’s a very long-period groundswell (combined energy at a massive 19985). The wind is light and onshore, but the report says it’s “wind and tide favorable, but the swell is predicted to be too big for this break.” At over 8 ft, this is strictly for experts. This is a serious, heavy reef wave. If you’re not a pro, don’t even think about it. The morning looks promising if you’re a gun, but it’s dangerous.

Thursday the 27th drops off a little, still 13 ft but with a moderate cross-shore (SSE, 16 mph) making it lumpy. Not a great call.

Saturday the 29th brings a glimmer of hope. The morning session shows off 8 ft at 16 seconds from the SW, combined energy of 3402, and here’s the beauty – offshore wind from the East at 9 mph. This is a clean, off-the-bank wave. The report says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers,” and I’m calling this one of the best windows in the whole forecast, as long as you can handle the size and the reef.

Sunday the 30th is another expert-only special. The morning shows 12 ft of groundswell at 16 seconds, but the wind is glassy – literally “glassy” (NNE, 3 mph). That’s a rare, pristine window. The energy is pumping at 5562. This is a clean, heavy swell. If you’ve got the stones, this is the session of the run.

After that, it’s a slow decline into mediocrity. Monday the 31st and Tuesday 1st September are blown out again with cross-onshore winds. The early part of September sees some big swells but poor conditions or the break being too big. The 5th of September has a 20 ft swell but the period drops to 10 seconds, so it’s shorter period, though the wind is offshore. Better for bigger boards.

Finally, around the 6th of September, the forecast shows a monster 28 ft swell (energy of 40399!) and a very long period of 17 seconds. The report calls it “too big for this break.” That’s a warning. Leave that one alone unless you’re a tow-surfer.

So the true standouts here: Saturday 29th August morning (clean, offshore, good size) and Sunday 30th August morning (glassy, powerful, for experts). Everything else is for the brave or the foolish.

The water temp anomaly is absent from the data, so no news there.

Stay safe out there. The reef doesn’t forgive.

Rusty.
