Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cobblestones over the next 16 days.
G’day, this is Rusty. Alright, we’ve got a big window ahead at Cobblestones, and it’s a bit of a wild ride. The whole forecast is a story of powerful, groundswell south-west pulses, but the wind is the real enemy here. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 67° right now, so you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
The first good session kicks off Monday morning, July 13. The swell is a solid 13 ft from the SW, with a very long period of 16 seconds—that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is a massive 7227, so there’s a ton of power in the water. The wind is light and onshore at just 3 mph, keeping it rideable despite the onshore direction. This is a reef break, so that long period will line up nicely, and it’s exposed to the SW, so it’s catching the full force. It’s rated for advanced surfers only at this size—over 8 ft, so it’s expert territory. Crowds are possible here, so keep an eye out.
Tuesday, July 14, is the standout. The swell drops a touch to 10 ft, still SW, with a 15-second period, giving us a combined energy of 4309. The wind switches to a light NE cross-offshore at 6 mph, and it’s described as “clean.” That’s the magic window. The morning and afternoon both look excellent for experienced surfers. This is the session to chase.
By Wednesday, July 15, the wind picks up strong from the north at 25 mph, and while the swell is still 10 ft with a 17-second period (4536 energy), that cross-offshore wind is a gale. It’s marginal and messy. Thursday, July 16, has an 12 ft SW swell with a 14-second period, but the wind is cross-shore and then cross-on, introducing chop. The quality drops fast.
Friday, July 17, is a write-off. The wind near-gale at 31 mph with a 13 ft swell on the afternoon—it’s blown out, and the score is zero. Saturday, July 18, is a huge red flag. The morning swell hits 20 ft from the WSW with a combined energy of 34359. The wind is onshore at 19 mph. The forecast explicitly says it’s too big for this break. That’s for experts only, and even then, it’s dangerous.
The second week settles into a pattern of poor surf conditions. From Sunday, July 19, through to Tuesday, July 28, the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, often moderate to fresh, with chop and lumpy water. The swell hangs around 7 ft to 15 ft, but the quality is poor. A few slots on the 19th and 26th have light winds, but the swell is either too big or the wind is onshore, so it’s marginal at best. The reef will still hold the longer period swells, but you’ll be fighting the wind the whole time.
For the best, lock in Tuesday, July 14. That clean, cross-offshore wind with a 10 ft SW groundswell is the only real gem here. The Monday morning (July 13) is also worth a look if you’re an expert and don’t mind the onshore wind. The rest of the run is a battle against the breeze.
Rusty.
