The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks at Cobblestones. This is a solid, advanced reef break that needs the right conditions to fire, and we’ve got a real mixed bag ahead.

Right now, the water temp is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – you might not need the thickest wetsuit, but that’s a nice little bonus.

The window opens up with a massive pulse of energy on Wednesday, July 15th. We’re looking at a solid 10ft SW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, pumping a huge 4536 units of energy into the water. The wind is a fresh cross-off from the NNE, keeping things clean. This is a big, powerful swell though – well over 8ft, so this is strictly for experienced crew on the reef. The combined energy is strong (4536), and that long period will make for some proper, heavy lines. It’s not a perfect 10 out there, but the size and power are undeniable.

Thursday the 16th holds similar size (10ft) but the wind shifts to a gentle cross-onshore, so the surface will get a bit of texture. The energy is still pumping, but the quality drops a notch.

The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is Thursday, July 23rd. This is the pick of the month. The swell drops slightly to a more manageable 12ft, still coming from the SW with a 14-second period and strong energy (4334). The magic is the wind: a clean, moderate offshore from the ENE for the morning, and then light offshore from the NE in the afternoon. That’s glassy, groomed conditions on an already powerful reef. The surfline will be clean, lined up, and offering proper barrels for the advanced crew. The combined energy is strong (4334 in the morning), and with offshore winds, this is the best session on offer. The crowds at Cobblestones are likely to be *sometimes* present, but with conditions this good, expect a few more bodies out.

The preceding week has some solid swells, but the wind is a constant battle. Look at Saturday, July 18th – a massive 18ft SW swell with 9957 energy, but it’s accompanied by a 35 km/h onshore wind. That’s a washing machine. It’s not surfable, but if you’re into kite surfing, that kind of power with strong onshore wind is a dream setup. Similarly, the 13ft SW swell on Tuesday, July 21st is ruined by a 30 km/h onshore wind.

After the 23rd, the swell fades through the end of July and into the start of August. The energy drops significantly, with the swells getting smaller and the wind shifting back to cross-off or onshore. There’s a small window of clean, 5ft waves on Saturday, July 25th, but the energy is weak (828) and the winds are fresh. By Sunday, July 26th, it’s pretty much done, with a 3ft cross-shore mess.

Another big pulse appears on the 30th of July. A 12ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period and a huge 7592 energy. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SSE, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. It’s a distant possibility, but for now, that Thursday, July 23rd is the one to circle.

In short: the first week is a story of size versus wind. The second week starts with a bang on the 23rd, then fades. The 30th offers a late possibility, but it’s a long way off.

Rusty.
