Table - best surf conditions forecast for Cobblestones over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us at Cobblestones.
Right off the bat, we’ve got some solid, albeit a bit messy, Southern Ocean groundswell on the way. The water is sitting at 67°, which is a touch warmer than average for July, so that’s a nice little bonus. The first real action kicks off on Sunday the 12th, but it’s not going to be the cleanest with a cross-onshore breeze. We’re looking at 10ft of SW swell with a very long 14-second period, but the wind is making it a bit choppy. The energy is strong (5563), but it’s not a day to get too excited about.
Monday the 13th sees the swell push up to 13ft from the SW, with a 16-second period, and the energy is cranking at 7227. The wind is still a cross-onshore, though, so it’s going to be lumpy and a bit of a handful. This is expert territory at this size.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 14th is the standout. The wind swings offshore out of the NE, light at 6 mph, and the conditions turn clean. The swell is still a solid 10ft from the SW with a 15-second period, and the energy is strong (4135). This is a proper session for the experienced crew. The water is a little warmer than average, and with that light offshore wind, it’s going to be clean. Because it’s a reef break, that long period swell will be running beautifully. It’s an advanced wave, so don’t be fooled by the clean conditions.
Wednesday the 15th is a write-off for paddling. The winds are howling from the NNE at 25 mph, making it clean but howling. The 10ft SW swell is still there, but with that much wind, it’s going to be a mess. More of a kite-surfing setup if you ask me.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is a mixed bag of strong winds, rain, and messy conditions. The swell keeps coming, but the wind is all over the place. We get a few 12ft to 13ft pulses from the SW and WSW, but the wind is either cross or cross-on, making it lumpy. The 18th of July sees a massive 21ft SW swell with insane energy (31324), but the forecast says it’s too big for this break and the wind is onshore. That’s a hard pass.
The end of the outlook, from the 23rd of July onward, is a real bummer. We’ve got big swell again, 13ft to 16ft, but the wind is constantly cross-onshore, and the quality is poor. It’s going to be a choppy, blown-out mess. The 27th of July has some smaller 5ft SW swell, but with a gale-force onshore wind, it’s not even worth thinking about.
So, to sum it up: the only real window is Tuesday the 14th. That’s your best bet for clean, powerful waves at an advanced level. The rest of the time, it’s either too big, too windy, or both. Keep an eye on the forecast, but don’t hold your breath for the second week.
Rusty.
