The Lowdown
Right, cobber, let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Cobblestones. This is a solid, exposed reef setup that needs a good SSW swell, and it’s for advanced crew only. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 67°F, so that’s a nice bonus.
We’ve got a rough start, though. From Saturday the 18th right through to Monday the 21st, it’s a write-off. The wind is all over the shop, mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the surf is lumpy, choppy, and messy. The combined swell energy is massive – over 12,000 (12392) on Saturday afternoon – but it’s just being trashed by a fresh 19 mph westerly. Not worth paddling out.
Things start to look up on Tuesday the 22nd. The morning session is the real standout of the first week. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the ENE at only 3 mph, and the swell is a solid 10 ft from the SW with a nice 13-second period. The combined energy is pumping at 4306, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. The afternoon stays clean-ish but gets a light cross-onshore, so the morning is the pick.
Wednesday the 23rd and Thursday the 24th offer clean conditions with cross-offshore winds, but the swell starts to drop. You’re looking at 8 ft to 7 ft from the SW, with combined energy dropping from 2125 to 1688. Still fun for the advanced crew, but not a standout.
Then we hit a big gap. From Friday the 24th afternoon through to Monday the 27th, it’s all poor surf conditions again. Strong winds, cross-onshore, onshore, rain, and the swell gets messy. The energy on the 26th and 27th is huge – over 8,000 (8338) – but with 25 mph winds, it’s just a washing machine. Not for surfing.
The next real highlight is Tuesday the 28th morning. Another glassy session, with the wind dropping to 3 mph from the SW, and the swell comes in at 8 ft from the SSW with a 13-second period. Combined energy is 2594, and it’s described as excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a clean, powerful morning.
After that, the swell fades right down to 3 ft on the 29th, but with a very long 18-second period from the SW. That’s a groundswell, and it’ll be clean with cross-offshore winds from the N. The energy is low (around 1000), but it might offer some lined-up waves for those who know the reef.
The second week gets interesting. On the 30th, the swell jumps back up to 8 ft from the WSW with an 18-second period, and the combined energy is 6504. The wind is a strong 25 mph cross-offshore from the N, so it’ll be clean but very windy. That’s a powerful, fast wave, but only for the experts.
The real big one, though, is at the very end of the forecast. On the 31st of July, we’ve got a 16 ft swell from the WSW with a 17-second period. The combined energy is a massive 12,892 (12892), and the wind is light and onshore, so it might be a bit soft. But the size is there.
Then, on the 1st of August, it’s predicted to be too big for the break – 18 ft from the SW. The energy is over 16,000 (16026), and the wind is light cross-offshore from the NE. That’s a monster, but the file says it’s too big for this spot. The 2nd of August still has a 15 ft swell from the SW with a 15-second period, and clean, cross-offshore winds from the NNE. That’s a proper, powerful day for the elite.
Overall, the best on offer is the glassy morning of Tuesday the 22nd of July if you want clean, powerful surf, and the big, clean swell on the 2nd of August for the experienced crew. The rest of the window is a mixed bag, with a lot of wind-affected days.
