G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up at Cobblestones.
The next 16 days are looking pretty solid for an advanced reef break, with a lot of solid swell on the cards. There’s a bit of a rough start, but once we get into the second week, the quality really picks up with some classic conditions. The water temperature is sitting at 19°, about 0.9° above normal, so pretty average for this time of year.
The first real action starts on Sunday morning, July 5th, but it’s a write-off. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the SW with a 14-second period, but the wind is howling from the NNW at 22 mph, making it a cross-shore mess. The wave energy is moderate at 902, but the surf is poor. Not worth paddling out. Sunday afternoon gets a bit bigger at 7 ft from the WSW, but the wind swings onshore and the surf is marginal. A real dud start.
Monday, July 6th, things start to turn. Morning sees a 11 ft swell from the WSW, 15-second period, and clean cross-offshore winds from the SE at 16 mph. The energy jumps to 5663, so it’s ramping up. It’s a bit big for beginners at over 8 ft, but for the advanced crew, it’s getting interesting. Afternoon holds at 13 ft, still clean, and the energy hits 6698. This is where it starts to feel proper.
Tuesday, July 7th, is a standout. Morning delivers 11 ft from the SW with a 16-second period, light cross-offshore breeze from the SE at 6 mph, and the energy is a massive 6768. The forecast says exceptional conditions for expert surfers. That’s a long-period groundswell, so it’ll be a bit fat and straight at the beach, but on a reef like Cobblestones, it’ll line up beautifully. The best session of the first week.
Wednesday, July 8th, morning is another cracker. 11 ft from the WSW, 17-second period, light N wind at 6 mph, cross-offshore, and energy at 7146. Exceptional again. The afternoon goes a bit cross-onshore, so the morning is the pick.
Thursday and Friday, July 9th and 10th, see the quality drop. The wind turns cross-onshore and onshore, with rain and bumpy conditions. The swell stays around 8 ft to 10 ft, but it’s a mess. Not worth it.
Saturday, July 11th, picks back up. Morning has 13 ft from the SW, 14-second period, moderate cross-shore wind from the S at 16 mph, and energy at 6427. It’s a bit lumpy, but the size is there. Afternoon gets 15 ft from the SW, same direction, energy at 7867, still cross-shore. It’s big, so only for the experienced.
Now, the real highlight of the whole run is Sunday, July 12th. Morning sees 13 ft from the SW, 14-second period, light cross-offshore breeze from the SE at 6 mph, and energy at 9279. That’s a very strong wave energy. The forecast says exceptional for expert surfers. Afternoon is just as good: 11 ft from the SW, 17-second period, gentle cross-offshore, energy at 7725. This is the best day on offer. Clean, powerful, and long-period groundswell. If you’re an expert, get in the water.
Monday, July 13th, is still excellent. Morning has 7 ft from the SW, 15-second period, offshore NE wind at 9 mph, clean. But the real magic is the afternoon: glassy, with a 7 ft swell from the SW, 18-second period, and light air. That’s a very long period swell, so it’ll be a bit slower and more lined up at the reef. Perfect for a late session.
Tuesday, July 14th, holds clean with 10 ft to 11 ft from the SW, 16-second period, light cross-offshore winds. Exceptional conditions for experts.
The second week starts to fade a bit. Wednesday, July 15th, gets cross-shore and choppy. Thursday, July 16th, stays cross-shore and lumpy. Friday, July 17th, cleans up again with cross-offshore winds and 11 ft from the SW. Saturday, July 18th, is clean with 10 ft from the SW. Sunday, July 19th, is a loss with onshore winds and rain. Monday, July 20th, is cross-shore and marginal.
Overall, the best is Sunday July 12th, with exceptional conditions and huge energy (9279). Close second is Wednesday July 8th morning. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it’s a reef break, so there’s always a way to find your own peak.
Rusty.
