The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the radar for Cobblestones. It’s a reef setup that’s a proper handful on its day, but this forecast is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a long window ahead, 16 days in fact, so strap in.
Right out of the gate, the weekend is a write-off. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are seeing a solid SW groundswell pushing through, but the wind is chewing it up. You’re looking at a bumpy, cross-onshore mess with poor conditions. The swell energy is strong, with values around 4301 and 3617, but it’s all for nothing with that chop. Not worth paddling out for.
Then we catch a small break on Monday the 24th. The morning has some promise. A cross-offshore breeze is cleaning things up, and that 10ft SW swell is still got some push. Water temp is pretty average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. This is the first real look of the period, but it’s only for the experienced crew. That afternoon the wind swings and it goes ragged again.
Tuesday the 25th is a stormy mess. Strong winds, rain, and a building swell—just a full-blown washing machine. You’ll be surfing white water, not waves.
Now, Wednesday the 26th is a big one, and not in a good way. The model is showing a massive jump in swell energy, hitting values around 18100. That’s some serious juice, but the period is 18 seconds and the swell is 18ft. This is way too big for this reef. It's a washout, just a foamball for the chargers, and even then it’s dangerous. The wind is on it anyway.
After that beast, things start to settle. Thursday the 27th has a 13ft SW swell but the wind is still cross-on, making it lumpy. It’s on offer for the experts, but not clean.
Friday the 28th is where we get a proper window. A light offshore NE wind in the morning and a 8ft SW swell. That’s clean and grindable, a classic setup for the reef. Energy is moderate at 1602. This is a solid standout for a surfer who knows the spot. The afternoon is still okay, but that onshore breeze starts to creep back in.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th keeps the swell going in the 8ft to 10ft range, with the wind swinging cross-offshore. It’s going to be cleaner, still fun, but not with the same perfection as Friday. The long-period nature of the swell is a plus for the reef, giving it nice shape.
Then we hit a golden spell starting Monday the 31st. The wind drops to glass in the afternoon, with a 10ft WSW swell and a 16-second period. That’s smooth, clean, and grindy. The energy is strong at 4239. This is the other standout, a proper day for the reef.
From the 1st of September, the swell stays in the 10ft range but the winds are a bit more variable. The mornings look better than the afternoons. The energy drops a little, but there’s still surf to be had for the experienced.
The second week gets more tricky. The 2nd and 3rd have onshore winds and junky surf, a real drop in quality. The 4th is also poor with a cross-on breeze. By the 5th and 6th, it’s just onshore slop. The swell is still there—8ft to 10ft—but the wind is killing it. The long-range calls are less reliable, but as it stands, after the first week, it looks like a quiet period.
So, in summary: your best bets are the clean, cross-offshore morning on Friday the 28th, and that glassy afternoon on Monday the 31st. Everything else is either too big, too messy, or just average. This is a break for the advanced surfer, and it doesn’t like it when the wind gets messy. Keep an eye on that forecast for the 28th and 31st, those are the ones to circle.
Rusty, out.
