The Lowdown

G'day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

The outlook is a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of days where the wind or the swell size just isn't playing nice. We've got a solid run of surf coming, but you'll need to be patient and pick your windows. The biggest drama is the wind, which is set to be strong and from the wrong direction for a lot of the first week. The real standout looks to be a session around the 22nd of July, where everything lines up nicely.

Alright, let's break it down. Starting off from the 15th of July, we've got a 10ft SW swell with a very long 17-second period, but it's blowing a 22 mph cross-offshore wind. The wave energy is strong (4536), but those strong winds will make it a battle. The 16th of July sees a drop in the wind to a light breeze, but it's a cross-onshore, so the 10ft WSW swell (14-second period, 4291 energy) will be a bit bumpy. The 17th of July is looking rough with rain showers and a fresh cross-onshore wind, making the 7ft swell (12-second period, 1494 energy) a write-off.

The 18th of July is a day to sit out. We've got a big 18ft WSW swell (13-second period) on Saturday morning with a 25 mph onshore wind, pushing the energy up to a massive 10950. That's way too big for anyone but the most seasoned experts, and even then, the conditions are terrible. The 19th and 20th are pretty average, with moderate to fresh cross-onshore winds and lumpy conditions on decent-sized swells. The 21st of July is another one with an onshore wind and a 13ft SW swell, just not worth the paddle.

Now, here's the good news. The 22nd of July is the one to circle. Wednesday morning has a 12ft SW swell (13-second period, 6403 energy) with a light 6 mph cross-offshore breeze from the southeast. The report says it's *exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers* and a score of 7 out of 10. The afternoon is even better, with a 15ft SW swell (16-second period, 9129 energy) and a light breeze, scoring a solid 8. The wind is clean, the swell is powerful, and it's a reef break, so it should handle that long-period energy well. This is the standout. The 23rd of July is still good, with a 12ft SW swell (15-second period, 4699 energy) and a moderate cross-offshore breeze. The 24th of July offers a 8ft SW swell (13-second period) with a clean cross-offshore wind, good for experienced surfers.

After that, the swell drops off. The 25th of July has a 5ft and 4ft swell, but the wind turns onshore. The 26th of July into the 27th of July sees smaller, glassy conditions with a 3ft to 6ft SW swell, and the 26th afternoon has a very long 19-second period with a glassy wind. That's a special session for a point break or reef, but it's small. The 28th of July has a 8ft SW swell (15-second period) but a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore breeze, so it's clean but windy. The 30th of July brings a 12ft WSW swell (16-second period, 5366 energy) but with a fresh cross-shore wind and lumpy chop, so it's a miss.

Cobblestones is a reef break, so it's one for the advanced crew. It's consistent, but the crowds can be a factor at times, so keep that in mind. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual to report there.

Rusty.
