The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got one spot on the radar for the next couple of weeks, and it’s a proper reef setup for the experienced crew only.
The window starts with a bang on Tuesday, July 14th, with a solid, long-period groundswell rolling in. We’re talking a serious 10ft SW swell, with a very long period of 15 seconds, carrying a huge amount of energy (4309). The wind is a light, clean cross-offshore from the NE. This is classic, powerful reef-break conditions. The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. This is the best of the best on offer in the near-term. Tuesday afternoon holds strong with a similar 10ft SW swell and 14-second period, still glassy and clean. This is expert-only territory as the swell is well over 8ft.
Wednesday the 15th takes a heavy hit. The swell stays solid at 10ft, but a strong breeze from the NNE at 25 mph, while cross-off, will make it a battle. The forecast is marginal at best.
Then Thursday the 16th offers a glimmer. The morning is messy with a cross-onshore wind, but the afternoon turns glassy with a light southerly breeze. You’ll get a clean 10ft WSW swell with a 14-second period. Again, for the experienced surfer, that afternoon session is a standout.
The next several days, from Friday the 17th through to Thursday the 23rd of July, are a write-off. The wind is mostly onshore or strong cross-onshore, making a mess of the swell. The surf quality is poor, and the combined energy is weak to moderate. It’s a long, frustrating gap.
The light at the end of the tunnel comes on Friday, July 24th, with a promising morning. A 13ft W swell pulses in with a 13-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze from the N. This is big, powerful, and loud. The caveat is that the period is not super long, and the swell direction is a little west of the optimum, but the energy is massive (5357). It’s a big, heavy day for experts only.
But the real gold, the one you need to put a pin in for the long-range, is the final few days. Tuesday, July 28th afternoon, a 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period arrives under a light, clean cross-offshore wind. This is exceptional. Then, Wednesday, July 29th, is the absolute standout of the entire forecast. We’re looking at a 15ft SW groundswell with a 16-second period, combined with a light offshore breeze in the morning and glassy conditions in the afternoon. The energy is astronomical (10618 and 11768). This is a world-class, heavy reef session. It’s over two weeks out, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but this one has the potential to be the trip of the month. The break is consistent, so the odds are good.
Alright, that’s how it’s shaping up. The near-term has a couple of clean windows, but that last Wednesday is the one to dream on. Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
