Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Big Rock.
We’ve got a solid run of surf on the way, kicking off Tuesday the 7th of July and sticking around for a good stretch. The early action comes from a powerful SW groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds, pumping in at 11.5 ft. The combined energy is a beast (6014) – this is heavy, serious ocean energy. Tuesday morning looks glassy with a light ESE breeze making for clean conditions, but those waves are big. At 11.5 ft and packing that kind of punch, this is strictly for the experienced crew; beginners would be in over their heads. The water temp is around average for this time of year.
By Wednesday the 8th, the swell holds strong at 11.5 ft from the WSW, still with a very long period (16 seconds). The morning is a bit messy with a light cross-onshore, but Wednesday afternoon turns glassy and perfect for the experts. The energy is still massive (5241).
Thursday the 9th sees the swell back off a touch to 9.8 ft but the cross-onshore wind picks up, making things choppy. It’s a bit of a write-off.
Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th offer some cleaner windows. Friday morning brings a 6.6 ft SW swell with a cross-offshore breeze and clean lines, good for experienced surfers. Saturday morning is looking choice – dead calm, glassy conditions and a 7.5 ft SW swell with that long period. The energy is still moderate-strong (2022), a great window for a confident intermediate.
Sunday the 12th is a standout. The morning has a clean 8.2 ft SW swell with a cross-offshore breeze, and then Sunday afternoon delivers a cracking 7.9 ft SW groundswell with a super long period of 17 seconds and a clean cross-off wind. The energy is up there (5104) – this is the best combination of size, quality, and conditions of the whole outlook. Expect a few others in the water though, as crowds are sometimes an issue here.
Monday the 13th keeps the wave train rolling with an 11.5 ft SW swell (16 seconds) and clean offshores. Again, expert territory.
From Tuesday the 14th through to Monday the 20th, the swell sticks around in the 6.6 ft to 8.2 ft range, but the winds get messy. Midweek (15th and 16th July) turns ugly with strong onshore winds and rain showing up, making a complete mess of things. Thursday the 16th looks especially grim with 14.8 ft of WSW swell and howling onshores – that’s kite-surfing territory, not paddle.
There’s a notable gap of poor conditions from the 15th through the 21st. But, looking ahead to Sunday the 19th of July, there’s a glimmer. The morning turns glassy again with a 7.5 ft SW swell and clean conditions, giving the experienced crew a sneaky clean session amidst the chaos. By Monday the 20th it’s back onshore, and Tuesday the 21st stays lumpy. The very last entry on Wednesday the 22nd shows a massive 14.8 ft SW swell with a 17-second period (energy reading 11282!), but it’s pinned under a fresh cross-onshore – one for the tow crew or the kites only.
Best call? Get on Sunday the 12th. That afternoon session with the 7.9 ft SW, 17-second period groundswell and clean offshores is the pick of the run. Monday 13th morning is another strong expert option.
