The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what Big Rock has cooking for the next couple of weeks. We’re starting off with some serious size, but the wind is going to be a battle for the first several days. Hang tight, because if you’re patient and can pick your window, there are some absolute gems hiding in this forecast.

The week kicks off with a solid 10-foot WSW swell, but a moderate cross-onshore breeze has it looking pretty average and choppy. The combined swell energy is pumping at 3929, but it’s not clean, so Sunday the 19th is more of a look-and-see day than a paddle-out. Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st see the swell backing off just a touch to the 7-foot to 8-foot range, but the wind stays messy – onshore and cross-shore – keeping the quality low. The energy remains high (1568 to 2686), but the surface is just not cooperating. These early days are a write-off.

Now, Wednesday the 22nd is where it gets interesting. That’s your first standout. Morning session sees the same 10-foot SW swell, but we get a clean offshore breeze from the ESE at just 6 mph. The combined energy is roaring at 3469, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is proper size (over 8 feet), so this is for the crew who know what they’re doing. The afternoon sees the energy climb even higher to 4234, but a light cross-shore creeps in, so the morning is the cleaner call. Thursday the 23rd keeps the quality high with clean surf on a dropping 8-foot to 7-foot SW swell and light cross-offshore winds – another solid session for the skilled crew.

We hit a bit of a slump from Friday the 24th through to Sunday the 27th. The swell goes a bit wonky, the wind gets fresh and lumpy, and most of these windows get a big zero. On Saturday the 25th, with a fresh 22 mph cross-on and a 10-foot swell, the setup at this exposed reef is going to be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Big Rock is fairly consistent, so we know a better pulse is coming. It’s just a matter of waiting out this windy patch.

And wait we do, because Monday the 27th brings the next big standout. Another 10-foot SW groundswell (14 second period) arrives, but this time with a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SE at 9 mph. The combined swell energy is 3109, and the call is excellent surf for the experienced. The afternoon holds at a still-chunky 8 feet with clean conditions. Tuesday the 28th continues the fun with a smaller 8-foot, but the period stretches out to 20 seconds in the afternoon on a tiny 4-foot swell – that’s a very long-period groundswell, which will offer long, powerful walls but will be best for the reef and point setups to keep it from breaking too straight.

The very end of the month and start of August is where we get the real heavy hitter. Sunday the 2nd of August is the champion window. We’re looking at a 13-foot WSW groundswell with a 16-second period. The combined energy is a massive 11124 – that’s exceptional wave energy. And the wind? Glassy, with just a slight air movement. This is “call in sick and go” territory, but only for absolute experts. The morning is glassy and perfect for the brave. The afternoon sees the size drop to a still-chunky 8 feet.

Monday the 3rd of August closes out the run with a 12-foot SW swell, but a light cross-on breeze makes it marginal, so the previous days are the ones to circle.

Keep in mind, the water temperature is about average for the time of year, so a decent spring suit is in order.

Stay sharp, pick your windows, and don't fight the wind.

Rusty.
