The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s dig into what’s in store for Cintsa West over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a slow start, no doubt. The first few days are looking average with small, weak swell and cross-onshore breezes messing up the surface. The water temp is 65°, which is a bit cooler than usual for this time of year, so a solid wetsuit is a good idea.
The real standout window is shaping up around Tuesday the 25th through Thursday the 27th. Tuesday morning delivers a solid 5ft SW swell with a 13-second period – that’s proper groundswell, carrying some serious energy (1018, moderate to strong). The wind is a little cross-on, but it’s light. That afternoon, the swell bumps to 5ft from the SSW with a very long 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 1283. That’s a solid pulse of SW groundswell hitting the point.
Wednesday the 26th sees the biggest swell of the run, with 6ft to 8ft from the south, and periods holding at 17 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, so the point at Cintsa West will be the spot to handle it. The energy is huge – 2119 on Wednesday morning and a massive 4191 on Wednesday afternoon. That’s strong to very strong energy. But the wind turns onshore and choppy in the afternoon, and with waves over 8ft, that session is only for the experienced crew.
Thursday the 27th is a total loss. Strong NE winds at 22 mph are making a mess of the 8ft to 8ft swell, and the period drops to 8 seconds. That’s a no-go for paddling, but if you’ve got a kite, that’s where the action will be.
After that, we get a lull. Friday the 28th has a small 4ft S swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is light and cross-onshore, so it’s a marginal call. The weekend of the 29th and 30th brings some ENE windswell, but the wind is messy and onshore, so it’s not really worth getting excited about.
The next real highlight comes right at the start of September. On Tuesday the 1st of September, the early morning has a tiny 3ft SSW swell with a 12-second period, but the wind is light and cross-offshore, making it clean. That’s a rare, clean window, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll be waiting for sets.
The final standout is on Friday the 4th of September. A 7ft SW swell with a 10-second period arrives, with clean offshore winds from the SW. The energy is 1344 (strong), and the point will be handling it well. This one is promising, but it’s over a week away, so don’t commit just yet.
If you’re looking for the best of the best, I’d say Tuesday the 25th afternoon is the pick: 5ft SSW groundswell, 16-second period, decent wind, and the point handling it. For the bigger, more experienced surfers, Wednesday the 26th morning has the biggest swell (6ft, S, 17 seconds) with light wind – that’s your window if you’re comfortable in solid, powerful waves.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on the wind.
Rusty.
