The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the ocean’s got cooking for us down at Cintsa West over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so let’s break it down day by day.
The overall vibe is… well, it’s not going to be a classic stretch. We’ve got a lot of average, marginal days, a few windows where it cleans up nicely, and one or two mornings that look proper special. You’ve got to be patient and pick your moments.
Right out of the gate, Tuesday the 18th, it’s a bit of a write-off. Small swell, around 2.5ft to 3.3ft, and that wind is just not your friend—cross and cross-onshore. The water is a notable 63.5°F, which is 4.3°F colder than normal for this time of year. That's a real bite in the air and the water, so you’ll need the full rubber.
Wednesday the 19th sees a bit more life in the water. Swell pushes up to 4.3ft from the SSW with a longer 13-second period, and you can feel the energy jump to moderate. It’s still a bit cross-shore in the morning, but clean and clear skies. It’s a “maybe” day, not a “go” day.
Thursday the 20th is when things start to get interesting. The morning is still marginal at 4.6ft, but the afternoon is where it's at. The swell jumps to 7.5ft from the SSW with a 14-second period and the energy is strong. Wind goes light and onshore, but the size and period are pushing through. This is a step up, but the conditions aren't quite clean enough to call it a standout.
Friday the 21st, we drop back down. Swell around 3.6ft to 4.3ft, but that moderate cross-shore wind chops it all up. Not worth getting too excited about.
Saturday the 22nd is where it gets wild. The morning is rough, but the afternoon is a beast. Swell builds to a solid 13ft from the SSW with a short, punchy 10-second period. The energy is huge, but that fresh cross-shore breeze is going to make it lumpy and chaotic. This is serious, powerful surf—experts only. If you’re not on it, stay well clear. The setup is looking more interesting for the kite surfers than the paddle crew on this one.
Sunday the 23rd, the swell settles a bit but it’s still big. Morning is the pick, with 9.8ft of S swell and a long 14-second period. The wind is cross-offshore and it’s clean. This is a proper day for the point. Still big, but more manageable. The afternoon turns cross-onshore and chops up though.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 24th is your standout. The swell has dropped to a fun 4.9ft, still from the south with an 11-second period. But look at the wind: glassy. Totally glassy. The energy is moderate, the conditions are described as "very good" and it’s clean as a whistle. This is the pick of the whole run for the everyday surfer. The point at Cintsa West will be handling this nicely.
Tuesday the 25th is back to average. 4.3ft to 4.9ft of SSW swell, but the cross-shore and light cross-onshore winds just keep it from being clean.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are a real contrast. Wednesday is poor, with the swell all over the place and a moderate cross-shore wind. But Thursday the 27th morning is another little diamond. The swell is smaller, 3.6ft, but from the SSE with a long 14-second period, and the wind goes offshore and gentle. Conditions are “very good” and clean. A smaller, long-period groundswell is best for the point. This is morning is a promise, but it’s only 3.6ft, so it’s a longboard or a groveler’s special.
After that, it’s a bit of a flat, choppy mess for the next stretch. Friday the 28th through to Tuesday the 1st of September looks pretty lackluster. We’ve got some small, short-period swell mixed in with cross-onshore winds and occasional periods of larger, onshore junk. There’s a few days of swell, but it’s all pretty much shadows and chop. Not much to plan a session around.
The final week starts to show a pulse again. On Tuesday the 1st, we’re back to small, clean-ish conditions from the east, but it’s nothing special. However, Wednesday the 2nd of September has a late-season runner. The swell is a decent 4.6ft but with a very long 16
