Table - best surf conditions forecast for St Mikes over the next 16 days.
The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty checking in, and I gotta be straight with you—what we’ve got on the table for the next couple of weeks is a real mixed bag, and you’ll need to pick your moments carefully.
The only spot in the game is St Mikes, a reef break that’s fairly exposed and handles a SW swell best. The water temp is sitting right around 70°, which is basically normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
For the first few days, from Tuesday the 18th right through the rest of that week, it’s pretty grim. We’re looking at weak, short-period slop, cross-shore winds, and the combined energy is barely registering (46). It’s just not worth paddling out. There’s a long gap of poor conditions until we finally see something surfable on Saturday the 22nd in the morning. That’s a tiny window with a light WSW breeze and a clean look, but it’s only 2 ft and honestly, it’s ordinary.
The real standout, the one you want to circle, is Monday the 24th in the afternoon. That’s glassy conditions, a clean 3 ft swell from the south with a very long period of 15 seconds, pumping in a solid moderate energy (462). That long period means better shaped waves and more push, especially on a reef setup like this. It’s the best call of the whole forecast.
After that, things get messy again. There’s a lot of wind and chop, and the swell jumps up to 6 ft and even 8 ft on Saturday the 22nd afternoon, but with short period and strong cross-shore winds, it’s just a washing machine. The later part of the month, from the 27th into September, has some bigger energy on the charts (like 1119 on the 28th), but the wind is always cross or cross-on, and the conditions are either marginal or poor. It’s just not clean.
For experts, the bigger, more powerful swells late in the month could be interesting, but the wind never really aligns. The 5 ft to 6 ft stuff on the 27th and 28th is too messy for a good session. The 8 ft on the 22nd afternoon is only for the brave, and even then, it’s a mess.
If you’re a beginner, stay away from anything over 5 ft, and that’s most of the second week. The 3 ft glassy window on the 24th is your best bet.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off. The only real highlight is Monday afternoon, the 24th. After that, it’s a gamble with wind and chop. The second week has some powerful energy, but it’s more for the dedicated crew who don’t mind a battle.
Rusty.
