Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards.
Honestly, mate, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim around here. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, with a real lack of quality surf on offer. It’s not until Thursday the 10th of July that we even see something worth talking about, and even then, it’s a bit average.
The water’s sitting at about 73°, which is a touch warmer than normal for the time of year – that’s something, I suppose.
So, let’s start with the highlight. The best chance for a wave will be early on Friday the 11th of July at St Mikes. The swell is going to be solid, coming in at 7ft from the S, packing a strong energy (2242) with a long period of 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. Now, it being a reef break, that long period should work a treat, but the wind is a light cross-shore, which is okay. It’s not glassy, but it’s manageable. The crowd factor is there though – this spot sees people often – so get in early. It’s still a marginal call, but it’s the best we’ve got.
There is a tiny glimmer on Tuesday the 14th of July in the morning. Glassy conditions at St Mikes with a 4ft S swell, moderate energy (426) and a 10-second period. It would have been clean, but the swell is small and it’s not really enough to get excited about. The forecast says "expect good surf conditions," which is code for it being the best of a bad bunch.
Looking further out, Saturday the 18th of July morning offers another glassy window with small S swell (2ft at 12 seconds, energy 270). It’ll be pretty, but tiny.
Honestly, everything else is a write-off. We’ve got periods of moderate to fresh cross-shore and onshore winds, and the swell is often mixed up or too small. There’s a run of solid S swells around the 10th to 13th, but the wind is mostly cross or cross-on, leaving it bumpy and messy. For most of this, you’d be better off leaving the board at home. If you’re a kite surfer, some of those windy afternoons with a bit of size might get you going, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a tough watch.
Rusty.
