The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down for the imperial crew. The outlook for St Mikes is a long, frustrating wait, with just one short window that looks half-decent. The standout is next Wednesday, the 26th of August.

We start off with a bang on Sunday the 23rd, but it’s a bad bang. There’s a solid 10ft swell from the SSW, with a massive combined energy of 2838 (strong to very strong). But the wind is a howling cross-shore from the SSW at 15 mph, and the surface is a cross-chop. It’s just not surfable. By Sunday afternoon, the swell drops to 5ft, but the wind shifts to a S cross-shore at 12 mph, and it’s still poor.

Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are a total washout. The swell drops to 3ft, and the wind is all over the place. This is a waiting game.

Wednesday morning the 26th of August is the one. The swell is 5ft from the S, with a very long period of 17 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell with a moderate to strong energy (1359). The wind is a light cross-shore from the south at only 3 mph, which will keep it glassy. This is the best-looking window in the entire 16-day run. The caveat is that 17-second period is very long. At a reef like St Mikes, that’s usually a good thing – it’ll wrap in and have real power. But it also means longer waits between sets. The afternoon is a problem: the wind swings onshore from the east at 9 mph, and the swell jumps to 7ft. That’s expert-only territory, and the wind will junk it up.

Thursday the 27th is a mess. A strong breeze from the NE at 25 mph with a cross-shore will create a total chop. Friday through the end of the first week stays windy, with the swell struggling to hold any shape. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no worries there.

The second week is a sad story. Tuesday the 1st of September is tiny, with 2ft swell and a fresh breeze. Wednesday the 2nd has a 3ft SSW swell with a long period of 14 seconds, but the energy is weak (324) and the wind is a problem. The furthest we look, on Thursday the 3rd of September, has a 3ft SSW swell with a 16-second period, but it’s a cross-onshore. The only real hope is that Wednesday morning the 26th. That’s your window.

If you’re an expert, the 7ft on Wednesday afternoon will be a heavy, powerful wave, but it’s onshore, so it’ll be a battle. For the rest of the 16 days, the board is staying in the car more than it’s in the water.

Rusty.
