Table - best surf conditions forecast for St Mikes over the next 16 days.
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on at St Mikes over the next couple of weeks.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a quiet start, but a real gem hiding a couple of weeks out. The water is sitting at 72°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
The standout session is Saturday morning, July 25th. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. We’re looking at a sweet 3ft swell from the SSW, with a very long period of 18 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 729 (moderate to strong). The wind is glassy, dead calm with a light WNW breeze. That means St Mikes will be clean, lined up, and offering some real quality. Just keep in mind that with a period that long, the waves can be a bit too straight for a beach break, but on a reef like St Mikes, it’ll be holding its shape beautifully. The difficulty is advanced, so this isn’t a beginner’s session – it’s one for the competent crew.
Before that, there’s a long stretch of flat or poor conditions. The first real opportunity is Sunday morning, July 12th. We’ve got a 4ft swell from the S, with a 12-second period and 480 combined energy (moderate). The wind is glassy from the SE, which is offshore for St Mikes. That’ll be clean and fun, but it’s only a 2 out of 10 quality call, so it’s decent but not a classic. The afternoon turns light cross-onshore, and from Monday through to late July, it’s mostly cross-shore winds, lumpy, and small surf. There’s a brief window on Saturday morning, July 18th, with a 5ft S swell and 13-second period, but the wind is onshore from the ESE, making it a marginal, messy option.
By Wednesday, July 22nd, the swell bumps up to 8ft from the SSW, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s only for the hardcore, and it’s messy. The following Saturday morning, July 26th, sees a big 13ft swell from the SSW, but with a short 7-second period and a fresh cross-shore wind, it’s a lumpy, blown-out mess – more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
So, to sum it up: the first week is lean with a few average windows. The real prize is the glassy, long-period groundswell on Saturday morning, July 25th. That’s the one to wake up early for.
Rusty.
