The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the surf for the next couple of weeks.
It's a slow start, but we've got a weekend that's shaping up to be a real treat. The water temp is sitting at 71.8°, which is about 1.1° above the norm for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a nice, comfortable swim.
The real story is at St Mikes (a reef break). It's a bit of a slow burner Friday, with some small, poor surf. But hold onto your board, because Saturday morning is still a bit flat, but by Saturday afternoon, the wind goes glassy and we start seeing a pulse of 3 ft swell from the south. That's the moment things turn. The energy is picking up, with a combined energy reading of 310 (moderate wave energy). It's a slow start, but the glass is half full.
Now, Sunday is your standout. We're looking at a clean 3.6 ft swell from the SE, with a period of 14 seconds – that's a proper groundswell. The wind is glassy in the morning, and the energy jumps to 882 (strong wave energy). This is the kind of day where you paddle out early and don't want to leave. The SE swell direction is a touch off the optimum SW, but with that period and those conditions, it's going to be quality. Sunday afternoon holds up even better, with 4.9 ft swell and the same glassy conditions, energy hitting 910. That's your best bet. It's an advanced spot, so only bring your A-game.
Monday morning is still looking excellent with 5.2 ft swell and glassy conditions, but the wind shifts onshore by the afternoon, so it gets a bit messy. After that, the wind turns on us, and we hit a dry spell. From Tuesday the 21st right through to the end of the month, it's a pretty bleak run of poor surf and cross-shore winds. There's a big spike of energy on the 25th of July (1785 combined energy), but that's accompanied by 28 mph cross-shore wind, making it a complete mess—more for kite surfing than a surfboard. We don't see another decent window until the very end of the forecast, and even then, it's small and poor.
So, to sum it up: your window is Sunday and Monday morning. After that, it's a long wait. Conditions can always change, but for now, pencil in those dates.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 21°C on Sat afternoon, min 16°C on Fri night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummarySome drizzle, heaviest during Wed night.
