The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s take a proper look at what’s coming up for St Mikes.

Alright, listen, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for St Mikes. We’ve got a real patch of messy, cross-shore chop coming through, and the forecast is frankly a bit of a heartbreaker. There’s a lot of wind from the wrong directions, meaning the conditions are just not gonna be clean for any decent session.

The first real glimmer of something surfable – and I mean just *surfable*, not good – doesn’t show up until Monday the 24th. That afternoon, the wind finally drops off to a glassy calm. The swell is small, coming from the south at 3ft with a short period of 9 seconds, and the wave energy is weak (185). But, for a few hours, it’ll be clean. If you have a log, it might be worth a paddle. Don’t expect much. After that, it’s back into the grinder.

Then we see a bit more energy towards Wednesday the 26th. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the south, with a very long period of 17 seconds. The combined energy gets moderate (1009), which is more promising, but the wind is light and cross-onshore. It’s labeled as marginal. That long period stuff can be tricky at a reef, but it’s the best energy we see in the whole run. Still, it’s not a standout.

Honestly, the best window in the whole 16-day forecast is a stretch from late on the 25th through the 26th. On Tuesday the 25th afternoon, we get clean offshore wind from the ESE at just 3 mph, with a 4ft S swell and a very long 16-second period. The energy is moderate (596). It’s marked as marginal, but with that offshore flow and a decent south swell, St Mikes could actually line up. That’s your one go-to moment. Wednesday morning the 26th has a light cross-onshore, but the swell jump to 4ft and a 17-second period, with energy up to 1009, makes it the legit best wave of the entire run.

After that, it’s a sad story. The wind howls from the NE again and the quality just tanks right through the end of August and into early September. There is a gap of about a week with nothing worth mentioning. Then on Friday the 4th of September, we get a final flash of something – a 6ft south swell with a short 6-second period and light onshore wind, but the energy is only moderate (384). The period is too short for good shape, so it’s a miss.

In the end, there is no true standout. If I have to point to the only real hope, it’s Wednesday the 26th of August. That afternoon you’ve got 4ft from the south with a 17-second period and light cross-onshore winds. It’s the biggest, longest, most energetic swell of the entire forecast, and while the wind isn’t perfect, it’s the best compromise we get. The crowds are ‘often’ an issue here, and for that session, expect company.

To be honest, most days you’re going to want to keep your gear in the car. For the rest of the run, it’s a write-off.

Rusty.
