The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a run of surf coming up at North Beach, but it’s not all going to be firing. The first proper window to get excited about lands on the morning of Thursday, 16 July.
Thursday morning, 16 July is the standout of the whole forecast. We’re looking at a clean 5ft swell from the east, with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy – totally flat calm. That’s going to give you some proper, clean lines. The combined energy is sitting at a solid 562 (moderate), so there’s enough push to get you into some fun ones. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing crazy there.
After that, things get a bit messy. Thursday afternoon gets a cross-on wind and the swell drops a touch to 5ft, and the quality takes a dive. Friday the 17th, both morning and afternoon, are marginal with cross-shore or cross-on breezes and smaller swell around 4ft to 4ft. Saturday the 18th is a write-off for the morning – poor conditions with a 3ft cross-on chop. The afternoon brings a weird shift: a 3ft swell from the south with a 13-second period, but still cross-on and choppy.
Sunday morning, 19 July is a little better. Clean offshore winds and a 3ft swell from the SSE, but the period is a long 14 seconds, which can make it a bit tricky at a beach break like this. That said, the energy is still moderate (593). The afternoon is similar but with a stronger offshore breeze.
Monday the 20th is a washout – onshore winds and choppy. Tuesday the 21st morning goes glassy again, with a 3ft swell from the SSE, period 11 seconds, and moderate energy (411). That’s another good, clean session, but the swell is small.
Wednesday morning, 22 July is another little gem. Glassy conditions again, with a 3ft swell from the SSW, but check this out – the period is a very long 17 seconds, and the energy is 600 (moderate). That’s a proper groundswell with some serious juice. It’ll be clean, but because it’s a long period, the waves might break a bit too straight on the beach. If you can find a sandbank or a rip, you’ll be in for some fun ones.
After that, it’s a slow bleed. Thursday the 23rd through to the end of the month is mostly poor, with cross-on winds and small, weak swell. There are a few glassy moments, like on the morning of Saturday the 25th (3ft, 14-second period, 370 energy), and the morning of Sunday the 26th (2ft, 16-second period, 289 energy) – but the swell is tiny. The morning of Wednesday the 29th goes glassy again with a 2ft swell from the south, period 12 seconds, but it’s just not enough juice.
Overall, the best on offer is that Thursday morning, 16 July – clean, head-high waves with glassy conditions. Wednesday morning the 22nd is the other standout for the long-period groundswell, but it’s a bit more of a challenge. Crowds are possible at North Beach, so get in early on those days.
Rusty out.
