The Lowdown

Alright, surf’s up, or at least it’s trying to be. Let’s get into it.

We’re looking at a bit of a rough patch for North Beach over the next 16 days. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is right where it should be for this time of year, so no surprises there. It’s not going to be a total loss, but you're gonna have to pick your moments. The next week and a half are mostly a grind, with a lot of choppy, onshore conditions and only marginal, maybe-surfable waves. Then, there’s a glimmer of hope right at the end of the month, a Monday that’s looking like it could be the standout.

The first few days are pretty much a write-off. Wednesday the 19th is small and messy, with a gentle cross-onshore breeze. Forget it. Thursday the 20th sees a bump in size but the wind swings around and it stays marginal. Friday the 21st is more of the same, choppy and poor. There’s a bit of a pulse on Saturday the 22nd, but the swell is short-period and lumpy. Honestly, you might be better off doing something else.

Sunday the 23rd kicks up a bit more size, with a solid 8ft on the morning, but it’s cross-shore and the energy is all over the place (2063 combined). It’s not clean enough to be fun. The start of the next week, Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, still have some decent size from a longer-period S swell, but the onshore breeze keeps it from ever really coming together. It’s a lot of potential, but not a lot of delivery.

We pick up a lot of energy on Wednesday the 26th – the combined energy is strong (2391) – but it’s accompanied by a fresh, lumpy cross-onshore wind. That’s a hard pass for a paddle. It stays poor through Thursday the 27th, and Friday the 28th is only marginally better until the afternoon, when a clean cross-offshore wind shows up as the swell drops to a short-period 4ft. It’s a tease.

Saturday the 29th is another marginal one, small and clean in the morning but the swell is short and weak. Then we get blown out by a strong offshore wind on Sunday the 30th, which drops the waves right down to nothing.

Now, here’s the one that’s got my attention. Monday the 31st of August. The morning is looking good with a clean, light offshore wind and 8ft of swell from the ENE. The wave comment even says to expect very good surf conditions. This is the standout. It’s over the 8ft mark for size in the morning, so it might be a little much for beginners, but for the intermediate crew, this is the day to be out there. This is the one to circle. The rest of that week is poor again, with onshore winds and lumpy conditions, so make the most of that Monday.

All in all, it’s a lean couple of weeks. There are a few pulses of energy, but the wind just doesn’t cooperate. If you can only get out once, make it that Monday the 31st. And even though there's a lot of poor conditions, the spot is fairly consistent, so it shouldn’t stay flat for long. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye on it.

Alright, take it easy.
