Alright folks, Rusty here with the North Beach lowdown.
The first few days are a total washout. Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th have no surf worth mentioning – just weak, choppy junk with stiff cross-onshore winds. The swell energy is pitiful, so leave the board in the car.
Thursday the 9th finally gives us a pulse. A long-period south swell sneaks in at about 2ft in the morning, clean with a light offshore. It’s small but rideable. The afternoon adds a bit more size, up to 4ft from the south with a 14-second period, but the cross-shore wind makes it messy.
Friday the 10th is when things get serious. A big south groundswell arrives: 6ft in the morning with a 15-second period and 1737 energy. By the afternoon it’s 7ft and 16-second period – that’s powerful, long-interval groundswell. This is expert-only territory, with long lulls between sets. The wind is light, but cross-shore.
The standout is Saturday morning the 11th. The swell drops to a very manageable 5ft from the south, still with a solid 13-second period. The wind is dead glassy – flat calm, perfect conditions. The energy is still 925, so plenty of push. The water is 72°F, right on average for this time of year. This is the session to aim for. The crowds here are *sometimes*, so expect a few others out with you.
Saturday afternoon fades as the wind goes light cross-onshore.
Sunday the 12th is a mixed bag. A clean 3ft in the morning with offshore wind, but then the afternoon jumps to 6ft with a short 8-second period and a chop. Not worth the paddle.
Monday the 13th has another big pulse: 7ft in the morning from the SE with a 10-second period and clean offshore wind. That’s for advanced surfers only.
The real gem might be Wednesday the 15th. Tuesday the 14th is steady 5ft from the ESE but with onshore wind. Wednesday morning goes glassy with 5ft from the south, and the afternoon is a beauty – 6ft from the SSW, dead calm, glassy, with 1225 energy. That’s excellent for capable surfers.
After that, the second week (from Thursday the 16th onward) is a long, flat, choppy mess for the most part. A tiny glimmer on Saturday the 18th afternoon with glassy 3ft waves, but it’s weak.
Best bet: Saturday morning the 11th for the combo of glassy conditions and solid waist-to-chest high south swell. Second pick is Wednesday afternoon the 15th for clean, bigger waves suited to the experienced.
Rusty.
