The Lowdown
North Beach
Alright, Rusty here. We’re looking at one spot for the next 16 days, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some good waves to be had.
Water temp is about 72°, which is normal for this time of year, so you’re fine in a spring suit.
The week kicks off on Tuesday the 14th with a 7ft ESE swell, but it’s bumped up by a cross-onshore breeze. Not worth the effort. Wednesday the 15th is a different story. The morning is looking mint – a clean 6ft east swell with glassy conditions. The wave energy is moderate (728), and that light offshore wind will have it looking like a postcard. Good for intermediates.
Thursday the 16th is another solid option. The morning has 5ft of E swell with a longer 11-second period, and it’s glassy again. The energy is moderate (594). It’s a bit smaller, but the quality is there. Friday the 17th is small and clean, with 4ft of E swell and glassy conditions. A nice mellow day.
The weekend gets a bit messy. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see a south swell, but it’s weak and the wind is mostly cross-onshore. Still, Sunday afternoon the 19th cleans up nicely with a glassy 5ft south swell at a 12-second period. That’s a sneaky good session.
The big standout is Monday the 20th. We’ve got a solid 8ft south swell. The morning is a bit choppy, but the energy is strong (1575). By the afternoon, it’s 8ft from the south with a 12-second period, and the energy is very strong (2019). This is a big swell. At 8ft, it’s pushing into expert territory for the bigger sets. The swell direction is S, and the optimum here is SE, so it’s not a perfect match, but the size and power will get you barreled if you’re in the right spot.
After that, it fades. The rest of the week into the next (from the 21st to the 29th) is mostly small, weak, and choppy. There are a few glassy moments on the 24th and 26th, but the swell is tiny (3ft to 5ft) and the wind is often onshore. The last few days of the month (28th and 29th) are a total loss with strong onshore winds and short-period windswell.
Best bets: Wednesday 15th morning for the cleanest conditions on a solid 6ft E swell, or Monday 20th afternoon for the biggest swell of the period. That Monday is the one for the groms and the legends.
Rusty.
