The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for North Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the water temp is sitting at 71°, which is spot on average for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
We’re looking at a pretty slow start. The first few days are a bit of a write-off with marginal conditions and small, messy energy. The first real glimmer comes Thursday morning, July 16th. The swell is a clean 5 ft from the East, with a period of 10 seconds, and the wind is glassy. The energy is moderate (552), and the conditions are described as glassy. It’s a small window, but it’s the first honest chance for a few clean ones.
Friday afternoon, July 17th, is worth a mention. The swell drops to 4 ft from the East, but it’s glassy again and the energy is a quieter 263. It’s small, but clean. Not a standout, but a nice little session if you’re desperate.
Now, Sunday morning, July 19th, is a real treat. The wind is dead calm, glassy as it gets, with a 3 ft swell from the South at 11 seconds. The energy is moderate (340). It’s small, but that glassy morning will have the lines smooth and clean. This is a solid pick for a quiet, mellow session.
The biggest event on the cards is the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. A massive 13 ft south swell is forecast, with a period of 11 seconds and a massive energy reading of 3543. But here’s the thing, mate – that’s an absolute bomb. For a beach/pier setup like North Beach, that’s way too big for anyone but the most experienced, and even then, it’s dangerous. The wind is light cross-shore, but the wave comment says it’s predicted to be too big for this break. That one is for experts only, and I’d be very cautious.
The following week, from July 25th onwards, things get pretty ordinary. The wind is mostly a strong cross-onshore from the NE, making it choppy and lumpy. The swell is small and short-period, and the energy readings are low. There’s a slight chance on Saturday afternoon, July 25th, with a 3 ft swell from the SSW at a very long 21 seconds, but it’s cross-on and the energy is moderate (1037). That long period might make it a bit too straight for the beach, but it’s worth a look if you’re keen.
Overall, the best bet is Sunday morning, July 19th, for a clean, glassy session on the small south swell. The big Thursday morning on July 23rd is a massive, expert-only swell that’s just too big for this spot.
Keep your eyes on the sky, and the tide charts.
Rusty.
