The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it. We’ve got a long stretch ahead, and honestly, it’s a bit of a slow burner. The first few days are a write-off – wind is all wrong, surf is messy. We’re looking at a gap of about two days with nothing worth paddling out for before we get a real window of opportunity.
North Beach is the only game in town, and it’s a classic beach/pier setup. The water temp is sitting at 71°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real standout lands on Wednesday morning, July 15th. The wind goes glassy, just a slight air moving, and that’s a massive deal. The swell is a solid 6 ft out of the East with a 10-second period, which gives it some shape. The energy is moderate (740). It’s not going to be huge, but it’s going to be clean as a whistle. That’s the pick of the first week for sure – a proper long session with no wind chop.
Things get a bit chunky again on Saturday morning, July 18th. The swell bumps up to 5 ft from the South, but the period jumps to 15 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell, pushing the energy up to strong (1049). The wind is clean cross-off, so the face will be lined up. That’s a second standout, but it’s a week out, so keep an eye on it. That long period means it’ll be better for the point and reef setups than a straight beach break, but it’ll still have some punch.
Monday morning, July 20th, we get another one. Solid 6 ft South swell, 11-second period, and the energy is strong (1218). The wind is a clean cross-off from the SSW, so it’s another really clean session. That’s two solid mornings in a row.
After that, it drops off hard. The swell fades and the wind turns onshore again. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations. Thursday morning, July 23rd, there’s a spike of 6 ft from the SSW, but it’s a short period of 6 seconds, which is just windswell – it’ll be junk, and the wind is onshore anyway. Not your friend.
The last little flicker is Wednesday morning, July 22nd, with a tiny 3 ft swell but a very long 16-second period (642 energy). The wind is a light cross, so it’s rideable, but it’s really small. If you’re desperate and on a longboard, maybe.
So, lock in Wednesday morning, July 15th for the cleanest, glassy conditions. If you want more power, Saturday morning, July 18th, and Monday morning, July 20th, are your best bets for a proper push. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
