The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for North Beach. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming our way, but there’s a solid window to get excited about.
The overall pattern starts with a nice pulse of energy mid-week, then it gets a bit messy with onshore winds, but there’s a promising blast of groundswell to finish the first week and into the second. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild there.
The real standout is Sunday morning, the 19th of July. North Beach is cleaning up with a 6 ft swell from the SSE, and that 12-second period is giving it some real push and shape. The wind is glassy, dead calm from the ENE at just 3 mph. Expect clean, lined-up sets. The combined energy is pumping at 950 (moderate to strong), so there’s plenty of grunt. It’s fairly consistent here, but you might find a few others in the water – it’s worth it. This is the pick of the fortnight.
By Sunday afternoon, the wind swings cross-on and picks up to 9 mph, so the quality drops off fast. Monday morning, the 20th, still has some size at 6 ft from the SE with a 12-second period, and the wind is cross-off, keeping it reasonably clean, but the energy is high (1178). It’s a solid secondary option, but not as good as that Sunday glass-off.
Tuesday through Thursday of that first week gets pretty average. The wind is mostly cross-on from the NE, and the swell drops. Thursday the 23rd goes clean with a strong cross-off breeze, but the swell is a weak 2 ft from the SE, and then a 5 ft windswell kicks in with a short 7-second period – not worth the paddle. The energy is low (217) for the morning.
Friday the 24th through Sunday the 27th is a real lull. Swell is small, wind is messy, and the combined energy stays low. There’s a few days there with nothing to write home about.
But then we get a flash in the pan. Tuesday morning, the 28th of July, sees a clean, strong cross-off wind from the SSW at 22 mph, with a 4 ft groundswell from the SSW, period of 16 seconds. That’s a long-period groundswell, and it’s got a lot of energy (1093). This will be better for the reefs and points if you can find them – at a beach break like North Beach, that long period might make it a bit straight, but it’s still a powerful, clean wave for experts.
The big stuff comes at the end of July and into August, but it’s blown out. On the 31st of July, we’ve got a massive 7 ft swell from the S with a 15-second period, and the combined energy is an insane 3464 (very strong). But the wind is howling onshore from the NE at 25 mph, making it a total mess. The same goes for the 1st of August – big swell, onshore wind. This setup looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The final promising day is Monday morning, the 3rd of August. The swell is back to 6 ft from the S with an 18-second period, the energy is huge (2332), and the wind goes glassy again from the SSE at 3 mph. That’s a long-range call, so it’s promising but less certain. If it comes together, it’ll be a cracker for experienced surfers.
So, to wrap it up: Sunday the 19th of July morning is your absolute best bet. Clean, solid, and fun. Monday the 20th is a good backup. The long-range glass on the 3rd of August is one to watch.
Rusty.
