Alright, let's get into it.
Well, it’s been a bit quiet, but we’ve got a run of action kicking off this Friday, the 3rd of July, and it’s looking like a decent little window for the experienced crew. North Beach is the only spot firing, and it’s a beach-and-pier setup that’s exposed to the swell.
The main event is a solid pulse of south groundswell. Friday morning is the clear standout. We’re looking at a strong 2.5m (8ft) swell from the south, with a nice long 13-second period, and it’s delivering a hefty 2348 (moderate wave energy). The wind is glassy – dead calm from the south at just 5 km/h (3 mph). That means clean, smooth faces. The water temp is 22° (71°F), which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Saturday morning the 4th is also very good. The swell drops just a touch to 2.5m (8ft) from the south-southeast, still 12 seconds, and again we have glassy conditions with that light southerly breeze. The energy dips a little to 2078, but it’s still a strong, powerful wave. For both Friday and Saturday mornings, this is quality, heaving surf that’s going to be too big for beginners – this is for the confident intermediate and above.
Now, the downside. The crowds at North Beach are rated as “sometimes,” so you can expect company on these better pulses. Also, with that long period swell over 15 seconds on the Saturday the 11th (1.7m/6ft, 16 seconds, 1481 energy), that groundswell can get a bit straight and fat on a beach break, so those afternoon sessions on the Saturday the 11th with the clean cross-offshore wind might be better for a point or reef, but it’s still a solid option here.
The second week is a mixed bag. A lot of onshore and cross-onshore wind messes up the quality, and there are a few days with nothing worthwhile. The next real bright spot doesn’t come around until Friday the 17th. Friday morning on the 17th has a glassy 1.6m (5ft) south swell at 12 seconds (955 energy) – that’s a promising one to watch. The afternoon of the 17th gets a bigger 2.2m (7ft) from the south-southwest, but it comes with a light cross-onshore wind, so it won't be as clean as the morning.
Then on Saturday the 18th, the models are throwing up some serious size – 5.0m (16ft) from the south with a huge 6805 energy rating. That is massive. The forecast even flags it as too big for this break, so unless you’re a madman on a gun, that one’s for the big-wave specialists or maybe the kite crew, given the cross-onshore wind.
Overall, the first weekend of July is your best bet. Get in the water Friday and Saturday mornings while the glass is on.
Rusty.
