Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here, let's take a look at what North Beach is offering up over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it's a bit of a slow start. The first few days, Tuesday the 7th through to Thursday the 9th, are pretty flat and messy. You've got weak, short-period swell mixing with cross-onshore winds, so it's going to be choppy and unappealing. The combined energy is low, around 313 (moderate wave energy) at best, and it's just not worth paddling out for. A real gap in the action.
Things start to build on Friday the 10th, but it's still marginal. The swell jumps up to 7ft from the S, with a nice long period of 15 seconds (groundswell), but the wind is still cross-onshore. The energy is strong, hitting 1919 (strong wave energy), but the quality isn't there yet. Saturday the 11th of July is the first real standout. You've got a solid 5ft S swell with a 13-second period, and the wind goes glassy in the morning. That's the kind of clean, calm start you want. The water temp is about 72° (average for the time of year), so it's comfortable. This is the best on offer in the first week—get out there early.
Sunday the 12th gets a bit of a bump in size, but the wind shifts to a moderate cross-off, which will keep it clean for the morning. The swell is 6ft from the SSW, but the period drops to 7 seconds, so it'll be a bit weaker and less lined up. The energy is moderate (665). Not a standout, but a decent session.
The second week starts with a few more promising mornings. Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th both have clean, cross-off winds and surf around 5ft to 7ft from the SE. The period is a bit short (9 seconds), so it won't be a power swell, but it's rideable and clean. The energy is still strong (762 and 507). After a few days of nothing, these are a solid pick.
The real monster shows up on Sunday the 19th of July. The forecast shows a 10ft S swell with a cross-off wind, but get this: the combined energy is 2457 (very strong wave energy). The model is saying the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That's a code red for a beach break. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it's going to be a washing machine. Not a recommendation for the average surfer.
Then, the week after that, on Wednesday the 22nd, we get a massive 15ft SSW swell with a 12-second period. Energy is a staggering 8520 (very strong wave energy). Again, the model flags it as too big for this break. This is not a paddle session; it's a spectator sport or a kite session if you're crazy. The wind is light cross-shore, but the size is just overwhelming for North Beach. For a beach break, that much swell is more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
So, to wrap it up: the best bet is Saturday the 11th of July for the glassy conditions and clean shape. The following Monday and Tuesday mornings (13th and 14th) are also worth a look for a clean, manageable session. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big. Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
