The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Addington (South Beach). I’m not gonna lie, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of days where you’re better off leaving the board in the shed. The ocean’s feeling a bit confused, and the wind is often working against us.

The water temp is sitting at 70° right now, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing to write home about there.

We’re starting off with a bit of a flat spell, so the first real chance to get wet is looking like Thursday the 20th of August. That morning, we’ve got a lumpy 7ft swell from the south, but it’s short period at 8 seconds, and the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-off from the SSW. It’s not going to be pretty, and the combined energy is moderate (726). The afternoon cleans up a bit with a 5ft S swell, but it’s still a marginal call. Honestly, it’s not worth getting excited about.

The next potential highlight is Sunday the 23rd of August. This is the biggest pulse we see, with a strong 13ft SSW groundswell in the morning. The period is a solid 13 seconds, and the combined energy is a whopping 7327 – that’s strong wave energy. But here’s the catch: with size that big, over 8ft, this is strictly for experts. The wind is a cross-off 16 mph from the SSW, which is okay, but it’s going to be a raw, powerful day. The afternoon drops to 8ft with a 15-second period, still a heavy 2728 energy. If you’re not a seasoned pro, give this one a wide berth.

After that, it’s a bit of a dead zone again. The wind just won’t let up, mostly onshore from the NE, ripping the surface apart. The next real standout pops up way out there on Friday the 28th of August. The morning brings a 4ft south swell with a 13-second period and a light 6 mph cross-shore from the SE. The energy is moderate (577). But the real gem is the afternoon. This is the best window of the whole stretch. The swell is a clean 3ft from the south, 13-second period, and the wind goes glassy – 3 mph from the SE. That’s as good as it gets for clean conditions. The combined energy is 553, and the waves are expected to be good. This is the one to circle.

Then we roll into the weekend of the 30th of August. Sunday the 30th has some promise. A 6ft S swell in the morning, short period at 6 seconds, but the wind is a light 9 mph cross-off from the SSE. The energy is moderate (403). The afternoon bumps up to 7ft from the south with an 8-second period, and the wind drops to a light 6 mph cross-off. The combined energy is 656. It’s going to be a bit lumpy, but it’s surfable and clean.

For the rest of the first week of September, it’s back to onshore junk. Nothing to see there.

So, to sum it up: the standout is that Friday the 28th of August afternoon. That glassy window with the 3ft south groundswell is your best bet by a long shot. The Sunday the 23rd is a big, powerful day for experts only. Everything else is a grind for the dedicated.

Stay sharp, and don’t force it.

Rusty.
