The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you—this outlook for Addington is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got a decent run of surf coming, but it’s not all clean and you’ll have to pick your windows. The water’s sitting at 72°, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to get wet is Saturday morning, July 18th. It’s small, with waist-high 3 ft swell from the east, but the wind is absolutely glassy—dead calm, NE at 3 mph. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, sheltered, and the combined energy is moderate (335). It’s an easy, fun little session, but nothing to write home about. The afternoon is even smaller, 2 ft from the south, still glassy, but the energy is actually a bit better (382). Still, it’s just ordinary.
Sunday, July 19th is where things start to lift. The morning brings a clean 6 ft swell from the SSE, with a nice 12-second period—proper groundswell. Glassy conditions again with NE 3 mph. The combined energy jumps to 966, which is solid. This is a good, clean head-high option for the weekend. The afternoon holds the same size but the wind swings onshore, so get out early.
Monday, July 20th is the standout of the first week. Morning session: 7 ft from the SSE, 12-second period, and a cross-offshore wind from the south at 9 mph. The energy is strong at 1421, and the comment says “very good.” That’s a proper session—clean, powerful, overhead waves. The afternoon gets a bit cross-on, but the morning is the pick.
Now, here’s the frustrating bit. From Tuesday, July 21st through to the end of the month, it’s a long stretch of poor to ordinary conditions. The swell sticks around, but the wind is almost always onshore from the NE, gusting up to 15–19 mph. The surf gets messy, choppy, and uninviting. There’s a brief moment on Thursday, July 23rd with clean offshore winds from the SSW, but the swell is tiny at 2 ft–3 ft, so it’s not worth the drive.
Saturday, July 25th offers a glimmer—4 ft–5 ft from the south with a very long 17–19 second period, clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is strong (1270), but the tide or conditions are questionable. The long period might make it a bit too straight for the beach break, but for a point or reef, it could be magic. Worth a look if you’re keen.
The rest of the second week is a write-off until Thursday, July 30th afternoon, when a 7 ft south swell rolls in with a clean cross-offshore wind. The energy is moderate (767), but the period is short at 9 seconds, so it’s a bit lumpy. Still, it’s the best of a bad run.
Friday, July 31st sees a jump in size—8 ft from the south, 10-second period, but the wind is onshore at 9–12 mph. The energy is huge (1951), but it’s a messy, blown-out wall for experts only. Beginners stay away.
The real promise comes on Saturday, August 1st morning. Clean, 7 ft from the south, 10-second period, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE at 3 mph. The energy is moderate (876), and the comment says “good.” That’s a solid, clean, overhead session to wrap up the period. The afternoon gets windy again, so make it a morning mission.
Bottom line: The best windows are Monday morning July 20th for the best combo of size and clean conditions, and Saturday morning August 1st for a solid, clean swell. The rest of the time, you’re fighting the wind. Stay patient.
Rusty.
