Table - best surf conditions forecast for Addington (South Beach) over the next 16 days.

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up at Addington (South Beach). It’s a bit of a mixed bag, so we’ll need to be patient.

The overall pattern is hard work for the first week. The wind is stubbornly onshore from the northeast for days, which is going to mess up the shape. There’s a glimmer of hope late in the run, but you’ll have to wait for it.

The first real chance to get wet is on Sunday the 12th. The morning is looking glassy with a light SSE breeze, clean as a whistle. Swell is a modest 4ft from the south with a 12-second period, creating a decent long-period groundswell. The combined energy is moderate at 544. It’s a beginner-friendly wave height, and with glassy conditions, it’s as good as it gets for the sheltered setup here. The water temperature is about average for this time of year.

After that, the window slams shut. From Monday the 13th right through to the end of the week, it’s mostly onshore NE winds, with swell getting a bit lumpy and short period. The surf is poor for paddling. There’s a big, long-period south swell arriving on Saturday the 18th, with a very long 17-second period and combined energy of 3061, which is strong. But the wind is messy, cross-shore at best, and the wave comment says it’s marginal. The 8ft height is too big for beginners and the period makes it tricky for a beach break. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle day.

The situation improves a little on Thursday the 23rd. The morning brings a gentle offshore SSW wind, making for clean conditions. The swell is a modest 4ft from the south with a 10-second period, and combined energy of 531. It’s a good, clean option for the experienced surfer after a long drought. The afternoon is also clean with a cross-offshore breeze, but the swell drops to 2ft.

The real standout, if you can wait, is Sunday the 26th. The morning has a clean cross-offshore wind from the south, and a solid 5ft swell from the south with a very long 17-second period. Combined energy is 1315, which is solid. The wind is moderate, but it’s clean. This is a proper groundswell, and for a point or reef it would be magic, but at this beach break, the long period might make it a bit straight. Still, it’s the best wave height and cleanest conditions in the entire second week. The crowd factor is listed as "sometimes", so you might share it with a few others.

To sum it up: the first week is a write-off for good surf. The pick of the bunch is the glassy morning on Sunday the 12th for beginners, and the clean, punchy swell on Sunday the 26th for anyone who knows what they’re doing. Keep an eye on the wind for the 26th.

Rusty.
