The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Addington (South Beach) over the next couple of weeks.
First thing—this is a sheltered spot, and it’s a beginner-friendly wave. The water temp is sitting at 72°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The real action is all crammed into the first few days. We’ve got a nice little window starting Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell is a solid 6 ft from the SSE with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy out of the ESE at just 3 mph. That’s clean, lined-up, and friendly. The combined energy is moderate (950). This is the best on offer for the whole run—get on it while you can.
Sunday afternoon, the wind switches onshore from the ENE, and the quality drops right off.
Monday, July 20th, the swell picks up a hair to 6 ft from the SE, same 12-second period, but the wind is a cross-offshore from the S at 12 mph. The wave energy is solid (1253), but it’s a bit lumpy. Still surfable for the keen, but not as clean as Sunday morning.
From Tuesday, July 21st, through Thursday, July 23rd, it’s pretty grim. Onshore winds, dropping swell, and junk conditions. Thursday afternoon sees a 7 ft S swell with a short 8-second period and strong cross-off winds—that’s a messy, blown-out wall of water. Not recommended.
There’s a brief glimmer on Friday, July 24th, with a 4 ft S swell at 10 seconds and light offshore SW wind. The energy is low (366), and it’s only surfable, not great. Worth a paddle if you’re desperate.
Then we hit a big dry spell. From Saturday, July 25th, all the way through to Thursday, July 31st, it’s mostly onshore winds, dropping swell, and poor conditions. A few days there with longer-period groundswell (14-15 seconds) but the wind is all wrong, and the waves are too small and sloppy.
Now, here’s the long-range stand-out. On Saturday, August 1st, the morning looks magic. Glassy conditions with a 8 ft SSE groundswell, 11-second period, and no wind. The energy is strong (1991). This is a solid, punchy wave, but at 8 ft, it’s getting into “too big for beginners” territory. For the experienced crew, it’s a session to circle on the calendar. The afternoon blows out hard.
Sunday, August 2nd, is a write-off with strong onshore winds. Then Monday, August 3rd, morning brings another glassy moment: 7 ft from the NE with a short 7-second period, and zero wind. The energy is moderate (1118). The waves will be a bit fat and disorganized because of the short period, but dead calm conditions make it a fun, user-friendly wave for the more adventurous.
So, the only true standouts are: Sunday morning, July 19th, for clean, cruisy fun, and Saturday morning, August 1st, for the bigger, more powerful stuff. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
