The Lowdown

Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and we’re looking at the next 16 days for Addington (South Beach). The long-range is pretty messy, and we’ve got to wade through a lot of poor conditions to find the few windows that are actually worth paddling out.

We kick off with nothing really on the cards for the first few days. There’s energy in the water from Tuesday, 14 July, but the wind is onshore and the conditions are just poor. That 7ft swell combined with that onshore wind? Forget about it. We have a bit of a gap until things shift.

On Wednesday, 15 July, we get a little hope. The morning is glassy with an easterly swell around 6ft at 10 seconds, and with the water temp sitting at 71°, which is about average for this time of year, it’s pleasant enough. The wind is a glassy offshore breeze, and the waves should be clean. It’s not huge, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The swell direction from the ESE matches up with what this spot wants.

Thursday, 16 July, starts okay again with glassy conditions in the morning, swell dropping to 5ft, but the afternoon turns to junk with cross-onshore wind. The rest of the week is a mixed bag of ordinary and poor conditions, with a couple of moments where the wind is offshore or glassy but the swell's not doing much. Saturday, 18 July, and Sunday, 19 July, have some long-period groundswell hitting (14 and 12 seconds), but the wind keeps ruining it.

Now, the standout window. On Monday, 20 July, we see a solid pulse. The morning has an 8ft south swell with a 10-second period and cross-offshore winds creating clean conditions. That combined swell energy hits 1575, which is strong. The wave size is getting into the expert-only territory, so if you’re not solid, give it a miss. The swell is a bit big, and it may close out a bit on this beach, but it’s the best power we’ll see. The wind stays offshore for the morning—grab it. Just be aware that the break is sheltered from the ESE optimum, and with this south swell, it might not be absolutely perfect.

After Monday, it drops right off. We get some clean surf again on the morning of Tuesday, 21 July, but the swell is down to 4ft, and by Wednesday afternoon, the wind has turned onshore again. The following weekend, July 25 and 26, brings some more sizey groundswell up to 6ft, but the wind is onshore, making it a messy affair. Even though we have a 15-second period on Sunday, the cross-onshore breeze will chop it up. The last few days into the end of the month are mostly rubbish, with onshore winds and poor surf, so it’s looking like a dry spell after that Monday pulse.

Overall, the best bet is Monday, 20 July morning, for the biggest clean surf of the period, but it’s for the experienced crew. If that’s too heavy, the glassy windows on Wednesday and Thursday mornings earlier in the week are your best for a more manageable, clean session.

Stay safe out there.
