The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down for the Bay of Plenty over the next couple weeks.
The water’s sittin’ about 71°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The session to beat is Thursday morning, July 16. The Bay of Plenty is a beach/jetty spot, fairly consistent, and it’s beginner-friendly. You’ve got a 5ft east swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is glassy – dead flat, no chop. The combined energy is moderate (552), so it’s gonna be clean, fun, and easy. Crowds are possible, so get in early.
Friday afternoon, July 17 is another quiet winner. Swell drops to 4ft from the east, but again the wind goes glassy, so the surface is perfect. The energy is lighter (263), but it’s a great session for a mellow paddle.
Saturday July 18 and Sunday July 19 get messy, especially Sunday afternoon with a fresh 19 mph cross-shore wind that’ll chop things up.
The big stuff hits on Thursday morning, July 23. A massive 13ft south swell, 11-second period, and the combined energy is huge (3543). The wind is light and cross-shore, but the size is way too big for beginners and even for most – it’s for experts only. The forecast says the swell is too big for this break, so be careful. Long-range, so keep an eye on it.
After July 23, the surf drops off and the wind stays mostly cross or onshore, killin’ the quality. There’s a bit of a 4ft south swell on Saturday July 25 morning, but the wind is fresh and messy, so not worth it.
Bottom line: Thursday July 16 morning is your best bet, with Friday July 17 afternoon as a solid backup. The big stuff on July 23 is for the brave.
Rusty.
