Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s start with what’s happening now. Friday morning, July 3rd, we’ve got a solid 8ft south swell rolling in with a long 13 second period and combined energy at 2340—that’s strong stuff. The wind is dead calm, glassy, and the water’s about 71°, which is normal for this time of year. That’s prime surf for experienced guys.
Bay of Plenty beach/jetty is the spot that morning. That 8ft south swell isn’t exactly the optimum SE direction, but at this size and with that clean glass, it’s going to deliver. It’s usually a beginner-friendly spot, but not today—this is expert territory.
Friday afternoon the wind turns light cross-onshore from the SSE at 3 mph, and the quality drops. Saturday morning, July 4th, still has 8ft swell, but the wind is cross from the SSW at 6 mph, bringing some cross-chop. Still surfable, but not the same perfection. Saturday afternoon and Sunday see the swell easing and the wind worsening.
Then we hit a dry spell from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday July 8th. Waves drop to 4ft and below, often choppy, with combined energy barely hitting 400. Those are small, weak, unattractive conditions.
Thursday July 9th brings a new pulse of south swell, 8ft to 8ft, but the wind is cross to onshore—big but not clean. Friday July 10th morning has 6ft south swell, 12 second period, 834 energy, but the wind is cross from the NNE at 9 mph—again, messy.
The next real standout is Tuesday July 14th morning. Only 4ft of south swell, but that 12 second period and a light cross-offshore wind from the north will give you clean, fun waves for intermediate surfers. Not huge, but glassy.
One more long-range one: Saturday July 18th early morning, glassy again, with 5ft east swell and a 9 second period. That could be a gem, but it’s far out, so keep an eye on it.
Bottom line: Friday morning July 3rd is your best bet. Tuesday July 14th morning is the next clean session. The rest is mostly average.
