Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bay of Plenty over the next 16 days.
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the Bay of Plenty region over the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, to be honest. We’re looking at a solid 7ft S swell coming in on Friday the 10th, but it’s arriving with a cross-onshore wind that’s just going to mess it up. The south swell direction is a poor match for the optimum SE, and the combined energy is strong (2055), but the surface is choppy and the tide’s no help. Friday afternoon is even worse. Saturday’s not much better – the swell drops to 5ft but the wind stays cross or cross-on, and the energy is only moderate (857). The whole weekend and Monday are looking pretty average.
The first real standout comes on Wednesday the 15th in the morning. That’s the one to circle. The swell is a clean 7ft from the ESE, with a solid 10-second period, and the wind is glassy. Absolutely glassy. That’s a major positive. The energy is moderate-strong (811), and the direction is a better match for the Bay of Plenty’s optimum. This is the best session on offer. It’s not huge, but it will be clean and well-shaped. Thursday morning the 16th also has glassy conditions, with a smaller 5ft E swell, but it’s a notch down on quality.
After that, things drop off. The swell fades through the end of the week, and by the weekend of the 18th and 19th, we’re into poor surf with strong winds. The following week looks inconsistent, with small, wind-affected waves. The 22nd has a 7ft ENE swell, but the wind is a moderate cross-shore, making it messy. The 25th shows a bigger 5ft S swell again, but with a cross-onshore wind and a very long period of 16 seconds, which is a groundswell. That long period means it’ll be better at a reef or point break, not so much at a beach break like the Bay of Plenty. The energy is strong (1423), but the wind ruins it.
So, in short: Wednesday the 15th is your best bet. Get out there early for the glassy conditions. The rest of the window is a lot of waiting. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
