Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s talk Bay of Plenty in feet and miles per hour, just how we feel it.
Right now, it’s a bit flat and messy. The first few days are a wait-and-see. The first real pulse of energy is building toward the end of the week, but we gotta be patient.
Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th are a no-go. Wind is out of the NE at 9 mph, creating a cross-chop, and the swell is tiny, around 4 ft dropping to 1 ft. The energy is weak – barely registering. Water temp is 72°, normal for the season.
Things get interesting on Thursday 9th. That south swell starts to show in the afternoon with a pulse of 4 ft at 14 seconds. The energy picks up nicely. Wind is a light S at 6 mph, but it’s cross-onshore, so not perfect.
Now, the standout window is Friday 10th through Saturday 11th. Friday morning jumps to 6 ft from the south with a very long 15-second period. That’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is pumping. The wind is light and offshore from the ESE at 3 mph. That’s clean, solid surf. It’s a bit on the bigger side, so not for beginners.
Saturday 11th morning is the best of the lot. Swell drops slightly to 5 ft, still from the south, 13-second period, but the wind is glassy – a S wind at 3 mph. Flat-calm ocean. This is the session to circle. The Bay is an exposed beach/jetty setup, so with that long-period south swell and glassy conditions, it’ll be firing. Crowds are possible.
The rest of the period gets messy. Sunday 12th brings strong SSW winds at 16 mph, cross-shore. Monday 15th has another clean window: Wednesday morning with glassy wind and a 5 ft south swell. But the real hidden gem is Wednesday 15th afternoon: 6 ft from the SSW, 9-second period, but winds go dead calm – 0 mph, glassy. That’s excellent, clean surf, but short period makes it punchy. Best for experienced surfers.
After that, it’s mostly cross-onshore winds and middling energy through to the end of the run. There’s a small, clean window on Saturday 18th afternoon with 3 ft and glassy conditions, but it’s not a standout.
So, bottom line: Saturday 11th morning is the pick – clean, glassy, solid south swell. Friday 10th is a close second for a punchy, offshore day.
Stay stoked, keep an eye on that wind.
Rusty.
