Table - best surf conditions forecast for Bay of Plenty over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's on the table for the Bay of Plenty.
Honestly, this stretch is a bit of a mixed bag. We've got some decent pulses of swell coming through, but the wind is going to be the main character for a lot of it, and it's not always a friendly one. The water temp is sitting right where you'd expect it for this time of year, nothing weird there.
The first real chance to get wet is Thursday morning, the 9th. Bay of Plenty (beach/jetty) is seeing a 5ft SSW swell, but it's a bit short period at 8 seconds, and that cross-shore wind is going to put a little chop on the face. The energy is moderate (509), but it's nothing to write home about. It'll be a bit of a grind.
Friday the 10th has a bigger push of swell, 7ft from the S on the morning, with a much better 15-second period bringing some real energy (2027). That's a proper groundswell, but it's coming in with a cross-onshore wind. The size is getting up there, so it's not for the beginners, but the power is there. The wind is a bit of a letdown, though.
The standout, and I mean the real standout, is Sunday afternoon the 12th. It's not the biggest swell at 4ft from the S, but the wind goes glassy. Dead flat. That's when this place will clean up and show its best side. The energy is low (401), but on a glassy day, any wave is a good wave. That's the one you want to be out for.
Then Monday morning the 13th, we get another glassy window with a 5ft ENE swell, but it's a short 6-second period, so it's going to be a bit soft and fat. Still, glassy is glassy, and you'll get a few.
The second week gets a bit messy with strong winds. The 20th and 21st of July see some serious swell, 10ft, but that's way too big for this beach/jetty setup. The model is even saying it's too big. The morning of the 21st is dead calm with 10ft NE swell and a massive 2390 energy, but it's just too much juice for this spot. That's a pass.
The best of the second week, if you're an experienced surfer, is the afternoon of the 23rd of July. The swell drops to 8ft from the ENE, still hefty, but the wind is glassy. The energy is strong (1345) and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. That's a heavy, clean, powerful wave. If you've got the chops and a big board, that's your window.
For most of us, Sunday afternoon the 12th is the day. Glassy, clean, and just enough swell to have fun.
Rusty.
