Right, let’s have a look at what’s happening with the Bay of Plenty. It’s a bit of a mixed bag coming up, but there are definitely some windows to get a couple of decent sessions in.
Alright, starting off the weekend of the 12th, we’ve got some real promise. Sunday morning at the Bay of Plenty is looking like a standout. The water’s sitting at about 72°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Swell’s coming in from the south at 4ft, with a solid 12-second period from a groundswell. The combined energy is moderate at 515, and with the wind glassy out of the south at just 3 mph, you’re looking at clean, fun waves. That’s a great session for a beginner, but it’ll be a fun one for anyone. Keep in mind the crowds can be around sometimes, but with conditions like that, it’ll be worth it.
Sunday afternoon drops off a bit with onshore wind, so that’s the end of that window.
The next real blip is the following week. Thursday the 16th morning has a glassy morning again with 5ft easterly swell at 10 seconds. It’s smaller, but clean. The next proper standout is Saturday the 18th afternoon. The wind goes glassy again, with a 5ft southerly swell, 11-second period, and moderate energy. That’s another clean, fun one.
Now, there’s a promising but less certain run coming in the second week. On the 24th of July, Friday morning, it’s looking like a highlight. The wind is light cross-offshore from the southwest at 6 mph, and we’ve got a 6ft swell from the east-northeast. The energy is moderate at 750, and the conditions are described as clean. That’s a good swell, but it’s a short period of 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit choppier in the lineup. The following Saturday morning, the 25th, has a similar 7ft east-northeast swell, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not as clean.
Overall, the best of the lot is that Sunday morning, the 12th. That glassy south swell with the 12-second period is the one to aim for. For the second week, the Friday the 24th morning is the best bet, but it’s a bit further out, so keep an eye on it.
