G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk Bay of Plenty over the next 16 days—honestly, it’s not firing. The first few days are pretty average, with a lot of marginal conditions and messy wind. Water’s sitting at 22°, right around the norm for July.
We’ve got a solid S/SE groundswell rolling in on July 4th, about 7ft with a 12-second period, but the wind is cross-on from the ENE at 6 mph, so it’s choppy. The combined energy is at 1369 (moderate to strong), but the call is marginal. Weekend is a bit of a write-off.
Then Monday, July 6th morning, the wind goes glassy—ENE at 3 mph—and the swell drops to 3ft from the SE, 10-second period. Combined energy is low at 250 (weak), but it’s clean and tiny. This is the best early window for beginners at Bay of Plenty (beach/jetty). The break is fairly consistent, but expect some company.
After that, it’s a lull until July 10th Friday morning, when a longer-period S groundswell arrives—5ft, 15-second period, with S wind at 9 mph crossing offshore. Combined energy hits 1174 (moderate/strong). That’s proper groundswell, but on a beach/jetty break it might be a bit straight. Still, it’s our best size of the run. The following days get blown out—July 12th Sunday has NE wind at 28 mph, so that’s a wash.
Second week is lean. July 17th Friday morning has another glassy moment: 3ft from the east, 9-second period, NE at 3 mph. Combined energy is weak (226), but it’s clean. Then a new S swell pops up late July 18th and 19th—around 3 to 4ft, 12-second period—but cross-on wind spoils it.
Best bet? Monday July 6th morning for a clean, small session. For size, Friday July 10th morning is the one, but wind’s iffy. The rest is a bit of a slog. Forecasts can change, but for now, take the clean windows and don’t expect much else.
Rusty.
