Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey mates, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid stretch of surf ahead for the Bay of Plenty, but it’s not all primo. The real standout is gonna be Friday the 3rd of July, with clean, punchy waves. Here’s the rundown.
Friday morning kicks off with a good southern swell at 8ft, coming from the S with a long period of 14 seconds. The wave energy’s pumping (2865), and with glassy conditions from a light easterly, it’s gonna be a beauty – but only for experienced surfers, as it’s pretty solid. Friday afternoon eases to 6ft from the SSE, period still strong at 12 seconds (1506 energy), and winds stay glassy from the SSE. This is the pick, no question.
Saturday the 4th of July holds up at 8ft in the morning from the SSE, period 13 seconds (2361 energy), but cross-shore winds from the SSW and S will ruffle it up a touch. Still surfable, but not as clean. Drops to 7ft in the afternoon with similar conditions. Sunday the 5th slides to 6ft in the morning, then 5ft in the afternoon, with cross-shore northeasterlies freshening up and making it choppy. Marginal.
We hit a lull from Monday the 6th through Wednesday the 8th of July, with swell under 5ft and weak energy (around 150-400). Poor conditions and messy wind. Thursday the 9th livens up with a 6ft S swell in the morning, but it’s messy; the afternoon brings a 8ft S swell at 13 seconds (2713 energy) but with onshore wind. Marginal. Friday the 10th is smaller, around 5ft, with cross-onshore breezes.
Second week’s a bit of a gamble. Saturday the 11th has a tiny 3ft S swell in the morning, glassy but weak (319 energy). The rest of the week into mid-July stays marginal or poor, with the swell bouncing between 3ft and 8ft, mostly from the S or ENE, but winds are often cross or cross-onshore and sometimes stiff. The one spike is Sunday the 12th afternoon – a 8ft S swell with a very long 17-second period (3674 energy), but it’s onshore and there’s moderate rain. Not ideal. By Thursday the 16th, there’s a 10ft S swell on the horizon (2500 energy), but it’s too big for this break and winds are moderate cross-shore – only for the hardcore.
Bottom line: lock in Friday the 3rd of July for the best conditions. The Bay of Plenty is a beach/jetty spot, fairly consistent, and it can get crowded sometimes, but with that quality, it’ll be well worth it. Water temp’s about average for this time of year. The long-period swell (14 seconds) will line up nice – just watch for the bigger sets.
