Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down the Bay of Plenty.
Overall, it’s a slow start, but things build up later in the run. Water temp is about 71°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no worries there.
The first real opportunity to paddle out hits on Saturday, July 4th. Saturday morning is the clear winner of the entire forecast. We’re looking at a solid 8ft swell from the SSE with a 12-second period, and the wind is glassy. That’s the kind of morning that gets the heart pumping. Bay of Plenty will be serving up clean, powerful waves. The swell energy is strong at 2199, so you'll definitely feel that push. Just a heads up – this size is too big for beginners; it’s for the experienced crew.
Saturday afternoon drops slightly to 7ft, and a light cross-on breeze comes in, but it’ll still be a solid session.
Sunday the 5th sees the swell drop to 5ft, but the wind turns cross-shore and picks up to about 6 mph, making things a bit choppy. It’s still surfable, but not prime.
We hit a flat spell from Monday the 6th through Thursday the 9th. There’s some glassy mornings, but the waves are tiny (3ft to 5ft). Not much to write home about.
Looking forward, Friday the 10th of July shows the swell building in the afternoon. A 6ft swell from the south with a very long 17-second period, and energy back up to 1905. The wind is cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit lumpy, but that long period means proper groundswell.
The next big one is Saturday, July 11th. The morning brings a pumping 8ft swell from the south with a long 16-second period. Energy is very strong at 3480. The wind is a light cross-on, so not perfect, but workable. This is strictly for experts – that’s a lot of power. Light crowds are possible.
After that, the surf drops off again for the rest of the second week. There are some pulses of longer period swell, but the winds turn messy or onshore. Nothing that really stands out.
So, here’s the call: if you want clean, glassy perfection, be on it Saturday morning, July 4th. If you want the biggest, most powerful waves and you’ve got the skills, Saturday, July 11th is your day.
Rusty.
