The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the Bay of Plenty.
Right off the bat, for the next week and a half, this isn’t looking like a classic run. The first solid chance of a wave doesn't show up until Saturday the 22nd. Before that, it’s a messy mix of strong cross-shore winds and junky conditions, with that easterly wind really killing what little swell there is. There's a real gap in the action here, so if you're keen, you'll be waiting.
The standout of the entire 16-day window is actually pretty promising, but you have to be patient. The best bet is on Sunday, August 23rd. The Bay of Plenty picks up a solid, long-period groundswell from the south. We're talking 8ft to 8ft, which is expert territory, so leave the foam boards at home. The period is a very long 13 to 15 seconds, so look for it to wrap into the points and reefs rather than the beach. There's a ton of energy in the water – 2062 to 3016 on the energy scale – so expect powerful sets. The wind on Sunday afternoon turns light and cross-onshore, which will keep it from being perfect, but it’s the best size and power on the chart.
Following that, the following Sunday, August 30th, is worth a mention. The swell drops right back to around 4ft from the south, but it gets glassy. Absolutely flat calm wind in the morning and afternoon. That’s a rare treat. With 224 to 261 energy, it'll be small but clean. That’s a morning session for the logs or a mid-length if you’re happy to work for a few fun ones.
Between those two dates, the middle of the week from the 24th to the 29th is just a mess of onshore and cross-shore winds, or huge windswell that’s blown out. Not worth the drive unless you enjoy frustration.
So, to sum it up: the big, expert-level south groundswell on Sunday the 23rd is the real standout, but go in knowing it’s powerful and requires your A-game. The tiny, glassy day on August 30th is a sleeper pick for those who appreciate quality over quantity.
Rusty.
