The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s brewing. We’ve got one spot lighting up the charts for a solid run, so let’s get straight into it.

We’re looking at Outside Corner – a reef and point setup that’s going to be pumping. It’s an exposed spot, handling a solid SW groundswell, and the water’s sitting at 78°F – that’s pretty much average for the time of year, nothing to write home about, but comfortable.

Right from Wednesday morning, August 19th, it kicks off. We’ve got a 8ft SSW swell rolling in with an 18-second period – that’s some serious long-period groundswell. Combined wave energy is up at (3575), so there’s plenty of grunt. The wind is offshore from the SE at 12 mph, which is going to keep things clean. This is excellent, powerful surf, but make no mistake, at this size and with that period, this is for experienced surfers only. The 8ft sets on Wednesday afternoon (4121 energy) are even meatier. That long period will make for some proper, lined-up walls on the point, but it can be a handful if you’re not used to the power.

Thursday August 20th is more of the same goodness. Morning sees 8ft from the SW, 16-second period, and still a clean offshore breeze. The energy is dropping slightly, but (3737) is still a lot of ocean moving. Thursday afternoon eases a touch to 8ft, but still solid.

Friday August 21st starts a bit smaller in the morning at 5ft, but that’s a deceptive one – the period is back up to 18 seconds, so the sets will have plenty of push. The afternoon jumps back up to 8ft with 17-second period and energy at (3301). This is another standout window for the crew who can handle it.

The weekend – Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd – the swell drops just a little, but we’re still looking at 7ft to 6ft SSW swell, with 16-second periods. Clean offshore winds hold through Saturday and into Sunday morning. The energy is still in the (2000s), so it’s not backing off completely. A very solid weekend for the more confident surfer.

Early next week, Monday 24th and Tuesday 25th, the swell holds around 6ft to 6ft, still clean. The energy is starting to fade a bit, but there are still plenty of fun, punchy waves. A cross-off wind creeps in on Tuesday afternoon, taking the edge off the perfection.

Wednesday 26th the swell drops to 5ft, and the period shortens. Still some surf, but the magic is fading. By Thursday 27th, it gets small, with 3ft and long period, but the energy is low.

Now, here’s the big stand-out in the long-range. Mark your calendars for Friday August 28th. We get a 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and glassy conditions. A light SW breeze at 3 mph – that’s flat calm. This is going to be stunningly clean. Energy at (2821) is still plenty. This is the pick of the entire run for a perfect, uncrowded-feeling session.

The run continues into Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th with cleaner, smaller waves, but still good fun. Then, another exciting pulse arrives at the end of the month. Monday August 31st sees a 6ft SW groundswell with a 21-second period – that is very long period. Energy jumps right back up to (3981). That’s a proper, long-range groundswell event. That kind of period really needs a point break like Outside Corner to shine. The wind stays offshore. This one’s promising but it’s over a week out, so keep an eye on it.

Straight into Tuesday September 1st, we’ve got another strong push: 8ft SW, 18-second period, energy at (3839). Offshore wind again. This is an incredible run of surf. The first week of September looks to continue with good, solid 6ft swells and clean conditions through Wednesday 2nd and Thursday 3rd.

Crowds are listed as *sometimes* here, and on days like these, with this quality, expect some company. But for a heavy reef and point, the quality will push out the groms. This is a stretch of advanced-level surfing that doesn’t come around too often. If I had to name the true standout, it’s that glassy Friday August 28th session.

Rusty.
