The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

We’ve got a solid stretch of clean, offshore conditions setting up for Outside Corner over the next two weeks. The water’s sitting at about 80°, right on average for this time of year, so no surprises there. The overall pattern is persistent ESE wind, staying offshore and keeping the lineup clean, with the swell direction coming from the SW to SSW sweet spot. The wave energy is moderate to start, building later.

The action kicks off Thursday, July 16th. Morning sees waves around 5 feet of SSW swell, with a 15-second period, under a fresh offshore ESE breeze. It’s a proper groundswell, and the reef-and-point setup at Outside Corner is built for this kind of long-period energy. The afternoon cleans up even more with a moderate breeze and 5 feet of SW swell. The energy ticks up – it’s solid, but not huge. This is expert territory, but it’s clean and consistent.

Friday, July 17th, stays similar: 5 feet in the morning, 4 feet in the afternoon, both with a 15 to 16-second pulse. The energy climbs. Still offshore all day, but the morning is a touch fresher. Not a standout, but a very good, reliable window.

The weekend of July 18th and 19th drops off a notch. Swell dips to 4 to 4 feet, period drops to 13 seconds, and the energy falls back. Showers and a risk of thunderstorms on Sunday, but the wind stays offshore. It’s still surfable, but the quality is marginal.

Now, here’s the real standout. Monday, July 20th, delivers a punch of 7 feet of SSW swell with a 17-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong level. This is serious groundswell, and at that size, it’s only for the experienced crew. The heavier conditions will keep the crowds down, but it’s going to be a beast. The afternoon holds at 7 feet with a 16-second period. This is the best wave of the first week, no question.

Tuesday, July 21st, backs off to 6 feet, and the energy drops. Still very good, but the showers return. The rest of the week from July 22nd to 24th fades: 5 feet down to 3 feet, energy in a lower range, and though the wind stays offshore, it’s more of a fun, small wave window for the skilled.

Looking into the second week, the outlook is promising but less certain. July 25th shows a pulse of 4 feet of SSW swell with a 15-second period, and a moderate energy uptick. Then July 28th brings back 5 to 5 feet of SSW swell with a 15-second period, under a moderate offshore breeze. The afternoon picks up a cross-off wind, but it’s still clean. July 29th is similar: 5 feet, 14-second period, with a gentle offshore in the morning. Then July 30th drops to 3 feet but with a very long 18-second period. Finally, July 31st closes out the period with 3 to 4 feet of SSW swell, and a massive 21 to 22-second period. The energy jumps to a very strong level for the size. That long-period groundswell will wrap beautifully around the point, but keep in mind, at Outside Corner it’s a reef-and-point break, so it’ll handle that long period just fine.

The absolute best on offer is Monday, July 20th, and then the last few days of July, especially the 31st, for that incredible long-period groundswell. If you’re an expert, mark your calendar.

Rusty out.
