The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the next couple of weeks at Outside Corner.

We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, starting this Thursday the 20th of August and rolling right through with barely a breather. This is a reef and point setup that’s exposed to the SW, and it’s going to be a playground for the advanced crew. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is just a fraction under the long-term average for the time of year – nothing out of the ordinary, no thermal surprises to worry about.

Kicking off Thursday morning, we’ve got clean 8 ft SW swell with a 16-second period – that’s proper groundswell with plenty of grunt. The combined wave energy is strong at 3737. The wind is a steady offshore ESE breeze, keeping things clean. This is a big swell though – over 8 ft – so this is strictly for the experienced. The afternoon holds similar size at 8 ft, still offshore, still clean.

Friday the 21st morning drops a touch to 5 ft but the period stretches to 18 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. At a point break like Outside Corner, that will draw in nicely with plenty of shape and long lulls between sets. Wind stays offshore. Friday afternoon bumps back up to 8 ft with 17 seconds – excellent.

Saturday the 22nd stays in the 7–7 ft range, 16 seconds, offshore winds all day. Sunday the 23rd has slightly smaller 6 ft swell with 15 seconds, and the wind is offshore in the morning – gentle breeze, glassy edges. The afternoon goes cross-off, still clean but losing a bit of that perfect silky finish.

Monday the 24th through Tuesday the 25th holds steady – 6 ft to 6 ft, 16 seconds, offshore winds, moderate energy in the 1700–1500 range. Great conditions for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 26th drops to 5 ft with a shorter 14-second period – still decent but the energy is dropping into the moderate-low range (943). Afternoon gets a bit cross-off and the quality dips.

Then we hit a bit of a lull. Thursday the 27th is only 4 ft in the morning with cross-off wind – not recommended. But hold on – Thursday afternoon sees a spike in period to 19 seconds on a 3 ft swell, energy 1563. That’s a very long period groundswell, and at a point it could still offer some sneaky clean waves for the patient surfer. But the real standout is coming.

Friday the 28th morning brings back a solid 8 ft SW swell, 16 seconds, with light SSE winds and clean conditions – energy at 3313. That’s a big day for the experts, and it’s got my attention. The afternoon drops a little and gets cross-off, but the morning session looks choice.

Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th offer 5–6 ft with cross-off or offshore winds – decent but not the standout. Then Monday the 31st morning has a clean 5 ft SW swell with a monster 20-second period, energy 2301. That’s a very long period groundswell that will wrap beautifully into the point. The afternoon jumps to 7 ft with 20 seconds and energy 4528 – that’s very strong wave energy, but it’s cross-off so the texture isn’t perfect.

Now, if you’re planning ahead, the real highlight of the whole window is the 1st of September. Tuesday morning delivers 8 ft SW swell with 18 seconds, light offshore wind, and combined energy at 4546 – that’s strong to very strong energy, clean, and consistent. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook. It’s a big one though – experts only. Tuesday afternoon holds similar size at 8 ft, 17 seconds, still offshore.

Wednesday the 2nd stays solid at 7 ft with 16 seconds, offshore, energy 2308. After that, from Thursday the 3rd through Friday the 4th, the swell drops to 5–5 ft, periods around 14–15 seconds – still rideable, still clean at times, but nothing to write home about. The last session on Friday the 4th afternoon has a 3 ft SSW swell with 18 seconds, cross-off – a bit marginal.

Overall, this is a strong and extended run of surf at Outside Corner. The absolute standout is the 1st of September – big, clean, and powerful. Earlier in the window, Thursday the 20th and Friday the 28th are also top picks. Crowds are possible here, so bring your A-game and your patience.

Stay safe out there.
Rusty
