The Lowdown

Alright, I’m lookin’ across the 16-day window here, and lemme tell ya, for Outside Corner, there’s a whole lot of “almost” in the first week, but the second week really starts to cook. Let’s get into it.

We kick off Thursday the 16th with a solid start. Offshore wind from the SE, 16 mph, and a clean 5 ft SW groundswell (15-second period). The water’s sittin’ around 80°, pretty much normal for this time of year. The combined energy’s got some grunt (1042). It’s gonna be clean, powerful, and lined up. This is your best early window – real good stuff for experienced surfers.

Friday the 17th holds similar size and direction, 5 ft SW, but that wind picks up to 19 mph in the morning, and with rain showers, it’s a bit messier. Afternoon cleans up a little, but the tide or something’s just off. It’s surfable, but not the standout.

Now, Saturday the 18th through Thursday the 24th... it’s a long, drawn-out stretch of marginal conditions. The swell hangs around 4 ft to 5 ft, and even though the wind stays offshore, it’s often fresh at 16-19 mph. The energy drops a bit too, sitting in the 600-900 range. The quality’s just not there for a top recommendation. You’ll get waves, but they’ll be workin’ against the wind and tide.

Alright, here’s where it gets interesting. Monday the 20th kicks off a pulse of bigger SSW swell – 7 ft to 7 ft, with a very long 17-second period from the SSW. That’s some serious energy (2525) movin’ through. But here’s the catch: it’s accompanied by rain and 16 mph SE wind. Still, that’s a powerful groundswell that’ll wrap in nicely. This is more for the advanced crew.

Then, clear your calendar for Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th. This is the true standout. On Friday afternoon, we’ve got a clean 4 ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, with a moderate 12 mph offshore breeze. Saturday morning and afternoon both deliver 5 ft SSW swell, 14 seconds, same clean offshore wind. The energy is strong (over 1000) and the conditions are described as excellent. Wind is light, clean, and offshore. This is the best you’ll get – a proper, fun-size groundswell with perfect wind. The break is a reef and point, so that long-period energy will really line up. Crowds are only “sometimes” a problem, but on a Saturday like this, expect company.

Sunday the 26th starts to fade, and from Monday the 27th onward, we’re into a drop-off with shorter period SE windswell mixing in, and the wind cranking up to 22 mph. The energy’s there but it’s messy and short-period. The very end of the window, July 31st, shows another big pulse of 7 ft SW swell (19 seconds) with massive energy (3259), but the wind is howling at 19-22 mph. That’s a serious, powerful swell, but it’s gonna be a battle. For the brave and experienced only.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is a grind with a few good moments. The true standout is Friday the 24th through Saturday the 25th. That’s your window. Get out there for the clean, offshore, lined-up SSW groundswell. The bigger stuff on the 20th and 31st is for the experts only.

Rusty.
