The Lowdown
Alright, folks, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’ve got a proper look at what’s coming down the pipe for Outside Corner. We’re in for a solid run, so let’s not waste time.
Outside Corner is a reef and point break that handles a SW swell best, and it’s looking like the main event for the next couple of weeks. This spot is exposed and fairly consistent, so it’s going to pick up the energy. The optimum swell is from the SW, and we’re seeing a lot of that. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild there.
We kick off Monday the 24th of August with a solid pulse. The morning session is where it’s at – a 6ft SSW swell with a 16-second period. That’s proper groundswell, long and powerful. The combined energy is 1766 (moderate to strong), and we’ve got a clean ESE breeze blowing offshore at 12 mph. This is excellent, but it’s an advanced wave at that size and period, so only the crew with experience should be paddling out. The afternoon holds up but the score drops a little. Tuesday keeps the same theme, with 6ft SSW swell and offshore winds – the afternoon on Tuesday is the pick of that day.
Wednesday the 26th drops a little to 5ft, still clean and offshore, but the period backs off to 14 seconds. Still good waves, just not as much punch. Thursday the 27th is a standout. The morning is clean with a cross-off breeze, but the afternoon is the real deal. We get a 6ft SSW swell with a 15-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 3003 (strong). The wind is offshore at 12 mph. That’s going to be a magic session.
Now, Friday the 28th of August. This is the big one. The morning sees an 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and the energy is 3887 (strong, pushing into very strong). The wind is offshore at 12 mph. This is expert territory. If you’re not dialed in, give it a miss. The afternoon is still solid but the wind goes cross-off, making it a bit more manageable but still a heavy wave.
The weekend rolls in with good surf. Saturday the 29th has a 6ft SW swell and offshore winds in the morning. Sunday the 30th is a bit smaller at 4ft, but still clean. The following week keeps the swell alive. Monday the 31st has a 5ft SSW swell with an 18-second period in the afternoon and offshore wind. That’s another long-period groundswell. Tuesday the 1st of September and Wednesday the 2nd are both solid, with 7ft to 7ft SW swell, 16-17 second periods, and consistent offshore winds. The energy is in the 2000s (strong). This is a sustained run of quality.
The first week of September looks good. Thursday the 3rd has 5ft SW swell and offshore winds in the morning. Friday the 4th is smaller, but clean. Saturday the 5th the wind shifts, with a light cross breeze, but the swell is still 6ft. Sunday the 6th is the standout for the second week. The afternoon brings a 6ft SSW swell with an 18-second period, light cross-off wind, and energy of 2940 (strong). That’s a beautiful, clean, long-period groundswell. Then Monday the 7th of September has a 8ft SSW swell in the morning, with clean conditions.
The best on offer is the morning of Friday the 28th of August. That 8ft, 16-second groundswell with offshore wind is the peak of the whole run. The second standout is the afternoon of Thursday the 27th of August, for the same reason – big, clean, and powerful. If you’re an expert, those are your sessions. The crowds are listed as “sometimes”, so you might have company, but nothing you can’t handle.
There’s no gap at the start, we’re straight into it. The only thing to watch is that long-period swell (over 15 seconds) can make a beach break close out, but at a reef and point like Outside Corner, it’s going to set up beautifully. This is a solid 16-day window with very few, if any, flat days.
Rusty.
