The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid stretch of surf ahead, so let’s just get straight into it. The opening act is a beauty, but it’s for the experienced crew only.
The standout of the whole run is going to be the Wednesday and Thursday session. Wednesday morning is the pick of the bunch. We’re looking at 8ft of SSW groundswell with a 18-second period, and the energy is cranking with a reading of 3575. That’s a strong, powerful pulse. The offshore ESE wind keeps it clean and lined up. This is proper, heavy surf. The Thursday morning is right there with it too—8ft of SW swell at 16 seconds and a massive 4037 energy reading. Same offshore wind. These are the two sessions you want to be circling on the calendar.
The first couple of days, Tuesday and Wednesday, will have solid surf, but the window is open now, so it’s a case of getting out there before it starts to ease. The water temp is 78°, which is about normal for this time of year—nothing weird going on there.
Now, let’s break it down day by day.
Starting Tuesday the 18th, we have 6ft of SSW swell with a 16-second period. It’s a good start, clean with a moderate offshore breeze, and the energy is strong at 2883. Not the biggest, but a quality intro. The afternoon holds similar size and conditions. This is all at the Outside Corner, a reef and point setup that’s fairly consistent, but it’s an advanced wave. Don’t be a hero if you’re not ready for it.
Wednesday the 19th is where it steps up a gear. Morning sees 8ft at 18 seconds, and the energy jumps to 3575. This is a serious groundswell. The afternoon stays big at 8ft with a 17-second period and even more energy at 4037. The wind stays offshore, so it’s going to be powerful and clean.
Thursday the 20th keeps the pressure on. Morning is 8ft at 16 seconds, energy at 3479. Afternoon drops slightly to 8ft but still has strong energy at 3135. All still with that ESE offshore wind. This is the heart of the swell.
Friday the 21st is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning drops to 5ft with an 18-second period, which might create some fat, straight waves. The afternoon, however, builds back up to 8ft at 17 seconds, with energy back up to 3283. It’s still good, but the morning might be a bit gutless.
Saturday the 22nd sees the size ease a touch, 7ft in the morning with a fresher 30 km/h offshore wind. It’s clean but a bit more wind-affected. The afternoon settles to 7ft with a moderate breeze.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are still solid, with waves in the 6ft to 6ft range. The period is dropping slightly, so the quality is still there, but it's not the peak anymore.
From Tuesday the 25th through to the end of the window, the size stays in the 4ft to 8ft range. The period is a bit more inconsistent, dropping to 13-14 seconds at times. The wind turns more cross-offshore, which keeps it clean but not as perfectly groomed. There are still fun waves to be had, especially the 6ft to 7ft days with a better period.
For the second week, which starts around the 26th, it's a case of picking the windows. The long-range stuff from the 30th and the 1st of September looks promising, with the swell jumping back up to 7ft-8ft, but those are in the distance and less certain.
One quick note: if you're not an expert, this spot is going to be way over your head. With waves pushing past 5ft, it’s too much for beginners, and once it’s over 8ft, it’s strictly expert territory. For the crew it suits, this is a proper reef and point setup that handles the long period groundswell well.
Also, the crowds can show up here, it's listed as "sometimes", so you might not have it to yourself. With this much energy and a consistent break, it's worth the paddle.
Rusty, signing off.
