The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards at Outside Corner, a reef and point set-up that’s exposed to the swell and really starts pumping from Monday the 17th of August. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing radical there – just good old comfortable conditions.
The first proper session kicks off Monday afternoon with a clean 5ft SSW swell, period around 14 seconds, and a fresh ESE offshore breeze. The combined energy is moderate (893), so it’s not a monster, but it’s a fun, clean kick-off. The conditions are looking good, and the wind’s helping keep the surface glassy.
Tuesday the 18th picks up the pace – the swell jumps to 6ft from the SSW, with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the energy’s getting into the moderate-to-strong range (2883). The offshore wind holds steady, so it’s clean and powerful. This is where things start to get interesting for experienced surfers.
Wednesday the 19th is where it really cranks. The morning sees 8ft SSW swell at 18 seconds, with energy climbing to 3575 – that’s strong stuff. The wind is still offshore from the ESE, so the waves are going to be well-shaped and punchy. By the afternoon, the swell hits 8ft with 17 seconds and energy over 4100. This is big, powerful groundswell, and at this size, it’s strictly for the advanced crew. The point and reef setup handles this sort of long-period energy beautifully, so expect some proper lines.
Thursday the 20th holds the same quality – 8ft SSW swell, 16-second period, clean offshore winds, energy in the strong range (3695). It’s a top-tier day for those who can handle it.
Friday the 21st starts to back off a touch – morning swell drops to 5ft but with a very long period of 18 seconds and energy still strong (2671). The wind is still offshore, but the tide might be a bit tricky. The afternoon sees a jump back to 8ft, so there’s still plenty of power.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd have a bit of a mixed bag – the swell holds around 6ft to 7ft, with periods staying in the 15–16 second range. Winds are offshore for most of it, so the quality is there, but the energy’s gradually dropping. Sunday afternoon the wind goes cross-offshore, which still cleans things up, but it’s a little less ideal.
From Monday the 24th through to the end of the month, the pattern stays solid. Swell hangs around 5ft to 7ft, mostly from the SSW, with periods of 14 to 17 seconds. The wind is consistently offshore from the SE or ESE, keeping the waves clean. The combined energy in this stretch varies from moderate (926) to strong (2336), so there’s always something to ride.
The standout session? Look no further than Wednesday the 19th through to Thursday the 20th – that’s the peak of the run. Big, powerful, long-period groundswell, perfect offshore winds, and the reef and point are going to be firing. It’s not for the faint-hearted, but if you’ve got the skills, that’s the time to be out there.
Then on Monday the 31st of August and Tuesday the 1st of September, we get another pulse. The swell jumps back to 8ft with 18–21 second periods, and energy levels hit 4218, which is very strong. The wind is solid offshore again. This is a late-season gift, but it’s into the longer range, so keep an eye on it – it’s promising but not locked in just yet.
In between, there are a few marginal sessions – mostly around the 21st, 22nd, and some afternoon windows where the wind goes cross-off and the tide might be a factor – but overall, this is a fantastic 16-day run. Crowds at Outside Corner can be an issue sometimes, so if you want a quieter peak, the bigger days might see a few less paddlers out.
Rusty, signing off.
