The Lowdown
Rusty here with the outlook.
We’ve got a solid 16-day window locked in for Outside Corner. This is a reef and point setup, exposed and taking energy from the southwest, and it’s fairly consistent. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there. Expect clean conditions for most of the run, though the wind will freshen up at times.
Right off the bat, we start this Saturday morning, August 22. It’s already pumping. Swell is a meaty 7ft from the SSW with a long 16 seconds between waves. That’s serious groundswell. The combined energy reading is 2415 (moderate to strong), and with a moderate offshore breeze from the ESE, it’s going to be clean and lined up. This is an advanced wave – over 5ft and pushing towards 8ft, so it’s not for the faint-hearted, but for the crew that knows what they’re doing, this is a standout. Saturday afternoon holds similar, 7ft.
Sunday keeps the good times rolling. 6ft, still SSW, 15-second period. The wind stays offshore, and the energy is still solid at 1986 (moderate to strong). Another clean day.
Monday, August 24, the wind swings a bit cross-offshore. Swell is still 6 to 6ft with a long 16-second period, but the energy dips a touch to 1766. The quality slips a notch – still clean but not as perfect as the weekend.
Tuesday the 25th has the wind blowing fresh offshore, 30 km/h in the morning, but the swell is dropping to 6ft. The afternoon cleans up nicely with a moderate offshore breeze and the energy still holding at 1344. Wednesday the 26th sees a similar pattern – 5 to 5ft, 14-second swell, energy dropping to around 900. Good surf, but the real fire is cooling.
Thursday the 27th brings a spike. The afternoon kicks back up to 6ft, 15-second SSW swell with an energy reading of 2105 (moderate to strong). The wind is offshore and clean. That’s another highlight.
Now, mark your calendar for Friday, August 28. This is the biggest day of the whole window. 8ft from the SSW, 16-second period, and a combined energy of 3421 (strong). That’s proper. The wind is moderate offshore, so it’s going to be big, powerful, and clean. This is strictly for the experienced. If you’re an expert, that’s your day.
Saturday the 29th is still solid – 7ft, 15-second SSW, 1784 energy, and offshore wind. But by Sunday the 30th, the swell fades to 4ft, period drops to 13 seconds, and the wind turns cross-offshore in the afternoon. A step down.
Monday, August 31, has a bit of a bounce – 7ft but from the SSE with a short 9-second period, so it’s going to be a bit crumbly. The energy is 1345. Not a classic.
Tuesday, September 1, brings back the SW direction with a very long 20-second period. The morning is 4ft, but the afternoon jumps to 7ft with a 19-second period and a combined energy of 3161 (strong). That's a long-period groundswell, which at a reef and point like Outside Corner will set up beautifully, but the sets will be widely spaced. Wind is a bit fresh, 25 to 30 km/h offshore.
Wednesday the 2nd holds 7ft from the SW, 17-second period, and strong energy around 2700. Still clean and offshore. From Thursday the 3rd onwards, we taper off. Swells sit around 5 to 6ft, periods gradually dropping, and the wind goes cross-offshore more often by afternoon. The last few days into the second week are smaller and a bit less clean, but still rideable.
Overall, the standout is Friday, August 28 – big, clean, powerful swell. The opening weekend, August 22 and 23, also delivers world-class conditions. After that, there are plenty of good sessions, just not quite at that top level.
Rusty out.
