The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty, and we’ve got a solid run of swell coming in for the next couple of weeks. It’s not a beginner’s game, but for those who know what they’re doing, this stretch looks like a proper treat. The water’s sitting at 78°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so nothing weird going on there.

We kick off Friday the 21st of August with Impossibles pumping. This is a heavy reef break, very consistent, and it’s handling a 8 ft SSW swell with a long 17-second period – that’s proper groundswell, bringing heaps of energy (3305). The ESE offshore breeze is holding it clean and lined up. This is big, powerful surf, over 5 ft, so it’s not for learners; it’s for the experienced crew. Swell direction is SSW, and the spot likes it from the SW, so we’re in a good window. Crowds can happen here, but with waves this solid, there’ll be plenty to go around.

Saturday the 22nd keeps the same vibe. Still 7 ft to 7 ft SSW groundswell, still offshore from the ESE and SE – clean, powerful, and consistent. The energy dips a touch to 2417 then 2230, but it’s still very strong. This is quality stuff.

Sunday the 23rd drops a fraction to 6 ft, with that SSW groundswell hanging in at 15 seconds. The offshore breeze stays with us all day, and the energy is still strong at 1986 and 2256. Clean, punchy, and well-shaped for the reef.

Monday the 24th morning continues the trend with 6 ft SSW swell and offshore wind. Energy at 1766, still solid. The afternoon goes cross-offshore, so the surface gets a little bump – still surfable, but the morning is definitely the pick.

Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th stay on the 5 ft to 6 ft range with a long 16-second period, but by Wednesday afternoon the wind swings cross-off and swell drops to 5 ft with energy under 1000, so it’s getting weaker. The quality is still okay, but not the standout.

Thursday the 27th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning has a clean 4 ft SSW swell with a 16-second period and offshore wind, but then the afternoon jumps right up to 6 ft but goes cross-off. A little choppy.

Now, here’s the next real standout. Friday the 28th of August morning – we get a 8 ft SW swell with a 16-second period, offshore wind, and massive energy at 3415. That’s expert territory, over 8 ft, and the direction is bang on optimum. This is the best session of the whole run. The afternoon goes cross-off again, so make sure you’re out early.

Saturday the 29th morning is decent again with 6 ft SW swell and offshore winds (1440 energy), but it’s a step down. The afternoons keep turning cross-off through to the end of the month.

Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st of August show the swell dropping: 6 ft on Sunday morning with a shorter 13-second period, then by Monday morning we’re down to 2 ft with a very long 18-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, which can break a bit straight on a beach but works well on a reef like Impossibles. Still, it’s small. The energy is below 1000, so it’s weak.

Tuesday the 1st of September brings a new pulse – 6 ft SW swell with 17 seconds and big energy at 2471. Offshore morning wind, clean. This is another solid day, but the afternoon goes cross-off.

Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a ripper: 7 ft SW, 17-second period, gentle offshore breeze, and energy at 2898. That’s again over 7 ft, so expert only, and it’s beautifully clean. The afternoon stays offshore at 7 ft with energy at 2551 – a full day of quality.

Thursday the 3rd of September is lighter with light SSE winds and 6 ft to 6 ft SW swell. The winds are cross-off but light, so it’s still clean, just not as powerful. Energy at 1560 to 1371, moderate.

From Friday the 4th of September through to Saturday the 5th of September, we’re trailing off. Swell hangs around 5 ft to 5 ft with 13 to 14-second periods, offshore winds, and energy dropping under 1100. Decent, but nothing that’ll get the heart pumping like the earlier days.

So the absolute standouts? Friday the 28th of August morning – that 8 ft SW swell with offshore wind and 3415 energy is something special. And Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a close second – 7 ft, clean, and pumping. Both are for the experts only. For the rest of the run, mornings are your friend with the offshore breeze, and the afternoons are mostly cross-off, so plan accordingly.

Stay safe out there.
