The Lowdown

Alright, beautiful people, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.

We’ve got one spot absolutely firing for the next fortnight, so no messing around – we’re heading straight for the Impossibles. This isn’t a place for the faint-hearted; it’s an advanced-level reef break that is very consistent, so it’s going to be working almost non-stop. The water temp is sitting at 78°F, which is about average for the time of year, so a spring suit or just a rash vest will be fine.

The pattern kicks off proper from Tuesday the 18th. We’ve got a solid 6ft SSW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is strong at 2883, so there’s plenty of grunt in the water. With a clean offshore ESE breeze, conditions are going to be excellent. This swell holds through the afternoon too. Brace yourselves for Wednesday the 19th. The swell bumps up to 8ft, the period stretches to 18 seconds, and the energy jumps to 3575. The morning is clean again, but the real standout is Wednesday afternoon: 8ft of SSW swell at 17 seconds, with a 4037 energy reading and that same offshore wind. That’s the pick of the first week – heavy, powerful, and lined up.

Thursday and Friday the 20th and 21st keep the good times rolling with 8ft and 8ft swells, still long-period groundswell, and consistent offshore winds. Saturday the 22nd morning gets a bit fresh with the wind up to 19 mph, which could make it a little gnarly, but the afternoon cleans up nicely. The quality holds through the weekend and into the first part of the following week.

Now, a quick heads-up. From about Tuesday the 25th afternoon through the end of the month, the wind swings cross-offshore more often. The swell stays fun – 5ft to 7ft – but the surface won’t be as silky. It’s still good, just not *as* good. There’s a slight lull in energy around the 27th with shorter 13-second periods and only 890 energy, but the sets will still be there.

For the best of the best, lock in Wednesday the 19th afternoon. That 8ft SSW groundswell with those long 17- to 18-second intervals and clean offshore wind is about as good as it gets for experienced surfers. Because this place is very consistent and the crowds are listed as “sometimes,” you can expect a few people out, but with that much swell running, there’ll be plenty of waves to go around.

We’ve got a second pulse arriving around the 1st and 2nd of September. Tuesday the 1st sees 8ft to 8ft SW swell pushing in with energy over 3000, though the wind is cross-off. Wednesday the 2nd looks promising again with a 8ft SW swell and a gentle offshore breeze returning. That’s a promising long-range call, but keep an eye on it as we get closer.

If you’re not an advanced surfer, take note: this swell stays over 5ft for days and hits 8ft, so it’s too big for beginners and solidly in the expert-only zone for the peak days. This is a reef break, so the long-period groundswell will wrap in beautifully.

Get on it.

Rusty.
