The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at what’s coming down the pipe for the next couple of weeks. This is a bit of a special one, because we’ve really only got one spot that’s consistently on the cards, and it’s a ripper – Impossibles. This is a reef setup, so keep that in mind, and it’s for the advanced crew only. The water temp is sitting at 78°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, nothing unusual there.
The whole pattern is a long, consistent run of solid surf from the south-west. The energy is serious, especially in the middle of the first week, with combined swell energy readings hitting four-digit figures like 893 (moderate) to start, then jumping right up to 2883, 3575, and even 4101 (strong to very strong). That’s a lot of power in the water. The first few days are the real standouts, but the whole period is worth watching.
We kick off on Monday the 17th in the afternoon. It’s a bit smaller, with 5 ft of SSW swell, but the wind is offshore from the SE at 20 km/h, making for clean conditions. The energy is moderate at 893, but it’s a nice warm-up. Then Tuesday the 18th is where it really starts to fire. The swell bumps up to 6 ft, period jumps to 16 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell – and the energy is way up there at 2883. The wind is light offshore again, glassy in the morning. That’s a top pick.
But the absolute best of the bunch, the one you’d want to circle on the calendar, is Wednesday the 19th. The afternoon session shows 8 ft of SSW swell, a long 17-second period, and a massive 4101 combined energy. The wind is offshore from the ESE at 20 km/h. That is a serious, powerful, clean swell. It’s big, so only for the experienced, but it’s shaping up to be a ripper. Thursday the 20th is almost as good, with 8 ft and 3695 energy, still clean.
The energy stays high right through the rest of the first week and into the second. Friday the 21st morning drops a bit to 5 ft, but the period is still a long 18 seconds, and the energy is massive at 2671. The afternoon picks back up to 8 ft. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd keep the surf in the 7 ft to 6 ft range, with clean offshore winds in the mornings. The energy is still strong, 1999 to 1538.
The second week is a bit more of a mixed bag, but still good. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of the month, we’re seeing consistent 6 ft to 7 ft SSW swell, with periods mostly 15 to 16 seconds. The winds are a little more variable – some mornings are perfect offshore, but afternoons can get a bit cross-off. Still, the energy is strong, often in the 1500 to 2300 range. The waves will be there, just a little less perfect than that Wednesday peak.
Looking further out, the 31st of August into the 1st of September shows another big pulse. The morning of the 31st has a 5 ft swell with a huge 21-second period – that’s a very long period groundswell – and energy of 3469. The afternoon jumps to 7 ft at 19 seconds and 4218 energy. Then the 1st of September has 8 ft at 18 seconds. That’s a promising long-range signal, but remember, it’s a week and a half away, so we’ll keep an eye on it.
Overall, with only one break on the menu, and it’s a reef, the crowds are possible at times, but with this much consistent swell, it’s unlikely to be a total free-for-all. The real standout is that Wednesday the 19th afternoon session. Get on it if you can handle the size.
Rusty.
