The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Impossibles. This is a reef setup that’s very consistent and it’s about to get hammered with a long run of solid, powerful groundswell. The water temp is sitting at 77.9°, which is about 1.4° cooler than average for this time of year, so nothing too wild, just a touch of that autumn cool-down.
The pattern kicks off on Saturday the 22nd of August with a clean 6.9 ft swell from the SSW, packing a period of 16 seconds and a massive combined energy of 2204. That’s serious energy, and it’s blowing offshore from the SE at 12 mph. The waves will be powerful, lined up, and absolutely perfect for experienced surfers. This is a standout session—you’ll want to be in the water.
Sunday the 23rd keeps the goods coming. Morning shows 5.9 ft of SSW swell with a 15-second period, combined energy at 1986, and a clean ESE offshore breeze at 16 mph. The afternoon holds up even bigger with 2256 combined energy. The consistency is unreal, and the wind stays offshore, keeping the faces clean.
Monday the 24th is another day of solid SSW groundswell, 6.2 ft in the morning, 16-second period, and 1772 combined energy. Offshore wind from the SE at 12 mph. The afternoon sees a bit of a cross-off wind shift, but the swell holds at 5.9 ft and 1705 energy. It’s still clean, but the morning will be the pick.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are both excellent. Tuesday has 5.6 ft SSW swell, 16-second period, and offshore ESE winds at 16 mph. Wednesday dips slightly to 4.9 ft, but the period drops to 14 seconds and the energy is still in the 900s, with clean offshore winds. Perfect for a mid-week session.
Thursday the 27th is a bit of a mixed bag. The morning is clean with a lighter 3.6 ft swell and a 15-second period, but the cross-off wind makes it less than perfect. The afternoon jumps to 5.6 ft with a massive 2587 combined energy, but the wind is cross-off again, so it’s a visual treat rather than a paddle-out dream.
Friday the 28th is a big one. Morning hits 8.2 ft of SSW swell with a 16-second period and a ridiculous 3823 combined energy. The wind is cross-off, but the power is undeniable. This is for experts only—anything over 8.2 ft on a reef like this is a serious commitment.
The weekend of the 29th and 30th settles back into the 4.6 ft to 5.2 ft range, with a mix of offshore and cross-off winds. The 29th morning is the cleanest with a gentle offshore breeze and 1626 energy. The 30th has consistent 4.9 ft to 5.2 ft swell with clean offshore winds all day.
Monday the 31st of August brings a change in the swell direction, still SSW, but the period stretches to 19 seconds in the morning and 20 seconds in the afternoon. The swell height drops to 3.6 ft and 3.3 ft, but the combined energy is still strong at 1397 and 1660. That long period on a reef means the waves will be super clean, with long gaps between sets—perfect for a relaxed session.
The first of September kicks off with a return to size. 6.2 ft from the SW, 17-second period, and a huge 2879 combined energy. Offshore winds from the ESE at 16 mph. The afternoon holds 6.2 ft with 3105 energy. This is a standout window—get ready for some long, powerful walls.
September 2nd keeps the SW swell running, 6.9 ft in the morning with a 17-second period and 2490 energy. The wind is offshore, making for a proper session. The afternoon sees a cross-off shift, but the swell is still 6.6 ft.
From September 3rd onward, the swell slowly backs off. The 3rd has 5.2 ft to 4.9 ft, clean offshore winds, and good energy. The 4th drops to 3.9 ft and 3.6 ft with cross-off winds and weaker energy, a bit of a lull. The 5th and 6th of September bring back some 5.6 ft to 5.9 ft SSW swell with a 13 to 14-second period, but the winds are cross-off, and the quality is more marginal. Not a bad way to end the run, but the real magic is in that first week and a half.
Overall, this is a fantastic run of surf for Impossibles. The clear standouts are Saturday the 22nd of August and Tuesday the 1st of September—those days have the full package of size, period, energy, and offshore wind. Don’t miss it.
