Table - best surf conditions forecast for Impossibles over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got the outlook for Impossibles. This is a reef break that’s very consistent and advanced-level only, so you’ve got to bring your A-game. The water temp is sitting at 81°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year – nothing weird going on there.
The first real surf on offer starts Wednesday the 8th of July, and it’s a solid run of SSW swell. Wednesday morning sees 7 ft swell from the SSW with a 15-second period, and the wind is offshore from the ESE at 19 mph, keeping things clean. The combined wave energy is pumping at 1915 (moderate to strong). It’s a decent size, but with this quality, it’s more of a grinder than a clean gem. The whole week through to the 12th stays in the 5 ft to 7 ft range, with consistent offshore winds, but the forecast keeps saying “marginal surf or questionable tide,” so don’t expect perfection. The 13th of July (Monday) shows a weird drop to 2 ft with a long 23-second period – that’s a very long groundswell, which can be tricky as it’ll break straight at a reef but could be lined up if you pick your peak. The afternoon picks up to 3 ft with a 21-second period and 1047 energy, noted as “very good surf conditions.” That’s a standout for the gutsy crew who know how to ride long-period energy.
The real standout window starts around the 21st of July (Tuesday) and the 22nd (Wednesday). On the 21st afternoon, you’ve got 8 ft from the SSW with a 16-second period and 3692 energy – that’s strong, powerful stuff. The 22nd afternoon holds at 7 ft with 1926 energy, and it’s flagged as “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The 23rd (Thursday) morning drops to 6 ft but with a gentle 9 mph offshore from the ESE, making it glassy and clean – also rated excellent. That stretch from the 21st to the 23rd is the best on offer: big, solid groundswell, consistent offshore winds, and the reef will handle it well. But with 8 ft, this is expert-only territory – too big for beginners. Also, crowds are possible at Impossibles (sometimes), so be ready for company.
If you’re looking at the gap, there’s a lull on the 12th and 13th where the swell drops under 3 ft, but it’s not a dead zone – just smaller. From the 14th, it builds again. The 8th through 11th are solid but not pristine, while the 17th to 19th (Friday to Sunday) offer clean 5 ft swell with moderate offshore winds, noted as “very good surf conditions.” That’s a nice run for those who want a mellow session without the big stuff.
Overall, the best surf is on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of July – big, powerful, and clean. The 17th to 19th is a solid second pick for a more manageable size. Keep an eye on the tides, as the reef can be fickle.
Rusty.
