The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. Right off the bat, there’s no waiting around – the surf kicks in from Thursday the 20th of August and just keeps on pumping, especially for those who know what they’re doing.
We’re talking about Impossibles, a reef break that’s very consistent and fairly exposed to the swell. The water temperature is sitting at 78°, which is about 1° cooler than average for this time of year – so pretty much normal, no need for a thick wetsuit.
The big story here is a long, solid run of groundswell from the SW and SSW, with periods hanging between 14 and 18 seconds. That’s proper long-period energy, perfect for a reef like this. The combined energy is strong to very strong, ranging from around 1042 up to a massive 4676 over the whole period.
Now, if I had to pick the absolute standout, it’s Friday the 28th of August. The morning session is looking absolutely magic – a solid 8 ft swell from the SSW, a 17-second period, clean offshore wind from the SSW at just 6 mph, and a combined energy of 4297. That’s proper, sizeable, clean reef surfing for the experienced crew. The afternoon is also 8 ft from the SSW but with a light cross-off breeze, still very good.
The first few days, from the 20th through the 24th, are also firing. Thursday the 20th afternoon has a 8 ft SW swell with a 16-second period and a moderate offshore breeze – clean and powerful, with energy at 3091. Friday the 21st is similar, with a 8 ft SSW swell and an 18-second period in the morning, then 8 ft again in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday follow suit, with solid 7 ft to 6 ft SSW swells and clean offshore winds. It’s all excellent for experienced surfers.
From the 25th of August through to the 27th, the swell drops slightly to the 5 ft to 6 ft range, but still with decent period and clean conditions, though a bit more cross-off wind on some afternoons. Still well worth it.
Then we get that brilliant spike on the 28th. After that, the size drops back to 7 ft to 5 ft through the 29th and 30th, with more cross-off winds and a few rain showers on the 30th. The energy dips below 1000 on the 30th morning, but the quality holds.
Heading into the first week of September, the swell picks up again. Tuesday the 1st of September morning sees a 7 ft SW swell with an 18-second period and a gentle offshore breeze – that’s another top-tier session. The 2nd and 3rd of September keep delivering solid 7 ft to 7 ft SW and SSW swells, with moderate offshore winds. The 4th of September is still good at 6 ft, but the period drops a little.
Look, this is a rare and consistent run. The reef is known as “Impossibles” for a reason – it’s an advanced, tricky wave, and with most of these swells being over 7 ft, this is definitely not for beginners. If you’re an experienced surfer and you can get out there, this is a stunning stretch of swell. The crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few out, but with this much swell on offer, there should be plenty of waves to go around.
Stay safe, and enjoy the ride.
