The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, lookin' at the next few weeks for our local zone. Let's get into it.
Alright folks, the swell window is opening up, but it's gonna take a bit to get rolling. The first real action on the cards is a cracker of a session for the experienced crew, but we've got a big, long waiting game before the real fireworks.
Things start quiet, but the first real taste of surf comes Sunday morning, July 19th, at Boneyards. It's a reef break, advanced only, and it's consistent. We're looking at a 5 ft swell out of the SW, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is a light cross-off, so the setup is clean. The combined energy of all swells directed here is moderate (873). It's a solid start, but it's just a warm-up.
Monday the 20th brings a cleaner morning with offshore wind from the W at 15 mph. The swell drops a touch to 4 ft, but it's now a longer period SE groundswell at 12 seconds. This is a more refined wave, clean and lined up. The water temp is about average for this time of year.
Now, Tuesday the 21st of July morning is where it gets interesting. Boneyards is waking up with a 6 ft SW groundswell and a very long period of 15 seconds. The wind is glassy, from the ENE at 3 mph. This is a standout session for the experienced surfer, with excellent conditions. The combined energy of all swells directed here is strong (1552). The long period means long, clean lines, but it can be a bit tricky at a beach break. This is a reef, so it'll handle it beautifully. Afternoon sees the wind swing onshore, so get it while it's good.
Wednesday the 22nd keeps the quality up. Morning is clean with a 7 ft SW swell at 12 seconds and a cross-off breeze. The energy is still strong (1612). This is another excellent morning for the advanced crew.
We have a bit of a lull Thursday and Friday mornings, but the real monster is lining up. Friday morning, July 24th, is the big one. A massive 13 ft SSW groundswell, with a 16-second period, is heading straight for us. The wind is glassy, from the N at 3 mph. The combined energy of all swells directed here is very strong (7429). This is exceptional surf, but it's for experts only. This is a big, powerful, long-period groundswell at a reef break. It's a true standout, but do not take it lightly. The morning is the window, as the afternoon turns onshore.
Saturday the 25th still has a big 10 ft SW swell, but the onshore wind takes the shine off the afternoon. The morning is still glassy and excellent for experienced surfers.
The following week is a mixed bag of solid, but messy, swells. Sunday the 26th is a bit lumpy with cross-onshore winds, but the swell is still there. Monday the 27th is back to cleaner conditions and a solid 8 ft to 10 ft SSW swell, strong energy (3210 and 5750). This is another window for the experienced crew, but it's less clean than the peak days.
The end of July and into August gets blown out. Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are a write-off with strong onshore winds and poor conditions. A big SSE swell on Thursday the 30th brings 13 ft of short-period, messy energy, but it's a cross-shore breeze, so it's a bit of a gamble.
Friday the 31st of July and Saturday the 1st of August offer a glimmer of hope. Friday morning is clean with a 8 ft SSW swell, and Saturday the 1st has a 6 ft SSW swell with a light cross-off breeze. The energy is dropping (1027), but it's a clean, solid option for the experienced.
The final call on Sunday, August 2nd, is a clean morning with a 6 ft SSW swell, light wind, and moderate energy. It's a solid way to end the run, but the real magic was back on the 24th.
The standout is the Friday morning, July 24th. That 13 ft, 16-second groundswell with glassy conditions is as good as it gets for the experts. The Tuesday morning, July 21st, is a close second, offering a slightly smaller but still excellent, long-period groundswell in perfect conditions.
Stay safe out there, and don't be a hero in that 13 ft stuff unless you're truly ready.
Rusty.
