The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the lowdown on the wave action for our region. Over the next 16 days, we're looking at a solid run of swell, but you'll have to pick your windows carefully because the wind is going to be a real pain in the arse at times. The standout is gonna be a couple of sessions at Boneyards (reef) that’ll have you grinning from ear to ear, but there's a heap of other days where it's either too windy or the conditions are just average.
The water temperature here is about what you'd expect for this time of year, so no need to stress about a chilly wetsuit.
Right, let's get into it. Our first decent option kicks off on Thursday the 20th of August. Thursday morning is looking mint with a clean 13 ft SSW swell. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the WSW at 9 mph, and the combined energy is a massive 6059 (very strong). This is strictly for the experts only, as it’s a big, powerful reef break. The swell period is a long 14 seconds, so it’ll be a groundswell with plenty of energy.
Thursday afternoon sees the swell drop to 12 ft and the wind turns cross-shore, creating a bit of chop. It's still a big wave, but far from perfect.
Friday the 21st is a write-off with onshore winds all day, and Saturday the 22nd has strong winds, even if they’re cross-offshore. The swell is still around 8 ft, but the wind is howling at 25 mph, creating messy conditions.
Now, Sunday the 23rd of August is a highlight. The morning is clean with a 8 ft SW swell and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SW at 6 mph. The combined energy is 1465 (moderate) and it's described as excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is a great window for the more advanced crew.
Monday the 24th of August morning is also a beauty. Clean 7 ft SW swell, light cross-offshore wind, and a combined energy of 1348 (moderate). Another excellent session for the experienced.
We then have a big gap of poor conditions until a real standout appears. Tuesday the 25th of August morning is absolutely pumping. We're looking at a 10 ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period, which means it's a proper groundswell with heaps of grunt. The combined energy is a massive 5775 (very strong). The wind is a glassy offshore from the N at 3 mph, making it clean. This is exceptional surf for experts, so get on it if you've got the skills. The afternoon is a no-go with onshore winds.
Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are average, with the swell dropping and winds not cooperating.
Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are largely poor, with strong winds and choppy conditions. Saturday has a 10 ft swell but it's being smashed by a near gale-force wind, so unless you're a kite surfer, it's a stay-at-home day.
Sunday the 30th of August has a small 5 ft swell with onshore winds, so it's not great.
Now, looking ahead to the start of September. Monday the 31st of August morning has a 12 ft SW swell with a combined energy of 4361 (very strong), but it's a bit choppy with cross-onshore winds. The afternoon is worse. Tuesday the 1st of September is a big one though. The whole day is looking clean with a 15 ft SW swell! The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, and the combined energy is a massive 6332 (very strong). This is a massive swell, only for the experts, and it's a promising but less certain long-range call.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is a dream. Glassy conditions with a 8 ft SW swell. The combined energy is 1754 (moderate) and it's excellent for experienced surfers. The wind is dead calm, so it'll be clean as a whistle.
After that, the swell drops off and the wind picks up, leading to a few days of small, poor surf to finish the outlook.
So, if you're an expert, don't miss Tuesday the 25th of August morning and the whole day of Tuesday the 1st of September. For the experienced crew, Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th of August mornings are your best bet.
Rusty.
