The Lowdown
Righto, grab a coffee and settle in, because we've got a wild ride ahead over the next couple of weeks. The long-range charts are showing some serious pulse, but it’s gonna take a bit of patience to get to the real gems. There’s a bit of a quiet start, but don’t let that fool you.
Alright, for the first week, we’re mainly looking at Boneyards. This is an advanced reef setup, so it’s not one for the beginners. To kick things off, Friday morning the 21st of August, we see a solid 8 ft SW swell rolling in with a 12-second period. The combined energy is pumping hard at 1748 (moderate to strong), and the water is running at 56°, which is far colder than usual for this time of year—that's a massive 10° below the long-term average, so bring the thickest wetsuit you’ve got. The wind is light offshore from the ESE at just 3 mph, which will have it looking clean, but the forecast says it’s marginal, likely due to tide. It’s not the standout.
The first genuine standout is Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. We’ve got a 8 ft SW swell, 11-second period, and a light 6 mph cross-offshore breeze from the SW. Combined energy is a beefy 1764 (moderate to strong), and conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. The wind will keep the faces nice and clean. That’s the session to aim for early doors. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, so you might have a few out, but the quality should be worth the paddle.
Then Monday the 24th holds a similar vibe: 7 ft SW swell, 12-second period, with light cross-offshore winds again. Clean and good for experienced crew.
But the real standout, the one that gets the blood pumping, is Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. Glassy conditions, mate. Absolutely glassy. There’s not a breath of wind from the SSW at just 3 mph. That’s going to make the 10 ft SW swell (14-second period, very long period groundswell) look like a work of art. The combined energy is massive at 3420 (very strong wave energy). For an advanced reef break with that direction and period, this is going to be top-tier. Just remember, at over 8 ft, this one is strictly for the experts only. That’s the must-paddle session of the first week.
We then hit a bit of a lull from Wednesday the 26th through to the end of the month. The wind swings onshore and the quality drops significantly. There are a few clean windows early on the 27th and 28th, but with smaller swell (4-6 ft), the energy is weaker. Saturday the 29th shows a late kick of 12 ft, but it’s a short period (9 seconds) and windy, so it’s only a marginal prospect. Sunday the 30th gets blown out by a 28 mph cross-offshore, making it a washout.
The first few days of September are messy, with onshore winds and mixed-up seas, not worth a mention. However, the long-range stuff gets very interesting.
We’ve got a massive window coming up. Wednesday afternoon, the 2nd of September, shows a 12 ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is an enormous 6344 (very strong). Wind is strong cross-offshore at 19 mph, which might add some texture, but the raw power is there. This is a promising but less certain call this far out.
Then, Thursday afternoon, the 3rd of September, is a monster. The data is showing a 21 ft SW swell, with a 13-second period, and the combined energy hits a staggering 14661 (very strong). The wind is favorable, but the file explicitly says the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That is a full-on, life-affirming, only-for-the-mad session if it materialises. This is a long-range standout to keep an extremely close eye on, but I’d only be looking at this from the safety of the car park unless you’re a charger.
The clean up comes on Saturday morning the 5th of September with glassy conditions and a much more manageable 5 ft SSW swell. That’ll be a nice finisher for the brave.
