G’day, Rusty here. Looks like we’ve got a solid run of swell ahead at Boneyards, but it’s gonna come with plenty of punch—this is advanced territory only, so if you’re not comfortable in the thick of it, sit this one out.
We kick off on Saturday July 4th with a chunky 7 ft SE groundswell, period of 12 seconds, and cross-off NW wind around 6 mph. The water’s sitting at 63°—that’s nearly 3° cooler than usual for this time of year, so you’ll feel that bite. The energy’s pumping at 1301 (strong), with clean conditions and well-shaped waves. Sets will roll through with good gaps between them, making the paddle-out manageable if you’re experienced. The reef setup will handle that long period just fine. Crowds are possible here, but it’s not a circus spot.
Sunday the 5th drops a notch to 5 ft SE swell, period 11 seconds, with a morning cross-off NNW breeze and afternoon glass-off with light S wind. That afternoon session is an absolute beauty—clean, smooth, and every bit as fun as it sounds. Energy’s down to 701 (moderate), but the quality is high.
Monday the 6th brings a shift: 6 ft SW groundswell, 12-second period, with glassy NNW wind in the morning. That’s another standout. Energy jumps to 1119 (moderate-strong). Morning is the go; by afternoon the onshore ESE wind freshens to 6 mph and spoils it.
Tuesday the 7th holds steady with 7 ft SW swell, 12 seconds, and cross-off WSW wind all day. Energy sits around 1350 (strong) and both sessions are firing for those who can handle it. Crowds may show up—just a heads up.
Now, here comes a proper pulse. Thursday July 9th, morning session: 10 ft SSW groundswell, 14-second period, dead calm—zero wind. That’s glass, absolute glass. Energy hits 3966 (very strong). This is the best stretch on offer. Only for experts at this size. Afternoon sees a slight onshore bump from the SSE at 3 mph, still rideable but not as clean. Friday the 10th keeps that 10 ft SSW swell rolling, with glassy W wind in the morning again—energy 2963 (very strong). If you want a session to remember, that Thursday or Friday morning is it. But Friday afternoon the bottom falls out: onshore SE wind at 12 mph and light rain, so get in early.
Saturday the 11th and Sunday the 12th are a write-off for quality due to strong cross-on winds over 19 mph, then we get a brief window Sunday afternoon: 4 ft E swell, 9-second period, glassy NNW wind—nice and mellow, but short period means it won’t have much push. Energy down to 514 (weak-moderate).
From Monday the 13th through to Friday July 17th, it’s all under 5 ft with poor winds and low energy—there’s a long stretch of nothing special here. Mostly below 500 energy, wind howling from the WSW, and the swell’s a mix of short-period junk. A couple of afternoons like Sunday July 19th show 5 ft SW swell, 12 seconds, cross-off SW wind at 9 mph, with energy 566 (moderate)—decent for a last-day mellow wave, but nothing compared to that first week.
Bottom line: the standout is Thursday the 9th and Friday the 10th of July, early mornings at Boneyards. Big, clean, powerful groundswell, glassy wind, and the reef is your friend here. If you’re a paddler, that’s your window. After that, get ready for a dry spell.
