The Lowdown

Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming our way. It’s a proper mixed bag for the next couple of weeks, but there are definitely some sessions you won't want to miss.

The clear standout of the whole run is shaping up to be Thursday, the 20th. We've got a serious pulse of southwest groundswell tearing through, and the energy readings are off the charts at a strong 5562. The buoys are showing a solid 13ft of pure SW groundswell. With the wind staying light and cross-off, Boneyards is going to be a proper, heavy sight for those who are up for it. This is advanced, expert-level territory only. You'll need your biggest board and your A-game. It’s going to be a freight train.

The days before that are all about building momentum. Tuesday the 18th has clean, workable waves in the 7ft to 8ft range, and the energy is building nicely. It’s a good sign of things to come. Wednesday the 19th holds in there too, with a solid 10ft of surf and light winds in the morning, giving you a taste of what’s ahead before the big day.

After Thursday’s peak, we see the size hold but the quality starts to drop. Friday morning the 21st is still surfable at around 8ft, but the wind swings onshore, making things a bit ragged. Saturday the 22nd is a write-off—that wind is howling at 35-45 km/h and the surf is just a messy, blown-out disaster. We'll be watching that one from the car park. Sunday the 23rd is much better, with clean 13ft to 11ft surf all day. It’s not quite the peak of Thursday, but it’s still well overhead and the light winds will have it looking perfect.

Then we hit a bit of a lull. Monday and Tuesday, the 24th and 25th, drop off in size and the wind turns pretty average. It’s looking small and messy. However, Wednesday the 26th is a sneaky good one. The swell dips to around 6ft but it cleans right up, and the Wednesday afternoon session is looking absolutely glassy with light winds. That’s a prime pick for the experienced surfers who want the power of the earlier swells but without the chaotic energy. This is also where I should note that Boneyards is a consistent reef break, and while it can get crowded, that light wind will have it firing.

After that, we get a bit of a gap where things are small and windy. The end of the run, however, is promising. Saturday the 29th and Monday the 31st see another long-period SW groundswell fill in, with that period stretching out to a very long 15 seconds. It’s not huge, around 8ft to 8ft, but those long-period lines will be reeling down the reef with clean, glassy conditions on offer in the mornings. This is prime stuff for this setup.

Looking further ahead to the 2nd of September, there are signs of a big pulse of energy, but that’s a long way off and the wind is looking iffy. It's one to keep in the back of your mind, but I wouldn't be booking the time off work just yet.

One thing I gotta say—the water is absolutely freezing. We're talking about 53° here, which is a massive 13° colder than what’s normal for this time of year. It’s a serious cold-water mission, so the thickest suit, hood, and booties are non-negotiable.

All in all, the pick of the fortnight is unmissable: Thursday the 20th is the big one. The runner-up is Wednesday the 26th afternoon or Saturday morning the 29th for a cleaner, more manageable session on the same swell.

Rusty out.
