The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, let’s get into it. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there are some serious days on the menu if you’re patient.

Right now, things are a bit messy. The first surf worth paddling out for doesn't really turn up until Sunday, the 23rd of August. Before that, the wind is howling and the conditions are cooked, so give it a miss. On Saturday the 22nd, it’s a write-off – we’ve got 25 mph winds on the cross-off and the water is a freezing 57°F, which is a whopping 9°F colder than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so bring a thick hood if you even think about it.

The first real highlight fires up on Sunday morning, the 23rd. Boneyards is the only break on the card, and Sunday morning is a beauty. We’re looking at a clean 8 ft swell from the SW with a solid 11-second period. The wind is a light 3 mph cross-off, which will keep the face smooth. The combined energy is a strong 1377, so there’s plenty of push. This is one for experienced surfers – it’s a reef break that can handle that size, and with the offshore influence, the barrels should be there. It’s consistent, so you won’t be waiting around. Just know that crowds are possible here.

Monday the 24th is a step down in size and quality. The swell drops to 7 ft and the wind goes cross-shore, making it a bit lumpy. Still surfable for the keen, but not a standout. The energy is moderate at 1100.

Now, Tuesday the 25th is a big one. The morning session at Boneyards is pumping. A 10 ft SW swell, period 14 seconds, and a light 6 mph cross-off wind. That’s a solid groundswell, clean, and the energy reading is a very strong 3476. This is for advanced surfers only – over 8 ft is expert territory, and this is right there. The long period will make it powerful, and on a reef, that’s a recipe for heavy waves. Afternoon goes a bit crumbly with a cross wind, so get it early.

Wednesday the 26th is a complete write-off. A 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the east ruins the surface, even though the swell is still big (10 ft). It might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Energy is a massive 4225, but the quality is zero.

Thursday the 27th stays poor with onshore flow. Friday the 28th sees the swell drop to 5 ft with onshore wind – still not good. Saturday the 29th is tiny and windy, barely worth a mention.

The next proper stand-out rolls in on Sunday the 30th of August. The swell jumps back up to a thumping 12 ft from the SW, period 12 seconds. The wind is light and cross-shore in the morning, so the sets will have some shape. This is another big one only for experts, with very strong energy (3778). Monday the 31st is still good, with an 8 ft swell and clean cross-off winds – a solid option for experienced surfers.

Looking further ahead, there’s a gem on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning is glassy – zero wind, just a little air movement. A 7 ft SW groundswell (period 11 seconds) and glassy conditions? That’s the kind of morning you dream about. The energy is moderate at 1113, but the quality is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets ruined by a strong onshore, so make it a dawn patrol.

The window runs dry again before another big pulse shows up on Thursday the 3rd of September. This is a long-range promise, so don’t book the day off yet. It looks huge: an 12 ft SW swell with a very long 16-second period. The energy is a staggering 5760. Wind is light cross-shore, so conditions could be epic for the brave. This is strictly for experts.

Friday the 4th of September might be the pick of the whole run, if it holds. A 13 ft SW swell, period 14 seconds, with a light cross-off wind. The energy is a massive 5447, and the forecast says "exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers." This is a proper swell event. The weekend of the 5th and 6th of September stays solid, with 10 ft+ swells and clean winds, so there’s a good stretch of big, clean surf for those who can handle it.

To sum it up: the best on offer are Sunday morning the 23rd of August for a clean start, Tuesday morning the 25th of August for a big, clean groundswell, and Tuesday morning the 1st of September for a glassy, manageable swell. The absolute standout, if it comes through, is Friday the 4th of September with that 13 ft beast. Keep an eye on the forecast, because that one could be special.

Rusty.
