The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Alright, we’ve got a solid 16-day window shaping up, but don’t get too excited for the first few days. The real magic is a bit further out. There’s a bit of a gap to start with, but once it kicks off, it’s game on.
Things start on Friday, the 17th of July. We’re looking at Boneyards, a heavy reef break for the advanced crew. Friday morning is pumping with a solid 10ft SW swell, but that 12-second period gives it some real grunt. The wind is a light cross-off, so it’s clean. The water is sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than average for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit. The energy is strong, real strong, around 2263. This is expert territory, no doubt about it. Friday afternoon drops off a bit to 8ft, but the wind goes cross and it gets a bit messier. Not the best.
Saturday, the 18th, and Sunday, the 19th, are smaller, with waves around 4ft to 5ft, and a mix of cross-off winds. The energy drops into the moderate range (around 770-782). It’s clean, but nothing to write home about. Sunday afternoon gets blown out by a fresh 19 mph wind, so just forget that.
Now, Monday the 20th is where we start to see a spike. The morning is a beauty. Glassy conditions with a 8ft SW swell. The energy is up to 1467, and it’s clean as a whistle. That’s a solid session for the experienced surfer. The afternoon turns onshore and gets a bit messy, so get it in the morning.
Tuesday the 21st has a real standout morning. Dead calm, glassy, with a clean 4ft SW swell and a 12-second period. The energy is still moderate at 1034, but the conditions are perfect. It’s a sneaky good day for the more manageable swell.
The real standout, the one you mark on your calendar, is Wednesday the 22nd of July. The afternoon session is absolute fire. An 8ft SW swell, 13-second period, and a clean cross-off wind. The energy is monstrous at 4338. This is the pick of the early run. The morning is also good, but the afternoon is the one.
Then, on Thursday the 23rd, we get an 12ft SW swell in the morning with glassy NE winds. The energy is huge at 3178. This is big, powerful, and clean. Only for experts. The afternoon gets onshore, so morning mission is the only way.
Now, hold on to your boards. Friday the 24th of July is the absolute best on offer. The morning is a dream. Glassy, with an 12ft SW swell and a very long 16-second period. The energy is off the charts at 6095. This is exceptional, proper groundswell. This kind of long period can be a bit straight at beach breaks, but Boneyards is a reef, so it should handle it beautifully. It will be ultra-clean, super powerful, with long lulls. This is a once-in-a-forecast session for the experts. The afternoon is still a big 12ft, but the wind goes cross, so it’s not as perfect.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is a write-off. The swell is huge, 12ft to 13ft, but the wind is strong and onshore or cross-on, making it a choppy mess. The energy is high, but the quality is poor. If you’re into kiting, it might be interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
Monday the 27th gets a nice turn. Clean offshore wind from the NW with a solid 8ft SW swell. The energy is 3406. Another good one for the experienced crew.
The last few days of July and into the 1st of August, the swell drops off and the wind gets messy again. There’s a small window on Tuesday the 28th morning with a glassy 6ft SW swell, but nothing special. The 31st of July has a huge 13ft SW swell with clean cross-off winds, which is promising, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
The absolute standout is Friday the 24th of July. Get on it if you can handle the size.
Stay safe.
Rusty.
