The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming down the pipe for our stretch of coast. We’ve got a solid run of activity on the horizon, so let’s break it down day by day.
The opening salvos are a bit of a mixed bag for Monday. We’ve got a 8ft SW swell rolling in with a solid 14-second period, and the energy reading is strong at 2115. The wave comment even calls it excellent for experienced surfers, but the wind is a cross-offshore breeze at just 3 mph, which will keep things pretty clean. It’s a decent start, but the afternoon backs right off to a weak 3ft E swell, so don’t expect much after lunch.
Tuesday morning sees the swell build back up to 7ft from the SW, but the wind picks up to 9 mph. The afternoon is where it gets interesting – we jump to 8ft SW with a 13-second period and a strong energy reading of 2306. The conditions are called excellent for experienced surfers, and with a lighter 6 mph cross-offshore, it’s looking like a proper session.
Wednesday morning is shaping up to be the first standout of the week. We’ve got a 10ft SW groundswell, a 13-second period, and the energy is pumping at 2451. The wind is off at 3 mph, making it glassy and clean. This is a day for the experienced crew; 10ft is getting into serious territory. The afternoon, however, gets messy with a 19 mph WSW cross-offshore wind and quality dropping off.
Thursday is all about size. The morning pulls in at 12ft from the SW with a 13-second period and a massive energy jump to 4823. The wind is a gentle cross-off at 9 mph, so it’ll be powerful and lined up. The afternoon sees the swell peak at 13ft, energy pushing 5025, but the wind switches to a cross-shore, bringing in some cross-chop. This is big, heavy, expert-only stuff.
Friday is a step down in size but a big step down in quality. The morning wind switches onshore, ruining the 8ft SW swell that’s still cleaning up from Thursday. The afternoon has a slight cross-onshore breeze and small wind ripples. It’s going to be a messy one.
We’ve got a couple of days of building, messy conditions through the weekend. Saturday has size, but the wind is blowing at 16 mph. Sunday morning brings a huge 15ft SSW swell with a 14-second period and a massive energy reading of 7830, but the quality scores are low due to the moderate cross-offshore wind. This is a raw, powerful beast of a day.
Monday the 24th is interesting. The swell drops to 8ft from the S with a very long 16-second period, but the onshore breeze will chop it up. That long-period groundswell can be tricky at the beach breaks, but at a reef like this, it could be incredible if the wind cooperates. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it will.
The middle of next week looks poor. Tuesday the 25th is mostly cross-onshore winds and dropping swell. This is not a time for surfing.
Now, for the real standout. Wednesday the 26th. The finder is calling for exceptional surf conditions for expert surfers. We’ve got a 10ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period, and the energy is strong at 5782. The morning wind is a light cross-off from the NW, keeping things clean. This is the pick of the entire forecast. That kind of period on a reef setup like Boneyards is where the magic happens. It's a long way out, so treat it as promising, but the potential is through the roof.
The rest of the run after that is a mixed bag of medium swells and cross-off winds. Thursday the 27th morning is worth a mention – 7ft SW with a 13-second period and glassy conditions. A proper clean session for experienced surfers. After that, the wind stays cross-off but picks up, and the swell is consistent but nothing special. The final day, Tuesday the 1st of September, sees a 10ft SSW swell with a cross-onshore wind, which is going to be choppy and messy.
So, if you’re an experienced surfer, get after it on Wednesday morning the 19th and Thursday the 20th. But if you want the cream of the crop, mark your calendar for Wednesday morning the 26th of August. That’s the one. Keep it on your radar.
Rusty, out.
