The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at the Point, a reef and point set-up that’s sheltered and loves a good SSW. Water’s sitting at 64°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you might want to grab a thicker wetsuit or at least a bootie.
The action kicks off Thursday the 16th with a solid 10ft SW swell and a 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell with plenty of energy (3246). Morning has a light WNW cross-off breeze, so it’s clean and lined up. The afternoon turns offshore with a SW breeze, dropping to 8ft but still 13 seconds. This is big, powerful surf – definitely for experienced surfers only. It’s consistent and the crowd can be there sometimes, but with that size, it’ll thin out.
Friday the 17th keeps the momentum with 10ft SW in the morning, 12-second period, and a light WSW cross-off. That’s clean, punchy waves. The afternoon eases to 8ft with a 3 mph SSW cross-off – still very good, still for the experienced. The weekend sees a drop: Saturday the 18th morning has 5ft SW, 10 seconds, and the afternoon picks back up to 7ft with a SW offshore. Good, but not the standout. Sunday the 19th has a morning lull at 3ft, but the afternoon pumps up to 8ft SW though with a 22 mph cross-off – that’s fresh breeze and messy, marginal.
Now, the real standout arrives on Thursday the 23rd. The morning is glassy, 15ft SW swell with a 14-second period, and the combined energy is huge (8674). That’s a long, powerful groundswell on a point break – it’ll be fast, deep, and reeling. Glassy conditions mean no wind, just perfect lines. Friday the 24th is even better: morning glassy again, 13ft SSW with a 15-second period – even longer period, more energy (6594). On a point, this is world-class, but only for experts. The crowd factor is there, but at this size, it’s a select crew.
There’s a gap after the 24th with inconsistent surf, but the next big one is Saturday the 25th. Morning has a 15ft SSW swell with an 18-second period – that’s a very long-period groundswell, and the energy is massive (12799). It’s cross-on though, so a bit of wind chop. But the afternoon turns glassy, 13ft SW, 16 seconds – clean, epic, and again for experts only. Sunday the 26th morning is glassy with 11ft SW, 14 seconds – still pumping but a touch smaller.
The second week eases off. Monday the 27th has clean offshore winds, 6ft to 5ft SW, still good. Tuesday the 28th morning is clean with 7ft SW, but the afternoon turns choppy. Wednesday the 29th has a clean morning, 7ft SW, but the afternoon gets a fresh breeze. After that, there’s a few days of small, marginal surf from the 30th into the 31st, with a poor finish on the 31st as strong onshore winds ruin the 8ft to 10ft SW swell.
The best days are clear: Thursday the 23rd morning, Friday the 24th morning, and Saturday the 25th afternoon. That’s a three-day window of glassy, solid, long-period groundswell on a point break. It doesn’t get much better. Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
