Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf coming up at Weld Road, a reef break that picks up the SW groundswell. The water’s sitting at 59°, which is a touch warmer than the usual for this time of year – nothing extreme, but you’ll notice it.
The pattern kicks off with a bit of a messy start. Saturday afternoon the 4th is a write-off: 5ft swell from the west with a strong cross-onshore blowing at 25 mph – leave the board at home. Sunday morning the 5th is still a bit iffy with clean lines but the swell’s up at 8ft from the northwest and the wind’s onshore, so it’s a pass.
But then, Sunday afternoon the 5th really turns it on. The wind drops to glassy – dead calm – and we’ve got a 4ft swell from the WSW with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s pure groundswell with heaps of energy (1132). The reef will groom it into some beautiful, clean lines. If you’re solid intermediate and up, this is the standout of the whole outlook. Just be aware, long period like that can make a beach break sectiony, but at a reef it’ll be peaky and perfect.
Monday the 6th is for experts only. Morning brings 10ft from the WSW with fresh cross-onshore, lumpy and messy. Afternoon sees the swell jump to 12ft from the WSW with a 17-second period – that’s 6359 combined energy, very strong. Wind is a gentle cross-shore, but the size is well into the “only for the very skilled” zone.
Tuesday the 7th cleans right up. Offshore wind from the SSE in the afternoon with 8ft from SW at 15 seconds – excellent conditions for experienced surfers. Wednesday the 8th is also clean, with a lighter 5ft from SW and offshore breezes.
The standout of the second week? Thursday the 9th afternoon. Clean offshore wind from the SSE at 6 mph, 10ft swell from the WSW with 15 seconds, and a massive 4350 combined energy. Absolutely pumping for the big-wave crew.
From Friday the 10th through Sunday the 12th, we’ve got a run of clean, offshore days with waves in the 5ft to 8ft range – solid, consistent, and groomed.
By the 13th and 14th, the swell eases into the 3ft to 5ft zone with glassy or clean conditions. Still fun, but smaller.
Then from the 16th onwards, the wind turns cross or cross-onshore, and the swell gets big again – 8ft to 12ft – but the quality drops right off with fresh onshore winds. By the 18th and 19th, it’s close to a write-off with heavy rain, strong onshore winds, and lumpy, choppy surf.
So, for my money: Sunday afternoon the 5th is the one to circle for clean, glassy perfection on a medium swell, and Thursday the 9th afternoon is the big-wave highlight for the experienced crew.
Rusty.
