The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Weld Road. The next couple of weeks are a mixed bag, with some real moments of magic if you pick your windows, but also some serious size and wind that will shut things down for the average punter.
The first decent window opens up this Sunday, July 19th. It’s not the cleanest start, with a cross-shore wind, but we’ve got a solid 8ft swell from the WSW with a very long period of 16 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy – the combined energy is pumping at 3602. The water’s sitting at 59°, which is about normal for this time of year. This long-period stuff is best on a reef setup like Weld Road, so it should line up well. Sunday afternoon cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore breeze, holding around 8ft with the same long period. A solid start to the week.
Monday the 20th is a step down in size but a step up in quality. We’re looking at 7ft swell from the WSW in the morning, dropping to 6ft by the afternoon. The wind turns light easterly and cross-offshore, which is a major positive. The conditions are clean, and the combined energy is still a solid 1611 dropping to 1369. This is a good, surfable day for experienced surfers through the afternoon.
But the real standout, the one you circle on the calendar, is Tuesday July 21st. The morning is absolute glass. Zero wind. Calm as a lake. The swell is a clean 5ft from the SW with a 13-second period, giving a combined energy of 925. That’s perfect, clean, lined-up surf. The kind of morning where you don’t want to be anywhere else but in the water. It does get a bit of a cross-shore breeze in the afternoon, so get on it early.
Wednesday the 22nd has a pulse of short-period windswell. The swell drops to 6ft but the period plummets to 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 634. It’s a choppier, less powerful wave. The afternoon cleans up with a cross-offshore breeze, but the short period means it won’t have the same punch as the groundswell earlier in the week.
From Thursday the 23rd onwards, things start to get a bit messy. The wind shifts onshore, and the size starts to build again. By Friday the 24th, we’re looking at 8ft but with strong onshore winds and a short period. It’s going to be a battle.
The weekend of the 25th and 26th is pretty much a write-off. We’re talking massive swell – 15ft to 18ft – with gale-force cross-onshore winds. The combined energy goes through the roof, hitting 12693, but it’s going to be a churning, blown-out mess. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing. Not for the faint of heart.
Then, from the 27th of July through the 3rd of August, the swell is consistently huge – 10ft to 18ft – with favorable cross-offshore winds at times, but the notes keep saying the swell is too big for this break. The combined energy values are massive (over 7000 in some cases), and the sets will be intimidating. This is expert-only, big-wave territory. Even then, you’ll want to be very sure of your abilities. The wind is clean on the 27th, 2nd of August, and the 3rd of August, but the size is just relentless.
So, the bottom line: The standouts are Tuesday morning, July 21st, for the absolute glassy perfection, and Monday afternoon, July 20th, for the clean, cross-offshore conditions on a solid 7ft swell. Get out there and get it while it’s good.
Rusty.
