The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the pipe for Weld Road over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The standout window is definitely the middle of this week, with some real quality on offer. Water temp is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, no major surprises there.
The surf really kicks off proper on Wednesday the 19th. Wednesday morning at Weld Road, we’re looking at clean 7ft surf from the WSW, with a nice 12-second interval giving it some push. The wind is offshore from the SSE at 9 mph, and it’s going to be glassy. The combined energy is moderate at 3060. This is legitimately good surf for the experienced crew. Wednesday afternoon holds similar form, a touch bigger at 8ft, with a long 16-second period from the WSW and the same offshore wind. Energy jumps to 3793. That afternoon session is a genuine standout.
Thursday the 20th morning is the real gem. The wind is glassy – absolute mill pond conditions – with a clean 7ft of WSW swell at 14 seconds. Combined energy is moderate (1644). For a reef break like Weld Road, that’s as good as it gets. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
The quality starts to fade from Thursday afternoon and into the weekend, as wind swings cross-shore and onshore. The swell stays rideable but gets lumpy, so don’t expect the same clean lines.
From Friday the 22nd through the following week, there’s a messy stretch. The swell is all over the place, wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and a lot of it gets blown out. The 23rd of August sees the swell jump above 10ft, but it’s accompanied by strong cross-winds, making it a rough one. By Sunday the 24th, the swell gets huge – think 13ft+ from the WSW with very strong energy (13554). That’s expert territory only, and with cross-winds it’s more of a spectacle than a surf.
After a pretty ordinary week of messy conditions with onshore winds, we get another pulse at the very end. Sunday the 30th of August brings a massive 18ft WSW groundswell, with a strong 12-second period. The wind is offshore from the SE at 22 mph, so it’ll be clean, but this is strictly for the big-wave chargers. Energy is very strong at 9296. Monday the 31st sees a 23ft monster from the WSW (23557 energy) with offshore winds. Again, experts only.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning looks glassy with 13ft of swell, still too big for most, but worth a look if you’ve got the nerve.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is the last good call in the window. Glassy conditions again, with a more manageable 10ft of WSW swell at 11 seconds. Combined energy is moderate (2461). This is for experienced surfers, and it’s a solid way to wrap up the period.
To sum it up: Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are your true standouts. The rest of the run is either too big, too messy, or too wind-affected for the average surfer.
Rusty.
