The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty here. We’ve got a big, powerful SW groundswell building in for Weld Road (reef) over the next couple of days, but here’s the thing — it’s going to be way too big for most of us, pumping out energy readings well into the thousands. The water’s sitting at 57.4°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
Sunday 23rd afternoon kicks things off with a solid 14.8 ft swell from the west, period around 11 seconds, but it’s blowing 22 mph cross-shore from the WSW. That wind’s going to chop things up — lumpy cross-chop — and the swell’s already too big for this break, so honestly, unless you’re an absolute expert looking for a battle, I’d sit this one out.
Come Monday 24th morning, things get interesting but still oversized. We’ve got a 16.4 ft WSW swell rolling in with a 15-second period — that’s proper groundswell, long-period, and the energy’s jacked up high. The wind’s shifted to a 16 mph cross-offshore from the WSW, which is clean. But at over 8.2 ft, this is expert-only territory. The same afternoon sees 14.8 ft still, but cross-shore wind at 12 mph brings back some chop.
Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th drop off to 9.8 ft and 8.2 ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-on, and the scores are marginal. It’s not worth paddling out for most — the 15-second period means it’ll be lined up but straight at a beach break, so points better. Still, the energy’s there but the quality’s not.
The standout window? I’d say Monday 24th morning is the one if you’re an experienced charger — that 16.4 ft WSW swell with 15-second period and clean cross-offshore wind is a rare combo, but it’s only for experts. Otherwise, nothing else in the first week really stacks up for a good, manageable session.
We hit a gap from Wednesday 26th afternoon right through to Friday 28th, with scores dropping to poor surf, messy wind, rain showers. Then Saturday 29th afternoon shows a glimmer: 7.2 ft WSW swell, 10-second period, and cross-offshore wind from the SW at 12 mph giving clean conditions. That’s a maybe for intermediates, but the energy’s only moderate.
Sunday 30th afternoon throws up another big one — 11.5 ft WSW swell, 8-second period, strong 25 mph cross-offshore wind. Clean but way too big for most, and short-period makes it crumbly.
Then Monday 31st through Wednesday 2nd September stay oversized (13.1 ft to 7.2 ft) with fresh cross-shore winds and lumpy chop — not worth it. Energy readings are strong, but the conditions aren’t friendly.
Thursday 3rd September morning is another massive pulse: 14.8 ft from the WSW, 14-second period, huge energy, but cross-shore wind and still too big. Only for experts who don’t mind a beating.
Friday 4th onward drops into marginal or poor territory, with 9.8 ft and cross-on winds, then Saturday 5th afternoon has 9.8 ft onshore from the north — messy.
Sunday 6th afternoon sees 13.1 ft from the west, 11-second period, cross-shore wind, but the energy’s still strong — still too big for the break.
And Monday 7th September is the final big one: 18.0 ft WSW swell, 14-second period, massive energy — huge, but cross-onshore wind and onshore later. Expert only, and lumpy.
So to be honest, the only real standout for me is Monday 24th August morning — big, clean, and powerful, but it’s a big-wave day. For the rest of us, there’s a lot of waiting through gaps of marginal or too-big surf. Crowds at Weld Road are “sometimes,” so if you do paddle out on a rare clean day, you might have it quiet. But for paddling, not much to get excited about until we see if forecasts shift.
Stay safe out there.
