The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Weld Road in feet and knots, the way it should sound.
The water’s sitting at about 59°F, just a fraction warmer than normal for this time of year. A slow start, but the juice is coming.
First real look is Sunday morning, July 19th. The swell hits 12 feet from the WSW, with a 16-second period – that’s deep ocean energy, proper groundswell. The wind is a clean cross-offshore from the SW, so the faces will be smooth. At 12 feet, it’s a heavy wave. This is for the experienced crew only. The reef should handle that long period well. Sunday afternoon drops to 8 feet, same wind quality, same period, still a powerful wave.
Monday the 20th is a beauty. Morning sees a 7-foot WSW swell with a 14-second period and a glassy, near-calm breeze from the east. The afternoon is offshore from the SSE, so again, clean. Not the biggest, but really clean and fun.
After that, it gets a bit grotty. The real standout, the one to talk about, is Sunday morning, July 26th. One week out, so keep tabs. The charts show a massive 15-foot swell from the WSW with a 15-second period, and the wind is glassy – dead flat. The energy is pumping. This is a monster. Experts only, no question.
Then Wednesday morning, July 29th – another big one. 13 feet from the WSW with an 18-second period, the longest in the whole forecast. And again, glassy conditions. That’s a dream setup for the reef, but only if you’re ready for it.
So, the best bets: Sunday the 19th morning for the first big, clean groundswell, and Sunday the 26th morning for the even bigger, glassy groundswell. Both are for experienced surfers. The rest of the window is either smaller, wind-affected, or too big and blown out.
Rusty.
