The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, let's have a look at what’s coming our way at Weld Road.
The next week is a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s some real gold hidden in there if you're patient. We’ve got a solid swell pulse hitting, but the wind is going to be a pain for most of the first few days. The real standout window opens up from Sunday morning, July 19th, and carries through into early next week.
For Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, it’s all a bit of a mess. We’re looking at a big 10 ft WSW groundswell (3905 combined energy), but with a moderate cross or cross-onshore breeze, the surface is going to be choppy and bumpy. It’s not worth paddling out for unless you’re desperate for a workout.
Things finally clean up proper on Sunday the 19th. The wind swings around to a light offshore from the SSE in the morning, and then goes glassy in the afternoon. The swell drops a touch to 8 ft in the morning but has incredible shape with a 16-second period, and then bumps back up to a clean 10 ft in the afternoon with the same long period (4152 combined energy). This is your best day by far – solid, powerful WSW groundswell, clean conditions, and that reef at Weld Road will be handling it beautifully. The water temperature is sitting at 59°F, which is about average for this time of year, so a good hood and booties are still the go.
Monday the 20th keeps the quality going. It’s glassy again in the morning with a 7 ft swell (2001 combined energy) and that same long-period energy. The morning session will be fantastic. The afternoon sees the wind shift and the quality drops off a bit.
Tuesday the 21st is another good one. Light offshore wind in the morning with a 6 ft swell, and clean surf all day. The swell is winding down, but the conditions are so good it’s still very worth a paddle. The afternoon gets a cross-offshore wind, keeping things clean.
After that, the swell drops out. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd have smaller waves, with the best chance being a glassy Thursday morning on a small 4 ft swell. It’s rideable but not worth writing home about.
There’s a gap in the quality from Friday the 24th through to the end of the week. Onshore winds and messy conditions blow through until we get a massive jump in size later.
Now, looking way ahead to the end of the month, things get interesting again but only for the brave. Saturday the 25th of July sees a huge 10 ft to 13 ft WSW groundswell rolling in, with a massive 10816 combined energy on Saturday afternoon. The wind is cross-offshore and the wave period is a very long 17 seconds. This is expert-only territory. The reef will be handling it, but at this size, you need to know exactly what you’re doing. Sunday the 26th is even bigger wind-wise, with a 25 mph cross-offshore breeze and an 12 ft swell. The conditions will be clean, but it’s intimidating. The combined energy is still extremely high at 6172. If you’re not a seasoned pro at Weld Road, stay on the beach and watch.
Beyond that, the swell drops back down and the winds become unreliable again with some onshore and cross-onshore mornings through the end of July.
So to sum it up: Sunday, July 19th is your absolute standout. Morning offshore or afternoon glassy, with a solid 8 ft to 10 ft swell from the WSW (groundswell) and perfect conditions. Monday the 20th morning is also a great call.
Stay patient, and you’ll be rewarded.
