The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s shaping up at Weld Road. This is a reef break, and it’s a fairly consistent spot that opens up to a solid SW swell. The water temperature is sitting at 57°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual to worry about on that front.
The first real action kicks off Wednesday morning, August 19th. We’ve got a clean 7ft swell pushing in from the WSW, with a long 12-second period and a gentle offshore breeze from the SE. The energy is pumping hard with a reading of 2551, so you’ll feel the power. This is proper surf, but at 7ft, it’s getting into that intermediate-to-expert territory. Wednesday afternoon builds on that, jumping to 8ft from the WSW with a very long 16-second period and a moderate offshore wind from the SSE. The energy jumps up to 3800. This is a standout window – clean, powerful, and that long period will wrap nicely around the reef. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Thursday the 20th turns a bit messy. Morning sees a cross-shore wind from the W with 3 mph, and the swell drops to 7ft from the SW. The energy is still there at 1883, but the wind is cross, so it’s not going to be as clean. By the afternoon, the wind picks up to 12 mph from the WSW, cross-shore, and the swell drops to 7ft with a 14-second period. The energy is still moderate at 1622, but the cross-chop will make it less inviting. Friday the 21st is a write-off with cross-onshore winds and dropping swell, and by Saturday the 22nd, the swell drops below 3ft and the wind is onshore – poor conditions.
Sunday the 23rd sees a bit of a bump with an 8ft W swell, but a strong 16 mph cross-onshore wind makes it choppy and ugly. The period is short at 10 seconds, so not much shape. Monday the 24th is a weird one: the swell is big, 10ft from the WSW with a 16-second period, and the energy is massive at 5242, but the wind is cross-shore at 12 mph. It’s going to be a bumpy, big-wave day – only for the experienced crew, and even then, the wind is a problem. The afternoon gets even bigger at 12ft, but the wind stays cross, so it’s more of a spectacle than a session.
The rest of that week into the next is a mixed bag of onshore winds and dropping swell, with a few days of poor conditions. But hold on – Sunday, August 30th, is worth circling on the calendar. The morning brings a clean 7ft swell from the WSW with a very long 17-second period, energy at 2858, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE. Then Sunday afternoon turns glassy with a 7ft swell and a 16-second period, energy at 3021, and no wind at all. That’s a gem. Monday the 31st keeps it going with a 8ft to 8ft swell from the WSW, 14-second period, glassy or light offshore winds. The energy is strong at 3062 and 2602. This is the best stretch of the whole forecast – clean, lined-up, and powerful.
Into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st holds strong with 10ft swell from the WSW, 12-second period, and clean offshore winds from the SE. The energy is 3036. That’s big, expert-only territory, but it’s clean. Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd keep the clean trend going with solid 7ft to 8ft swell and offshore winds, though the energy drops a bit. By Thursday afternoon, the wind turns cross-onshore, and the quality fades.
Overall, the standout sessions are Wednesday, August 19th, and the stretch from Sunday, August 30th through Tuesday, September 1st. The water is average temp, the reef handles the long-period swell well, and when the wind is right, it’s going to be firing. Just keep an eye on the crowds – Weld Road can get busy when it’s good.
Rusty out.
