The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down the surf at Weld Road.
We kick things off on Tuesday, 18th August. A solid groundswell is rolling in – 2.1m from the WSW with a 14-second period, and light offshore winds keeping it clean. The combined energy is 1638, so there’s plenty of punch. This is a solid session for experienced surfers, but the size is a bit much for beginners. Water temp is about normal for this time of year.
Wednesday, 19th August, is the real standout. The swell builds to 2.4m from the WSW with a 16-second period, and we’ve got gentle offshore winds all day. The energy jumps to 2950, and the waves are lined up and clean. The morning is a bit smaller at 1.9m, but both sessions are excellent for experienced surfers. This is the best on offer in the first week.
Thursday, 20th August, the wind goes cross-shore, making it a bit lumpy. The swell is around 2.0m with 1650 energy. It’s still surfable, but not as clean. Friday, 21st August, is a washout with onshore winds and a messy 1.7m swell. Saturday, 22nd August, is small and choppy. There’s a gap of poor surf from Friday through Sunday.
Sunday, 23rd August, sees the swell jump to 3.0m, but it’s a short-period 9-second wind swell with strong cross-onshore winds. The energy is 1946, but it’s a blown-out mess – better for kitesurfing. Monday, 24th August, is even bigger at 4.5m to 4.0m, but again, strong cross-onshore winds and energy of 8051 make it dangerous and choppy.
Now for the second week’s standout. Tuesday, 25th August, has a massive 4.5m WSW groundswell (15-second period) with clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is 13994, but it’s flagged as too big for this break – expert-only. Wednesday, 26th August, is the real gem. The swell drops to 3.0m, with glassy offshore wind and a 14-second period. The energy is 3364, and the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds 2.5m and clean breeze. This is the second standout.
Thursday, 27th August, stays clean with 3.0m swell and offshore winds, but the period drops to 8-9 seconds. Energy is 2442. Friday, 28th August, has a clean 1.3m long-period swell (12 seconds) with moderate offshore winds, but it’s small. Energy is 997. Saturday, 29th August, is clean but tiny at 0.9m with a 16-second period – long waits between sets.
From Sunday, 30th August, onwards, the swell turns huge and dangerous. 3.5m to 6.0m+ with massive energy readings up to 44133 and mostly cross-shore winds. All are flagged as too big for this break. The period remains long, so it’s best for reefs and points, but the sheer size is overwhelming.
In short, the top two windows are Wednesday, 19th August, and Wednesday, 26th August. Both offer clean, powerful, long-period swell with perfect offshore winds for experienced surfers. Everything else is either too small, too windy, or too big.
Rusty.
