The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at the surf ahead for Weld Road.
We’ve got a solid run of swell on the way, but it kicks off with a bit of a mixed bag. The first real action comes on Tuesday, July 14th, with a clean, glassy morning. The swell is 5 feet from the WNW with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate at 499. The water is 59°, which is about one degree warmer than usual for the time of year—nothing wild, but a touch above average. That morning session is your best bet early on, with light NNE wind making it super clean. The afternoon crashes a bit though, with a smaller 3 feet swell and a cross-on breeze, so don’t expect much.
The standout of the whole outlook is Wednesday, July 15th. Both morning and afternoon are pumping with a solid 12 feet swell from the WSW, long periods of 16-17 seconds, and very strong combined energy (6073-6567). The wind is light and onshore, but the forecast says the swell is simply too big for this break—only for experts, and even then, it’s pushing it. A long period groundswell like this can be tricky at a reef, breaking fast and straight, but if you’re a seasoned charger, it’s worth a look. The wind is light, so it’ll be clean, but the size is the big caveat.
Thursday, July 16th, the swell drops to 10 feet but still long period (15 seconds) and strong energy (4562-6464). The morning is choppy with cross-on wind, but the afternoon turns clean with a cross-off breeze—still big, but more manageable.
Friday, July 17th, starts with a 6 feet swell and clean cross-off wind, but it’s marginal. The afternoon sees another spike to 12 feet from the WSW, with very strong energy (7062) and clean conditions—again, a big-wave day for experts.
Over the weekend, Saturday July 18th holds 7-10 feet swells, but the wind is cross-shore and choppy, so not the best. Sunday July 19th is a real highlight: the afternoon delivers 8 feet from the WSW, a 16-second period, strong energy (3452), and clean offshore wind from the SE. This is excellent for experienced surfers—clean conditions, solid size, and good shape.
Monday July 20th is another gem: morning has 7 feet with offshore wind and clean conditions, and the afternoon drops to 6 feet with glassy, glassy conditions. That afternoon session on Monday is a beauty—smooth, clean, and fun.
The rest of the week from Tuesday July 21st onwards sees the swell slowly easing. Tuesday July 21st has 5-5 feet with glassy or clean conditions, good energy in the moderate range (688-870). Wednesday July 22nd through Friday July 24th are smaller, with 3 feet to 5 feet swells, mostly clean but with cross-off breezes—worth a paddle if you’re keen, but not the standout days.
The following week, around Saturday July 25th and Sunday July 26th, there’s a bit of a pulse again. Saturday afternoon has 4 feet from the SW with a long 16-second period and clean conditions—nice. Sunday July 26th picks up to 6 feet with clean cross-off winds and strong energy (1701) in the afternoon, excellent for experienced surfers.
Monday July 27th has 5 feet swells, but the morning is a bit choppy with cross-shore wind; the afternoon is cleaner. Tuesday July 28th and Wednesday July 29th fade out with poor wind and choppy conditions, so don’t bother.
The best on offer is Wednesday July 15th for the sheer size and energy, but only if you’re an expert. For the everyday surfer, the standout is Sunday July 19th afternoon and Monday July 20th afternoon—clean, solid waves with offshore or glassy conditions. The water is a bit warmer than average, sitting at 59°, so it’s comfortable.
Crowds at Weld Road can be a factor at times, especially on the good days, so get in early on those standouts.
Rusty.
