Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, let’s get into this. We’re looking at a 16-day stretch that starts off pretty grim but builds into some serious power down the line.
First up, the early days. Friday the 3rd through to Sunday the 5th of July are a write-off for any kind of decent surf. The swell that’s coming is from the WSW, but it’s being hammered by strong onshore winds, making everything messy and unrideable.
Now, where it gets interesting is from Monday the 6th of July. The real standout here is Weld Road itself. The combined swell energy ramps up massively, hitting over 5000 on the Monday morning (5330) which is strong to very strong, but the swell size is up around 12 ft from the WSW and the wind is offshore from the SE. However, that size – anything over 8 ft – really rules out everyone except the experts. It’s a powerful, long-period groundswell (13 seconds) so those waves will have real punch, best handled by the experienced crew.
Tuesday the 7th of July is your pick of the whole forecast. The swell is still a thumping 8 ft from the WSW (combined energy 3384), but by Tuesday afternoon the wind goes glassy offshore from the SSE. That’s clean, lined-up, powerful surf for experienced surfers. It’s a reef break here, and with that long-period groundswell (15 seconds), the sets will be fat and have plenty of energy. It’s not a spot for beginners, but for the right surfer, this is the session to circle on the calendar.
Moving into Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th, the swell drops a touch to the 6 – 10 ft range, but the offshore wind sticks around from the SSE. It’s still expert territory when it’s over 8 ft, but Thursday afternoon with 6 ft and clean offshore wind is a very good window for strong intermediates.
A couple of other windows worth noting: Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of July offer 5 – 7 ft swell from the WSW with clean offshore breezes. The energy is still moderate to strong (2216 on Friday morning). It’s a solid run of surf for those who know the break.
The second week, from the 13th onwards, the swell starts to back off. We still get some fun 6 – 6 ft waves on the 12th and 13th, but the wind gets flukey – a little cross-on at times. By the 15th and 16th, the wind turns onshore and it gets messy again. The last glimmer is on Saturday the 18th of July, when the morning goes glassy with a small 3 ft swell from the west. It’s not a big day, but if you just need to get wet and the conditions are that clean, it might be worth a paddle.
Water temperature is sitting at 60°F, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year (anomaly of 2°F). No problems there.
One thing to keep in mind: Weld Road is a reef setup, and it’s *fairly consistent*, but when long-period groundswell like this hits, those waves can jack up fast and break top-to-bottom. Good for a reef, but you need to be confident. The crowds here can show up *sometimes*, so on a Tuesday afternoon with clean 8 ft faces, expect a few of the local lads to be out.
So, short story: first few days are a total dud. Then from July 6th to July 12th, the big offshore swells roll in. Tuesday the 7th afternoon is the standout – big, clean, expert level. The second week fades away to smaller, less reliable conditions.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
