Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what Weld Road has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a proper run of solid, groundswell-driven surf coming our way, starting this very Tuesday, July 7th. The first few days are the real standout, with big, powerful swells and clean, offshore winds setting the stage. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
You’ll want to be on it early. Tuesday morning kicks off with a big 9.8 ft swell from the WSW, with a very long 16-second period giving it heaps of energy. The wind is a light cross-off from the ESE, keeping things clean. Look, this is big, heavy surf, so it's strictly for the experienced crew—beginners stay on the sand. Tuesday afternoon is almost as good with an 8.2 ft SW swell, 15-second period, and a clean offshore SSE breeze. That’s a solid day of surfing.
Wednesday the 8th drops off a touch in size but stays good. Morning has a 5.2 ft SW swell but the wind is a fresh 18.6 mph offshore from the south—makes for a clean, fast wall even if the energy is still strong. The afternoon cleans up with a 4.9 ft swell and moderate offshore wind. Good, fun size.
Thursday the 9th is a big one but with a warning. Morning sees a 9.8 ft WSW swell with a 16-second period and the combined energy pumping through the roof. The wind is a strong offshore from the SSE at 28 mph—this will be clean but near impossible to paddle into. Kite surfers might be having more fun than us on these days. The afternoon is similar, a bit smaller at 8.2 ft but still with a fresh offshore. Heavy, expert-only conditions.
Friday the 10th keeps the trend going. Morning delivers a 7.9 ft WSW swell with an 18-second period, a proper long-period groundswell that will line up beautifully at this reef, even if the moderate offshore wind adds a bit of texture. It’s a standout session for anyone confident in the water. The afternoon is even cleaner with a 7.2 ft SW swell and 16-second period, still in the expert range.
Saturday the 11th eases off. Morning has a 5.2 ft SW swell with a light offshore, making for super clean, user-friendly conditions. The combined energy is moderate, but this is a beautiful, manageable size for a wider range of surfers. The afternoon gets almost glassy with a 4.3 ft swell and an 18-second period—long, clean lines with barely any wind. One of the best windows for the intermediate crew.
Sunday the 12th the winds shift and the quality drops. A 6.6 ft swell is there in the morning, but it’s cross-shore from the ENE, putting some ripples on the face. Afternoon turns more onshore. Still surfable, but you’re chasing the better windows.
From Monday the 13th through Tuesday the 14th, it gets a bit rough. The swell drops below 4.9 ft and the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, making for choppy, lumpy conditions. Nothing to get excited about for a few days.
Then Wednesday the 15th things go huge. Morning has a 13.1 ft swell from the W, and the afternoon hits 16.4 ft from the WSW with a 17-second period and massive energy. That is a massive, dangerous, XXL swell. The reef will be a washing machine—too big for any paddle surfing unless you’re a tow-in specialist. Again, kite or foil might be the only game in town.
Thursday the 16th is more of the same, messy and oversized. The wind is onshore and the swell peaks at 23.0 ft. Stay out of the water unless you’ve got a jet ski.
Friday the 17th is a weird one. You’ve got a 19.7 ft and 18.0 ft swell, but the wind is offshore from the SE. The combined energy is astronomical. The forecast says it’s too big for the break, but it will be clean. Only for the absolute elite, and even then, you’re on a knife’s edge.
Saturday the 18th brings it back down to a manageable 9.8 ft WSW swell in the morning, with a light offshore from the SSE. Clean and powerful, but still a big wave for experts. The afternoon drops to 8.2 ft with a cross-off, still decent.
Sunday the 19th is a real treat. Morning has a 5.6 ft SW swell with a light offshore from the SE. Afternoon goes glassy—absolutely no wind—with a 4.9 ft SW swell. This is the session
