The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Well, it's a slow start, I gotta be honest. There's nothing worth paddling out for right now. We're looking at a gap of a few days here with no real surf on offer. The first sniff of anything decent doesn't come until next week.
The first real action to get excited about kicks off on Monday, the 26th of August, at Weld Road. It's a reef setup, fairly consistent, and it's exposed to the swell. The water is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much what you'd expect for this time of year. The real story here is the size. We're looking at a solid 16ft swell from the WSW with a very long period of 15 seconds. That's a serious groundswell. The combined energy is massive, clocking in at 11,778. But here's the deal – this is a lot of water. Over 8ft puts it firmly in the expert zone. The wind is a cross-shore, which will keep it reasonably clean, but this is not a day for the faint-hearted. This swell is too big for the break, so unless you're charging and know the reef, sit this one out.
The big stuff hangs around for a few days. Tuesday the 27th is still pumping with 12ft to 15ft swell from the same WSW direction and that long 15-second period. Energy is still off the charts. The wind is a cross-shore, keeping it manageable, but again, it's big. Wednesday the 28th is the real standout for the brave. We've got an 18ft WSW swell with a period of 13 seconds, and the forecast is calling for glassy conditions on Thursday morning, the 3rd of September. The combined energy is a staggering 14,053. That's a lot of power. The wind is light, with a glassy morning, so it will look incredible. But don't be fooled – 18ft is serious, serious swell. This is a day for experienced surfers only. The reef will be handling that long-period energy, but it's going to be a beast.
Now, if you're looking for something a bit more manageable, we start to see a drop. Friday the 5th of September has some potential. The swell drops to 7ft from the WSW with a 14-second period. The wind is a clean cross-offshore, and the morning session is rated as excellent for experienced surfers. The energy is still a solid 1,804, so there's plenty of push. That's your best bet for a proper session without being completely out of your depth.
Then, on Sunday the 7th of September, we get a real treat. The swell is 10ft from the WSW with a 14-second period, but the wind is blowing offshore from the SE. The combined energy is 3,659, and it's rated as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the one to circle. The offshore wind will make Weld Road absolutely clean, and that reef will be working perfectly. If you're experienced, this is your window.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a write-off, then we get a massive pulse that's too big for most. The standout for the true charger is the glassy 18ft day on the 3rd of September. The best all-round session for an experienced surfer who wants clean, powerful waves without the full-on charge is the Sunday morning, the 7th of September, with that offshore wind.
Rusty out.
