The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Fitzroy Beach. It’s a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks – some beautiful, clean waves early, then a long spell of nasty wind and slop, with a chance of something good right at the end.
Water temp is sitting around 57°F, which is right on the money for this time of year. No surprises there.
We start on Monday the 17th of August. Small but clean – a 4ft swell out of the WSW with a 15-second period. Light cross-off breeze keeps the surface tidy. The combined swell energy is strong at 1094, so there’s more push than the height suggests. A fun little afternoon session.
The real highlight is Tuesday morning the 18th of August. A 5ft WSW swell, 14-second period, light cross-off wind, and glassy conditions. Energy is solid at 866. This is your window – clean lines, no stress, just good waves. Get out early.
Wednesday the 19th keeps the quality up. Morning has a 5ft swell with a light cross-off, clean and inviting. Then Wednesday afternoon is a beauty – a 4ft swell but with a very long 16-second period, straight offshore wind, and glassy water. Energy is strong at 1149. Long period means patience between sets, but the shape and power are worth it.
Thursday the 20th is another standout. A 5ft WSW swell, 14-second period, and glassy wind – total flat calm. Energy is moderate at 996. As clean as it gets for a beach break.
Then it all turns to rubbish. From Thursday afternoon, the wind swings onshore or cross-on and stays that way for days. Friday the 21st through Monday the 24th is a write-off – strong wind, lumpy seas, rain, and poor surf. Sunday the 23rd sees the swell hit 8ft to 12ft but with a short, messy 8-second period and howling onshore wind. That’s kite-surfing territory.
The 25th and 26th of August still have size – 12ft to 8ft – but the wind is cross or cross-on, and the surface is choppy and lumpy. Energy readings are huge (4851 and 2849) but the quality is gone for a paddle.
After nearly a week of junk, we get a breather on Thursday the 27th of August. A 5ft WSW swell, light cross-off breeze, and clean conditions. A nice reset but nothing special.
Then Friday the 28th of August in the afternoon throws a curveball. A 7ft swell from the NNW with a short 7-second period – so it’ll be a bit soft – but the wind is glassy. Energy is moderate at 756. The glassy surface will make it look good, even if the power is low.
Looking into September, Saturday the 29th has a 10ft WNW swell with 10-second period and cross wind – not great. But Tuesday the 1st of September is promising. Morning shows an 8ft WSW swell, 10-second period, and offshore breeze. Energy is strong at 2351. That’s a big, clean, powerful wave for experienced surfers – a real standout at the tail end of the forecast. Tuesday afternoon stays solid at 8ft with an 11-second period and offshore wind, though a bit breezier at 15 mph.
To keep it simple: the first few days are your best bet – Tuesday the 18th and Thursday the 20th are the clear winners. Expect a long blank stretch from late Thursday the 20th through to around Wednesday the 26th. The end of August and start of September has some promise, but it’s a way off, so don’t bank on it just yet.
Rusty.
