The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks. We've got a big, powerful stretch of swell coming through, but the wind and size are going to be the main talking points, especially at Fitzroy Beach.
First up, there's nothing doing right now. The water's sitting at a pretty normal 57°F for this time of year, but the waves are a messy 2ft on a long 13-second period from the WSW, and that NW wind is just ruining it. We've got a few days of flat or poor conditions before the real action kicks off.
Sunday the 23rd is when things get interesting, but not for the faint-hearted. The swell is already 12ft, and it's going to keep building. The WSW wind is cross-shore, so the sets will have some shape, but that wave energy is absolutely pumping – we're talking a combined energy of 2869 on Sunday afternoon. This is big, powerful stuff. The period is a moderate 10 seconds, so it's a bit of a storm swell. For experienced surfers only, this is a serious proposition, but for most of us, it's a day to watch.
Monday the 24th is the peak of this first pulse. The swell hits 13ft on Monday morning with a very long 15-second period from the WSW. The energy reading is a massive 7278 – that's a freight train of water. The wind is a clean offshore WSW, so the waves will be holding up beautifully. However, this is well into the "experts only" zone. The sheer size and power, combined with the long period, will make it dumpy and heavy, especially on a beach break. It's a stunning spectacle, but a paddle-out mission only for the brave.
The rest of that week is a write-off, I'm sorry to say. The swell hangs around the 5ft to 8ft mark, but the wind shifts onshore or cross-onshore, turning it into a choppy, bumpy mess. We get a bit of a reprieve on the 27th with a drop in size to 5ft, but it's still cross-onshore. We've got a blank run of poor or marginal surf until the start of September.
Now, let's talk about the standout. Keep your eyes peeled on Thursday, September the 4th. We get a solid 10ft groundswell from the WSW with a long 15-second period, but this time the wind is a clean, gentle offshore breeze from the SE. The combined energy is a very healthy 3436. This is the one. It's big enough to be thrilling but clean enough to be rideable for strong intermediates and experts. The crowd factor is "often" at Fitzroy, so expect some company, but for good reason. This is the best window on the cards.
Before that, on the 3rd, we've got a smaller 8ft swell but with strong offshore winds, making it clean but tricky to get into. The 5th sees another pulse of size, with 16ft on Saturday afternoon, but the wind is light and onshore, which will mush it up a bit. That 13ft on the Saturday morning with a clean offshore cross-off breeze from the east is another serious option for the pros.
So, the summary is: a huge, windy start, a mid-week lull, and then a cracking window around Thursday the 4th of September. That's the one to circle on the calendar. For the rest, it's either too big or too blown out.
Rusty.
