The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s break down the surf at Fitzroy Beach.
The next couple of days are the highlight, with clean lines and good energy. Water temp is about 57°, right where it should be for the season, nothing unusual.
Tuesday the 18th morning sets the tone: a light cross-off breeze, waves around 5ft from the WSW, period 14 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 866. The afternoon holds with waves at 6ft and a 13-second period, still clean.
Wednesday the 19th is even better. Morning has a gentle offshore from the SSE, waves at 5ft from the WSW, period 11 seconds, energy jumps to 1052 (strong). By afternoon, the period stretches to 16 seconds, waves at 4ft, energy at 1141 (strong). That’s a sweet groundswell, clean and lined up.
Thursday the 20th morning is glassy with zero wind, waves at 5ft from the WSW, 14-second period, energy at 996 (moderate). That’s as clean as it gets. But the afternoon goes choppy with a cross-onshore, so get out early.
From Thursday afternoon through the weekend, the wind turns onshore, and things get lumpy. Sunday the 23rd sees big waves – 8ft to 10ft – but a fresh cross-onshore makes it messy. Energy is strong at 1461 and 1920. With that wind, it’s more for kite surfing.
Monday the 24th is the biggest, with 10ft sets from the WSW, period up to 16 seconds, energy spiking to 5036 (very strong). Still, the cross-onshore wind keeps it from being clean.
After that, it’s a long stretch of poor to marginal conditions. A few mornings look glassy, like Friday the 28th morning, with 5ft waves at 12 seconds and calm wind, but energy is down to 625 (moderate). It’s clean, but not the main event.
The last few days see the wind return onshore, finishing sloppy on the 2nd of September. There’s a brief window on Sunday the 30th with offshore wind, but waves are under 3ft, so it’s a small wave day.
Best bet: Tuesday the 18th through Thursday the 20th morning. Grab that Thursday morning glass for the best ride.
Rusty.
