The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – this next couple of weeks is a bit of a mixed bag. We’ve got some real potential early on and then a long, quiet spell, before a little kick at the tail end. Let’s walk through it.
We’re looking at Fitzroy Beach first. It’s a fairly exposed spot that handles a west swell well. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about 2° warmer than normal for this time of year – nice little bonus, won’t need the super thick suit just yet.
The action kicks off on Tuesday, July 14th. Tuesday morning is looking like the standout of the whole period. We’ve got a clean 6ft NW swell pushing in with an 8-second period. It’s not the longest period, but the wind is glassy – dead calm from the NE at just 3 mph. That’s a major positive; it’ll be perfect, smooth conditions. The combined wave energy is moderate at 597, so there’s some push, but it’s not overwhelming. This is the best on offer for the whole run. Tuesday afternoon sees the wind swing onshore from the NW at 9 mph, which will chop it up, so get out there in the morning.
Wednesday, July 15th, is bigger but trickier. The morning brings an 8ft W groundswell with a juicy 17-second period – that’s a long period groundswell. A lot of energy there (4012, strong). But the wind is a light cross-onshore from the NNW. For a beach break, that long period might make it break a bit too straight, so you’ll want to be looking for a peak that’s not too walled. It’s more of a marginal call. Wednesday afternoon is even bigger at 10ft (4239, very strong) with onshore wind – that’s expert territory and not clean.
Thursday, July 16th, through Saturday, July 19th morning, things get messy with onshore and cross-shore winds and some rain. Swell stays solid but the quality drops right off. However, then we hit Sunday, July 19th afternoon. This is the second real highlight. We’ve got a clean 6ft WSW swell packing a 16-second period, and the wind is offshore from the SE at 12 mph. That’s moderate offshore, making for clean, lined-up waves. This is excellent for experienced surfers.
Monday, July 20th, is a nice little reward. Morning has a 5ft WSW swell with a light offshore breeze, and by the afternoon it drops to 5ft with glassy conditions. That’s a very good couple of sessions. Tuesday, July 21st, continues with clean, glassy, smaller waves around 3ft to 4ft.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Wednesday, July 22nd, right through to Saturday, July 26th morning, the swell drops off dramatically. We’re looking at waves under 3ft for the bulk of that time. The wind is often offshore or cross-offshore, but there’s just no energy. The combined energy readings are all under 400 for many of those days, which is weak. It’s a long gap of small, unexciting surf.
Finally, Sunday, July 26th, things start to perk up again. Both morning and afternoon show a 4ft WSW swell with a 14-second period and offshore winds. The energy is back to moderate (over 600). Monday, July 27th, also offers clean, glassy 4ft waves. That’s a decent finish to the outlook, but nothing compared to that first Tuesday.
After that, the last couple of days (July 28th and 29th) look poor again with strong winds and choppy conditions.
So, the clear winner is Tuesday, July 14th morning at Fitzroy Beach – glassy, clean, and a solid 6ft swell. The backup is Sunday, July 19th afternoon, with a clean offshore and a long-period groundswell.
Rusty.
