The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. I’m lookin’ at the next couple of weeks here and to be honest, it’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real gems tucked away if you’re patient. The main action is all at Fitzroy Beach, and the pattern goes from clean and solid to a bit of a messy stretch, then finishes off with what looks like the real deal.

We kick things off on Wednesday the 19th of August with a clean start – morning glass at 5 ft from the WSW with a gentle offshore breeze. The water temp is sitting at 57°, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, no big anomaly there. The energy in the water is solid, around 1107 (moderate to strong), and that 11-second period is giving the waves some proper shape. It’s a decent morning, but the afternoon drops off a little with a cross-off breeze, so the morning is the window.

Thursday the 20th is where it gets interesting. Zero wind in the morning, dead glassy conditions, and a 5 ft WSW swell at 14 seconds period. The energy drops a little to 996, but the clean face is a major win. This is a good setup for intermediates – not too big, not too small. The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-on wind, so get out early.

Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are best left alone. Onshore winds, choppy conditions, and the swell drops off real quick. Saturday morning is barely 3 ft, not worth paddling out.

Sunday the 23rd sees a bump in size, 8 ft from the W, but the period drops to 9 seconds and the wind is howling cross-on at 16 mph. That’s a choppy, blown-out mess. Not for the casual surfer. The energy is high at 1375, but it’s all wind chop.

Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are bigger – up to 8 ft – but again, cross-on winds and that energy is through the roof (2693 at one point). For a beach break, that’s gonna be a washing machine. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle boarding. The period jumps to 15-16 seconds though, so there’s groundswell in there, but the wind ruins it.

Now, hang in there. The end of the month is where we score. Saturday the 29th of August – glassy again, 7 ft from the W, but a short 8-second period. It’s clean, but a bit fat and sectiony. A morning surf could still be fun if you’re not picky.

But Sunday the 30th of August is the standout. Morning session: 5 ft from the WSW, a very long 17-second period, and light offshore wind from the ESE (3 mph). Clean lines, energy reading 1833, and that period means real groundswell, proper waves. This is a setup that loves a point or reef, but at Fitzroy (a beach break) it might be a bit too straight. Still, for experienced surfers, this is the pick of the whole window.

Monday the 31st of August keeps it going – 5 ft, 15-second period, clean cross-off wind in the morning, and then glassy in the afternoon with 6 ft. Energy is 1606–1762. Another solid day, especially the afternoon if the tide works.

Tuesday the 1st of September is a big one for the crew who like it solid. 8 ft from the WSW, 12-second period, clean offshore wind from the SE. That’s a powerful, clean swell. It’s pushing into expert territory at that size, but the wind is perfect. Energy is 1909. If you’ve got the skills, this is the session to circle.

Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd of September ease off a bit, 7 ft down to 4 ft, but still clean offshore winds. Those mornings are dependable, fun, and less crowded.

To wrap it up: the first few days are okay, the middle week is a write-off for surf quality, but the last five days from the 29th of August through the 3rd of September are the real deal. The standout is Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st of August, with clean, long-period groundswell and glassy to offshore winds. Get out there.

Rusty.
