The Lowdown
Right, mate, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way.
We’ve got a mixed bag on the cards for Fitzroy Beach. The first couple of days are a bit of a write-off, with moderate cross-shore winds and a lumpy sea state. The real standout starts to shape up from the morning of Sunday, 19 July. That’s where the magic happens. The swell is a solid 5 feet, pushing in from the WSW with a very long period of 16 seconds, giving the waves some serious grunt and shape. The wind is a light offshore breeze, making for clean conditions. The combined wave energy is substantial (1852), so you’ll feel the power. This is the pick of the period for the experienced surfer – the 5 feet is just right for a good session, and that long period groundswell will line up nicely on the point. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The following Monday morning, 20 July, is another treat. The swell drops back slightly to 6 feet, but the wind goes glassy from the ENE, with just a slight air moving. The wave energy is still moderate (1227), and the waves will be clean and smooth. It’s a great option for a more relaxed paddle.
Towards the end of the month, on Saturday, 25 July, there’s a significant pulse of swell coming in at 8 feet, but it’s a short-period windswell (9 seconds) and the wind goes onshore, so expect messy conditions. This one is more for the experts and even then, it’s not ideal. The real monster swell hits on Thursday, 31 July, with a huge 12 feet from the west and a 13-second period. The wave energy is massive (4037), but the wind is cross-shore and the swell is too big for most at this break – it’s a warning for the experienced only. The final day, 1 August, sees the same 12 feet swell, but with glassy conditions from the east, making it a very tempting but dangerous proposition for the brave.
Between the 23rd and 24th of July, there’s a gap with poor conditions and strong onshore winds. The swell is small and the wind is against you, so it’s a good time to check the wax and stay on the beach.
Rusty.
