The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s comin’ our way down at Fitzroy Beach. Gotta be honest with ya, the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag, and it’s gonna take some patience to find the windows.
The story starts with a whole lot of nothin’ good. The first few days are plagued by messy cross-on winds and choppy conditions. That southwest groundswell is present, with moderate energy readings (799 on Thursday the 20th, 595 on Friday morning), but the quality just isn’t there for a decent paddle. Water temp’s sittin’ at about 57.2°, which is pretty average for the time of year, so no need to worry about a freak chill.
The low point hits on the 23rd of August. A big, raw westerly swell rolls in with the wind howling, but it’s just poor. The energy jumps up strong (2465 on Sunday morning), but it’s a messy, onshore mess. Kite surfers might be having a field day, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a hard pass.
Now, we get a glimmer on Monday the 24th. The swell is massive—13.1ft of WSW groundswell with a super long 16-second period—and the wave energy is pumping at a hefty 7773. The wind is cross-shore, but the data is clear: this one is too big for the break at Fitzroy. It’s an expert-only proposition at best, and even then, the size is likely to close it out.
The following days settle down a touch, with moderate southwesterly swell in the 5.9ft to 8.2ft range, but it’s consistently plagued by cross-on winds and a fair bit of chop. It stays marginal right through until the end of August.
Looking ahead to the start of September, things get a little more interesting. Tuesday the 1st of September sees a drop in size to 2.0ft, but we finally get some glassy conditions in the morning and clean, cross-off winds in the afternoon. The energy is weak (202 in the AM, 180 in the PM), but you might snag a tiny, clean one on a longboard. Not a standout, but a sign of life.
The real standout of the whole outlook, and the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Wednesday the 2nd of September. We’ve got a clean 4.9ft wave with a moderate offshore wind (16 mph from the SSE). The energy is moderate (646), but the description says it all: “expect good surf conditions.” That is the day to be in the water. It’s not huge, but it’s clean, and that’s gold.
After that, the swell gets wild again on the 3rd and 4th of September. Thursday the 3rd sees a massive 13.1ft to 14.8ft groundswell from the WNW, with very strong energy (up to 3745). The winds are light to clean, but just like before, it’s too big for Fitzroy. Not the one for the average surfer. Friday the 4th is similar, with 11.5ft swells and glassy conditions, but again, it’s an expert-only size.
So, if you want my honest take: the best bet for a proper surf is Wednesday the 2nd of September. That clean, offshore session is your standout. For a small, clean wave to get your fix on a log, Tuesday the 1st of September is your backup. The rest is either too messy, too big, or too inconsistent to get excited about.
Stay patient, and stay wet.
