The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s cookin’ at the Waipaoa River (sandbar). This is an advanced, inconsistent spot that needs the right combo to fire, and it’s exposed to the swell. The water is sitting at 56°F, which is about 2°F colder than normal for this time of year – a bit nippy, so you’ll want that extra rubber.
The first few days are a write-off. Wednesday the 15th and Thursday the 16th are tiny and weak, with combined energy barely reaching 49 and 182 (weak to low-moderate energy). There’s just no power. You’re looking at a couple of days of nothing worth paddling out for.
Now, things get interesting from Friday morning, July 17th. The swell jumps to 5 ft from the ESE with a very long period of 16 seconds, and the energy is pumping at 1064 (strong). That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is a light cross-off from the WNW, so the river mouth setup should be clean. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, but keep in mind that long period stuff like this can break a bit straight on a sandbar – it’s better if the river has a defined channel. Friday afternoon gets even better: 5 ft of swell, glassy conditions with a light SE wind, and the energy hitting 1350 (strong). If you’re an advanced surfer, this is the standout of the whole run. Crowds are listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few friends out, but it’s worth it.
Saturday the 18th morning holds solid 4 ft ESE swell with 14-second period and 895 energy (moderate-strong). Light cross-off wind keeps it clean. The afternoon turns a bit marginal with a cross-onshore breeze, so the morning is your window.
Sunday the 19th is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell is 5 ft from the SSE, with a very long 19-second period and massive energy at 1717 (strong). But the wind is a moderate SSW breeze, so it’s cross-off but breezy – still clean, but the conditions are described as marginal. That’s a lot of power for a sandbar, and it could be a bit of a handful.
Monday morning, July 20th is another standout. The swell is 4 ft from the SSE, 16-second period, 1062 energy (strong), and the wind is offshore from the W. That’s as good as it gets for an advanced sandbar session. Clean, powerful, and lined up.
Tuesday the 21st morning still has 4 ft of SSE swell and clean conditions, but the energy drops to 640 (moderate). The afternoon gets a bit messy with onshore wind.
From Wednesday the 22nd onward, the swell fades fast. We’re dropping to 2 ft, then 1 ft, and the energy is weak (43 to 119). The long-range stuff around the 26th to the 30th shows a few 2 ft to 3 ft pulses, but it’s all ordinary or poor conditions. There’s a gap of several days with no real recommendations.
Best bet: Friday July 17th afternoon, and Monday July 20th morning. 5 ft to 5 ft of clean, long-period groundswell with light wind. That’s the gold. For the following week, it’s a waiting game – forecasts can change, but right now it looks flat.
Rusty.
