The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Midway Beach.
First up, the water is sitting at 56°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3° cooler than usual. A bit of a wetsuit adjustment if you’re used to the average.
The standout for the whole forecast is hands down Sunday the 19th morning. The swell is a solid 5ft from the SSE, with a super long period of 18 seconds giving it some serious groundswell energy. The combined energy is a massive 1798, which is strong. Wind is light WNW at 3 mph, cross-off, so the surf will be clean and well-shaped. This is a proper long-period swell, so it’s best suited to the points and reefs rather than the beach break, but the conditions are excellent for experienced surfers. It’s going to be a good one.
Crowds are possible here, so get in early. The swell direction is SSE, which is exactly what this spot likes.
The surf then drops off quickly. By Monday the 20th, it’s marginal with onshore winds. The waves are there but the quality is poor. Tuesday the 21st is a bit better in the morning with 5ft and a 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on from the SSW, making it choppy. The energy is still moderate at 1405, but the onshore wind spoils it.
There’s a quiet spell from Wednesday the 22nd through to Friday the 24th, with small waves and poor conditions. The swell drops to below 2ft, and the energy is weak. Friday the 24th has a clean offshore wind, but the swell is too small to get excited about. This gap of poor surf lasts for a few days.
The next real highlight is Thursday the 30th of July afternoon. The swell jumps to 12ft from the S, with a combined energy of 5354 – that’s very strong. But the wind is cross-on from the SSW at 16 mph, making it messy. This is big, powerful, and choppy. For experts only, and even then, it’s not clean. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The best of the second week is Friday the 31st of July morning. The swell is 7ft from the SSE, with a 13-second period and a combined energy of 1416. The wind is light NW at 6 mph, cross-off, so the surf will be clean. This is a good option for experienced surfers, with solid, well-shaped waves. The afternoon is also good at 6ft and clean.
After that, it fades out again. The first few days of August are small and ordinary, with waves under 3ft. There’s a little bump on Monday the 3rd of August morning with 5ft from the SSE and a gentle offshore wind, but it’s not a standout.
So, to sum it up: the best windows are Sunday the 19th morning and Friday the 31st morning. The first is a long-period groundswell gem, the second is a solid, clean swell. In between, expect a lot of small, onshore, or messy days.
Rusty.
