The Lowdown
Alright, check it out. It’s Rusty here. We’ve got a 16-day window for the Gizzy-Pipe region, and it’s a bit of a slow burner. The water’s sitting at 55° Fahrenheit, which is about two and a half degrees colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the thickest rubber you’ve got.
The opening stretch is pretty gutless. Saturday the 22nd has a clean little 3ft SSW groundswell with a 12-second period on the morning, and it’s glassy. It’s surfable, but it’s not going to get anyone too excited. The energy reading is weak at 264. We’ll take it for what it is. After that, Sunday drops right off, and the next few days are pretty average. Monday the 24th is small, and the afternoon gets a bit of a cross-shore bump.
The first real sign of life comes mid-week. Thursday the 27th morning is where it starts to wake up. We’ve got 4ft of SSE groundswell pushing in with a solid 16-second period, and the energy is jumping up to 739. Morning winds are light offshore from the NW, so it should be clean. This is the kind of day that gets you out of bed early. Friday the 28th is the standout. The swell is holding at 4ft from the SSE, but the period is still a meaty 16 seconds, and the energy is cranking at 1039 – that’s some serious push. Morning offshore winds from the NW keep it glassy. This is the pick of the first week. It’s a proper groundswell, and with that long period, it should line up nicely on the bank.
Then we hit a bit of a flat spot from the 29th through to the 31st. The swell drops off hard, getting down to 1ft, and the winds get messy. We’re looking at a few days with nothing to offer. Just a waiting game.
The forecast for the following week gets a bit more promising, but we’re in long-range territory now, so don’t book the time off just yet. Tuesday the 1st of September is showing some potential with 4ft of SSE swell and a 17-second period, and the energy is back up to 770. The morning winds are off from the NW, so it could be clean. It’s promising.
The next real highlight is further out. Thursday the 3rd looks okay, but the wind is wrong. The best bet in the second week is Friday the 4th of September. The swell is back up to 4ft from the SSE with a shorter 9-second period, but the morning is looking at light offshore winds. It’s a promising call, but it’s a long way out, so treat it with some caution. The energy is moderate at 215, so it’s not the same power as the first week’s swell.
So, to sum it up: if you want waves, your best bets are the mornings of Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th of August. The 28th is the one with the most grunt. After that, be patient for the first week of September, with the 1st and 4th showing some potential, but they're not guaranteed.
This is Rusty, signing off.
