G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the lowdown on the local surf scene for the next couple of weeks. Let's start with the big picture: we've got a solid run of clean, fun-sized swell kicking off this weekend and rolling through the start of the week. The water's a touch colder than usual for this time of year, coming in at 56°F, so a bit of a chill in the air and the ocean. The stand-out window is this Saturday and Sunday morning, with clean lines and manageable waves.
Right then, let's dive into the details. The action kicks off Saturday morning, July 4th, at Midway Beach - Gizzy Pipe. We're looking at a nice 4ft easterly swell, period around 12 seconds – that's a nice groundswell with some grunt to it. The wind is a light offshore from the NNW, so the faces should be clean and tidy. The combined swell energy is moderate at 453, and for a beginner-friendly break that's consistent, this is a perfect time to get among it. Saturday afternoon stays clean, slightly smaller at 4ft with a cross-offshore breeze.
Into Sunday morning, July 5th, and it's more of the same goodness. A clean 4ft easterly swell with a light offshore wind. The energy drops a touch to 335, but for a fun, cruisey session, it's spot on. Sunday afternoon sees a little cloud move in, but the 3ft swell with a light cross-offshore breeze is still very much surfable.
Monday morning, July 6th, brings some light rain, but the offshore wind holds, with a 4ft easterly swell, period around 9 seconds. The energy is 288. The real treat for Monday is the afternoon: the wind goes completely glassy at 0 mph, with a 4ft swell at 10 seconds. That's pure magic for the beach break. Tuesday morning, July 7th, is another glassy gem, with a 4ft easterly swell and 3 mph NW wind. Unreal conditions for a midweek paddle.
Now, things get a little messy from Tuesday afternoon through to the following Monday. The swell builds, but the wind turns onshore or cross-onshore, and the conditions get choppy and lumpy. By Friday, July 10th, the swell hits 8ft to 10ft with fresh onshore winds and combined energy jumping into the thousands – that's serious power, but the quality is gone for a paddle surfer. If you're into kite surfing, the strong onshore breeze and sizeable swell might be your jam, but for a surfboard, it's a no-go.
The next standout window arrives on Tuesday morning, July 14th. After a run of poor conditions, we wake to a glassy morning with a 6ft ESE swell and a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is a solid 730, and with zero wind, it's going to be clean. The "Cloudy" skies set a moody scene. Tuesday afternoon holds the magic with a glassy 5ft swell.
Wednesday morning, July 15th, is another clean one with a light offshore wind from the NW and a 4ft easterly swell. A nice little reset.
Then, look ahead to Saturday, July 18th. The forecast shows a promising long-range pulse. A solid 6ft ESE groundswell with a long period of 14 seconds, combined with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NW. The combined energy is a hefty 1353. This is one for the experienced crew, as the long period and size will create some powerful, walled-up sections. It's a promising one, but a week and a half out, it's something to keep an eye on rather than bank on.
So, the best waves are this Saturday morning, July 4th, and glassy Monday afternoon, July 6th. The rest of the first week is a mix of clean fun and then a blow-out. The second week offers some glassy windows and a potential standout on the 18th. Conditions can change, but that's the story for now.
Rusty.
