The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the charts for the next stretch, and there’s a real sweet spot brewing for the advanced crew. The main event is a solid run of groundswell with some classic offshore wind setups, but you gotta pick your moments.

The first real chance to get wet is Friday afternoon, July 17th, at Mangamaunu. The swell is a clean 5ft, but it’s coming from the ESE at 16 seconds – that’s some solid long-period energy. The combined energy is pumping at 1469, so there’s plenty of push. But the wind is a light cross from the S, which isn’t perfect. It’s surfable, but a bit marginal.

The standouts start rolling in on Saturday, July 18th. Saturday morning is a beauty – a tidy 4ft from the S with a classic 23-second period, that’s a very long groundswell, and the combined energy is massive at 2503. The wind is pure offshore from the W, glassy clean conditions. This is the good stuff. Saturday afternoon gets even better: the swell jumps to 6ft from the S, still with a 22-second period, and the energy is a whopping 3382. The wind goes glassy, dead calm. This is the best on offer – long, powerful lines for the experienced surfer. The water temp is 52°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.

Sunday morning, July 19th, keeps the run going with another 5ft S swell and a light cross-offshore wind, keeping it clean. The energy is still strong at 1336. After that, the wind gets a little tricky, but Monday, July 20th, is another cracker. Monday morning has a 5ft S swell with glassy conditions, and Monday afternoon sees the swell jump to 7ft from the S, 19 seconds, glassy again, with energy at 3144. That’s expert territory, no doubt about it.

Tuesday, July 21st, hangs in there with a 6ft S swell in the morning and a clean 5ft S swell in the afternoon, both with light winds.

After that, the swell drops off. Wednesday, July 22nd, is a little 3ft from the SSE. The rest of the week and into the following week is small – mostly under 3ft, with onshore winds and some poor conditions. There’s a big gap of nothing special from the 23rd all the way through to the 25th, with strong winds. It’s not looking good for a paddle.

By Sunday, July 26th, a new SSE swell tries to push through, 3ft at 16 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind, but it’s small. That pattern of small, cleanish surf from the SE and SSE, around 3ft to 4ft, continues through the end of the month and into the start of August, but the wind is often cross-offshore or cross. It’s more of a small-wave board situation than a standout.

The real magic is Saturday through Monday, July 18th to 20th. That’s the window.

Remember, Mangamaunu is a powerful point break, not for beginners. When the swell is over 5ft, and especially over 7ft, it’s strictly for the experienced.

Rusty.
