The Lowdown
Alright, crew, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
We're looking at a very interesting run for Mangamaunu, a solid point break that's known for holding its shape. Right now, the water temp is sitting at 51°F, which is pretty much dead average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The next few days are a bit of a mixed bag. Thursday morning (20th August) is actually surfable with 5ft of S swell and glassy conditions, but the energy is weak (326) and the period is short at 8 seconds. It's a paddle, but not a standout. Friday and Saturday are small and a bit messy, with winds shifting around. We're looking at a real lull from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday (23rd–24th) where the swell drops off.
Then things get interesting. Monday morning, the 24th, we see a jump in quality. A solid 5ft S swell with a 14-second period (long period groundswell) and glassy conditions. The combined energy is strong (1095). This is a proper window for experienced surfers. The point will handle that long period nicely, offering up some well-shaped lines. The wind is calm, so it'll be clean.
Tuesday (25th) has some smaller, clean waves with offshore winds, but nothing to write home about. The rest of that week and into the next weekend is all small, inconsistent stuff, with only knee-high waves and weak energy.
But hold on to your board shorts, because the real payoff is coming. Monday, 31st August, we've got a 7ft S swell hitting with a 15-second period (very long period groundswell) and glassy conditions. That's a massive (2069) combined energy reading. This is expert territory, no doubt. The point will be cooking, but it's going to be a serious challenge.
The beginning of September is where it gets truly epic. Tuesday, 1st September, through Wednesday, 2nd September, we are looking at solid 8ft S swell, glassy, with periods around 12 seconds. The energy readings are huge (over 3000 on Tuesday morning). This is world-class, heavy, point surf. Experts only, and it's going to be a long, clean, powerful session. It's a standout run, but it's a long way out, so keep an eye on the forecast.
After that, the swell dips a little into 5ft to 8ft range through the 3rd and 4th of September, but still glassy and clean. It's a fantastic end to the forecast period.
This is a classic case of patience paying off. The first week is a bit of a write-off, but the second week, especially from the 31st onwards, is absolute fire for anyone who can handle it.
Rusty.
