Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Howdy, Rusty here. Let’s talk Mangamaunu. This is an advanced-only, very consistent point break, and when it’s on, it’s a proper paddle. But you gotta know when to go, because the size varies hard.
Water temp is about 53°F, which is just a hair above the long-term average for this time of year – nothing crazy.
First surfable window is Sunday the 5th. Sunday morning shows a 5ft swell from the east, 9-second period, with a light WNW cross-off breeze. Combined energy is 345 – moderate. It’s clean but not big. Sunday afternoon drops to 4ft from the east-northeast, 10-second period, still cross-off. Both are rideable, but nothing to write home about.
Monday the 6th cranks to 6ft on the morning from the south-southwest, but the period is short at 6 seconds – messy, choppy energy. Afternoon sees 7ft, still short period, and cross winds making a cross-chop. Not the one.
Tuesday the 7th is big: 12ft in the morning from the southeast, 9-second period, energy 1967 (strong to very strong). Afternoon holds 10ft from the east, period 10 seconds, energy 3720 (very strong). Both sessions have cross winds and rain. This is expert only, and the conditions are sloppy. Wednesday and Thursday keep things at 8ft to 10ft, with cross-off winds but heavy rain – size is still only for the brave.
Now, the first real standout is Friday the 10th morning. We’ve got a 10ft swell from the east-southeast, period 11 seconds (groundswell), combined energy 2038 (very strong), and a clean cross-off wind from the west-southwest at 12 mph. That’s a big, lined-up swell on a point break – smooth, powerful, for the advanced crew. That’s your best bet in the first week.
Saturday the 11th is smaller – 6ft to 7ft – clean but more relaxed.
But here’s the weekend gem: Sunday the 12th morning. The swell drops to 5ft from the east-southeast, period 9 seconds, energy 633 (moderate), and the wind goes pure offshore from the west-southwest at 9 mph. That’s glassy, clean, and a friendly size for solid intermediate to advanced surfers. This is the pick for a fun, less intimidating session at this spot.
Monday the 13th sees 4ft to 5ft, clean, nothing to shout about. Then Tuesday the 14th morning brings a 10ft south swell, period 9 seconds, with a light offshore from the northwest at 3 mph, energy 1293 (strong). Big and clean for the experts. Wednesday the 15th is the highlight of the second week: 8ft from the southeast, period 12 seconds (very long period groundswell), morning offshore from the west-northwest at 3 mph, energy 1798 (strong). That afternoon goes glassy – 7ft from the east-southeast, period 12 seconds, zero wind. That’s as clean as it gets, but only for the advanced.
Thursday the 16th is easier – 6ft to 5ft, glassy, lovely for a paddle. Friday the 17th is small: 4ft in the morning, then 3ft in the afternoon but with a 15-second period – a long-period ghost swell, not enough push.
Then from Saturday the 18th to Monday the 20th, the wheels fall off. Swell drops to 2ft to 4ft, short periods, weak energy (53 to 306), and cross winds. The last few days are borderline flat or very ordinary.
Best of the run: Sunday the 12th morning for that offshore, clean, user-friendly size. Second shout: Friday the 10th morning for the big, powerful, clean groundswell.
Take care of yourselves out there.
Rusty.
