The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break down what’s coming for the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a run that starts strong, goes quiet, then looks like it might kick off again later. The spot to watch is Cronulla Point. It’s a classic point that loves a solid SE swell, and early on, we’ve got that.
The best session is Sunday the 19th of July, the morning. You’re looking at a clean 6ft swell from the ENE with an 11-second period, giving the waves real punch. The combined energy is moderate at 1043 units, and with a cross-off breeze, the face is going to be smooth. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers, and it’s the clear winner for the whole forecast. The water temp is about normal for this time of year. This spot can get busy, so expect a crowd.
Sunday afternoon drops to 6ft, still clean and very good, but the morning is the one.
From Monday the 20th, things go downhill. The swell drops, the wind turns onshore or cross, and the quality is poor. There’s a tiny window on Wednesday afternoon the 22nd with a glassy 3ft, but it’s weak and not worth the effort.
Then there’s a long gap of flat, messy conditions right through to the end of July. The wind is bad, the swell is small or onshore, and it’s just not worth it.
Looking further ahead, the final days of July and into early August show a swell building again, but it comes with heavy wind. On Thursday the 30th of July, you’ve got a 7ft southerly swell with a clean offshore wind, but it’s strong. The energy jumps to 1967 units, which is powerful, but the wind is blowing 15-22 mph, making it a fight. The 31st of July has a 8ft SSE swell with a very long 12-second period, so the waves will be powerful and lined up, perfect for a point. But the wind is still strong. For fit and experienced surfers, the afternoon of the 30th and the morning of the 31st could be on, but it’s not for beginners.
By the 1st and 2nd of August, the swell is still big at 8ft to 10ft, but the wind is howling at 22-28 mph. It’s clean offshore, so the waves will be perfect shapes, but it’s experts only. Paddling out will be a real grind.
So, to sum it up: the absolute best is Sunday morning the 19th of July. If you miss that, keep an eye on the 30th and 31st for a bigger, more powerful, but windier option. The rest of the time is a write-off until that last push.
