G'day, it's Rusty. Let's take a proper look at what's on the cards for Cronulla Point.
Overall, we've got a decent pulse of swell rolling in over the next few days, but things turn seriously quiet after that for a solid stretch. There's a bit of a sweet spot from Tuesday through to next Friday, with some real quality on offer, but be ready for a long gap of next to nothing before a late burst of energy arrives in the second week.
We kick off with some rain Sunday the 5th, but don't get too excited. The swell is a chunky 12ft from the south, with a cranked period of 13 seconds, but it's blowing a solid 25 mph cross-off. The energy is pumping (3511, strong), but those conditions are just not clean enough to make it a standout. Monday the 6th is much the same story – 10ft dropping to 8ft, with a stiff southerly cross-off keeping things messy. You can feel the power in the water (1504 and 1380), but it's marginal.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Tuesday the 7th is the day to look at. We've got a proper 10ft swell from the SSE, period at 10 seconds, and crucially, the wind swings to a clean offshore from the SSW at 16 mph in the morning and S at 19 mph in the arvo. That's a 2339 combined energy reading (strong), and offshore wind at a point break like Cronulla Point is a beautiful combo. This is your best early window – the wave quality is solid, and with the break being consistent, it's a proper surf. The water temp is 63°, which is about average for this time of year. Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th keep the offshore flow going with 8ft to 7ft SSE swell, and the energy stays moderate to strong (1947 down to 845). It's still good, but Tuesday has the size and the cleanest look to it.
Friday the 10th is a nice, clean, smaller day – 6ft from the SE, offshore SW wind, and gentle breezes. It's a solid option for a less hectic session, with 664 energy.
Then the wheels fall off. From Saturday the 11th right through to Wednesday the 15th, it's a total dud. The swell drops to under 3ft, and the wind turns cross-on or onshore. You're looking at a four- or five-day stretch where you're better off doing something else. There's simply no surf to recommend.
Now, for the long-range look: we've got a serious pulse lining up for the second week. The standout is Friday the 17th. Thursday the 16th kicks off with a meaty 12ft from the south (3740 energy), but it's blowing a fresh 22 mph offshore, which makes it a paddling battle. But Friday the 17th? That's the one. The morning brings a clean 8ft SSE swell with a gentle 9 mph SW cross-off (2178 energy). The afternoon is pure magic: a 10ft SSE groundswell with a very long period of 16 seconds, light cross-off from the SE at only 6 mph, and a massive 4546 energy reading. This is big, clean, powerful – but at that size and period, it's strictly for experienced surfers. This break is a point, and a long-period SSE swell is the optimum direction for it. Expect a real quality session, though crowds are likely here.
After that, Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th start to drop off. The swell is still there at 10ft and 6ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and cross-on, making it choppy and messy. By Monday the 20th, a fresh 8ft pulse arrives, but it's choppy again. Tuesday the 21st shows a 10ft SSE with a clean cross-off, which could be worth a look, but the energy is lower at 1363.
So, to wrap it up: your top pick for quality waves in the first week is Tuesday the 7th. For the long-range, circle Friday the 17th – that afternoon session looks like the best of the whole outlook, but it's a heavy one.
Rusty.
