The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the 16-day window for Cronulla Point. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, with some real junk surf on the menu before things ramp up in a big, big way.
Right now, the water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing too wild to report there.
The first few days are a write-off. Saturday the 18th of July and Sunday the 19th have some waves, but the wind is a cross-offshore and the quality is just not there. It’s not worth your time. Monday the 20th through Wednesday the 22nd are even worse—small, messy, and not worth paddling out for. You’d be better off doing something else.
Then, on Thursday the 23rd, we finally get a pulse. The afternoon sees a 7ft S swell with a period of 8 seconds, and the energy jumps up to 565 (moderate). The wind is a cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. It’s a solid option, but not the standout.
The real standout is Friday the 31st of July. This is the one you’ve been waiting for. We’ve got a massive 13ft S swell, with a very long period of 13 seconds, giving it exceptional energy (8411). That’s a strong, powerful groundswell. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. But listen, this is a point break, and with that long period, it’s going to be a proper, heavy, walled-up wave. This is for experts only. Any wave over 8ft is for experienced surfers, and this one is well above that. It’s going to be absolutely pumping, but it’s not a day for beginners. Crowds are often here, so expect a crew.
The following morning, Saturday the 1st of August, is still on the cards with a 10ft SSE swell (11 seconds, energy 1922), but it’s a step down from the day before. The wind is still cross-off, so it’s clean, but the size and power are dropping off.
Then, Sunday the 2nd of August brings another solid swell, an 12ft S swell with a 10-second period and energy reading 2539. The wind is light and offshore, glassy. This is another excellent session for the experienced crew.
So, the big picture: a long, flat stretch of junk, then a massive, powerful, expert-only swell hits on the 31st. That’s the clear winner. The Sunday the 2nd is a solid follow-up. Don’t bother with the rest.
Rusty.
