The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. Let’s be straight with you—this outlook for Cronulla Point is a real mixed bag, a waiting game more than anything. The next 16 days start off slow and stay pretty average for the most part, with only a couple of fleeting moments that might get your heart rate up. Most of the period is filled with onshore slop, small weak swells, or strong cross-shore winds that’ll have you wrestling with chop. There are a few gaps with no real recommendations, so don't expect any consistency.
We kick off on Sunday the 23rd of August with a small south swell around 2ft, but it’s got an onshore northeasterly breeze on it and a combined wave energy of only 314 – not great. That sets the tone for the first few days: small, messy, and not worth paddling out.
Monday morning on the 24th is a little better with a 3ft south swell and a cleaner north breeze, but the energy dips to 247. Still not enough to get excited about.
Things finally start to show a pulse on Wednesday the 26th of August. The morning brings a 3ft swell from the east-northeast (ENE) with a light offshore SSW wind at 9 mph. The ocean cleans right up and there’s 172 combined energy. It’s surfable, but it’s nothing special. The standouts are still a couple of days away.
Now, here’s a true standout – Thursday the 27th of August. The morning session looks like the best of the whole outlook. We’ve got a 5ft south swell with glassy conditions (5 mph southerly breeze, dead calm). The combined energy is 396 – moderate wave energy – and it’s cleaning up perfectly. This is your window. The swell direction isn’t quite the optimum SE that Cronulla Point loves, but the glassy surface will make it smooth and fun. Keep in mind, at 5ft it’s getting a bit sizey for beginners, but for the advanced crowd, it’s prime. The water temperature is 62°F, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Friday the 28th of August offers a bit more size with a 4ft SSE swell and a long 11-second period. The cross-shore wind keeps it marginal, and the energy is strong at 457, but it’s not clean enough to be a standout. The long period means the sets will have good shape and power, but at a point break like Cronulla Point, that’s a positive.
Saturday the 29th of August morning is another good option – 4ft SSE swell, glassy again, 275 energy. It’s clean but smaller than Thursday.
After that, the second week drops off a cliff. From Sunday the 30th onward, we’re looking at tiny swells, onshore winds, and combined energy values barely cracking 100 at times. There’s a glimpse on the morning of Tuesday the 1st of September with a 3ft S swell and offshore west wind, but it’s small. By Thursday and Friday, the energy is down in the 50s and 60s – basically flat.
The morning of Sunday the 6th of September shows a bit of a pulse again with a 4ft S swell and 319 energy, but it’s got a cross-on northerly wind on it. Not worth the battle.
If you surf Cronulla Point, keep your eyes on Thursday the 27th of August morning. That’s your one real standout. The rest is just filler.
Rusty.
