The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, lookin' at the next couple of weeks for Cronulla Point. It's a bit of a mixed bag to start, but there's some serious firepower on the horizon if you're willing to wait.
The first week is pretty ordinary. Monday the 20th has a bit of a 6ft ENE swell rockin' in with a moderate 778 unit energy, but it's cross-shore and then onshore, so it's messy. Tuesday the 21st is a write-off with onshore winds, and Wednesday the 22nd is tiny with a weak 3ft swell and only 195 units of energy. The afternoon goes glassy, but there's just no power. Thursday the 23rd is even smaller at 2ft.
Things finally start to look up on Friday the 24th. A solid 6ft S swell rolls in with 540 units of energy, and the morning has a light offshore cross-off wind. That's the first real chance of the outlook, and it'll be clean. The afternoon goes a bit onshore, so get in early. Saturday the 25th morning is a bit windy, but the afternoon is a standout with clean 4ft S swell and a solid 523 units of energy, with a good offshore breeze. That's a proper session. Sunday the 26th keeps it going with another 5ft S swell and clean conditions all day.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from Monday the 27th through to Wednesday the 29th. Swell drops right off, and the wind goes onshore or cross-shore. It's a quiet patch of a few days with nothin' worth paddling out for.
Now, the real story is the week that follows. From Thursday the 30th of July, the ocean wakes up. There's a big 8ft S swell with a massive 1655 units of energy, but it's blowin' a fresh breeze. By Friday the 31st, it's firing. A 10ft S groundswell with a 12-second period, 2777 units of energy, and a clean offshore from the SW. That's proper heavy stuff, only for the experts. Saturday the 1st of August is your best bet for the whole outlook. The afternoon pumps a 10ft S swell with a massive 3077 units of energy, clean, with a light cross-off. That's the one. Sunday the 2nd keeps it going with a 7ft SSE swell and another clean offshore morning. And Monday the 3rd still has some solid 6ft swell with good conditions.
The standouts are Friday the 31st and Saturday the 1st of August, but for the crew that wants a solid session without the massive size, Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th of July are your best early calls. Keep in mind, Cronulla Point is a point break, so it handles that long-period groundswell beautifully, and it's a consistent spot. The water temp is about average for this time of year. Crowds are often a thing here, so be ready for a few mates out on the good days.
Rusty.
