Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown for the local stretch. Let’s get into it.
The next week and a half starts off a bit average, but there’s some serious muscle building for the second week.
We’re looking at Cronulla Point, a classic point break that loves a solid southeast to southerly swell. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
Things kick off Tuesday, July 7th, but it’s a bit rough. Tuesday morning we’ve got a solid 10ft swell from the SSE pushing through with a period around 10 seconds. The energy is strong (2097), and the wind is blowing fresh offshore from the SSW. The catch is the wave comment says it’s marginal – tide or wind issues likely. The afternoon gets bigger at 12ft from the SE with even more energy (2574), but still flagged as marginal. It’s doable for the experienced crew, but not a standout.
Wednesday, July 8th, is where it gets cleaner. Wednesday morning we’ve got an 8ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period, energy sitting at 1601. The wind is a moderate offshore from the south, and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is the pick of the first few days – clean lines, solid size, and that point will be working. Crowds are likely, so get out there early.
Thursday and Friday back off a bit (6ft to 5ft) with lighter winds, but it stays clean enough for a fun session if you’re not looking for big waves. The energy drops to moderate ranges.
Then we hit a flat spell. Saturday July 11th through to Monday July 20th is a long, slow gap. Swell drops under 3ft most days, and on some days it’s as low as 0.7ft to 1.0ft. Energy readings are weak (20 to 276), and conditions are described as poor. A few marginal windows pop up, but nothing worth paddling out for. Time to take a break.
Now, circle July 21st (Tuesday) on your calendar. That’s the big one. We’ve got a massive 18ft swell from the south, with a 12-second period. The combined energy reading is an enormous 14796 – that’s very strong wave energy. The wind is light offshore from the SW, so it’ll be glassy and clean. This is heavy, powerful groundswell. The wave comment says “marginal,” meaning it might be tide-sensitive or a bit too much for the point at certain times, but for experienced surfers, this is the session. The period is long, so it’ll be lined up and offering some proper faces. Crowds will be inevitable, but the quality will be off the charts.
The afternoon of the 21st drops to 15ft, with moderate offshore winds, still excellent for the experts. Wednesday July 22nd holds at 12ft with light cross-shore winds, still solid.
So to sum it up: the first week has a couple of clean windows, then a long flat patch, then a massive, heavy swell event around the 21st. That’s the one to go for if you’ve got the skill.
Rusty.
