The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m not gonna sugarcoat it – the next couple of weeks at Cronulla Point are a bit of a mixed bag, with a real slow start. We’ve got a window of solid, clean swell coming up, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your moments.
The first real action we see is a pulse of S swell arriving on Wednesday the 15th. It’s a solid 8ft at 9 seconds from the south, with a decent amount of energy behind it (904). The wind is a fresh offshore from the SSW, so it’ll be clean. Now, this is a point break, and that 6ft-plus size is really only for the advanced crew. It’s a consistent spot, but these bigger, short-period S swells can be a bit raw and won’t have the same shape as a longer-period groundswell. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is a touch cooler than average for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a bit of a nip in the air.
The real standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is Sunday the 19th. We’ve got a shift in the swell direction to the ENE, coming in at 6ft with a 11-second period. That’s the good stuff – real groundswell energy (841) that’ll wrap nicely into the point. The wind is light from the SE in the morning, which is a cross-off, keeping things clean. This is the pick of the forecast. It’s a consistent break, but it can get busy, so expect some company. The size is still in the advanced zone, but the longer period will give it a lot more push and shape.
Things settle down after that. Monday the 20th sees the swell dropping to 5ft with a cross-on breeze, so it’s a step down in quality. The following week is a bit of a drought. From Tuesday the 22nd through to the end of the month, the swell really drops off, with heights mostly under 5ft and periods around 10 seconds or less. The energy readings are low, often under 400, and we’re looking at poor surf conditions with a lot of onshore or cross-shore winds. There’s a tiny glimmer on Saturday the 25th morning with a clean 4ft wave from the east and a light offshore, but it’s small and not much to write home about. The longer-range stuff from the 26th onwards is mostly small and messy, with the energy dropping below 200. It’s a typical winter lull for the area.
So, to sum it up: get out for the early morning sessions on Wednesday the 15th if you’re a seasoned surfer, but the real day to circle is Sunday the 19th. That’s the one with the best combination of size, direction, and wind. The rest of the window is a write-off for quality surf.
Rusty.
