Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get into it for our local stretch.
We’ve got a proper pulse of swell on the way, but it’s going to take a couple of days to clean up. The main event looks to be Tuesday the 16th, but before that, we have to work through a bit of wind and a size drop. The water is sitting at 63°, which is pretty average for this time of year.
The action kicks off today, Tuesday the 7th, but honestly, it's a messy one. We’re looking at a solid 12 ft groundswell out of the SE, with a long 11-second period, but that 19 mph southerly is making a mess of things. The wave energy is very strong (2528), but the quality is poor. It’s a day to watch from the car park.
Wednesday the 8th is where it starts to get interesting. The swell drops to a still-chunky 8 ft from the SE, and the wind swings offshore from the South. That’s the ticket. The conditions are clean and the energy is still strong (1563). This is for the experienced crew only – it’s going to be well overhead and powerful. The afternoon holds similar size and quality.
Thursday the 9th sees the swell drop further to a more manageable 6 ft, with light winds keeping it clean. The energy is moderate (832). This is still a good, solid session for competent surfers. The afternoon looks similar.
Friday the 10th, the swell is backing off to 5 ft, but the wind gets a bit tricky. It’s clean in the morning, but the afternoon gets a cross-shore bump with some chop (396). It’s still surfable, just not as good as the days prior. The weekend from Saturday the 11th onward sees the swell drop right out with a long 12-second period on Saturday mixing with small, weak waves. The energy drops to double digits (287) and the wind is messy. We’re looking at a flat spell.
Now, hold on, because the real standout is shaping up. Thursday the 16th is the pick of the whole outlook. A new swell fills in at a solid 6 ft to 6 ft from the S/SE, with a fantastic 12-second period. The wind is light offshore or light cross-off, meaning it will be clean and lined up. The combined energy jumps way up (1350), and the guidance points to excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
After that, the size backs off again through the following weekend, and the wind becomes less cooperative with a cross-onshore flow on Friday the 17th. The swell tries to push again at the start of the second week, but the wind is howling from the NW, making it choppy. Not worth paddling out.
The Highlight: No doubt about it, Cronulla Point (Cronulla) on Thursday the 16th is the best session on offer. That combo of a moderate to solid groundswell, a long period, and light offshore winds will have the point running beautifully. It’s for the advanced crew, and it will be worth the wait. Keep an eye on the crowds though – it can get busy there.
Rusty.
