The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here.
It’s shaping up to be a pretty quiet stretch for the most part, with a few sessions that’ll make it worth paddlin’ out. The water’s sittin’ at 62°F, about 2°F cooler than usual for this time of year – feels a little nippy.
First up, we’ve got a couple of windows this week. Tuesday the 25th of August, morning and afternoon, the swell bumps up to 4ft from the ENE and 3ft from the ENE, with a period of 7 to 8 seconds. The combined energy sits at 159 and 151 (moderate). The wind’s a light cross-offshore from the SSE, keepin’ the surface clean. It’s surfable, but pretty ordinary – nothin’ to write home about.
Then Thursday the 27th of August is the real standout. Morning sees 3ft from the south with a 10-second period, moderate offshore wind from the SW, and the ocean’s clean. The energy’s hit 244 (moderate). Afternoon is even better – 4ft from the south, same period, glassy with a gentle cross-offshore from the SSE, energy up to 290 (moderate). This is the pick of the first week. The wind is light, the lines are clean, and Cronulla Point will be workin’ nicely. Just keep in mind, this spot sees crowds often, so you’ll have company.
After that, there’s a long gap with little to no decent surf until the end of the month. The swell builds significantly from the 30th of August onward, with heights reaching 8ft to 16ft, but the wind is onshore or cross-onshore from the ENE, wreckin’ the surface. The energy jumps to four to five digit numbers (1603 up to 14026), but it’s a messy, choppy mess. Beginners should steer clear of anything over 5ft, and by the 31st with 12ft to 16ft, that’s expert-only territory – if you can handle the onshore slop. Conditions are just poor.
The first few days of September hang onto that big, messy swell – 15ft droppin’ to 7ft – but with the same cross-onshore winds, it’s more of a windy, lumpy ocean than a surfable wave. The setup looks more interestin’ for kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The best on offer is Thursday the 27th of August. Early morning or afternoon, either session will give you clean, chest-to-head-high waves at Cronulla Point. Get out there.
Rusty.
