The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here. Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – for the next week and a half, Cronulla Point is flat as a tack. Some tiny bits and pieces roll through, but the wind is all over the shop and the swell is just not there. You're looking at nothing worth paddling out for right through until the end of August. That's a solid 13-day gap of poor surf.
The one and only window of quality arrives on the very last day of August, Monday the 31st. After weeks of nothing, a proper southerly groundswell finally shows up. Monday afternoon is the standout – a solid 8ft south swell (combined energy of 2348) lines up with light cross-offshore wind from the west at just 6 mph. That's clean, powerful, and got some punch. It is big though – this is strictly for the experienced crew. If you're not confident, stay on the sand. The water temp is sitting around 62°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you'll want a steamer.
That Tuesday the 1st of September still has plenty of size – 10ft south swell – but the stronger 12 mph west-southwest cross-offshore wind makes it a bit more of a handful and a notch less perfect. Still clean, but the Monday afternoon is the real pick.
By Wednesday the 2nd of September, the swell drops back a touch to 6ft from the southeast, with light offshore winds from the southeast again. It's still a solid option for those who know what they're doing, but the Monday afternoon is the absolute window to circle.
Crowds at the Point are often a factor, but after such a long flat spell, you'll have plenty of company for that first proper pulse. Don't sleep on it.
– Rusty.
