The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Cronulla Point has lined up for us over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the wait for anything worthwhile is gonna be a drag. We’re looking at a solid stretch of flat, choppy, or just plain messy conditions through to the end of next week. From now until the 22nd, you’re better off waxing your longboard for a living room session. There’s just nothing to get excited about.

We finally see a glimmer of hope on Sunday the 23rd. Early morning, there’s a moment of glassy magic with a light southwest breeze. The swell is only 3ft from the south, but the real story is the period jumping to 10 seconds. That gives us a moderate energy push (151). The waves are gonna be ordinary at best, but that glassy surface will make it look like a million bucks compared to what we've seen. For a few hours, it’s the best on offer.

Then the wind shifts onshore again, and we’re back to square one. Things stay pretty average right through the end of August, with a mix of onshore winds and weak swell. The water temp is sitting around 62°, which is about normal for this time of year.

Now, hold onto your boardies, because Wednesday the 26th gets rowdy. A big pulse of south swell rolls in, hitting 8ft in the morning and dropping to 7ft in the afternoon. The energy is strong to very strong (933), but the period is short at 8 seconds. This is expert territory – way too much heft for beginners, and the short period means it'll be a bit of a washing machine. The wind is offshore from the southwest, which is good for a point break like this, keeping it clean. It’s a standout for size and power, but only if you’ve got the skills.

Looking further out, the window around Monday the 31st shows some promise. On Monday afternoon, we get a clean 2ft south swell with a very long 12-second period, with light winds (261). That kind of groundswell will wrap in nicely, offering long, clean lines at the point. The energy is moderate (257), and with the light breeze, it’s going to be a far more user-friendly session. This is another standout for quality over raw power.

A couple of other mornings look alright – Thursday the 27th morning has a clean 3ft SSE swell, but the energy is lower. And Tuesday the 1st of September begins glassy with a 3ft ENE swell. Keep in mind, this is a point break, so those long-period swells (like that 15-second one on the 30th) can sometimes run a bit straight here, but the cleaner conditions will make up for it.

So to wrap it up: the real standouts for the next two weeks are the glassy, surfable wave on the morning of the 23rd, the big, powerful, expert-only swell on the morning of the 26th, and the clean, long-period groundswell on the afternoon of the 31st. The rest of the time? Keep an eye on the forecast – things can change. But for now, patience is the name of the game.

Rusty.
