The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you: the next couple of weeks at Bronte Beach are a mixed bag, a real exercise in patience. The first week is mostly a write-off, with a few small, clean windows that are more about getting wet than getting barreled. But hold on, because the back half of the forecast has some serious potential, even if it comes with a wild side.
We’re starting off with a bit of a dud. Tuesday the 18th is a no-go, with a cross-onshore ENE breeze making a mess of the small 3ft swell. The energy is weak to moderate (146), and the water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 62°F. If you’re keen, there’s a slight window on Wednesday morning the 19th when the wind goes glassy and the swell drops to 2ft, but it’s pretty average. Thursday and Friday are also small and messy, with only ankle-biters on offer. Saturday the 22nd is flat out tiny.
Then, the first hint of something better arrives on Sunday the 23rd. The morning looks clean with a light cross-offshore wind and a 3ft south swell. The energy jumps to a moderate 269, and while it’s not huge, it’s a step in the right direction. The following few days, Monday the 24th through Wednesday the 26th, are similar: small, clean, and surfable, but nothing to write home about. We’re talking 2-3ft of south swell, with light winds keeping things tidy.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Mark your calendar for Friday the 28th of August. There’s a new SSW groundswell pushing in, with a period of 12 seconds. The morning sees a clean 5ft with a cross-offshore wind, and the energy is strong (734). This is a real sign of things to come.
The standout of the entire forecast is Saturday the 29th of August. The morning is looking great: a 6ft SSE swell with a period of 10 seconds, light offshore winds, and very good surf conditions expected. The afternoon holds up too, with 5ft of south swell and those clean offshore breezes. The energy is up in the strong range (542-552). This is the day to be out there. Bronte is a beach and reef setup, so a longer-period swell like this can sometimes run a bit straight, but the quality looks solid.
After that, things get wild. Sunday the 30th and Monday the 31st see a massive pulse of energy, with swell heights jumping to 10-15ft and combined energy readings skyrocketing into the thousands (1224-3429). But don’t get too excited, as the wind is going to be howling from the south and southwest, making conditions messy and cross-choppy. This is not surf for the faint-hearted; it’s expert-only territory and even then, the quality will be poor. We’re talking about a serious amount of water moving.
The following week, into September, remains large but the wind is still strong. Expect 7-10ft of south-southwest swell, with conditions described as marginal. There’s a lot of energy pushing in (1392-3430), but the wind will keep it from being clean. Only the most experienced crew should even think about it, and even then, it might be more of a battle than a joyride.
So, bottom line: Saturday the 29th is your clear winner, a proper standout with clean conditions and a solid swell. Everything before that is a waiting game. And beyond that, it’s big, raw, and challenging. If it’s too big for your skill level, keep an eye out for the smaller windows earlier in the week. For the brave, the end of the forecast is a true test of nerve.
Rusty, signing off.
