The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let me tell you how the surf's lookin' for Bronte Beach.
Alright, it's a bit of a slow start, but we've got some moments to look forward to. The first half of the period is pretty quiet, with a few days where there's almost nothing to get excited about. Things pick up late in the first week, and then we see a serious pulse of energy rolling in during the second week.
Right now, Wednesday the 19th morning is your best early bet. Bronte Beach has clean, glassy conditions with a light NNW wind and a tiny 2ft swell from the ESE. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—you'll want a decent spring suit. That swell is weak, so it's small, but for a sneaky dawny, it could offer a couple of fun little runners.
After that morning, Wednesday arvo turns to junk, with a strong NE cross-on wind at 19 mph messing everything up. Thursday and Friday are just as ordinary, with poor conditions and very small, weak swell. There's a few days of almost nothing worth paddling out for from Saturday the 22nd through to Monday the 24th. We've got a real flat spell there.
Tuesday the 25th morning shows a slight bump in energy, with a 3ft ENE swell, but the wind is still messy. You've gotta wait until Thursday the 27th morning for the first real standout. That morning looks beautiful with a 5ft S swell, clean offshore wind from the W at 9 mph. That's a proper, clean wave for advanced surfers. The swell period is 8 seconds, so it's short, but with the offshore wind and that size, Bronte will have some punchy, hollow sections. It's worth a paddle.
Now, if you can wait, the real heavy stuff arrives for Saturday the 29th. Saturday morning sees a 8ft S swell with fresh offshore WSW winds at 19 mph. The arvo gets even bigger: 10ft S swell, still offshore at 22 mph. This is expert territory only—way too big for beginners. The swell period is 9 seconds, so it's powerful and short-interval. The wind is cleaning it up, but the size combined with the beach-and-reef setup will make it a washing machine for anyone not on their game. Sunday the 30th is just blown out with strong S cross-shore winds at 28 mph and a big, messy 10ft S swell. Don't bother.
That big energy starts to drop early in the second week. Tuesday the 1st of September morning is a beauty: a drop to 4ft SE swell with light NNW offshore winds at 6 mph, a 9-second period, and clean conditions. Solid and very good. Then Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is glassy calm with a 4ft SSE swell. Another lovely session for a quiet midweek paddle. The last few mornings of the outlook are small and clean but weak.
So, to sum it up: the standout is Thursday the 27th morning for the first decent, clean swell, and Tuesday the 1st of September morning for the best combination of size, clean wind, and easy paddle-out. Bronte Beach can get a crowd sometimes, so keep that in mind if you're heading down. The big stuff on the 29th is for experts only.
Rusty.
