The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, this is a real mixed bag with a lot of flat spells and blown-out garbage to sift through. The first sniff of anything worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Thursday morning, 27th August, and even then it’s a marginal call. From there, there’s only one real standout window, and it’s further out, so you’ll have to be patient.
We’ve got a long quiet stretch from now through to Wednesday 26th August – nearly a full week of mostly tiny, poor surf. A few mornings show clean conditions but the swell is just too small, like 1.0ft to 1.6ft, with weak energy in the 12 to 93 range. Not worth getting wet for.
Then on Thursday morning, 27th August, Bronte Beach shows a pulse of 3.3ft swell from the south, period of 8 seconds, with a clean cross-off breeze from the NNW. Wave energy climbs to 283 – moderate. It’s still labelled as marginal, so keep expectations in check, but the wind is clean and there’s enough to push you around. This is your first real chance.
The standout window is Friday morning, 28th August. Bronte Beach is looking good with a 3.0ft swell out of the ESE, period of 9 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the WSW at 6 mph, making for clean faces. Combined wave energy is 208 – moderate and punchy enough for a good session. This is the best on offer across the whole run. It’s not huge, but the conditions line up: clean, light wind, and a proper little swell. If you’ve got a log or a fish, this is the morning to be out there.
After that, it turns ugly fast. Saturday 29th August sees a big jump to 13.1ft from the SSE, but with a near gale cross-onshore wind at 31 mph and combined energy hitting 2182 – that’s strong, but blown to bits. That’s expert-only if anyone dares, and honestly, it looks more like a kite-surfing day than a day for a paddle board.
Sunday 30th stays messy with 6.9ft onshore junk, and the start of the week brings a long-period groundswell (16 seconds on Monday 31st) but again with poor onshore wind – that classic case of a nice clean groundswell getting ruined by wind. It’s heartbreaking, really.
By the time we get into early September, the swell drops back to tiny, clean but weak stuff – 2.0ft with clean wind, but combined energy under 100. Surfable but nothing to write home about.
Water temp is about average for this time of year, no big anomaly.
So overall: Friday morning, 28th August at Bronte Beach is your pick. Small but clean, offshore, moderate energy, and manageable crowds. It’s not a bomb, but it’s the only real window that lines up. The rest of the run is either flat or blown to pieces.
Stay patient, mate. It’ll come right.
