The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here.
Look, I'll be straight with you – this 16-day window at Bronte Beach is a real mixed bag of frustrations and promises. The opening week is pretty much a write-off for decent surfing, with a lot of wind messing things up. But hang in there, because there are a couple of mornings towards the end that look like they could be the real deal.
We start on Wednesday afternoon, the 15th of July. It's messy. A 7ft south swell is running, but it's getting hammered by a 30 km/h south cross breeze, creating lumpy cross-chop. The wave energy is moderate (691), but the conditions are just poor. Thursday the 16th is no better – a 6ft south swell on the morning with a 35 km/h cross-offshore wind, but still "poor surf conditions". The afternoon sees a 8ft south swell, but it's back to a fresh cross-shore mess. Friday the 17th drops off significantly, with a weak 4ft SSE swell and a 4ft SSE swell in the arvo, both with rain and a gentle cross breeze. The weekend is a letdown. Saturday the 18th has tiny 3ft to 3ft easterly windswell, and Sunday the 19th sees a bit more size at 6ft from the ENE, but it's cross-onshore and choppy, only earning a marginal tick.
Now, Monday the 20th of July is where things start to look interesting. The early morning session is a standout. The wave height is 5ft from the ENE with a 10-second period, and the wind is a clean 10 km/h offshore from the WNW. That's a recipe for some clean, groomed lines, and the conditions are described as "very good". The wave energy is moderate to strong (611). This is one of the best bets in the whole period.
The next few days fade a bit. Tuesday the 21st has a clean 5ft ENE swell on the morning with a light offshore wind, but it's smaller. Wednesday the 22nd has a clean 4ft from the ENE with offshore winds again, good for a grovel session. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are small and clean but very ordinary, with Friday afternoon seeing a glassy 3ft ENE swell – good for a longboard but not much else.
The second week drops off a cliff. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th are tiny, with poor wind and rain. The waves are under 3ft.
Then comes the second standout. Thursday the 30th of July. The morning shows a 6ft south swell, 11-second period, with a clean 15 km/h offshore wind from the WNW. The wave energy is strong (767), and the conditions are once again "very good". This is a solid, clean groundswell that will have some punch. Bronte is a beach and reef setup, so with that 11-second period, it should offer some nice, defined peaks. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 5ft from the S with a 12-second period, but the wind goes light cross-onshore, so stick to the morning.
Overall, the water is sitting around 63°F, which is about normal for this time of year.
To sum it up: the first week is a washout, but nail the morning of Monday the 20th for a fun, clean ENE swell, and the big one to watch is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July for a solid, clean south groundswell. That's where you'll find the best waves.
Rusty.
