The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer over the next couple weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a tough stretch at Bronte Beach. The first proper chance to paddle out doesn’t even show up until Tuesday the 25th of August in the afternoon, so you’re sitting through the weekend and Monday with nothing worth mentioning. That’s a dry spell of a few days right from the start.
Tuesday afternoon finally brings a bit of hope. We get a 5ft swell coming out of the NE, but the period is short at 7 seconds – not much push behind it. The wind though, that’s the real story. It’s a light cross-off breeze, and conditions are showing as clean. The combined energy is at 376 (moderate wave energy). For a beach and reef setup like Bronte, that light offshore wind is going to make all the difference, smoothing things over. This is the standout of the whole outlook, but it’s really just a short window.
The water’s sitting at 62°F, which is about a degree and a half colder than what you’d normally expect this time of year – a bit nippy for an extended session without a decent suit.
After that little moment on Tuesday, it’s back to wrestling with cross-shore and onshore winds, mostly sloppy and lumpy through Wednesday and Thursday. There’s another clean window on Friday the 28th morning with a tiny 2ft SSE groundswell (11 seconds, a decent period), energy at 249 (moderate), and a light offshore. But it’s small – better for a longboard than a grovel.
Rolling into the first week of September, Monday the 31st of August morning has a proper long-period groundswell sneaking in. That’s a 2ft swell from the S with a 19-second period, very long and full of potential, but at a beach break like Bronte, those long lines might race through. The energy reading is 344 (moderate), and with a clean cross-off, it’ll look pretty, just don’t expect a peak to yourself.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning is another clean one – 3ft from the S at a nice 13-second period, light offshore wind from the W. Energy is 335 (moderate). This is the second best call in the run, but still small.
After that, from the 2nd through the 7th of September, it’s a wasteland of tiny, weak swell with power readings under 100 (weak energy) and strong winds. The 6th of September Sunday afternoon flirts with a 4ft S swell (10 secs) and clean conditions – marginal at best.
Honestly, if you’re thirsty, you aim for Tuesday the 25th afternoon, or the morning of Friday the 28th of August. The best of the bunch is that Tuesday afternoon, where the light cross-off wind gives you the best chance at a clean wave, even if the swell is a bit junky. The rest of the fortnight is a real test of patience.
Take it easy,
Rusty.
