The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s look at the surf for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, it’s a slow start. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are pretty much a washout. Small, messy waves with rain showers and a cross-shore wind. The energy is weak (112) and the surf is just poor. Not worth the paddle.
The first real chance of something decent is Monday the 20th. We’ve got clean conditions early with a light offshore breeze from the WNW and a 1.5m swell from the ENE. That’s a solid groundswell with a period of 10 seconds, and the combined energy is moderate (563). The waves should be clean and hold some shape. Monday morning is the standout of the whole run – that’s the one to circle.
Tuesday the 21st morning is still okay, clean with a 1.3m ESE swell, but the energy drops a bit (369). Still surfable, but not the peak.
After that, things get patchy. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd are ordinary, with a few small windows of clean surf but nothing special. The swell is inconsistent and the wind messes it up later in the day.
Now, here’s the interesting bit. Toward the very end of the forecast, we’ve got a big pulse of energy on Wednesday the 29th. The combined energy jumps up to 1125 – that’s strong. A 2.1m S swell with 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period wind swell, and it’s coming in with a cross-off wind. That’s expert territory, no doubt. It’s going to be powerful and a bit lumpy, but for the experienced crew, that could be a proper session. The morning of the 29th is the call, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
The very end of the run, on Saturday the 1st of August, shows a clean morning with a 1.2m SSE swell and a light offshore. That’s a nice little finisher to the window.
The water temp is sitting at 62°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 2° cooler. So you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Overall, the best bet is Monday morning the 20th at Bronte Beach. Clean, solid, and well-shaped. Second best is the morning of the 29th, but that’s for the big wave guys only. The rest of the time, it’s mostly small or choppy, so pick your moments.
Rusty.
