The Lowdown
Alright, grab your board. I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Bronte Beach. It’s a mixed bag coming up, but there are a couple of windows where it’ll be worth the paddle out.
First up, the overall pattern. For the next week and a bit, we’re looking at mostly small, weak swells with a lot of onshore chop. The energy is just not there for the most part. There’s a bit of a lull, and then things get interesting right at the start of September and into the following week.
Looking at the early days, Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off. Saturday morning has a tiny 1.0ft NE swell with a short 6-second period, and the combined energy is a measly 15 – that’s a lake, not an ocean. Sunday morning is the first real glimmer. We’ve got a 4ft south swell rolling in with a 9-second period, and the energy jumps to 283 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore from the NW, making for clean conditions. That’s your first decent window, but it’s not a standout.
The rest of that week, from Monday the 24th through to the 31st of August, is just frustrating. The swell hangs around 2ft to 5ft, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-shore, turning the surf into a messy, choppy bump. The energy is mostly moderate, swinging between 91 and 513, but it's all poor quality. You’ll get a few cleaner moments, like the mornings of the 24th, 27th, and 28th with light offshore winds, but the swell is too small and weak to get excited about.
Now, mark your calendar. The real standout is Tuesday, the 1st of September. The morning brings a 6ft south swell, a bit short-period at 6 seconds, but the energy is a solid 315 (moderate). The wind is light and offshore, making it clean. The afternoon is even better with a 6ft SSE swell and a 7-second period, with 373 energy (moderate), and still clean with a light offshore breeze. This is the best on offer for the whole run. Not huge, but clean and fun.
Then, for the big dogs, look to Friday, the 4th of September. This is for the experienced crew only. We’ve got a solid 10ft SSE swell. The period is a short 8 seconds, but the energy is a massive 1287 (strong) in the morning and 1113 (strong) in the afternoon. The wind is light and offshore, making for excellent, powerful conditions. This is the other standout, but it’s big, powerful, and will be a handful. It’s over 8ft, so it's for experts only.
The rest of the second week, from the 5th of September onward, fades back into small, windy conditions with a 3ft to 4ft swell and poor energy.
So, to wrap it up: the best bets are Tuesday the 1st of September for clean, fun surf, and then Friday the 4th of September for the big, powerful, expert-only session. The rest of the time, you’re fighting the wind and small waves.
Rusty.
