The Lowdown
Alright, let's get into it. The week ahead and beyond is a bit of a mixed bag, but we’ve got a couple of real standouts if you’re willing to pick your moments.
Bronte Beach is the only spot on the cards, and it’s a bit of a tricky one. The water temperature is sitting about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
The pattern starts off a bit slow. Monday morning, the 20th of July, has a solid 6ft of swell from the ENE with an 11-second period, packing a moderate 778 combined energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore, making for clean conditions. That’s a good window to start with, but it’s an exposed beach and reef break, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ll need patience. The afternoon turns to a poor cross-on choppy mess, so make the most of the early session.
The next few days are pretty ordinary. Tuesday and Wednesday are small, with the swell dropping to 3-4ft, and the wind is either cross-on or light, but nothing to get excited about. Thursday the 23rd is tiny, with 2ft and a weak 85 energy, so a write-off for standard surfing.
The first real standout comes on Friday the 24th of July. The morning session sees a clean 6ft swell from the S, with a 9-second period and a moderate 540 combined energy, all under a light offshore breeze. That’s a fun, clean setup for experienced surfers. The swell direction doesn’t match the optimum for Bronte, but the quality of the conditions makes it worth a look.
The weekend is a letdown. Saturday the 25th has a 4ft S swell with a long 12-second period, but it’s blown out by a moderate cross-offshore wind. Sunday the 26th offers a similar 5ft S swell with a 10-second period, but the morning is only clean with a cross-off wind, not a true offshore. It’s alright, but not a standout.
The surf really drops off again from Monday the 27th through to Wednesday the 29th. It’s small, weak, and unremarkable, with swell heights under 4ft and energy dipping as low as 42. There’s a solid gap of several days with no real recommendations.
Now, here’s the big one. Thursday the 30th of July kicks off a serious run of swell. The morning brings an 8ft S swell with an 11-second period, and a massive 1655 combined energy. The wind is a moderate offshore, making for clean, powerful waves. This is going to be a proper heavy groundswell, and with that size, it’s for experienced surfers only. The 13-second period in the afternoon pushes it to 10ft and 3104 energy, but it’s a cross-off wind, so it won’t be as clean.
Friday the 31st of July morning is another standout: 10ft S swell, 12-second period, 2777 energy, and a light cross-offshore breeze. The conditions are clean for those up to the challenge. The afternoon sees rain and a cross-shore wind, so it’s a morning mission.
The first of August weekend is still big, with 8 to 10ft S swell, but the wind is cross-shore, so the waves will have a bit of chop. It’s still powerful, but not as clean as Thursday or Friday. For the experienced crew, the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August offers a drop to 7ft but with a light cross-offshore, making for a cleaner, slightly more manageable session.
The final few days of the forecast, Monday the 3rd and Tuesday the 4th, settle down to 5-6ft, with cleaner conditions on Tuesday morning. It’s a return to more average, but still surfable, waves.
All in all, the best bets are Friday the 24th for a clean, fun wave, and the big swell window from Thursday the 30th through to Sunday the 2nd of August, but only if you’ve got the experience. The big ones are definitely for the experts.
