The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's coming down the line for Bronte Beach.

Look, I'm going to be straight with you – it's a pretty grim start. We've got a 16-day window, but for a long stretch there, it’s basically flat and messy. The first week is a write-off. From August 19th right through to the 25th, we're talking knee-high dribble, onshore slop, and generally poor conditions. There's a couple of mornings where it cleans up, like the 21st and 22nd, but the swell is so weak (combined energy in the low 30s to 60s) you'd be fighting for a ripple. Not worth paddling out for. This is a classic winter lull for this stretch of coast.

Now, things start to get a little more interesting around the 25th. Tuesday afternoon actually goes glassy with a 3ft swell, but it's a short period (8 seconds) and the wave comment just calls it "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." Then there's a messy, windy spell for the next couple of days until we hit Friday morning, August 28th. That’s the first real standout I can get behind.

Friday, August 28th (Morning) is your best bet. The swell is a clean 3ft from the south, with a period of 10 seconds – that's some decent groundswell energy. The combined energy is a healthy 245, which means there's some power behind it. But the real kicker is the wind: a light offshore breeze from the northwest, and the report says "clean." For a beach and reef setup like Bronte, that offshore flow is gold. It’ll keep the faces smooth and lined up. The ideal swell direction for this spot is SE, so a solid S swell will wrap in nicely. It's not huge, but it's going to be fun, clean, and through the working week, the crowds should be manageable.

After that, the pattern gets a bit weird. The wind turns onshore again, and the swell drops. But keep your eye on the very end of the window.

We get a pulse building from August 30th and into the start of September. Sunday the 30th sees the swell jump, but the wind is onshore from the east-northeast at 12 mph, ruining it. By Monday the 31st and into Tuesday, the swell is huge – we're talking 11ft to 16ft of pure south swell with a long period of 12 to 14 seconds. That's heavy, powerful groundswell (combined energy over 14,000). This is not a paddle-in day for anyone but the experts. The period is long, which means at a beach break like Bronte, it'll be dumping and straight. The onshore wind from the east-northeast will only make it a messy, dangerous closeout. For the average punter, this is a watching day, maybe a day for the kite surfers to have a crack if the wind is right. The following days (Sept 1-3) keep that energy, but the wind is still cross-on or onshore and the size is still beyond the comfort zone for most. There are some marginal conditions mentioned for the 2nd, but it's still a lumpy 10ft.

So to sum it up: don't get your hopes up for a while. Friday, August 28th is your clean, fun day. After that, the ocean turns into a beast, but for experts only. I'd be waiting for another clean spell after this swell passes. That's all I've got.

Rusty.
