Alright, Rusty here, and I've got the goods on Bronte Beach. Let's break it down.
Alright, Bronte, it's a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, but there's a definite pulse of energy coming through. The water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so nothing too wild there.
The action kicks off this Saturday morning, the 4th of July. It's not big, around 4 ft from the south, but with a 12-second period, that's a little groundswell. The real winner is the wind – a clean, glassy offshore from the west. It'll be smooth as glass out there. The combined swell energy is a modest 333, so don't expect a heavy hitter, but for a fun, clean session, this is your window. By the afternoon, it's gonna chop right up as the wind swings cross-onshore.
Then the ocean really wakes up. Sunday the 5th sees a big jump to a solid 10 ft from the south. The period's good at 11 seconds, so there's plenty of grunt. The combined energy is massive at 2050, so this is proper swell. But, and this is a big but, the wind is cross-offshore and howling at 22 mph. It'll be clean but blown out and very powerful. At that size, this is strictly for the experts only. The morning might be just about manageable for the very experienced, but the afternoon is a full-on washing machine with 25 mph cross-shore winds.
This pattern holds through the week. Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th see the swell hanging in the 8 ft to 8 ft range, with energy readings over 1000. It's raw power. The winds are mostly cross-off or cross, keeping it clean but tricky. The standout here is Tuesday afternoon, the 7th of July. You've got an 8 ft SSE swell, a period of 11 seconds, and cross-offshore wind. The wave energy is peaking at a huge 3004. That's a lot of ocean moving around. It's big, it's strong, and it's for the crew who know what they're doing. The crowds are a possibility here, especially on a solid day like this.
Wednesday the 8th and Thursday the 9th stay big, with 8 ft to 10 ft waves, but the period drops a touch. The wind remains cross-off, so it's clean but powerful and consistent. The combined energy on Thursday afternoon hits a staggering 3540 – that's the peak of this whole run.
Come Saturday the 11th, the swell drops back to a much friendlier 5 ft, and the wind swings back to a clean offshore from the west. The energy is back down to 384. That Saturday morning looks like a lovely, clean, manageable session.
After that, things wind down. From Sunday the 12th through to the end of the outlook, it gets small and a bit messy. There's a little bump of 6 ft on Tuesday the 14th, but the wind is cross-shore. The real highlight in this second week is a solid swell on the 14th afternoon: 8 ft from the south with 10 seconds, and very light wind. The energy is 1951, so it's got some punch, but the light wind means it could be glassy. That's a good one to pencil in, but keep in mind it's a long-range call, so it's less certain.
For the beginners, watch out: anything over 5 ft at this exposed beach-and-reef setup will be a handful, and when it's over 8 ft like on the 5th, 7th, 8th, and 9th, it's a no-go zone unless you're an expert. The long period swells (over 11 seconds) like on the 4th and 7th will offer better shaped waves and longer lulls between sets, making the paddle out easier, which is a nice bonus.
So, for the best on offer: if you want clean and cruisy, get out there early Saturday morning the 4th. If you're an expert who wants power and a challenge, circle Tuesday afternoon the 7th. That's your standout.
