The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Bronte Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Gotta be straight with you – the forecast is a bit of a mixed bag. The biggest issue is that for most of the run, the wind is just not playing ball. There are a few windows where it cleans up, but they’re short, and the swell direction is a constant fight. The water temps are sitting at 62°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want the thick rubber.
The first real chance for a paddle is on Sunday morning, 23 August. It’s not going to be epic, but there’s a building 3.9ft swell from the south with a 9-second period. The wind is light out of the NNW, which gives us a cross-off breeze. It won’t be perfect, but the combined energy is moderate at 233, and the conditions should be clean enough for a few fun ones. This is probably the best bet in the near term, but it’s nothing to write home about.
Friday morning, 28 August, shows a bit of promise. We’ve got a 3ft south swell, 9-second period, and the wind is a light offshore from the west. That’s glassy, clean conditions, with combined energy of 241. It’s not a big swell, but the setup will make the most of it.
Now, if you can hold out, the real standout looks to be Saturday afternoon, 5 September. The wind drops to glassy, with a 2ft south swell. The period jumps to 19 seconds – that’s a proper long-period groundswell. The combined energy is strong at 451, meaning there’s real power in the water. Bronte Beach is a beach-and-reef setup, so a long period like that can sometimes make waves break a little too straight across the beach, but if it finds the reef sections it could get some serious shape. The light wind will make for a dreamy session. This is the one to circle on your calendar, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it.
Between now and then, there are long gaps with nothing really going for it. A lot of mornings or afternoons are spoiled by onshore wind or poor conditions. The swell consistently comes from the south, but the wind shifts around, usually messing things up.
For the rest of the second week, keep an eye on Friday afternoon, 4 September. That’s a 4.6ft south swell with a 10-second period and offshore wind from the west. The combined energy jumps to 389, and it’ll be clean, but the tide might be a factor.
So, in short: Sunday morning 23 August for a decent clean-up, Friday morning 28 August for some clean but small waves, and the best on offer looks to be Saturday afternoon 5 September with glassy conditions and some long-period groundswell energy. Get out there if you can.
