The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you—Bronte Beach is looking like a bit of a mixed bag over the next 16 days, but there are a couple of windows where it’ll come alive. The break is a beach and reef setup, exposed to the swell and best with an easterly direction, but it’s inconsistent and for advanced crew only. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report.
The forecast kicks off Friday the 17th with weak, junky swells—3ft from the south on Friday morning, dropping to 2ft by the arvo, both with short 6-7 second periods and cross-shore winds. The combined energy is weak (108-132), and it’s just poor surf, not worth paddling out for. Saturday the 18th isn’t much better: 3ft to 3ft, east-southeast, period around 6-7 seconds, cross-onshore breeze making it choppy. Energy is still low (142-185). We’re in a quiet patch here.
Then Sunday the 19th, things start to rumble. Morning sees a 6ft swell from the east-northeast, period 11 seconds, with a gentle offshore breeze—clean conditions. The combined energy jumps to 940 (moderate), but the score is only marginal, likely due to tide issues. Still, if you’re keen, it’s a step up. Monday the 20th is where it gets interesting. Morning has a 5ft east-northeast swell, 10-second period, clean with a light cross-off wind from the west-northwest. Energy is 621 (moderate), and the conditions are clean—this is a solid option for the advanced crew. The afternoon gets chopped by a north-easterly, so lock in the morning.
Tuesday the 21st holds a 4ft swell from the same direction, period 10 seconds, clean again in the morning with a north-west cross-off. Energy drops to 369, but it’s still surfable. The afternoon turns onshore, so same story. Wednesday the 22nd morning has 3ft, clean, but energy is low (199) and the wave quality is ordinary. By Thursday the 23rd, the swell drops to 3ft with a 9-second period—clean offshore wind in the afternoon from the west-southwest, but the energy is only 113, so it’s small and weak.
Now here’s the standout: Friday the 24th morning. The finder shows an 12ft swell from the south, period 10 seconds, with a fresh offshore from the south-west and clean conditions. The combined energy is 3675—strong to very strong wave energy. This is big, over 8ft, so it’s for experts only. The setup is exposed but with that offshore wind, the reef section could handle it. Best on offer for the whole period, but it’s a week away, so keep an eye on it. The afternoon gets lumpy with cross-shore wind.
Saturday the 25th morning has a 5ft south-southeast swell, 9-second period, moderate offshore wind from the west, and energy at 347 (moderate). Clean and good for a session. Sunday the 26th is messy: 8ft from the south on Sunday morning, 9-second period, fresh cross-shore wind making it lumpy, energy 1362 (moderate). The afternoon cleans up a bit with 6ft and a cross-off wind, but it’s still marginal.
Monday the 27th morning is another top pick: 5ft from the southeast, long 12-second period, gentle offshore from the west, clean. Energy is 738 (moderate). That long period means better shaped waves, more energy, but it might break a bit straight at the beach—the reef should handle it. This is a quality session. The afternoon gets a cross-shore breeze and a bit of chop.
After that, Tuesday the 28th morning has 6ft from the south, 10-second period, clean with a cross-off breeze, energy 1366 (strong). Another good one, but the afternoon gets windy and choppy. Wednesday the 29th drops to 3ft, and Thursday the 30th morning has a tiny 2ft swell from the south with a 17-second period—very long period, glassy conditions, energy 204 (weak). That’s a long-period groundswell, best for the reef, but it’s small. The rest of the week into August 1st is blown out with strong onshore winds and big, messy swells.
So, the clear standouts: Friday the 24th morning for the big, clean, expert-only 12ft south swell, and Monday the 27th morning for the clean, long-period 5ft southeast swell. Everything else is either small, windy, or just ordinary. Crowds at Bronte can be an issue, especially on those clean mornings, so expect company. This spot is inconsistent, so when it fires, it’s worth the effort.
Rusty.
