The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Bondi Beach. The next couple of weeks look like a mixed bag, with a quiet start and a couple of standout sessions you’ll want to keep your eye on.
Sunday 23rd August kicks off with some clean surf. The morning is the pick – a south swell around 4ft, light offshore wind from the NNW, and moderate energy in the water (247). The sets will be a bit slow with that 9-second period, but the offshore wind will make for some tidy little walls. Perfect for the beginner-friendly banks we’ve got here. The afternoon, however, gets messy as a strong NE cross-off wind kicks in and the swell drops off.
Monday morning will be smaller at 3ft from the south, but that north offshore wind will keep it clean. Still, it’s just ordinary, not enough to get excited about. The rest of the week through to Thursday is pretty flat or wind-chopped. That Thursday morning is worth noting though – we get a glassy calm with a solid 4ft south swell and strong energy (319). It’ll be clean as a whistle, making for some fun, long-period lines. That’s a nice little surprise in an otherwise poor run.
Friday 28th August morning has a bigger 5ft south swell and the energy ramps up (476). The WSW cross-wind is light, but with that period holding around 11 seconds, the shape could be good if you get the tide right. It’s a marginal call, not the best.
Now, the real standout is Monday 31st August. We’ve got an SSE groundswell pumping in with a very long 18-second period and very strong energy (748). The morning is the session to lock in – clean with a light offshore from the NNW, and waves around 3ft. That long-period groundswell from the SSE isn’t ideal for a beach break like Bondi; it can be a bit straight and hard to predict, but the water will have heaps of push, and it’ll be clean. The afternoon stays clean and the large NNE cross-off wind holds it together, although it’s smaller. This is the best run of the whole forecast window.
A couple of other mornings pop up. Saturday 5th September morning has a decent 4ft south swell, light cross-off wind, and moderate energy (326). That’ll be clean and fun. And Monday 7th September morning offers small 2ft waves with a glassy calm finish – good for a longboard cruise if nothing else.
The water temperature at Bondi is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first week is mostly lean, with a few clean windows, but that long-period pulse on the 31st August is the one to circle. The second week offers more small, clean conditions but it’s less reliable that far out.
Rusty, signing off.
