The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the goods on what's coming up for Bondi Beach over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, so let's get into it.
The surf window is kicking off on Monday the 24th of August, but don't get too excited. We've got a small, weak S swell rolling in at 3ft, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is weak, sitting at 118. It's surfable, but it's pretty ordinary with a cross-off shore breeze. Monday afternoon will see the size drop to 2ft, and the energy falls away to 95, so it's a bit of a write-off.
Tuesday the 25th is a no-go for any decent waves. The swell is tiny at 1ft, and while the morning has a gentle offshore wind, the energy is just 27, so there's nothing to work with. The afternoon is similar, with a bit more wind but still a poor energy reading of 46.
Wednesday the 26th is a mess. The morning is onshore, choppy, and the swell is a weak 2ft with a short 4-second period. The afternoon has a bit more size at 4ft, but the wind is a strong onshore, making it poor. The energy is moderate at 115, but the conditions are just not worth it.
Thursday the 27th shows a bit more pulse, with a 5ft S swell in the morning, and a period of 8 seconds. The energy is moderate at 304, but it's described as marginal, with onshore winds. The afternoon is smaller at 4ft, with a cross-on shore breeze and choppy conditions.
Friday the 28th is where things start to look a little better. The morning has a 3ft S swell with a 9-second period, and a light cross-off breeze. The energy is moderate at 245, and it's expected to be good surf. The afternoon sees a jump to 4ft with a longer 11-second period, but the wind swings cross-shore, and the energy is strong at 346, though it's rated as poor conditions.
Now, here's the standout. Saturday the 29th of August is the pick of the first week. The morning is a gem. We've got a 4ft SSE swell, with a 10-second period, and the wind is *glassy* – dead calm. The combined energy is moderate at 210. This is the cleanest, most inviting session on offer. The afternoon will be smaller at 3ft, with a cross-shore breeze, so the morning is the one to aim for. Bondi Beach is a consistent spot, but expect crowds as it's a popular break.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is a bit of a drought. Sunday the 30th is poor, with small, choppy waves. From Monday the 31st of August right through to Tuesday the 8th of September, the surf is mostly tiny, with heights under 2ft and very low energy readings. There are a few days with some offshore breezes, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. There's a significant gap of about 8 days with no real surfable options.
There is a glimmer at the end of the run. Saturday the 5th of September has a solid SSE groundswell on the cards, with a long 16-second period and a strong energy reading of 514 in the morning, and 624 in the afternoon, with a 4ft swell. The wind is a bit of a cross-off in the morning and cross-shore in the afternoon, so it's a marginal call. Sunday the 6th of September also has a 3ft SSE swell with a 13-second period, and a clean morning offshore. These are promising, but they're a long way out, so treat them as a hopeful heads-up.
Overall, the only real standout is Saturday morning the 29th of August. For the rest, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
