The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Gotta be straight with you – this look for Bondi Beach is a tough one. If you’ve been watching the charts, you already know we’re in for a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks.
It starts ugly and stays that way. From Thursday, July 16th, the ocean is a mess. The wind is howling onshore at 22 to 35 mph, making the waves lumpy. The swell is about 7 to 8 feet from the S, but it’s short-period junk (7 to 8 seconds), with moderate wave energy [538 to 663]. Too big for beginners at that size, and with that wind, it’s not worth it for anyone. Frankly, with that breeze and the beach setup, you’d be better off on a kite.
Friday and Saturday (17th and 18th) don’t get much better. The swell drops way down to 3 to 4 feet, but the wind is still mostly onshore. The energy is weak to moderate [133 to 203], and the periods are still short (6 to 8 seconds). Water temp is nothing out of the ordinary for this time of year.
Then we hit a dead flat spell from Sunday, July 19th. The swell is tiny (1.0 to 1 feet) with weak energy [79 to 94], and while there’s a longer period (16-17 seconds) from the SSE, there’s no size. That’s a solid 2 to 3 day gap with nothing to ride.
There’s one tiny flicker of hope on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. The swell is a pathetic 2 to 2 feet from the S, but the wind finally turns light offshore. The energy is very low [37 to 111], so you’re scratching for knee-high peelers, but at least it’s clean.
The second week is a total bust. From Wednesday the 22nd to the end of the month, we’ve got 0.7 to 1 feet of swell with energy barely hitting double digits. The wind is clean, but there’s no ocean power. A spike of 6 feet hits on Saturday the 25th, but it’s with a strong 25 mph cross-onshore – total chop, only for the crazy ones.
My honest opinion? This is a long, bad run that’s pretty normal when the wind pattern gets locked in. There are no standouts in this 16-day window. I wouldn’t bother with Bondi for at least a week. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a stay-at-home kind of outlook.
Rusty.
