The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, with a look at what’s on offer for Bondi Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, the run-up to the weekend is pretty flat and ordinary, with poor conditions and tiny waves. The water’s sitting at about 62°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – nothing extreme, but you’ll want a good steamer. There’s a bit of weak energy around (141) but it’s mostly short-period E/SE slop, nothing to get excited about. The real news is what’s brewing later on.
We get a taste of something better on Monday the 20th, with a bit of S swell around 2 ft and a clean morning showing up, but it’s still very ordinary. Tuesday the 21st is similar – tiny and clean, but barely a ripple. The whole first week is basically a write-off; there’s just no juice. The swell energy drops right off mid-week (20–23), and even a glassy 1 ft on Wednesday the 22nd afternoon is flat calm, not surfable.
Then we see a big spike on Thursday the 23rd, but it’s a mess – 10 ft of short-period S swell with fresh onshore winds and a huge energy reading of 1350. The break quality is poor, with strong cross-onshore winds and lumpy, choppy conditions. That one’s only for the hardcore, and even then, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The standout period hits from Friday the 24th into the weekend. Friday morning is the pick: 6 ft of S swell, clean, with a light offshore cross-off wind from the W, and the energy is solid at 709. That’s "very good surf conditions" written all over it – long-period groundswell too (10s), so the waves will have some shape and power. Bondi’s exposed, and the swell direction from the S is right in the sweet spot. This is the best on offer, no question. Saturday morning the 25th cleans up again at 4 ft, still good, but Friday is the highlight.
By Sunday the 26th, we’ve got another clean morning with 5 ft of S swell, though the wind is offshore from the NW, keeping it glassy. Energy is still healthy (351). But after that, things get messy again as strong onshore winds and rain showers move in from late Monday the 27th through the end of July. There’s some size, but the wind just kills it.
Looking into the first days of August: Saturday the 1st brings a massive 12 ft E swell, but the guiders say it’s too big for Bondi – wind and tide might be okay, but that much energy (1402) and a short period mean it’s going to be a washing machine. Not recommended for paddling. However, Sunday morning the 2nd is a real gem: 6 ft of ESE groundswell, clean with a light offshore cross-off wind from the W, energy at 635, and "very good surf conditions." That’s your long-range standout – promising, but a week and a half out, so keep an eye on it.
Overall, there’s a long quiet spell until the 24th, then a couple of solid, clean windows. Friday the 24th morning and Sunday the 2nd morning are the ones to pencil in.
Rusty.
