The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next week or so is a bit of a mixed bag at Bondi Beach. We’ve got a real slow start, with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first decent bit of surf doesn’t show up until Friday the 24th of July, and even then, it’s not a classic. The real standout looks like it’ll be Thursday the 30th of July, but that’s a long way off and it’s a beast that’s only for the brave.
Monday the 20th is a non-starter. We’ve got a tiny 2ft south swell at 12 seconds, but the wind is a cross-off from the WNW at 10 km/h. The combined energy is weak (147), and it’s just surfable but very ordinary. Nothing to get excited about. Tuesday the 21st is even smaller, with a 2ft south swell, and while the morning has a light NNW offshore at 10 km/h, the energy is only 62. It’s clean but tiny.
Wednesday the 22nd is dead – 1.0ft of swell with energy down to 20. Thursday the 23rd is a write-off with a 0.7ft south swell. We finally see a pulse on Friday the 24th of July. The morning brings a 6ft south swell, but it’s short-period at 9 seconds and the wind is light cross-shore from the WSW. The combined energy jumps to 511 (moderate), but it’s marginal. The afternoon cleans up a bit with a light NNE cross-off at 10 km/h and a 5ft swell, but it’s still only okay.
Saturday the 25th is a mess. The morning has a 4ft south swell with a 12-second period, but a moderate WSW cross-wind at 25 km/h makes it choppy. The afternoon gets worse with a cross-onshore wind. Sunday the 26th is no better – a 5ft south swell with a light cross-wind, but it’s still marginal. Monday the 27th has a clean morning with a light offshore from the NW and a 3ft SSE swell, but it’s not big enough to get the heart racing.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Thursday the 30th of July is the big one. The morning kicks off with a 8ft south swell, 11-second period, and a moderate cross-off wind from the W at 25 km/h. The combined energy is a massive 1655 (strong). This is solid, but it’s a big wave. The afternoon is even bigger – 10ft south swell, 13-second period, energy at 3104 (very strong). The wind is cross-shore from the WSW at 25 km/h. The forecast says it’s too big for this break, and I agree. This is expert territory only. Friday the 31st stays big with 10ft south swell in the morning, energy at 2777, and a light cross-wind. The afternoon gets blown out by a strong onshore.
Saturday the 1st of August is still oversized, with 8ft to 10ft SSE and S swells, but the onshore winds ruin it. Sunday the 2nd drops to a 7ft SSE swell with a light cross-wind, energy at 1491, but it’s still marginal. The best bet for the average surfer might be Tuesday the 4th of August. The morning has a 5ft SSE swell, 10-second period, a light offshore from the NW at 10 km/h, and the combined energy is 464 (moderate). The forecast says good surf. It’s not huge, but it’s clean and surfable.
The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there. Bondi Beach is a consistent, exposed beach break, and it’s an exposed spot that picks up the south swell. It can get crowded often, so keep that in mind.
The real standout is that Thursday the 30th of July pulse, but it’s a beast. For the rest of us, that Tuesday the 4th of August morning looks like the most reliable, clean option. Don’t hold your breath for the first few days.
Rusty.
