The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – if you’re chasing a decent wave at Bondi Beach over this stretch, you’re in for a long wait. The full 16-day window is mostly a write-off. There’s a big gap of nothing worth paddling out for, and even when a little bump shows up, the conditions are against it.
The water’s sitting at 62°F, which is a bit chillier than normal for this time of year – you’ll feel that if you’re in a spring suit. For the first week, from Monday 17th August through Sunday 24th August, the swell is tiny and messy. We’re talking mostly onshore or side breezes, with wave heights barely scraping 3ft at best, but usually way smaller. The combined wave energy is weak, mostly under 200 (189) – not enough to get excited about. There’s a brief clean-up Wednesday 19th with some NNW offshore wind and a 4ft swell from the ESE at 10 seconds, but it’s still just marginal – surfable but ordinary. Not worth the drive.
The real story is the end of the period. From Saturday 29th August onward, the swell actually jumps up, but the wind turns nasty. Saturday morning sees 7ft of south swell with a short 8 seconds period and a strong SW cross-onshore at 25 mph – messy, lumpy, no fun. The wave energy is a hefty 840, but with that wind, this is a kiteboarding show, not a paddle session. It stays big and ugly through Monday 31st, with 8ft south swell on Sunday afternoon and 965 energy, but cross-onshore winds keep it blown.
There’s a tiny window on Tuesday 1st September: the swell drops to 5ft from the SSE with a better 12 seconds period, and the wind goes light SSE at 6 mph, but it’s still onshore. The energy is strong at 799, but the conditions are only marginal – iffy tide and that onshore breeze means it’s not the clean wave you’re hoping for.
Honestly, the best of a bad bunch is Tuesday morning 1st September: 5ft SSE swell (12s) with light SSE onshore wind. It’s not great, but it’s the closest you’ll get to a surfable wave. The rest? A long, flat, or blown-out stretch.
Rusty.
