The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Well, this is a bit of a tough look for Bondi Beach over the next couple of weeks. It’s not all bad, but you’ll have to be patient and pick your moments. Right now, there’s pretty much nothing happening, and what little swell is around is tiny, weak, and messy.
Friday, August 21 is a write-off. You’re looking at a tiny 0.3ft south swell with a bit of period, but the energy is barely a whisper at 2. Absolutely don’t bother.
Saturday, August 22 is more of the same. Still tiny at 0.7ft to 1.0ft, cross-off and cross-on winds making it choppy. Not worth the paddle.
Sunday, August 23 is where things start to get a bit interesting. The morning session looks best this whole week. We’ve got a 4ft south swell with a decent 9-second period, and the wind is light north-west, giving us clean, cross-off conditions. The combined energy is moderate at 247, so there’ll be some push. It’s a beginner-friendly size, so it should be a fun one for the learner crew. The afternoon gets messy with a strong north-easterly, so get out early.
Monday, August 24 is back down. The morning has 3ft surf, but the energy is only 123, and it’s just ordinary. No standout. The arvo is blown out with a 30 km/h north-easter.
Then we hit a dry patch. Tuesday, August 25 through Thursday, August 27 are all weak and small. The only slight hope is Thursday morning, August 27, when the wind goes completely glassy and the swell is a measly 2ft with a short 6-second period. It’ll be clean but gutless (energy 47).
Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29 are still poor. Saturday tries to push up to 4ft but with onshore winds and a short period, it’s a choppy mess.
Sunday, August 30 is another day for the glass-off crew. A tiny 1ft south-east swell with clean, light offshore winds. Not enough to get excited about, but at least it’s calm.
Now, here’s the standout window. Monday, August 31 is the one to circle on the calendar. The morning has a solid 3ft south swell (energy 306 – moderate to strong), 9-second period, and clean, offshore winds from the north. That’s the pick of the whole 16 days. It’s a great size for everyone, and the conditions should be tidy.
Tuesday, September 1 has a bit of leftover swell at 3ft with a longer 11-second period, giving it some shape. The morning is clean with light westerly winds, but the arvo gets chewed up by a strong south-easterly.
After that, Wednesday, September 2 through Friday, September 4 are all average to poor. Friday morning, September 4, has a fun little 2ft south swell with light offshore winds, but the period is short (8 seconds), so it’ll be a bit weak. The energy is still moderate at 101, though.
The last couple of days, Saturday, September 5, look blown out with fresh cross-shore winds and a lumpy chop. Not worth it.
So, in summary: the best on offer by a long shot is Monday, August 31, morning at Bondi Beach. The next best is Sunday, August 23, morning. The rest is either flat, weak, or chopped up. The water is sitting at a bit colder than normal, around 62°F, so don’t forget a decent wetsuit if you’re heading out on the good days.
Rusty.
