The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you—this stretch is a tough one. Coogee is the only spot on the cards, and it’s an advanced, inconsistent beach-reef-and-point set-up that’s exposed to the swell. The water’s sitting at 62°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
The first real glimmer doesn’t show up until Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. We’ve been waiting through a couple of days of tiny, poor surf—nothing worth paddling for. On Sunday morning, a light rain clears to a cross-off breeze from the WNW at 9 mph, pushing a 4ft S swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate at 277, and the conditions are clean. It’s not huge, but it’s the first time things line up. The afternoon turns into a cross-on mess, so get in early.
After that, we hit another dry spell. Through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the wind is all over the place—cross, cross-on, and fresh breezes—with swell staying small and poor. Nothing worth your time.
Now, Thursday morning, the 27th of August, is a true standout. The wind goes glassy from the WSW at 3 mph, and we’ve got a 4ft S swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps to 372 (moderate, but solid), and the conditions are glassy. For an advanced break like Coogee, this is about as good as it gets in this run. The swell direction from the south is a good match for the optimum SE, and that offshore glass means you’ll be surfing clean lines. Crowds are possible here, so don’t sleep in.
Friday morning, the 28th of August, offers another clean window with a cross-off from the WNW at 6 mph, and a 4ft S swell, 10-second period, and combined energy of 337. It’s a solid option, but the afternoon gets wrecked by a cross-on breeze.
Skip the rest of August—strong winds, rain, and choppy slop dominate. The first week of September is mostly poor, with tiny swell and onshore winds. Then, on Saturday morning, the 5th of September, we get a final flash: a 4ft SSE swell with an 8-second period, combined energy of 381 (moderate), and a light offshore from the NW at 6 mph. It’s clean, but the period is short (under 8 seconds), so the waves will be a bit weak and fat. Still, it’s the best of the long-range calls. The afternoon holds a cleaner 2ft SSE swell with a 12-second period and 253 energy, but it’s small.
Overall, the pick of the fortnight is Thursday morning, 27th August, with glassy conditions and a solid south swell. Sunday the 23rd and Friday the 28th are backups. The long-range Saturday the 5th of September is promising but less certain. Get out there when the wind’s right.
Rusty.
