The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Coogee.
The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag. We’re starting off with some small, clean-ish windows, but the real standout is shaping up for the end of the first week and into the second weekend. Don’t get too excited about the early days; there’s a lot of average to poor conditions to wade through.
Coogee is an exposed beach, reef, and point setup, and it’s an advanced wave. It’s inconsistent, so you need to be picky. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Monday 24th is a write-off. We’ve got a tiny 3ft S swell with a weak energy (250) and a light cross breeze in the morning, which goes lumpy in the arvo. Not worth paddling out.
Tuesday 25th sees a small jump in size, but it’s a weak, short-period NE windswell (6 seconds). The morning is clean with a 4ft wave, but it’s a bit of a junky shorebreak. The afternoon jumps to 5ft, but the period is still short (7 seconds) and the energy (412) is moderate. It’s clean, but it’s messy.
Wednesday 26th and Thursday 27th are poor. Onshore winds, rain, and short-period chop keep the quality down. The swell is mostly S, about 3 to 5ft, but it’s blown out.
Friday 28th is still average. Morning has a 3ft S swell, light cross, but the energy is weak (290). The afternoon brings a 4ft S swell with a longer 11-second period, but it’s cross-on and choppy. Not great.
Saturday 29th morning – this is the first real highlight. The wind goes glassy, with a 4ft SSE swell, 10-second period, and moderate energy (250). The conditions are set to be “glassy” and “good.” This is your best bet for clean, fun waves in the first week. The afternoon goes onshore and poor, so get in early.
The rest of the week from Sunday 30th through Wednesday 3rd September is a wasteland. Tiny swells, under 3ft, with weak energy and poor onshore or cross-shore winds. We’re talking a few days of nothing.
Friday 4th September morning is a hidden gem. A 2ft S swell, 11-second period, with a gentle offshore wind from the west and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (206). This is a small, clean, lined-up wave for the experienced crew. The afternoon stays clean and offshore, but the swell stays small.
Saturday 5th September morning – this is the absolute standout of the entire outlook. The swell is 3ft from the SSE, but the period is a massive 16 seconds. This is a very long period groundswell. The energy is strong (553). The wind is a light cross-offshore from the SW, and the conditions are clean. This is a classic point-break or reef sort of day. That long period will push through the beach break, but it’ll be best on the point or reef. It’s a proper, powerful, clean swell. The afternoon goes to crap, so get it while it’s good.
The last few days from Sunday 6th to Tuesday 8th drop back to tiny, weak, and blown out. The 1.0ft waves on the 7th and 8th aren’t worth a look.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is the glassy morning on Saturday 24th for a clean, fun wave, and the absolute standout is the Saturday 5th September morning with that long-period groundswell and clean offshore winds. That’s the one to circle.
Rusty.
