The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our stretch of coast.
The next 16 days start off a bit flat and messy, but there are a couple of windows that’ll get the heart rate up. The first few days are pretty average, with tiny swell and poor winds, but things start to build from Sunday the 23rd.
Sunday the 23rd morning is where it first gets interesting. Coogee will see a 4ft south swell with a 9-second period. The combined swell energy is moderate at 283. Wind is light and cross-off from the northwest, so the surface will be clean. This is a promising session for the advanced crew, but don’t expect it to be pumping all day. The afternoon turns choppy as the wind swings onshore.
Monday the 24th morning offers a drop in size to 3ft from the south, period 10 seconds, and combined energy down to 182. It’s clean with a light breeze, but the conditions are just ordinary – surfable, but nothing to write home about. Crowds are possible here, so keep that in mind.
Wednesday the 26th morning brings another clean window. A 4ft swell from the east-northeast, short period at 8 seconds, and combined energy at 196. The wind is light offshore from the west, so the surface will be clean again. Still, it’s not a standout day.
Now, if you can wait, the real standout arrives on Tuesday the 1st of September. Morning sees a 6ft south swell, short period at 6 seconds, but combined energy is a solid 315. The wind is light cross-off from the west-southwest, giving clean conditions. The afternoon is similar, with a 6ft south-southeast swell, period 7 seconds, and combined energy at 373. Winds are light cross-off from the northwest, and it stays clean. This is the pick of the first week – good size, clean faces, and the advanced crew will be having a ball.
The next huge standout is Friday the 4th of September. This one’s for experienced surfers only. Morning brings a solid 10ft south-southeast swell with an 8-second period. The combined energy is a strong 1287. Wind is light cross-off from the northwest, so it’s clean. The afternoon stays just as big, with 10ft from the same direction, combined energy at 1113, and clean offshore wind from the west-northwest. This is big, powerful, and clean – a serious session for those who know what they’re doing.
After that, the swell drops back quickly. Saturday the 5th is blown out and messy, and Sunday the 6th morning offers a 4ft east swell with a 8-second period and combined energy at 259, with light cross-off wind and clean conditions – a decent way to finish the run.
Water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual to report.
So, the standout sessions are Tuesday the 1st of September and Friday the 4th of September. The 1st is the more manageable size with clean conditions, and the 4th is the big, expert-level day. Don’t waste your time on the flat, choppy days in between.
Rusty.
