Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Coogee over the next couple of weeks in feet and Fahrenheit.
Straight up, the coming days are a bit of a mixed bag for Coogee. We’ve got some solid swell pulses on the way, but the wind is going to be the main talking point. The water temp is sitting around 64°, which is basically normal for this time of year.
First up, there’s a window on Sunday the 5th of July in the morning that’s worth a look. A solid 10ft south swell is pushing in with an 11-second period, and the wind is blowing clean and cross-off from the SSW. The combined energy is massive at 2088 (moderate to strong), so you’ll feel that power. This is for advanced surfers only – that size is no joke for beginners. Keep an eye on the southerly direction as Coogee’s optimum is SE, so it might be a bit raw.
Monday the 6th and Tuesday the 7th see the swell staying chunky around 8ft to 11ft, but the wind gets messy with cross-shore conditions and rain. The Tuesday morning session is the pick of those with a clean cross-off breeze, but the big 11ft on Tuesday afternoon (SE, 11-second period, energy at 5198) is only for the brave and experienced – that’s a whole lot of ocean moving.
The middle of the week calms down a touch. The standout here is Thursday the 9th of July morning. We’ve got a clean 6ft swell from the SE (10-second period) with cross-off SSW winds at 12 mph. Energy is 807 (moderate), and it’s a much more manageable size for a bigger crew. The pulse has some decent shape.
Moving into the second week, it gets a bit quiet. From around the 11th through the 14th, the swell drops right off, with heights under 4ft and low energy. There’s a few clean windows, but not much push. A real lull in the action.
Then, Wednesday the 15th of July morning brings another solid pulse – 11ft from the S with a 10-second period and a moderate cross-off breeze from the SW. Energy is strong at 2814. Again, this is expert territory, but it’s clean. The Thursday after that gets blown out by strong southerly winds, so no good there.
The real highlight of the whole 16-day window might be the very end. On Sunday the 19th of July morning, we’ve got a lovely 4ft ESE groundswell with a long 13-second period and light WNW winds, so clean. The energy is decent at 636 (moderate). But the afternoon is the one to circle on the calendar – 4ft from the ESE with a 12-second period, and the wind drops to next to nothing from the NW (3 mph). The conditions are described as “very good” and it’s clean. That’s the kind of session where you’ll get lined-up, glassy waves. It’s a long way out, so forecast confidence is lower, but if it holds, that’s your best bet for a memorable surf.
Bottom line: Coogee has a few proper size swells but the wind is often in the way. The clean, manageable days are Thursday the 9th morning and that hopeful Sunday the 19th afternoon. The big 10ft+ days are for experts only. There’s a dry spell from the 11th to the 14th with almost no surf.
Rusty.
