The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Alright, look, the next 16 days for Coogee are a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of waiting around for the good stuff. We have a few solid windows, but you’ll need to be patient and pick your moments. The water temp is sitting at 62.8°, which is about 1.4° cooler than average for this time of year, so it’s not a huge anomaly, but you’ll still want a decent spring suit.
The first real standout I can see is the morning of Monday the 20th of July. Coogee is a beach, reef, and point setup, and it's an advanced break that's inconsistent, so when it turns on, it’s a real treat. We’ve got a clean 5.2ft swell coming from the ENE, with a period of 10 seconds, giving it some decent shape. The wind is light and offshore from the WNW, which is exactly what you want for a clean face. The combined energy is moderate at 606, but the conditions are perfect. This is the pick of the first week, no doubt. It’s an exposed spot, so crowds are sometimes an issue, and with conditions this good, you can expect a few others out there.
The next morning, Tuesday the 21st, is also promising. Another clean start with a 4.6ft ENE swell and a light cross-offshore wind from the NNW. The energy is a bit lower at 442, but it’s still a solid option for a morning session before the onshore wind kicks in during the afternoon.
Then we have a bit of a gap. Wednesday the 22nd morning looks okay with a 3.9ft ENE swell and offshore winds, but it’s smaller. That’s worth a look if you’re keen, but it’s not a standout.
The real excitement comes later on. The morning of Monday the 27th of July is the best of the whole forecast. We’ve got a 5.6ft groundswell from the south, with a long period of 12 seconds, so it’s going to have some serious push and good shape. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the WSW, and the energy is strong at 919. This is a proper swell, but heads up: with that long period, the south swell can be a bit straight at the beach breaks – it’s the reefs and points that will really shine here. This is for the advanced crew, for sure.
The Tuesday the 28th of July morning has a 5.9ft south swell, period 11 seconds, with a cross-offshore wind from the SSW, energy at 778. It’s a solid option, but the wind is a bit stronger, so it’s not as clean as Monday.
After that, things drop off again. The last week of the forecast is mostly small, windy, or just poor. The 25th of July shows a jump in size in the afternoon, but it’s from a short period south swell with onshore wind, so it’ll be messy. The 26th of July has a 6.9ft S swell, but the wind is cross-shore, and the conditions are only marginal.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are the morning of Monday the 20th and the morning of Monday the 27th of July. The 20th is cleaner, the 27th has more power. For the rest, you’re mostly looking at small, weak, or blown-out conditions. Don’t get your hopes up for the second week, but that Monday the 27th is a serious date to circle.
