Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Coogee over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first few days are a write-off. We’ve got a big pulse of swell hitting on the 7th, with the combined wave energy at a hefty 2528, but that’s coming with a strong south wind at 19 mph and a cross-shore mess. The water’s sitting at 63°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, nothing wild there. It’s gonna be lumpy, choppy, and just not worth paddling out for. That carries on through the 8th and 9th, with energy still high but winds staying in the way.
The first real chance to get wet comes Friday the 10th. Early morning we get a light offshore wind from the WSW – clean lines. Swell is down to 5 ft from the SE with a moderate combined energy of 403. It’s a small window, but it’s tidy. The south-east swell direction matches Coogee’s optimum, so the break should line up nicely. Just keep in mind this spot is a beach-reef-and-point setup, and it’s inconsistent – it doesn’t fire all the time, so when it’s clean, you jump.
Saturday the 11th stays pretty small, with the morning offering a 4 ft south-east swell and a cross-off breeze from the NW. It’s clean, but definitely on the smaller side. The afternoon goes even tinier, dropping to 3 ft from the ESE with a nice long 12-second period. That long period will give some shape but at that size, it’s more of a longboard or foiling session.
Then we hit a real dry spell. From Sunday the 12th all the way through to Tuesday morning the 14th, it’s mostly flat or tiny, with combined energy numbers dropping below 200. Not much happening.
Things start to show some life again on Wednesday the 15th. The morning has a clean 5 ft south swell (465 energy) and a gentle offshore from the west – that’s a solid combo for Coogee.
But the real standout, the one to circle on your calendar, is Thursday the 16th. That morning delivers a solid 6 ft south swell, with a beautiful 11-second period and a light cross-off breeze from the SW. The combined energy jumps to 1350 – that’s strong, moderate-to-high energy – and the forecast calls for excellent conditions for experienced surfers. This is the best on offer across the whole run. If you’re an advanced surfer, this is your morning.
After that, Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th stay fun but drop a little in size and quality. Friday morning is a clean 5 ft from the SSE, and Saturday morning has clean 4 ft from the SE with a light offshore.
From Sunday the 19th onwards, the swell hangs around but the wind gets brutal. Sunday and Monday see strong NW winds hitting 16 to 25 mph, making things blown out and messy despite some swell. By Tuesday the 21st, we’ve got a near gale from the west at 31 mph – that’s kite-surfing weather, not paddle-surfing.
Finally, on Wednesday the 22nd, we get a late flurry. The morning shows a 6 ft SSE swell with a fresh offshore wind, but the period is a short 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and less organised. Energy is moderate at 591. It’s surfable, but nothing compared to that Thursday the 16th window.
So, to wrap it up: the first week is mostly a mess, with just a few clean windows on the 10th and 11th. The big highlight is Thursday the 16th – that’s the session to plan for. After that, wind becomes the enemy again. Stay tuned, the long-range stuff is promising but less certain.
Rusty.
