Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s in store for the next couple of weeks at Coogee.
Straight off the bat, it’s a bit of a rough start. This Sunday morning, July 5th, we’ve got a solid 9.8ft S swell running, but the wind is a cross-off from the SSW at 18.6 mph, and the energy is pumping at 2127 – that’s strong. But it’s labelled as marginal because of questionable tides, and this break is advanced only, so it’s not for everyone. By the afternoon, it gets ugly with a 24.9 mph cross-shore and a score of zero. Monday and Tuesday stay lumpy with strong cross-shore winds and the swell hanging around 8.2ft.
The water temp is not mentioned in the data, but given the time of year, it’s going to be chilly.
Wednesday the 8th morning has a slight improvement with a cross-off wind and 8.2ft of SSE swell, but the energy is still high at 2408 – a lot of power in the water. It’s still only offering marginal conditions, though. By Thursday the 9th, the swell drops to 6.2ft and the wind turns light, so things start to clean up a bit.
Now, the first real standout comes on Friday the 10th of July. The morning brings a 5.2ft SE swell with a 9-second period, light 6.2 mph cross-off wind, and the energy is moderate at 413. It’s one of the few times we see “expect good surf conditions” in the data. The waves will be clean and rideable, but it’s on the smaller side. The break itself is exposed to the SE, which matches the swell direction nicely, and it’s inconsistent here, so don’t expect a set every minute. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so you might have company.
The next big moment is a long way off. We’re looking at Friday the 17th of July – two weeks out – and it’s shaping up as the best on offer. The morning has a 3.3ft S swell with a long 12-second period, offshore WSW wind at 9.3 mph, and the energy is moderate at 658. The afternoon goes glassy with a 5.6ft S swell, 12-second period, and an energy of 884. That’s “expect very good surf conditions” and glassy wind – that’s as good as it gets. The swell direction is S, and Coogee’s optimum is SE, so it’s slightly off-angle, but with that period and clean conditions, it’ll still produce some nice lines. This one is worth keeping an eye on, but being two weeks out, treat it as a promising maybe.
Between now and then, there are big gaps. From the 11th to the 16th, surf drops off hard. The 12th and 13th have almost no energy – just 1.0ft to 1.6ft – and many days are marked as poor. There’s a bit of a pulse on Thursday the 16th afternoon with a 5.6ft S swell that pops the energy up to 1138, but the wind is cross-on, so it’s not clean.
For the second week, the standout remains Friday the 17th. Saturday the 18th is okay with a 4.3ft S swell and offshore wind, but nothing special. Monday the 20th morning has a solid 5.6ft S swell with offshore wind and good energy at 651 – that’s worth a look if the forecast holds.
Overall, the next few days are messy and challenging. There’s a small window on Friday the 10th for a clean, smaller session, and the long-range promise on the 17th is the one to circle on the calendar. If you’re a beginner, steer clear when the swell is over 4.9ft and definitely when it’s over 8.2ft – that’s expert-only territory.
Stay safe, and keep an eye on the sky.
