The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Coogee are a bit of a mixed bag, and we’ve got a long wait before anything really gets going. The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
We start off on Monday the 17th with nothing worth paddling out for – light rain, a cross-on ESE breeze at 9 mph, and a weak 3 ft swell from the ESE at only 7 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 189 (weak), and it’s all just poor surf conditions. That pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the week. Tuesday the 18th is similar, with a bit of onshore wind and more tiny, short-period swell. Wednesday the 19th morning cleans up a bit with a light NW cross-off breeze and a 2 ft ESE swell at 10 seconds, giving some surfable but very ordinary waves – combined energy of 161 (weak). But it’s not enough to get excited about. Thursday and Friday stay small, with clean conditions on Friday afternoon going glassy, but the swell is only 2 ft from the ENE with a period of 6 seconds – combined energy of just 32 (weak). The weekend of the 22nd and 23rd is similar: tiny, weak swells, clean conditions, but nothing with any push.
We then hit a real dry spell. From Monday the 24th through to Friday the 28th, we’ve got a few mornings with clean, offshore winds and tiny swells in the 2 ft to 2 ft range, but the combined energy stays low (mostly under 150). These are surfable but very ordinary waves – not worth making a special trip for. The wind does turn fresh offshore on the 27th and 28th afternoons, with a clean 2 ft swell from the ENE, but the energy is still weak.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The real standout is the morning of Sunday the 30th. We’ve got a clean, cross-off breeze from the SSW at 19 mph and a 7 ft swell from the south at 10 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 813 (strong), and while the conditions are marginal (windy and lumpy), this is the biggest, most powerful swell of the whole forecast. For experienced surfers, the morning session could offer some decent, punchy waves if you can handle the strong wind. It’s gonna be messy, but it’s the best we’ve got. Monday the 31st is similar, with a 8 ft S swell and fresh cross-off winds, but the period drops to 8 seconds, making it a bit more crumbly.
Looking further ahead into the first week of September, Tuesday the 1st morning shows a 5 ft swell from the south at 12 seconds, with a light cross breeze and combined energy of 807 (strong). That’s a promising sign, but it’s a long way out, so take it with a grain of salt. The wind is light, so it could clean up, but the swell direction is a bit straight on. For now, the best bet is that Sunday the 30th morning – it’s the only time when the size and power really show up, even if the wind isn’t perfect.
Rusty.
