Alright, let me have a look at what we’ve got coming up. To be honest, the next week or so is nothing to write home about, but there’s some proper swell lining up further out that’s got my attention.
First up, Coogee – we’re looking at a solid pulse of SE swell pushing through Wednesday and Thursday, around 8ft dropping to 6ft, with a period of 10 seconds and moderate wave energy (1736 to 599). Problem is, the wind is cross-shore from the south at 15-9 mph, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy and messy. Not the cleanest. Water temp is 63°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Friday into Saturday, the swell eases back to 5ft down to 3ft, and the wind turns light and variable, with some clean spells on Friday morning as the wind goes cross-off from the southwest. Still, the wave energy drops right off (409 to 295), so it’s pretty weak and inconsistent. Saturday morning might give you a clean little wave if you’re keen, but it’s more of a longboard or grovel session.
Then we hit a dry spell. From Sunday the 12th right through to Wednesday the 15th, it’s flat – like, barely a ripple. Wave energy down in the teens and twenties, swell under 2ft. The wind’s offshore or cross-off but there’s just no wave to ride. That’s a good four or five days with absolutely nothing on offer.
Now, things get interesting around Thursday the 16th of July. We’ve got a sudden jump in swell – 10ft from the SSE, period only 7 seconds, which is short-period, windswell stuff, and the wind is howling from the SSW at 28-37 mph. That’s strong breeze to near gale. Even though the wave energy is moderate (836 to 849), the quality is going to be poor. Honestly, at a beach reef and point setup like Coogee with that much wind and lumpy sea, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle-surfing one.
The real standout, and the one I’d circle on the calendar, is Sunday the 19th of July. We’ve got 5ft to 6ft ESE swell, periods around 8-9 seconds, with offshore to near-calm winds – west at 12 mph dropping to north at just 3 mph. That’s clean, glassy surf. Wave energy is solid moderate (735 to 634). The morning has that clean offshore bump, and the afternoon turns almost glassy. This is the pick of the whole 16 days.
Following that, Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st see a bigger but messier swell, 7ft to 8ft from the ESE and E, with period stretching to 11-12 seconds – that’s a nice long-period groundswell. But the wind is strong, 18-25 mph from the NW and SW, cross-off but gusty. Wave energy jumps up strong (1223 to 2079), but it’s going to be windy and hard to get clean ones. This is for experienced surfers only; beginners should sit it out.
The final mention goes to Thursday the 23rd of July. We’ve got a big S swell hitting 10ft to 12ft, period 12-13 seconds – very long-period groundswell, and the wave energy is huge (2308 to 3810). That’s serious power. Wind is moderate from the WSW to S, cross-off to cross, so it’s not perfect but it’s clean enough in the morning. This is an expert-only day: heavy, powerful waves, and with that direction, Coogee might handle it OK, but it’s going to be a handful. Not for the faint-hearted.
So in short: don’t bother until next weekend. Saturday the 18th is building but messy. Sunday the 19th is your best clean fun day. And if you’re an experienced charger, Tuesday the 21st and especially Thursday the 23rd could give you some serious, heavy waves.
Rusty.
