The Lowdown

Alright, let’s see what we’ve got for Coogee.

Look, to be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim stretch out of the gate. We’re looking at a real dry spell for the first week and a half or so. There’s barely a ripple worth paddling for from now through to late August. You’re going to be sitting that one out unless you’re desperate for a float.

Tuesday the 18th – nothing doing. Small, weak, onshore junk. That combined energy is just 144 (weak) and the water’s sitting at 62°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about a degree and a bit off.

Wednesday the 19th morning, we get a little blip – 2ft ESE swell, period 10 seconds, and a light NW cross-off breeze. That’s clean, but tiny. Combined energy is only 170 (still weak). Surfable, but ordinary. Hardly worth getting wet for.

From there it’s more of the same – tiny, weak, messy. Thursday the 20th, Friday the 21st, Saturday the 22nd… just forget it. Sunday the 23rd has a weird 18-second period on a 0.7ft SSE swell – that’s a very long period groundswell but no height. Combined energy is just 49 (weak). It’s going to be straight as a die and barely breaking at a beach setup like Coogee. No good.

Monday the 24th through to the end of August – still small, still weak, though a few mornings show clean conditions. The 25th Tuesday has a 2ft NE swell with offshore wind and moderate energy (125) – it’s clean, but still very ordinary.

Now – here’s where things change.

Come Monday the 31st of August, we finally get a pulse. The morning kicks off with 7ft south swell, period 10 seconds, and a solid WNW offshore breeze at 19 mph. Combined energy jumps to 804 (strong). That’s a serious step up. Break is Coogee, which is a beach reef and point setup, and with the swell coming from the south-east quarter (optimum direction SE), this lines up nicely.

But the standout – the one you’ve been waiting for – is Monday the 31st of August, afternoon. The swell bumps to 8ft from the south, period still 10 seconds, and the wind swings to a light WNW offshore at 6 mph. Combined energy rockets to 2348 (very strong). Waves will be clean, powerful, and properly solid. This is expert territory – over 8ft, so leave the foamies at home. This is for the crew who know what they’re doing.

Tuesday the 1st of September keeps the size – 10ft south swell in the morning with a moderate offshore, energy at 1740 (strong). But the afternoon gets onshore and choppy, so the magic fades. Wednesday the 2nd still has size – 6ft to 7ft from the SE/SSE – but the wind is cross-onshore, so it gets lumpy. Still rideable for the keen, but not as clean as that Monday afternoon.

So, bottom line: if you can wait, Monday the 31st of August afternoon is your moment. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. Everything before that is a whole lot of nothing for Coogee.
