Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coogee over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been looking over the charts for Coogee. There’s a bit of a story to tell over the next couple of weeks, so let’s get into it.
The first real window of opportunity kicks off on Friday, 10 July. We’ve got a solid groundswell from the southeast, pushing through at 6 ft with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is glassy – just a light southerly at 3 mph – and the combined energy is pumping at 510 (moderate to strong). It’s a proper setup for advanced surfers at this beach reef and point break. The water temp is sitting at 64°, which is pretty average for this time of year, nothing unusual there. Friday morning is looking very good, with clean conditions and that swell wrapping in nicely. The afternoon holds up too, with a slight shift to a 5 ft, 10-second swell from the SE and still glassy. This is the standout of the whole run – a gem of a day.
Saturday, 11 July, the swell starts to back off a bit. Morning sees 4 ft from the SE, with a 9-second period and a cross-offshore wind from the NW at 9 mph. It’s clean, but the energy drops to 370 (moderate). The afternoon gets messy – a cross-onshore wind from the NE and the swell swings to 3 ft from the ESE. Not worth paddling out for.
Sunday, 12 July, the swell drops further. It’s a 2 ft ESE swell with a 10-second period. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 19 mph, so it’s clean, but the energy is only 103 (weak). The surf is small and weak – not doing much. This continues through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday morning, with tiny waves under 2 ft as the swell dies. The energy dips into the teens and twenties. There’s a gap of several days with no real surf on offer.
Now, Wednesday, 15 July, brings a change. A southerly swell builds to 6 ft, but it’s accompanied by a strong cross-shore wind from the S at 19 mph. The energy is high at 900 (strong), but the wind creates a lumpy cross-chop. The afternoon is still 6 ft, but the wind drops to 12 mph, making it marginal. Not the best conditions for a paddle.
Thursday, 16 July, looks promising again. The morning has a 6 ft S swell with a 10-second period, a cross-offshore wind from the WSW at 9 mph, and strong energy at 921 (strong). The wind keeps it clean, and the waves have shape. This is a second standout – a solid session for the advanced crew. The afternoon turns ugly with a cross-shore wind, so get in early.
After that, the swell fades again. Friday, 17 July, through to Tuesday, 21 July, sees a mix of small, weak swells, mostly under 4 ft, with inconsistent conditions. The best of this stretch is Saturday, 18 July, which has a 4 ft E swell with a 10-second period, light offshore wind from the W at 6 mph, and moderate energy at 326 (moderate). The morning is clean, but the afternoon gets a cross-onshore chop. Sunday, 19 July, is similar, with a 4 ft E swell and a light cross-offshore wind, but the afternoon gets blown out by a strong NE wind.
The final week, from 21 July onwards, shows small, clean, but weak surf. The best snippet is Tuesday, 21 July, with a 3 ft E swell, 9-second period, and offshore winds from the W at 16 mph. The energy is 229 (moderate), and it’s clean. The rest of the week is a mix of ordinary to poor conditions, with tiny swells and messy winds. Saturday, 25 July, has a 3 ft ESE swell, but it’s onshore and weak.
The top pick here is Friday, 10 July, with the glassy conditions and solid SE groundswell. The backup is Thursday, 16 July morning – strong swell and clean. For the rest, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
