Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coogee over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna level with you – the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for most of the crew, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. We’ve got a long dry spell starting off, but the back half of the forecast period is where it gets interesting. Let’s get into it.
For the first few days, it’s pretty grim. From Saturday 11 July through to Tuesday 14 July, the swell is tiny and weak, with combined wave energy dropping from a meagre 370 down to just 14. That’s barely a ripple. The wind is mostly offshore, but there’s just nothing to push you around on. You’re better off doing something else.
Then Wednesday 15 July rolls in, and it’s a big, ugly mess. A solid 12ft southerly swell shows up, but it’s a short-period 10 seconds, and the wind is howling at 25 mph. There’s a massive 2184 in the combined energy, but that’s just raw power, not quality. This is full-on, expert-only territory and even then, the conditions are marginal with rain squalls. It’s more of a kite-surfing day than a paddle-surfing day.
Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 July is a write-off. The swell drops and the wind is cross-shore or cross-on, making for lumpy, choppy, and poor surf. Don’t bother.
Now, *here’s* the good bit. Sunday 19 July is the standout. Coogee (beach, reef, and point) wakes up with a clean 8ft swell from the east, with a period of 10 seconds. The wind is offshore in the morning from the west-northwest at 6 mph, and then by afternoon it goes glassy – flat calm, no wind. That’s a dream scenario. The combined energy is a hefty 2225 in the morning, dropping to 1396 in the afternoon, but it’s clean, powerful, and for experienced surfers only. This is the best on offer.
Monday 20 July keeps the energy going. Another 8ft east swell, but this time with a longer 12-second period, which gives it more shape and punch. The morning has a gentle offshore wind from the west-northwest, so it’s clean. Combined energy is 1907. This is a solid second option, but the afternoon turns onshore, so get out early.
Tuesday 21 July and Wednesday 22 July are still big, with 7ft to 8ft swells, but the wind is fresh to strong from the south and south-southwest, making it messy and marginal. The period drops to 9 seconds, so it’s not as good as the Sunday or Monday sessions.
Thursday 23 July is quiet again, with a drop in swell and only light cross-shore winds. Not worth it.
Friday 24 July morning, however, is a nice surprise. A 5ft east-southeast swell with an 11-second period, light offshore wind from the north-northwest, and clean conditions. Combined energy is 862. It’s not huge, but it’s a fun, clean option for the after-work sesh.
Saturday 25 July afternoon is also looking tidy. A 6ft east-southeast swell with clean cross-offshore wind from the northwest. Sunday 26 July morning finishes the run with a 5ft east swell and light offshore breeze, glassy in the afternoon. Good, clean surf to wrap things up.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The real action kicks off on Sunday 19 July and runs through to the end of the forecast period. The Sunday 19 July morning and Monday 20 July morning are the absolute standouts for experienced surfers. The water temp is about 64°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so not a wetsuit drama.
Rusty out.
