The Lowdown

Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. This is Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Coogee. It’s a mixed bag, to be honest. You’re not going to be rushing out the door for the next week or so, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel if you’re patient.

The water’s sitting at 62°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – a good couple of degrees off the mark, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.

For the first week, it’s pretty grim. Thursday the 20th through to Saturday the 29th of August is a real flat spell. Small, weak swell with poor surf conditions. The combined energy is mostly under 100 (weak), with a few small bumps – like Sunday morning the 23rd where we see a weak 2ft Southerly swell with a 9-second period, giving us a combined energy of 106 (moderate). The wind is glassy that morning, so it’s clean, but the waves are very ordinary. That’s the best of a bad lot for a while. You’ll have a few days of similar small, clean bumps but nothing worth rushing for.

Then the real action starts brewing. The first standout is Tuesday, 1st September. The morning is where it’s at. We’ve got a solid 12ft groundswell from the ENE, with a 10-second period and light offshore winds from the West. The combined energy reading is a massive 3746 (very strong wave energy). This is excellent surf, but it’s for experienced surfers only – that’s a big, powerful, long-period swell that will be breaking a bit too straight for the beach, so the point and reef sections will be where it’s at. The afternoon turns onshore, so get in early.

The other day to keep an eye on is Thursday, 3rd September. The morning brings a 5ft swell from the East with a 9-second period, combined energy of 441 (strong), and a light offshore cross-off breeze from the SW. It’s not as big as the 1st, but it’s a much more manageable size for a bigger crew, and the clean conditions should make for some fun, punchy waves on the reef.

The second week has some other promising sessions, like the 4th of September, but the window is tight. The best of the best is clearly the morning of the 1st of September for the big dogs, and the morning of the 3rd for the rest of us.

Rusty.
