The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here.

First up, looking at the whole 16-day stretch for Coogee, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. There’s a lot of cruddy weather and messy wind early on, but there’s a couple of windows that could be worth getting wet for. The first real glimmer doesn’t show up for a few days, so we’ve got a bit of a wait.

The first surf of any real note is on Sunday, the 19th of July. It’s not perfect, but it’s the first time we see some proper energy. We’ve got a 6ft swell out of the ENE with a solid 10-second period, which is that groundswell feel. The combined energy is right there at 726 (moderate wave energy). The problem is the wind is cross-shore from the SSE, so it’s going to be a bit sloppy with a slight cross-chop. Marginal at best, but for those desperate, it might be just enough.

Now, the standout. Monday morning, the 20th of July, is where the magic could happen. We’ve got clean conditions with a light offshore breeze from the West, blowing directly out at Coogee. Swell sits at 5ft from the ENE with that 10-second period. This is the pick of the run. The water temp anomaly is about average for the time of year, so nothing unusual there. But with clean faces and moderate energy (535 combined energy), this is the best on offer. Expect some fun, well-shaped waves, but remember Coogee is a beach, reef, and point setup, and with a longer-period swell like this, it can sometimes close out a bit on the beach, but the point should handle it nicely. Crowds can be a factor here though, so be prepared to share.

After that morning window, the wind switches onshore and the quality drops right off. Tuesday morning, the 21st of July, offers another chance early with a light NW cross-off wind and 4ft swell, but again the crowds might be there for the clean conditions. It’s still a good session, but not as good as the Monday.

Looking further out, Wednesday the 22nd of July morning is clean with a light cross-off wind and 4ft swell, but the energy is dropping (251 combined energy). It’s still surfable, but the size is down.

For the second week, things get skinny. From the 24th of July, the swell drops off hard. Heights under 3ft, and the combined energy falls into the 74-80 range (weak). There’s a couple of clean, offshore days in that period, but with wave heights around 1ft to 2ft, you’d be fighting for a ride. The 31st of July morning sees a strong offshore wind at 25 mph and a 2ft, 8-second windswell, but it’s going to be tough to paddle into in that blow. No standouts there.

Bottom line: Monday the 20th of July is your shot. Get out early, enjoy the clean offshore conditions and that nice 5ft ENE groundswell. It’s steely for a stretch before and after that.

Rusty.
