Table - best surf conditions forecast for Coogee over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee and pull up a stump. Rusty here, looking at what’s on the cards for Coogee over the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burner, so let’s get into it.
The first week is pretty grim, with barely enough energy to wet a wetsuit. We’ve got some tiny, weak pulses from the 12th, but honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for. The combination of small swell and mainly clean winds doesn't make up for the complete lack of power. There is a long stretch with very little to recommend.
The first real glimmer shows up on Wednesday afternoon the 15th. That's when we see a solid pulse of short-period south swell come through, hitting around 10ft (combined energy of 1747 – that's a strong push). The catch is the wind swings strong and cross-off, so it’ll be a messy, lumpy affair. That much swell with a short 10-second period and that kind of wind means only the experienced crew should even think about it, and even then, it’s going to be a battle. It’s a big, raw, unrefined ocean out there.
The standouts, the days you want to circle on the calendar, actually fall in the second week. It takes a while, but the trade-off is genuine quality.
The best on offer looks to be Monday morning, July 20th. We’ve got a solid 7ft easterly swell rolling in with a moderate 10-second period, but the wind is the story here – pure, glassy offshore from the west. That’ll clean up the 10-second groundswell beautifully. The water temp is 64°F, which is about normal for this time of year, so not a shock to the system. The forecast says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and I’m backing that call. The energy reading of 1075 is solid, giving the waves some real grunt. Coogee (Coogee) is an exposed beach, reef and point setup, so it catches everything, but this easterly direction combined with that light offshore wind is the recipe for classic, lined-up walls.
Another beauty is shaping up for Tuesday morning, July 21st. A slightly smaller 6ft easterly swell, but again, we get a clean, gentle offshore from the west-northwest. The period stretches to 11 seconds, which is a touch longer and will bring more shape and power per wave. The energy is still strong at 823. This could be the pick for the slightly smaller, more user-friendly conditions. Gentle offshore and clean – you can’t ask for much more.
After that, the energy starts to taper off. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th still have knee-to-waist high waves in the morning with light, clean winds, but they won’t have the punch of those Monday and Tuesday sessions.
Right, so the call is clear. The first few days are a write-off. The big, windy southwest swell on the 15th is for the brave or the foolish. But that window from Monday morning, July 20th, through Tuesday morning, July 21st is where it’s at. Clean offshore winds, solid easterly groundswell, and plenty of energy. That’s your window.
Rusty.
