The Lowdown

Alright, grab a cuppa, let’s have a look at what Coogee’s got cookin’ over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough stretch. The first solid week or so is pretty much a write-off. We’re looking at a long dry spell from Wednesday the 19th right through until the end of the following week. Waves are tiny, mostly below knee-high, and the wind is all over the shop – cross, cross-on, onshore, you name it. It’s not doing us any favours. The water is sitting at 62°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.

Things start to get a little interesting around Tuesday the 25th. We get a pulse of energy from the east-northeast, with the combined swell energy hitting 159 (moderate), but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s sloppy. Thursday morning the 27th shows a bit more promise with a south swell, period up to 10 seconds, and clean offshore winds from the southwest. The combined energy is 244 (moderate), but the height is only 3 ft. It’s more of a placeholder than a standout.

Now, the real standout for the whole forecast is Friday the 28th in the morning. We’ve got clean conditions, light offshore winds from the northwest, and a solid south swell at 3 ft with a 10-second period. The combined energy is 245 (moderate). For Coogee, a classic beach, reef, and point setup, that south swell with offshore winds is as good as it gets. The waves will be clean, lined up, and with the longer period, there’s a good gap between sets so paddling out won’t be a fight. Be aware, though, that Coogee can get crowded, and it’s a spot for advanced surfers – inconsistent, but when it’s on, it’s on.

Beyond that, the second week gets strange. The swell builds significantly – we’re talking 8 ft on Sunday the 30th, then 12 ft, then 16 ft by Monday the 31st, with combined energy readings going from 349 (strong) up to a massive 14026 (very strong). The period jumps to 12 to 14 seconds. It’s a proper groundswell, but the wind is consistently cross-onshore from the east-northeast, making it choppy and messy. For a beach and reef setup like Coogee, that much swell with onshore wind is more of a spectacle than a session. It’s going to be big, raw, and too much for anyone but absolute experts, and even then, the quality will be poor. That setup actually looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.

So, to wrap it up: don’t even bother for the first week. Friday morning the 28th is your best window – clean, waist-high south swell, and offshore winds. After that, it’s a big, windy mess. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, that’s the call.
