The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, lookin' at the Coogee outlook. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there's a serious standout that's got me excited if you're an expert. We've got a fair bit of waiting to do, so let's get into it.
We start off with a pretty grim run of small, choppy, cross-onshore slop. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are write-offs, with tiny energy readings (141, 154, 1049 – that last one is a lot of energy but it's messy) and wonky winds. Not worth paddling out for.
The first real sign of life comes on Monday morning, the 20th of July. The wind swings offshore from the west, a light breeze, cleaning things right up. The swell is a solid 5ft from the ENE with a 10-second period, and the energy is moderate (687). It's a beach, reef, and point set-up, so the long period ENE swell might be a bit straight at the beach, but the point should offer some shape. Conditions are clean, and it's looking like the best of a so-so week. The water temp is about average for the time of year. Tuesday morning the 21st also has clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze, but the swell is a bit smaller at 4ft.
There's a few more mornings with offshores, like Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd, but the swell gets real small, under 3ft, and the energy drops off. It's surfable, but nothing to get excited about. Then Thursday arvo sees a jump in size to 7ft from the south, but it's cross-onshore and messy.
Friday the 24th morning has a clean look with a 4ft south swell, but the wind is cross-offshore. The rest of that week is a bit of a grind with small, weak surf.
Now, hold onto your board, because there's a monster on the horizon. On Friday the 31st of July, very early morning, we get a massive 13ft south swell, 13-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the west. The combined energy reading is a whopping 8411 – that's some serious grunt. This is an exceptional forecast for expert surfers only. That swell is going to be big and powerful, and with a long period, it'll be a proper groundswell. At a beach, reef, and point break like Coogee, the point or reef might handle it best, as the beach could get a bit straight and heavy. The crowds are known to be around sometimes, but on a Friday morning with that size, it might thin out the pack.
Saturday the 1st of August is still big, with a 10ft SSE swell, but the wind is cross-shore and a bit messy, and the energy is still very strong (1922). Sunday the 2nd is similar, with a 12ft south swell but light cross-shore winds and rain showers. For the absolute best, you want that Friday morning session. It's a long way out, so the forecast could shift, but as it stands, it's the one to circle on the calendar.
