The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Coogee. The outlook kicks off with a bit of a wait. We’ve got a few days of messy, blown-out conditions before we get anything worth getting excited about.
Sunday, the 19th of July, is a write-off. The swell’s a bumpy 6 ft from the ENE, but that cross-on SE wind is making a mess of it. The combined energy is moderate (957), but the surf is poor. Not worth paddling out. Monday morning the 20th is where we start to see a glimmer. The wind swings to a light WNW cross-off, and the swell holds at 6 ft from the ENE. It’s clean, and the energy is still moderate (778). It’s not a standout, but it’s a solid start to the week. Monday afternoon goes back to rubbish with a NE cross-on.
Tuesday morning the 21st is clean again with a light NNW cross-off and a smaller 4 ft ENE swell (energy 376). It’s surfable, but it’s not going to blow your mind. Wednesday morning the 22nd brings a proper offshore from the WNW, 15 km/h, and a 4 ft ENE swell. Clean lines, but small. Energy is weak (230). Thursday and Friday are a mixed bag, with Thursday morning having a solid 25 km/h offshore but only 2 ft – too small. Friday morning the 24th sees a bump in size to 5 ft from the S, with a light offshore wind and moderate energy (355). Good, but not the best of the window.
The real standout is Sunday, the 26th of July. This is the one. We’ve got a 8 ft S swell, long period at 12 seconds, and a clean cross-off from the SW. The combined energy is a whopping 3264 – that’s strong. This is excellent surf, but it’s only for experienced surfers. At this size, with that long period, Coogee’s beach and reef setup will be powerful. The water temp is 62°, which is about 2° cooler than average for this time of year – nothing unusual, just a bit of a sting in the air.
After that, the following week drops off quickly. Monday, the 27th, to the end of the month is mostly small, weak, or windy. The 1st of August brings a 6 ft S swell on Saturday morning, but the cross-shore wind and moderate chop make it marginal. The best of the second week is Sunday, the 2nd of August: a clean 5 ft S swell with a light offshore wind and moderate energy (427). It’s a decent morning session, but nothing like that Sunday the 26th.
So, bottom line: for the next 16 days, your best bet is the 26th of July – Sunday morning. That’s the standout. The rest is either too small, too windy, or too messy. The crowd at Coogee can be a bit of a factor when it’s good, so get in early.
Rusty.
