The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. This is Rusty, and I’m looking at the stretch ahead for Coogee. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some windows where it’ll be well worth paddling out.
We start off Sunday the 23rd with a bit of a tease. The morning is looking promising: a 4ft south swell, 9-second period, with a light northwesterly breeze keeping it clean. The combined energy is moderate at 256. It’s not massive, but it’s surfable and clean. That afternoon, the wind swings around to the northeast and picks up, turning it choppy and messy, so get your session in early.
Monday the 24th is a write-off. The swell drops right off, and the wind is all over the shop, cross-shore and cross-onshore, making for lumpy, poor conditions. Tuesday the 25th has a bit of a bump in the morning with a cross-off wind, but the swell is small and from the east-northeast, with a weak, short period that just doesn’t have any punch. The afternoon gets a little bigger at 5ft, but it’s from the northeast, short period, and the rain sets in.
Wednesday the 26th is more of the same: small, weak, ordinary. Not worth getting excited about.
Now, Thursday the 27th is where things get interesting. The morning is a standout. The wind drops to zero – glassy, dead calm – and a 4ft south swell rolls in with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a solid 373. It’s gonna be clean, lined up, and a real treat. That’s the pick of the early window. The afternoon goes cross-onshore again, so nail the morning.
Friday the 28th is another cracker morning. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the south, period hits 11 seconds, and the wind is true offshore from the west-southwest. The energy jumps to 537. This is quality. The wave shape will be there, the power is there, and it’s clean. Get on it.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th drift back into mediocrity, with onshore winds and smaller, weaker swells for the most part. Early Sunday morning the 30th has a moment with a clean, 4ft south swell, but the wind is just a slight air, so it’s worth a look if you’re keen.
Heading into the next week, we’ve got a real bluebird day on Monday the 31st. The morning is magic: clear skies, light north-northwest cross-off wind, and a 3ft south-southeast swell with a very long period of 18 seconds. The energy is up at 776. That’s a groundswell, and it’s going to wrap in with serious push. At Coogee, a point and reef setup, this long-period energy will run nicely, offering clean, lined-up waves. The afternoon blows out, but the morning is a session to remember.
Tuesday the 1st of September is all about the offshore wind. Both morning and afternoon have clean, gentle offshore breezes, with a 3ft south swell at 13 seconds in the morning and 3ft at 12 seconds in the afternoon. Energy is moderate (358 down to 279). It’s consistent, clean, and fun.
After that, the run fades. Wednesday and Thursday are small, weak, and ordinary. Friday the 4th sees a pulse of 4ft south swell at 11 seconds in the morning, clean, with moderate energy (457), but it’s flagged as marginal on the tide. It’s a gamble, but could be a sneaky one.
The final weekend and into the following Monday is mostly onshore and weak, with a few clean moments but nothing that jumps out as a standout. The last morning on Monday the 7th has a glassy 2ft south swell, but it’s surfable, not special.
Best of the bunch: Without a doubt, the morning of Thursday the 27th and the morning of Friday the 28th are the top picks. Thursday wins for the glassy, dead-calm conditions and a solid 4ft south swell. Friday wins for the bigger 5ft swell with true offshore wind and more energy. Both are clean, powerful, and well worth the paddle out.
Crowds at Coogee can be a factor sometimes, so get in early if you want a quieter lineup.
Rusty.
