The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight up – Coogee’s in for a long, quiet stretch. We’re looking at a solid run of poor conditions from now through to the end of August, with barely a wave worth paddling for. The energy just isn’t there, and when it does show up, the wind ruins it. There’s one standout way down the track, but you’ll need patience.
First up, Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th: forget it. Rain showers and light E/ESE winds blowing onshore or cross-onshore, with weak 3ft to 3ft ESE swells at a short 7 seconds. Combined energy’s only 144 to 206 (moderate at best), and the wave comment says it all – poor surf. The water’s sitting at 61°, which is 3° cooler than normal for this time of year, so you’re feeling that winter chill.
Wednesday the 19th morning offers a tiny glimmer. A clean 2ft ESE groundswell (10-second period) with a light NNW cross-offshore breeze. Combined energy is 180 (moderate). Surfable but very ordinary – it’s a 1/10 in my book. Not a session to get excited about.
From Thursday the 20th right through to Monday the 24th morning, it’s more of the same: tiny waves, 1ft to 3ft, mostly E or S swells, poor to only “surfable but very ordinary”. Winds swing around but are mostly cross-off or offshore at times. The energy drops right off – down to 18 to 148 – weak stuff. Not worth a look.
Tuesday the 25th brings a shift, but not a good one. A 2ft S swell at 9 seconds, but onshore S winds at 22 mph create fresh cross-shore chop. Energy hits 181 (moderate), but conditions are poor. Wednesday the 26th is similar – 3ft S swell, 11 seconds, but still windy and messy. Thursday the 27th morning finally cleans up: a gentle WSW offshore breeze and a clean 3ft SSE swell (10 seconds, energy 186 – moderate). Surfable, ordinary again. Not a highlight.
Now, here’s the one that could be worth circling on your calendar – Friday the 28th morning. Coogee (beach, reef and point) sees a jump in size: 6ft NE swell at 8 seconds, with a light NNE breeze – cross-shore but nearly glassy. Combined energy jumps to 703 (strong). It’s marginal due to tide, but the wave comment gives it a 2/10 – the best we’ve seen in this outlook. That 6ft is solid; it’ll be too much for beginners, and with a short 8-second period, it might be a bit lumpy. But for advanced crew, that morning window looks like the only proper chance in 16 days. Saturday the 29th morning offers a smaller 3ft ENE swell (10 seconds, energy 273 – moderate) and a light ESE cross-onshore breeze. Clean enough, but nothing special.
Then it’s back to poor from Sunday the 30th through Tuesday the 1st of September: strong NE winds (19-25 mph), tiny 2ft to 3ft ENE swells, energy dropping to 68–134 (weak to moderate). Messy, lumpy, not worth it.
So here’s the deal – this is a 16-day outlook with absolutely no truly good surf. Friday the 28th morning is the standout, but it’s a marginal call with that short period and iffy tide. For a spot that’s already inconsistent, this blank run is pretty normal for Coogee in late winter. Don’t hold your breath. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is the reality.
