The Lowdown

Alright, let’s see what we’ve got here. The first week is a bit of a write-off, to be honest. For the first few days, we’ve got next to nothing – just tiny, weak dribble. Don’t bother paddling out until Thursday the 30th of July. That’s when things start to look interesting.

The real action kicks off Thursday morning at Maroubra Beach (beach and reef). We’re looking at a solid pulse of 6ft swell from the S with a moderate 8-second period. The combined energy is moderate (827), so there’s some push behind it. The wind is a clean WSW offshore breeze, 6 mph, which is going to leave the surface butter-smooth. This is the standout of the entire outlook. The water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is about normal for this time of year. Thursday afternoon drops off a little as the wind shifts onshore, so hit it early.

Friday the 31st stays big but gets messy. The morning has 7ft from the S, but the wind is cross-shore from the SSW at 9 mph, putting a bit of chop on the face. The energy is pumping strong (1232), but it’s not as clean as Thursday. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the S at 12 mph, and it gets choppy. This is borderline for experts only at that size.

Saturday the 1st of August sees the swell drop to a more manageable 4ft from the SSE. The real magic is Saturday afternoon – the wind goes completely glassy with 0 mph from the SE. It’s dead calm. That’s a rare treat. The energy is still moderate (370), so you’ll get some fun, clean waves. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.

Sunday the 2nd of August keeps the 4ft SSE swell, but the period stretches out to 12 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The morning has a light NNW offshore breeze (9 mph) and the energy is strong (508). This is another excellent session, but the longer period might make the waves a bit more walled-up at the beach, so the reef sections could be the pick.

After that, the second week gets a bit hit-and-miss. There’s a gap of poor conditions from Monday the 3rd through to Tuesday the 4th. Then Wednesday the 5th of August morning has a clean 6ft from the SSE with a WNW offshore breeze, but the period is only 6 seconds – short and weak. The energy is lackluster. It’s surfable.

The following weekend, looking at the 8th and 9th of August, we see a promising pattern. Saturday the 8th morning has 6ft from the SE with a NNW offshore breeze, 6 mph, and the energy jumps to strong (762). Sunday the 9th morning is similar, 6ft from the SE with a light NNW cross-offshore breeze, and again strong energy (660). These are promising, but we’re a week and a half out, so keep an eye on the forecast.

The bottom line: Thursday the 30th of July morning is your best bet – clean, offshore, and a solid 6ft. Saturday afternoon the 1st of August is a close second for the glassy conditions. The rest is a mix of clean windows and choppy slop.
