Alright, Rusty here, let's see what we've got for Maroubra Beach.
First thing, the water temp is sitting about average for this time of year, so no surprises wetsuit-wise.
Right now, we’re in for a rough stretch. The first few days are a write-off for a proper surf. Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th are pure misery with rain, strong cross-onshore winds, and a big, lumpy mess in the 8ft to 12ft range. The combined wave energy is brutal – readings like 2097 and 2574 – but it's all just wind-affected slop. Thursday the 9th isn't much better. You’d have to be a keen kiter to get any fun out of this setup.
Friday the 10th starts to drop off, but conditions are still marginal with a light cross-shore breeze. The swell is around 5ft (467 combined energy), so nothing worth rushing for.
The heart of the outlook is Saturday the 11th. That's your standout. We get a window of clean surf with a gentle offshore wind from the WNW. Swell is a small clean 4ft from the SE (274 combined energy). It won’t be big, but it’ll have a bit of shape and be way more pleasant than what we’ve been dealing with. It’s the best on offer for a Saturday session.
From Sunday the 12th onward, we drop right off. The swell gets tiny – under 3ft – through the middle of next week. Conditions blow up again with stronger winds. There’s a small pulse that tries to show on Tuesday the 14th afternoon, with a cleaner 3ft southerly swell, but it’s really just a teaser. Wednesday the 15th has a similar-sized S swell, but the wind swings cross-onshore and messes it up by the afternoon.
Then we hit a dead zone. Thursday the 16th through to the weekend, it’s all small, messy, and blown out. Not a single session worth the paddle. The only thing that breaks this quiet spell is a massive pulse that appears way out on the horizon. On Tuesday the 21st of July, the models are showing a huge 18ft southerly swell with a combined energy reading of 14796 – that's enormous. But it’s too big for the break, plain and simple. The same goes for the following Wednesday morning with 12ft swell. That kind of juice at Maroubra is for experts only, and even then it would be a wild, dangerous affair.
So, short story: grit your teeth through the first messy week. Your best bet is a clean, small session on Saturday the 11th. After that, we're waiting out a dry spell until a giant, expert-only swell hits in the third week.
Rusty.
