The Lowdown
Alright, mates, Rusty here. Let’s get down to it. Looking at the next couple of weeks, it’s a real mixed bag. The water’s at 62°, which is running a bit colder than the usual for this time of year, so you’ll be wanting the hood and booties.
The first few days are a total write-off. Tuesday and Wednesday are small, messy, and the wind is all over the place. There’s a window of glassy conditions on Wednesday morning, but with the swell at a tiny 2ft and weak energy, it’s not worth the effort.
From Thursday through to next Wednesday, we’re in a flat spell. There’s a little bump of south swell on Sunday morning with a clean 3ft and offshore wind, but it lacks power, with only moderate energy. It’s surfable, but it’s a tease.
Now, here’s the good stuff. The change comes in on Friday, August 28th. The swell builds to a clean 5ft from the SSW with a long 12-second period, and the energy kicks into a strong range. Saturday morning looks a bit uncertain, but Saturday afternoon is the call. You’re getting a solid 5ft of south swell, clean conditions, and strong energy, all with light offshore winds. This is the best session of the whole forecast. Maroubra (Sydney) will have proper, lined-up waves.
That’s your window. If you can get out on Saturday the 29th, do it.
After that, a big southerly gale destroys the place. From August 30th, we’re looking at 10 to 15 feet of howling, wind-blown chaos with gale-force winds. The energy is massive, but it’s all onshore slop. This isn’t a paddle-surfing scenario; the beach and reef will be a full-on kite-surfing spectacle. It stays like that for a few days.
So, don’t be fooled by the big numbers at the end. The one standout in this run is that Saturday afternoon. Mark it in the calendar.
Rusty.
