The Lowdown

Alright, let’s talk in feet and Fahrenheit. Rusty here.

First up, Maroubra Beach. The water’s running a bit cool for this time of year, about 62°, which is a couple of degrees below the long-term average. You’ll be wanting a decent wetsuit.

The next few days are pretty quiet. Monday morning on the 3rd of August is your first real look. It’s not huge, but there’s a clean 3ft southeast swell with a solid 11-second period, and a light NNW offshore breeze. The combined energy is moderate at 232. It’s not a standout, but it’s surfable and clean. The afternoon drops off a little with a smaller 3ft swell and a cross-off breeze, still rideable but nothing special.

From Tuesday the 4th through to the end of the first week, it’s a real flat spell. Swell sizes bottom out, periods are short, and the winds are mostly cross or onshore. There’s a gap of about five days where there’s barely anything worth paddling out for. The odd morning might have clean conditions, but the wave height is tiny and energy is weak. You’re looking at combined energy values mostly under 100, sometimes as low as 14. It’s frustrating, but it happens.

Then we get to Friday the 14th of August. That morning is the one true standout of the whole outlook. A solid 10ft south swell, period of 9 seconds, and a light NNW offshore breeze. The combined energy is massive at 2057. This is a serious groundswell, and for a beach and reef setup like Maroubra, that’s a lot of power. It’s going to be excellent for experienced surfers only—this is too big for beginners and will push even advanced crew. The wind is offshore and clean, so the waves will be well-shaped, but with that size and period, expect some raw, heavy sets. The afternoon turns ugly with a strong NE cross-shore, so absolutely get on it early.

Saturday the 15th drops back to 5ft, still some size, but winds are cross-off and the energy is moderate at 392. It’s a step down, and the following days are more of a mix of weak swell and unfriendly winds. The second week is mostly small, messy, or both. A few mornings have clean conditions but the wave heights are under 3ft with low energy. There’s a Tuesday morning on the 18th with a 2ft south swell and a light offshore, but it’s very ordinary.

So, to sum it up: the first week is mostly flat and frustrating. Don’t hold your breath. But that Friday the 14th morning is the real deal. Get it while it’s clean and big. After that, it fades out quickly.

Rusty.
