The Lowdown
Alright, let me break this down for you.
Straight up, the next couple weeks at Voodoo (advanced reef break) won't be a constant groove, but there’s a couple sessions that are well worth paddling out for. The water is running about 62°, which is a bit colder than average for this time—about 2° below normal, so maybe throw on a spring suit or a little extra rubber.
First real look is Sunday, August 23rd. We’ve got a 4ft south swell coming in with a light NNW breeze in the morning, keeping the surface clean. The swell energy is moderate around that 247 mark. The waves will be a little inconsistent, but when they come through, they’ll have good shape. It’s exposed to the south, and that’s what this reef wants to see. You might share it with a few others—the crowd meter says "sometimes"—so it’s not packed.
Monday the 24th starts off with clean 3ft waves, but the quality ain’t really there. Energy is fading. From Tuesday the 25th through Saturday the 29th, you’re looking at a real dry stretch: poor conditions, messy winds, small to tiny surf. There’s a flicker on Thursday morning the 27th: a 5ft south swell with moderate energy (294) and nearly no wind, but that light cross-onshore breeze brings ripples. Not clean enough to get excited about.
But then… Monday, August 31st. This is the one. Glassy conditions and a 19-second south groundswell at 2ft, but with solid energy hitting 353. That glassy wind and long-period swell is the dream combo for this reef break. For a spot that’s inconsistent, this is a special window. The waves will have real push from that groundswell, and the reef will shape them nicely. The crowds may be "sometimes," and with such a premium, rare window, you know the locals will be keen, but there’s enough juice to spread the love.
Tuesday, September 1st, also cleans up nicely with 3ft from the south and gentle offshores.
The second week fades fast. From Wednesday, September 2nd onward, heights drop to 1ft or less, the winds get funky, and energy falls off a cliff. By the following weekend, it’s basically flat and messy.
So my pick? August 31st is your standout. It’s two weeks out, so don’t book your flights yet, but it’s got all the ingredients. The swell direction matches perfectly, the wind will be glassy, and the reef will make the most of that long-period energy. Keep an eye on it.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
