The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been looking at the next 16 days for Voodoo, a reef setup that needs the right swell and wind to fire. Honestly, it’s a long, dry stretch before anything good shows up. From the 20th of August through the 31st of August, there’s barely any surf to speak of. Swell heights are tiny, mostly under 2 feet, and the energy is pathetic – combined energy values are stuck between 2 and 100, which is weak. The water temperature is 62°F, and it’s a bit colder than normal, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit. The wind is all over the place, but there’s no swell to make it matter. For a reef like Voodoo, it’s a frustrating run of flatness.
Then, on the 1st of September, things finally get interesting. A solid 8 ft to 10 ft easterly swell rolls in, with a period of 10 seconds – that’s moderate energy, and the combined energy readings are huge: 1430 on Tuesday morning and 1966 on Tuesday afternoon. That’s strong to very strong energy. The wind on Tuesday afternoon is a cross-offshore breeze from the east at 12 mph, keeping the faces clean. This is the standout window. Voodoo is an exposed reef, and while the east swell isn’t the optimum south direction for the spot, the size and power make it a serious proposition. This is big stuff – over 8 ft – so it’s strictly for experts. Beginners, stay on the beach. Tuesday afternoon is the pick, with clean conditions and 10 ft surf.
After that, the swell drops fast. Wednesday the 2nd of September still has 7 ft to 7 ft, but the wind turns onshore from the south-southwest and south-southeast, making it choppy. By Thursday the 3rd, it’s down to 4 ft to 5 ft with cross-onshore wind, and the energy drops to moderate levels (313 to 445). Friday the 4th of September shows a bit of a recovery with a south swell of 5 ft to 5 ft and a period of 8 to 9 seconds. The afternoon session on Friday has cross-offshore wind from the northeast at 6 mph, and the condition is described as “expect good surf conditions”. That’s your second best call, but it’s smaller and less powerful than the 1st.
So, the one true standout is the 1st of September, especially Tuesday afternoon. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not locked in. The rest of the time is a drought, broken by that one solid pulse. If you’re an expert, circle that date. If you’re not, give it a miss.
