The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down what’s heading to Aussie Pipe.

There’s a big stretch of nothing much worth paddling for early on. The first few days have some small, rideable waves but nothing special. The real action doesn’t get going until late July into early August.

First decent window: Sunday afternoon, July 19th. Aussie Pipe sees a clean 1.5m swell from the ENE with an 11-second period, combined energy of 659 (moderate). The wind is a light cross-off from the east at 6 mph, so the surface will be clean. Water temp is 64°, about 2° warmer than average for this time of year – just a touch above normal. This is a reef break for advanced surfers only. It’s inconsistent and often crowded, so expect company.

Monday the 20th keeps that same 1.5m ENE swell through the morning with a light cross-off, then by afternoon the wind shifts NE and strengthens to 16 mph, blowing clean offshore. That’ll tidy things up. Tuesday morning the 21st drops to 1.2m, still clean but with a shorter 10-second period, energy down to 341 (weak). By Tuesday afternoon it’s 1.1m with a moderate offshore – surfable but nothing to rave about.

Then a dry spell. From Wednesday the 22nd through Saturday the 26th, the wind is mostly onshore or cross-shore, and the swell is messy. Conditions are poor. Energy drops below 200 on some days, and the swell turns south with period dropping to 8-9 seconds – weak and crumbly. Skip it.

Sunday the 26th afternoon sees a bit more size – 1.6m from the south, but wind is light cross-shore, energy only 358. Still not great. Monday the 27th morning is interesting: a glassy 1.2m south swell, 10-second period, energy 276 (weak) – glassy is rare, so if you’re keen for a clean session, it’s a gamble. Sets will be soft.

The standout window? The weekend of August 1st and 2nd. Saturday the 1st morning has a 3.0m south swell, energy 1704 (strong), but the wind is onshore, so it’s messy. By Saturday afternoon the swell builds to 3.5m from the south, 10-second period, energy 2302 (very strong), with light cross-shore wind from the SE. That’s big, heavy, expert-only. Sunday the 2nd morning is still 3.0m from the SSE, light cross wind. The real gem is Sunday afternoon: 2.5m from the SSE, 10-second period, energy 1294 (strong), and the wind goes offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. That’s clean, solid, pumping. This is the best on offer in the whole 16 days – big, clean, and heavy. It’s over a week away, so some uncertainty, but circle it.

After that, Monday the 3rd gets hammered by fresh onshore winds at 22 mph and lumpy, sloppy surf.

So, bottom line: first week is mostly a write-off with a few small, cleanish windows. The real deal is the afternoon of Sunday, August 2nd – that’s your standout. Big, clean, heavy reef session.

Rusty.
