Table - best surf conditions forecast for Aussie pipe over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Aussie Pipe is a tough one. There’s a long, flat spell up front, and the first real glimmer of anything worthwhile doesn’t show up until nearly a week in. The water temp is sitting at 65°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s something.
The first few days are a write-off. We’ve got a weak, short-period windswell from the west, maxing out at a pathetic 4ft but with a period of only 4 seconds. The combined energy is a measly 83, and it’s all blown out by a fresh 19 mph cross-onshore wind. That’s not surf, that’s a washing machine. Monday through to Wednesday morning stay awful – tiny, choppy, and cross-onshore. The swell is just not there.
We finally see a pulse on Wednesday the 15th of July, but it’s a messy one. An 8ft southerly swell rolls in, but the period is a lackluster 7 seconds and the wind is onshore. The combined energy jumps to 547, but it’s all for nothing thanks to the wind. This is a beach break setup, so with that much wind and sloppy swell, it’d be more interesting for kite surfing than a paddle session.
The real standout, and the only one worth getting excited about, is Sunday the 19th of July. The morning is still marginal, but by the afternoon, things click. We’ve got a solid 8ft easterly groundswell with a proper 12-second period, giving us a combined energy of 1732. The wind swings light easterly at 6 mph, meaning clean, cross-off conditions. That’s the pick of the window. This is a reef break, so that long-period easterly swell should wrap in nicely and offer some proper shape. It’s an advanced wave, so it’s only for the experienced crew. Crowds are often here, so expect a few others with the same idea.
Monday the 20th of July holds similar potential: a 7ft easterly swell with a 10-second period, combined energy of 1024, and light cross-off winds. Clean again. Tuesday the 21st sees a drop in quality as the wind turns onshore again.
The final week is a slow fade. Wednesday the 22nd of July offers a brief moment of hope with 5ft easterly swell and glassy winds in the morning – that’s clean, but the swell is backing off, and the energy drops to 524. After that, it’s back to small, weak, and mostly onshore junk through to the end of the period.
So, to sum it up: the first 8 days are a bust. The only real window is Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th of July. If you’re keen, that’s your chance. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
