The Lowdown

G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've been combing through the local charts for Mollymook Beach. Let's be real—this 16-day window kicks off with a whole lot of nothing. The first recommendation doesn't even pop up until Thursday the 6th of August, so there's a solid gap from now until then where the surf is just rubbish. Don't bother paddling out Monday through Wednesday; it's flat and messy.

Things finally start to look up on Thursday morning the 6th. We've got a clean, glassy start with a 4ft southerly swell wrapping in. The combined energy is moderate (273), and while it's not huge, that glassy wind will make it feel like a million bucks. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. Thursday afternoon gets a bit more onshore, but the morning is the pick.

Friday the 7th offers another glassy morning with 3ft southerly swell, but the energy is a bit weaker (166). It's surfable but nothing to write home about.

The real standout? You're gonna want to circle Monday the 17th of August. That's a long way off, but it looks promising. We've got a solid 6ft southerly groundswell rolling in with a long period of 12 seconds, packing some serious punch—energy is sitting at 775. Monday morning is glassy, and the afternoon stays clean with a light cross-off breeze. This is expert-level stuff given the size and power, but for those who can handle it, this is the best session on offer. Tuesday the 18th holds similar energy (343) with 4ft of southerly swell, still clean and well worth a paddle.

The rest of the window is a mix of tiny, weak surf and onshore slop. The 12th of August has a weird spike of 7ft from the northeast, but it's a short-period windswell (7 seconds) with cross-on winds, making it a messy, marginal affair. Not recommended for paddle surfing, but if you're into kiting, that setup might be worth a look.

Bottom line: the first week is a write-off, but from the 6th you get some clean, small waves, with the 17th and 18th shaping up as the real deal. Keep an eye on those long-range forecasts, though—things can change.

Rusty.
