The Lowdown

Hey, Rusty here again, but I’ll run it through in feet and miles for you.

The window opens on Friday, 31 July, but things are pretty average. The water’s at 65°, which is a touch warmer than usual – not too wild.

Friday afternoon at Black Point is a pass. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the south, but the wind is onshore from the south at 9 mph, and it’s messy. The energy is moderate at 570, but the conditions are no good.

Saturday morning on 1 August is still meh, with a 5ft SSE swell and light cross-onshore wind. Saturday afternoon looks a little better. The swell drops to 4ft from the SSE, but the wind goes light cross-offshore from the northeast at 3 mph. It’s clean, energy is moderate at 372.

The best window is Sunday morning, 2 August. We’ve got a 5ft swell from the southeast with a nice 12-second period – proper groundswell. Wind is cross-offshore from the north at 9 mph, keeping it clean. The combined energy is a solid 769, which is moderate but strong. The swell direction matches the optimum for the spot, and the break is a point for advanced surfers. It can get crowded sometimes, so be ready. This is your session.

Sunday afternoon is still okay at 5ft, but the wind picks up.

From Monday the 3rd, the surf fades. Swells drop under 3ft, energy falls into the weak zone. There’s a long gap of several days with tiny, weak waves – not worth paddling out.

Thursday morning, 13 August, there’s a small spike. A 5ft swell from the southwest, but with a short 5-second period. The wind is glassy calm, and the energy is moderate at 208. It’s clean, but those waves won’t have much power.

After that, it’s flat. We’re talking 0.9ft waves and glassy conditions on the 14th and 15th, but that’s barely a ripple.

So, call it: Sunday morning, 2 August is your only real standout. The rest is pretty quiet, but you never know – forecasts can turn around.

Rusty.
