The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here.
First up, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag on the radar. The opening day, Sunday the 19th, kicks off with some promise, but then it gets a bit average through the middle of the week before a solid pulse arrives for the following weekend and into the first days of August.
Let’s start with Sunday morning at Depot Beach. It’s looking like a glassy start with the wind from the NW at only 3 mph. We’re looking at a clean 5 ft swell from the ENE, pulsing in at a nice 12-second period. The water is sitting at 63°F, which is about normal for the time of year, and the combined energy is a moderate 743. It’s a solid option for experienced surfers, but it’s fairly consistent which keeps hopes up.
The pattern then turns a bit messy. Sunday afternoon through Monday sees the wind swing onshore and the quality drops right off. The swell sticks around the 6 ft to 6 ft range but gets chopped up by cross-onshore breezes. Monday and Tuesday mornings, however, offer a reprieve. Tuesday the 21st is a real standout here – a glassy morning with no wind at all (0 mph) and a clean 4 ft swell from the ENE. The energy is a bit weaker at 423, but the conditions will be perfect for a long, clean session.
Wednesday the 22nd morning also looks good with a 4 ft swell and a clean offshore WNW breeze at 9 mph. The waves get smaller through the afternoon, dropping to 3 ft.
Thursday the 23rd brings a shift. The morning session sees a bigger 6 ft swell from the S, but it’s a short-period affected swell at only 7 seconds. The offshore wind stays clean, so experienced surfers might get some punchy, dumpy waves, but it’s not going to be the best quality. The energy is moderate at 606.
From there, the swell drops right off. Friday the 24th through Wednesday the 30th is a quiet spell. We’re looking at very small waves, mostly under 3 ft, with some clean but weak morning windows. The energy dips into double digits, like Saturday the 25th morning with a 3 ft swell and 204 energy, or Wednesday the 29th with just 76 energy from a tiny SSE swell. It’s a long, flat stretch.
Now, the real standout arrives on Saturday the 1st of August. After the long lull, a solid SSW groundswell pushes in. Saturday morning delivers a pumping 6 ft swell from the S with an 11-second period and a clean cross-offshore SW breeze at 9 mph. The combined energy is a very strong 713, suggesting plenty of power. This is the best bet of the entire outlook – a proper winter groundswell with clean conditions. Expect long lines and plenty of push. The water might be cool, but it’ll be worth it.
Sunday the 2nd of August keeps the run going with a glassy morning, the wind flat calm and a clean 5 ft S swell. It’s a perfect follow-up day for the hangover session.
So to sum it up: the next couple of days have some nice clean windows, but the bonafide standouts are absolutely Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd of August. Those are the days to circle on the calendar.
Keep your eyes on the horizon,
Rusty
