Table - best surf conditions forecast for Depot Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s in store for the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are looking pretty average, but we’ve got some serious juice coming in the second week. The water temp is sitting at 63° at Depot Beach, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
We kick off on Thursday afternoon, July 9th, with a small, weak 4ft SE swell (434 energy). It’s cross-shore and a bit messy, so it’s a real marginal call. Friday morning, July 10th, is your first real window of the week. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SE, and the wind goes glassy, meaning it’ll be clean. The energy is moderate (370). It’s a solid beginner-friendly size, but it’s not a stand-out for the whole period.
Saturday morning, July 11th, cleans up with a NNW cross-offshore breeze and a 3ft SE swell (258 energy). It’s small but fun for a longboard. The afternoon drops off. Sunday through Tuesday sees the swell bottom out completely, with tiny waves under 2ft and strong offshore winds. That’s a dead run from lunchtime Sunday right through to Tuesday afternoon.
Then Wednesday, July 15th, things get a bit of size but it’s ugly. A 6ft to 8ft S swell (286 to 473 energy) with a short, weak period of 6–7 seconds, and fresh, strong cross-shore winds. The ocean will be lumpy and messy. This is more of a kite-surfing kind of day than a paddle-surfing one.
Now, here’s where the real story is. Thursday, July 16th, through to Sunday, July 20th, is the big event. We’re talking serious groundswell. Thursday morning sees a 13ft SSE swell (2096 energy) with a light offshore wind. The swell is too big for beginners, pulling into expert-only territory. Friday morning, July 17th, is similar, with a 12ft SE swell (3239 energy) and light cross-offshore winds. Saturday morning, July 18th, is the standout: a massive 16ft SE swell (5407 energy) with a long period of 11 seconds, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. The water will be clean, but this is huge. Only for experts, and it’s packing a ton of energy. Sunday morning, July 19th, is also pumping with a 15ft SE swell (10876 energy) and light offshore winds. This is a very long period swell (12 seconds), so the waves will have plenty of power and shape, but the size means it’s outright dangerous for anyone but the best.
The energy drops a bit on Monday, July 20th, with an 8ft ESE swell (1754 energy) and cross-offshore winds, but it’s still a solid size. The tide could be a factor.
Tuesday, July 21st, is a nice reset. A 5ft ESE swell (629 energy) with a clean offshore wind from the WSW. That’s a good size for average surfers, and the conditions should be very clean. This is your best bet for the second week if the big stuff is too much.
Wednesday, July 22nd, drops to 3ft ESE (276 energy) with a clean cross-offshore breeze. Nice for a cruise. Thursday, July 23rd, picks up a bit with a 5ft S swell (374 energy) but the wind turns cross-shore, making it a bit lumpy.
Friday, July 24th, looks promising for the end of the run. A 6ft E swell (976 energy) with a light cross-offshore wind and a period of 10 seconds. That’s a solid, clean day with moderate energy.
Overall, the standout is Saturday morning, July 18th, if you’re an expert and want the biggest, cleanest swell of the period. For everyone else, Tuesday morning, July 21st, is the pick of the cleaner, more manageable days.
Rusty.
