Righto, mate, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for the next couple of weeks.
We've got one main spot on the radar: Depot Beach. The overall pattern looks like a slow start, a couple of promising days, then some serious size that'll be for the brave or the foolish only.
First up, Monday morning the 6th of July. Cloudy skies and a solid 8ft SSE swell, period of 10 seconds, with a cross-off wind. The combined energy is moderate (1030). This is proper advanced territory – too big for beginners. It’s clean, but the power is real. That morning window is the pick for the experienced crew. By the afternoon, it drops off into a messier cross-shore wind and questionable conditions, so get it early.
Tuesday the 7th keeps the size coming. Morning sees 8ft from the SE, still clean, but again, that's expert-only water. The afternoon gets even bigger – 10ft from the SE with a longer 11-second period – now we're talking serious energy (1969). The wave comment says it's too big for this break, so you'd want a bigger board and a lot of respect. The wind goes cross, creating a lumpy chop.
Wednesday the 8th is another chance for the advanced guys. Morning offers 8ft from the SE, clean with light winds. Still big, still demanding. Combined energy is over 1200 (1246). The afternoon drops to a more manageable 6ft, but the wind goes cross, so it'll have a bit of texture on it.
Now, for the average punter, Thursday the 9th is where you start getting interested. Morning is 5ft from the SSE, clean as a whistle. This is in the 'very good' zone. By the afternoon it gets glassy – zero wind – with 5ft from the SE. This is a standout window. Solid, clean waves for a good intermediate surfer. The water temp anomaly is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird going on.
Friday the 10th keeps the fun going with a glassy morning. 5ft from the SE with light offshore winds. Clean, fun-sized, and with a combined energy of 315 (weak). This is a great pick for a cruisy session. The afternoon gets ruined by a cross-onshore breeze.
Saturday the 11th is small but clean. 4ft from the SE in the morning, 3ft in the afternoon. Both clean, good for longboards or a learner. Sunday the 12th through Tuesday the 14th is a flat spell. You'll be waiting for Wednesday the 15th, but that's when the bomb sets arrive.
Wednesday the 15th morning: 10ft from the S, 10-second period. Combined energy is massive at 2689. The wave comment says it's too big for this break. This is for experts only. The wind is light and offshore, so it'll be clean, but deep, dangerous peaks. Afternoon gets a fresh cross-shore with 10ft – lumpy and heavy. Thursday the 16th is more of the same: 10ft in the morning, 8ft in the afternoon. All too big for most.
Friday the 17th drops to a more manageable 7ft from the SE, clean in the morning. Still a big swell, but the 'very good' comment suggests there are some excellent waves if you can handle the size. Combined energy is moderate to strong (881). Saturday the 18th looks like the real standout. Morning sees 6ft from the SE, clean, with a long 11-second period. This is a groundswell, and it's perfect for a point or reef. Clean, powerful lines. Afternoon is similar but a touch smaller at 5ft. This is the best of the lot.
After that, it fades away quickly. Sunday the 19th and beyond is small and weak, with nothing to get excited about until Tuesday the 21st, which shows 18ft from the S. That's a monster – combined energy of 6178 (very strong). Again, too big for this break. That's a big red flag.
If there was any significant swell with poor quality and strong winds, I'd say look at kiting, but this is mostly clean. The main takeaway: mark your calendar for Thursday the 9th afternoon and Saturday the 18th morning. Those are the true standouts for the everyday surfer.
Rusty.
