Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Depot Beach.
Right off the bat, the next few days are a bit of a write-off. Friday and Saturday morning have a bit of swell, but the quality is poor or just ordinary. Sunday morning, though, gets interesting. We’ve got a solid 8ft southerly swell rolling in, with a moderate cross-off breeze. The combined energy is pumping at (1228). This is a standout for the near term, but keep in mind it’s a fairly consistent spot, and this is a proper push of energy. For the more experienced crew, Monday morning (July 6th) cleans up nicely – 7ft from the SSE with a tidy cross-off wind and clean conditions. Energy is still strong at (802). That’s your best bet for the first week.
Now, water temp is sitting at 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Nothing wild, but you’ll notice it’s a little more comfortable than usual.
Moving into the middle of the week, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings (July 7th & 8th) offer clean 5ft to 6ft swells with light offshore or cross-off winds. Good, solid surf for the average surfer, nothing too hectic. The energy drops off a bit after that, with a few smaller days (2ft to 3ft) through Friday and Saturday (July 10th & 11th) that are really only worth it if you’re desperate for a paddle.
Then there’s a big gap: from Sunday the 12th through to Tuesday the 14th, the surf is either tiny or messy. The real excitement comes back on Monday the 13th of July. Early doors, we’ve got an 8ft southerly swell with a gentle offshore breeze – that is excellent, serious stuff. The combined energy is huge at (1157). This is a true standout for the experienced surfers, though the swell size is pushing into expert territory. Keep an eye on that one.
The second week brings more cautious optimism. Thursday the 16th is a bit messy, but Friday the 17th of July has a massive 13ft southerly swell – (2241) energy – with a cross-off breeze. That is a monster, but it’s likely too big for this break. The same goes for Saturday the 18th, with a 15ft SSE swell (5545) and glassy conditions. For the big-wave chargers, that’s a window, but for most of us, it’s a day to watch from the sand.
Overall, the best windows for clean, ridable surf are Monday the 6th and Monday the 13th. The first is your best all-rounder; the second is for the brave.
Rusty.
