The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down. The only break in the picture is Depot Beach, and it’s a real rollercoaster over the next 16 days.
Water temp is about 63°F, just a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing wild, but you’ll notice it.
The week starts off flat. From Wednesday the 19th through Sunday the 23rd, the swell is tiny – 0.4ft to 0.6ft at best, with some glassy mornings on Saturday and Sunday. But the energy is weak, readings between 14 and 67 (weak). Not worth suiting up.
Monday the 24th morning sees a little bump: 0.9ft from the NE, 6 seconds, clean with a light cross-off breeze, but still weak energy at 86. Surfable, but barely.
Tuesday the 25th morning brings 1ft from the NE, period 7 seconds, energy at 174 (moderate). Still clean, but nothing special. Tuesday afternoon pushes to 2ft from the ENE with 319 energy (moderate), but only marginal.
Now, Wednesday the 26th afternoon gets big: 3ft from the S at 9 seconds, with a massive 1576 (strong energy). But the wind is a fresh cross-on from the S at 35 km/h, and this is a beach break. That combo is more for kite surfers than paddle surfers – the swell is too big and the wind is messy.
Thursday the 27th morning is the real standout. 2ft from the SSE, period 10 seconds, with a light cross-off breeze from the SSW at 5 km/h. Energy at 861 (moderate to strong). Clean, solid, and the swell direction matches the break’s best exposure from the SE. This is the session to aim for – it’s pushing into expert territory at 2ft, but if you’ve got the skills, it’s on.
Friday the 28th morning is still decent: 1ft from the SE, 9 seconds, glassy offshore wind from the WNW, energy at 358 (moderate). Clean and fun.
Saturday the 29th sees another big pulse: 3ft from the S, period 8 seconds, but strong cross-off wind from the SW at 25–30 km/h. Energy readings are 1235 and 1067 (strong). Too big for this break – only for the hardcore crew.
Sunday the 30th morning drops to 2ft from the SSE, 8 seconds, with a light cross-off wind. Energy at 597 (moderate). Clean but short period.
Monday the 31st morning is 1ft from the SSE, clean, energy at 457 (moderate). Surfable.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning is another highlight. 1ft from the SE, period 11 seconds, glassy conditions with a light southerly breeze. Energy at 528 (moderate). That longer period means better shape and more push – a really nice morning.
After that, it fades. Wednesday the 2nd morning is 0.7ft from the SE, glassy but weak (95 energy). The rest of the first week of September looks flat and choppy.
So, the best bet is Thursday the 27th morning – that’s your window. Tuesday the 1st of September morning is also a good one for cleaner, longer-period waves. The rest is either too small, too big, or too windy.
Rusty.
