The Lowdown
Alright folks, this is Rusty comin' at ya from the beach. We've got a mixed bag of surf on the horizon for Depot Beach, with a bit of a slow start but some real gems to look forward to. Let's get into it.
First thing's first, the water's sitting at a pretty average 63°F for this time of year, so nothing unusual there. The first few days are a write-off, honestly. You've got a tiny 0.7ft to 1.0ft south swell on Tuesday, July 14th, with nothing in it. The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, but there's just no wave energy to work with. The combined energy is a measly 13 to 22 (weak energy). We're waiting.
The real story starts to turn on Wednesday morning, July 15th. We get a pulse of 6ft southerly swell, but it's short period at 8 seconds, so it's a bit of a bumpy, windswell feel. The combined energy jumps to 735 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light offshore from the WSW, so it'll be clean. This is solid for advanced surfers, but at 6ft, it's a bit much for beginners. Don't get too excited for the afternoon, as the wind swings onshore and shuts it down.
We then have a few days of smaller, cleaner surf from Thursday the 16th through Saturday the 18th, with waves around 2ft to 5ft. The wind is mostly light and cross-off or glassy, so it's rideable but nothing to write home about. The combined energy sits in the low 60s to 380 range (weak to moderate wave energy).
Now, here's where it gets interesting. Sunday morning, July 19th, a new swell from the ENE starts to fill in. By Sunday afternoon, we're looking at 4ft from the ENE at 10 seconds, with glassy conditions and combined energy at 460 (moderate wave energy). This is a very tidy wave.
But the standout, the one you're gonna want to circle on your calendar, is Monday morning, July 20th. We've got a 5ft ENE swell at 10 seconds, with glassy, glassy conditions. The combined energy hits 635 (moderate wave energy). The wind is a light NNW, virtually nothing. This is going to be clean, fun, and punchy. A proper morning session. The afternoon stays big but gets a bit lumpy with a cross-on wind.
The quality keeps rolling through the next week. From Tuesday, July 21st, through to Sunday, July 26th, we have a consistent run of ENE swell, mostly around 4ft to 6ft, with long periods of 10 to 12 seconds. This is proper groundswell. The real highlight in that stretch is Thursday morning, July 23rd, with a 6ft ENE swell at a very long 12 seconds. The combined energy is a strong 897 (moderate wave energy), and it's clean with a light cross-off wind. That's a powerful, heavy wave for experienced surfers only. It's going to be a freight train on the sets.
After that, the swell slowly eases into the final days of July and the start of August, with waves around 3ft to 4ft from the ENE, still holding some period. The wind stays mostly offshore or cross-off, so the quality remains good for a solid surf. The last few days on the 28th and 29th see the swell drop a bit, but there's still a clean 3ft wave to be had.
So, to sum it up: the first half of this week is a wash. The one true standout is Monday morning, July 20th, for the perfect combo of size, period, and glassy conditions. Don't sleep on Thursday morning, July 23rd, either, for the bigger, more powerful groundswell. Get out there and get some.
Rusty.
