The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, looking at the conditions for the next couple of weeks.

It’s looking like a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real windows of opportunity if you time it right. The main action is coming from the south and southeast, and we’ve got a decent run of knee-to-chest high swell to start things off. The water temp is sitting at 63°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The first real standout is Saturday morning, August 1st at Bendalong Beach. We’ve got a clean 5 ft swell rolling in from the SSE, and the wind is absolutely glassy. It doesn’t get much better than that for conditions. The energy is moderate (336), and the water will be like a mirror. This is the session to circle on the calendar. That SSE direction is also right in the sweet spot for this break.

Saturday afternoon the wind swings around and it gets a bit messy, so the morning is the clear winner.

Sunday morning, August 2nd, sees a bigger push of swell. The wave height bumps up to 5 ft from the SSE, and the period jumps to 12 seconds, which is proper groundswell. The energy is cranking (701), but the wind is cross-shore. It won’t be as clean as Saturday, but there’s a lot more power in the water. This one is for the experienced crew; the size and longer period will make it a bit more demanding on the paddle out and the takeoff.

Monday morning, August 3rd, the swell drops off fast. It’s only 3 ft with clean offshore NW wind, but it’s just not got the size to get excited about. The energy is weak (152). The afternoon is even smaller.

There’s a quiet spell for a few days after that, with tiny waves and mostly poor conditions. The swell tries to pick up again on Wednesday morning, August 5th, with a 4 ft S swell and clean offshore wind. That’s a nice little surprise, but it’s not the stand-out of the first week.

The second week is a real gamble. Tuesday afternoon, August 11th, we get a late pulse of 3 ft from the south with a moderate offshore wind, but it’s a long way out and the forecasts are less certain. The energy is still moderate (243), so it’s worth keeping an eye on, but it’s not a lock.

After that, the swell fades right out, with only tiny, weak waves on offer through the middle of August. If you’re a beginner, the sessions on Saturday morning and Wednesday morning (Aug 1 & 5) are the best bet, as the swell is under 5 ft. For the experts, Sunday morning (Aug 2) has the power.

Rusty.
