The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty.
Right off the bat, I’ll be straight with you: we’re looking at a long, dry spell before anything worth paddling out for shows up. The whole first week and a half is pretty much a write-off. There’s just no push in the water – it’s all small, weak, and messy. We’re talking flat spells and tiny dribbles with a few waves around 2 to 2 feet, and the swell energy is barely registering, in the low single or double digits at times.
You’re going to want to find something else to do for a while. We’ve got a solid ten days of nothing on offer at Plantation Point. It’s not until the tail end of the month that things finally start to wake up. The winds are all over the place too, so even the little pulses that do come through are getting chopped up. I wouldn’t bother with it.
Finally, on the 28th of August, there’s a bit of a lift. Swell pushes up to 4 to 5 feet with the energy jumping to 174 and then 238 in the arvo. It’s still not great, with a bit of cross-shore wind, but it’s a sign of life. Then the 29th looks better, with a clean 7 foot swell out of the SSE in the morning. The energy is up to 728 too, so there’s some push behind it. That’s about as good as it gets for a while, and it’s still only for the more experienced crew.
Now, for the real standout – and I mean the one bright light in this whole 16-day slog – is the 31st of August into the 1st of September. The swell arrives proper, with 15 feet of ESE groundswell and periods around 11 seconds. The energy is pumping, just massive numbers in the thousands, with 5659 on Monday morning. That is a serious amount of water moving. However, keep in mind this is big. Over 8 feet, and this is expert territory only. This kind of long-period groundswell (11 seconds) can also be a bit tricky at a point break, but it will have plenty of shape.
The winds are favorable too, with fresh offshore breezes keeping it clean. The morning of the 1st of September looks best with a gentler offshore and clean conditions. The break is inconsistent, so be prepared to wait for sets, but when they come, they’ll be worth it. Just be aware that it’s a big, powerful swell. This is not a day for the faint of heart. The rest of the second week stays big, with 10 foot swells, but the winds get a bit stronger, making it more challenging.
Don’t get too excited about the long-range stuff, though – forecasts that far out are promising, but they can change. But for now, the end of the month and the very start of September is where you want to be. The early part of the window is a total bust, so plan around the big push.
Rusty.
