The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta say, it’s a pretty quiet picture for a while. There’s a real gap in the action. The first proper surf I can see is a very small window on Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, but it’s not much to write home about.
Wednesday July 15th – We get a quick pulse of 6ft south swell at 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period, wind-affected wave. The wind is a cross-off from the south at 9 mph, which is okay, but the combined energy is only moderate at 693. The water is sitting at 64°, which is about average for this time of year. It’s surfable, but the conditions are very ordinary. Honestly, not a standout.
Thursday July 16th – The morning brings a cleaner shot with offshore winds from the SSW at 12 mph, and a 5ft south swell, period 8 seconds. The energy drops to 239, so it’s a weak, short-period wave. The afternoon turns a bit ugly with the wind swinging cross-off and the swell bumping up to 5ft but with a 7-second period and poor conditions. Nothing to get excited about.
Friday July 17th to Sunday July 19th – This is a real dead zone. The swell drops to 1.0ft on Friday, and the energy is weak (46 to 87). Saturday is a bit bigger with a 2ft swell, but the period is a messy 7 to 10 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (107 to 123), but it’s still poor surf. Sunday morning July 19th is the one and only highlight in this whole period. The wind goes glassy (3 mph from the WSW), and we get a 4ft ENE swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy jumps to 437, which is moderate but promising. The swell direction is ENE, which is not the optimum SE direction for Plantation Point, but the glassy conditions will make the most of what’s there. This is the best bet for a clean, fun session, but it’s still a pretty small wave. Crowds are sometimes a factor here, so you might have company.
Monday July 20th to Sunday July 26th – It’s a long, flat, or poor stretch. The swell is mostly 3ft to 5ft, but the wind is almost always onshore, cross-on, or just messy. The energy is moderate (100 to 644), but the wave quality is consistently poor. There is a clean morning on Saturday July 25th with offshore winds and a 2ft ENE swell, but it’s weak. The afternoon of the 25th brings a 1ft south swell with a very long period of 19 seconds, but the energy is weak (174) and the wave is tiny. A long period swell like that is best for a point break like this, but at 1ft, it’s just not enough.
Monday July 27th – More of the same. Poor surf with offshore winds, but the swell is 2ft or less.
Tuesday July 28th – Now we’re talking. A solid 7ft south swell rolls in on the morning, period 9 seconds, with a clean offshore wind from the SSW at 12 mph. The combined energy is strong at 750. This is a big wave for this spot. The afternoon builds to 8ft at 9 seconds, with even stronger offshore winds (16 mph) and energy hitting 992. At 8ft, this is definitely expert territory – too big for beginners. The swell direction is S, which is a good match for the break. This is the real standout of the whole outlook, but it’s a long way out – a full week and a half away. The forecast is promising, but less certain that far out.
Wednesday July 29th to Thursday July 30th – The swell drops back to 5ft to 5ft, with a mix of short and long periods (8 to 12 seconds). The wind is light and cross-off, so conditions should be clean. The energy is moderate to strong (440 to 730). Thursday afternoon looks particularly nice with a 5ft, 12-second swell and glassy wind from the SE. The wave direction is from the S, which is good.
So, to sum it up: The first week is a write-off. You’ve got a long gap of poor or tiny surf until Sunday morning July 19th, which is your best bet for a clean, if small, wave. The real standout, the one that gets the pulse going, is the big swell arriving on Tuesday July 28th. That’s a solid 7ft to 8ft south swell with offshore winds, but it’s for experts only. For the rest, it’s mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
