The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next two weeks at Callala are a tough watch. The finder’s got nothing but “poor surf conditions” for the first fifteen days, so we’re looking at a real dry spell. There’s basically no surf worth paddling out for from now until the 18th of August. That’s a long, flat gap. It’s a reef break that rarely breaks anyway, so this kind of blank run is pretty normal for the area. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.

Then, right at the tail end of the outlook, on Tuesday the 18th of August, we finally get a pulse. The morning shows a 7.5ft swell from the south, with a period of 10 seconds, and combined energy of 998 (moderate), but it’s cross-onshore with a light breeze. That’s a bit of a bummer. The afternoon builds to 7.9ft from the south, 9-second period, and energy jumps to 1577 (strong), but it’s still cross-onshore. That’s a lot of water for Callala – over 8ft makes it strictly for experts only. The wind is light, but coming from the wrong direction, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy. The swell direction is SSE, and the optimum for this spot is SSE, so it’s hitting the right angle, but the quality is questionable. The water temp is about 1.0° warmer than average for this time of year, sitting around 64.4°, which is notable but not wild. For the more experienced crew, the Tuesday afternoon might offer a few heavy, powerful sets, but don’t expect perfection. It’s a last-minute chance, not a standout.

Short Range Forecast

Mostly dry. Very mild (max 18°C on Wed afternoon, min 8°C on Tue night). Wind will be generally light.

Days 5-7 Weather Summary

Some drizzle, heaviest during Sun afternoon. Very mild (max 18°C on Sun morning, min 8°C on Thu night). Wind will be generally light.
