The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here.

Look, I’ve got to be straight with you: the next week to ten days is proper flat out there. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing, with clean but tiny leftovers that won’t even get you wet properly. The swell energy is weak, in the single digits most sessions, and the odd pulse of 3ft to 3ft is just too gutless to do anything with. We do see a bit of life on Saturday the 8th with a 3ft S swell at 7 seconds and light winds, but the energy reading is only 86, so it’s not worth paddling out for. There’s a long stretch there, about nine days, where I wouldn’t bother waxing up.

The real story, and the one you’ve been waiting for, fires up on Friday the 14th. The swell kicks to a solid 10ft from the SSE with a period of 8 seconds. That’s a big jump and it’s going to be a handful. The combined energy jumps into the four-digit club at 990, so it’s strong, but the wind is a cross-on, making it messy. It’s a beach-and-reef setup, so with this much power and chop, it might be more interesting for the kite crew than for us paddle surfers.

But Saturday the 15th is the standout. The swell jumps to a serious 16ft from the SSE, with a period of 11 seconds, and the energy reading goes through the roof at 5930. That’s very strong. The morning is glassy, just a slight air, and it’s going to be big and powerful. This is a genuine groundswell, and while the long period is going to make it a bit straight at the beach breaks, it’s a proper day for the experienced crew. This is not for beginners – well over 8ft – this is expert territory only. The afternoon picks up a light cross-on, and the energy jumps to 6757, but the tide might play games with you.

Sunday the 16th is still significant, with a 13ft SE swell at 11 seconds, energy at 4118, and clean morning conditions with light cross-off winds. It’s still big and gnarly, but the wind stays manageable until the afternoon sea breeze kicks in. These two days are the ones.

After that, it just drops off a cliff back to nothing by Monday the 17th. So, if you’re an expert, circle the 15th on the calendar – that’s the one to be out there for. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a good hood is still your friend.

It’s a long wait, but when it comes, it comes in with a roar.

Rusty.
