The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s break down Tallebudgera for the next couple of weeks. Just the breakwater to talk about.
The start is quiet. First few days you’re better off stayin’ home. Water temp’s about 68°F, which is normal for this time of year.
Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th are a total mess. Swell runs 5 to 6ft from the SE and ESE, but the cross-onshore wind stirs it up real bad. Wave energy’s moderate but it’s all chop.
Friday the 21st morning, we get a breather. Swell drops to 3ft from the ESE, period’s short at 7 seconds, but the wind’s glassy. That’s clean but tiny – good for a longboard. Wave energy is weak.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd stay small at 3ft, but we get glassy starts and some cross-off breeze. Still, it’s very ordinary. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are more of the same.
Wednesday the 26th is a sneaky good one. Swell’s only 3ft, but a W offshore wind at 9 mph blows all day, keeping the breakwater clean. Wave energy is weak (99) but the conditions are perfect for what’s there.
Thursday the 27th morning goes glassy with 4ft swell from the S, 8 seconds. Wave energy climbs to moderate (266). Decent, short-period fun for a morning.
Now, the big one. Sunday, 30th of August. That’s the day. Early morning we get 7ft from the SSE, 9 seconds, with a light cross-offshore from the SW at 6 mph. Wave energy hits 736, almost strong. The surf should be very good – clean, punchy, and proper. The morning is your prime window.
Monday the 31st of August is powerful but rough. Swell goes to 8ft from the SSE, 10 seconds, and wave energy jumps to a serious 1109. That’s strong, but the cross-shore wind at 16 mph makes it bumpy. Expert-only territory.
From Tuesday the 1st of September onwards, it’s back to small and messy. Not much to get excited about.
So, if you’ve got one day to chase, make it the morning of Sunday, 30th August. Everything else is just small, clean windows here and there.
Rusty out.
