The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here with the skinny on the local surf scene. I've got the numbers for you in feet, miles per hour, and Fahrenheit, and I'm calling it as I see it.
Right off the bat, from Monday the 17th of August, we're stuck in a real rough patch at Tallebudgera. The swell is running around 7 to 7ft from the SE and ESE, with a short, weak period of just 7 to 8 seconds. The problem is the wind is howling from the same direction at 15 to 16 mph, turning the whole place into a choppy, onshore mess. The combined swell energy (514 on Monday morning) is moderate, but it's all just slop for a paddle.
From the 22nd of August right through to the 1st of September, it's a major dry spell. The swell collapses below 4ft, and the wind goes light or swings around. We do get a clean window on Tuesday the 25th morning with a light offshore from the WSW at 6 mph and a clean 3ft wave from the ENE. It's weak with low energy (87), but it's the cleanest we'll see. There's another clean morning on Saturday the 24th with a 0.6ft wave from the south and a 6 mph cross-offshore, but that's barely a ripple.
The only real pulse of energy comes late in the piece on Sunday the 30th of August. The afternoon bump brings a 4ft, 10-second SSE swell, with moderate energy reading of 304. The wind is a light, cross-onshore breeze from the SE, so it's not perfect, but it’s the biggest the swell's been in a while.
Water temp check: On the 17th, the water is 68°F, which is 1°F cooler than average. Nothing crazy, just a bit nippy.
Honestly, the only session worth a look is Tuesday the 25th morning if you're desperate for a clean, small wave. It's an ordinary day on an ordinary break. For the rest, the bigger, windier days might be more for the kite surfers than the paddle crew.
This is a long, frustrating stretch of flat-to-ugly conditions. It doesn't stay this bad forever, but for now, it's a real test of patience. Hang in there.
Rusty.
