The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk Tallebudgera. This is a breakwater setup, advanced only, fairly consistent but with a tricky swell window. Water temp is sitting at 70°, dead on average for this time of year – nothing unusual there. The first few days are a total write-off: Sunday July 19 through Tuesday July 21, you’re looking at big swell – 16ft down to 6ft – but it’s hammered by strong cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, rain showers, and messy chop. Combined wave energy is massive but ugly: 6413 on Sunday morning, dropping to 762 by Tuesday arvo. Not a paddle, not even a kite session worth the drive.
Then Wednesday July 22 brings a brief window of hope. Morning and afternoon both go glassy – light air or calm, with a 5ft and 5ft swell from the east, period 9 seconds. Combined energy is moderate at 442 and 368. The swell direction isn’t bang-on the optimum SSE, but glassy conditions make it clean and rideable. This is the standout of the whole outlook. Expect some crowds – it’s often busy here. For an advanced surfer, this is the best on offer. Thursday July 23 morning stays glassy but the swell drops to 4ft, period 8 seconds – surfable but ordinary. By afternoon the cross-onshore ruins it.
Friday July 24 and Saturday July 25 see a bump in swell again (7ft to 4ft) but the wind is messy – cross-shore, cross-on, or cross-off. Saturday morning has a clean cross-off with small 4ft, but it’s thin. The rest of the week into early August is tiny – mostly under 3ft, with only occasional clean windows like Wednesday July 29 morning (2ft, clean cross-off) and Thursday July 30 offshore but wave height barely 1ft. Combined energy drops to two-digit numbers – weak. Not worth the drive unless you’re desperate for a longboard in the lake-like conditions.
Overall, the only real chance for a decent wave is Wednesday July 22. After that, it’s a long stretch of small, weak, or windy surf through to the end of the 16-day window. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
