The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, the next couple of weeks for the Tallebudgera area are a real mixed bag, and you’ll need to be patient. There’s a window of some serious size early on, but it’s not for everyone. After that, things drop right off for a long stretch before a bit of life returns towards the end of the month and into August. Here’s how it shakes out.
The big story kicks off this Saturday the 18th of July. The swell is pumping, with 12ft to 13ft waves rolling in from the SSE and S. The combined swell energy is absolutely thumping, hitting 1641 on Saturday morning and roaring up to 3818 by the afternoon. That’s a whole lot of ocean moving and you’ll feel it. The wind is a cross-offshore breeze, so the face of the wave should be clean. But I’ve gotta be straight with you – for a breakwater setup like Tallebudgera, this is too big for most. We’re talking expert-only territory here. The swell period is 8 to 9 seconds, so it’s not the cleanest groundswell, but with that much water moving, only the most experienced should even think about paddling out. Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 21st sees the swell still up – around 12ft to 7ft – but the wind swings cross-onshore and it gets lumpy. Not worth the fight.
Then we hit a flat patch. From Wednesday the 22nd of July, the swell drops to 5ft and below, and for the next week or so, the combined energy is mostly below 250. It’s a real quiet run with wind often onshore or cross-shore, making for choppy, messy conditions. The water’s at a pretty typical 70°F for this time of year, so no surprises there. You’ll struggle to find anything rideable through until the end of the month.
Now, there is a glimmer of hope. On Thursday the 30th of July, we see a small swell from the SSE at 4ft, with a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy is a modest 269. The real kicker is the morning wind – light and blowing cross-offshore – keeping the surf clean. It’s not a big day, but if you’re itching for a paddle, this is your best chance in a while. The following morning, Friday the 31st of July, holds similar potential with 5ft SSE swell and a clean cross-offshore breeze. Further out into the first of August, there’s a bit more size around 6ft but with that same clean wind profile. These later days don’t look like world-beaters, but in a forecast that’s mostly flat, they’re the ones to circle. Remember, this long-range stuff is promising but not locked in yet.
So, if you’re an expert looking for a pump on the 18th, be careful out there. For the rest of us, mark down Thursday the 30th of July for a clean, smaller session. Stay patient.
Rusty.
