The Lowdown
Alright folks, let's talk about Tallebudgera. This is a breakwater spot for the advanced crew, and it’s fairly consistent, but we’re in for a long, dry stretch in the lineup.
The 16-day outlook is a bit of a tough one. There's a tiny window of clean surf right at the start, and then a massive gap of poor conditions before we see another clean shot. It's a waiting game.
Let's start with Saturday the 22nd. We’ve got a small 3ft swell from the ENE with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 109. That afternoon session is the gold in this forecast. The morning has a light WNW breeze at 6 mph, which is offshore, but the afternoon goes completely glassy with only a 3 mph breeze from the WSW. The wave height is a clean, manageable 3ft. The water temp is 69°, which is about what you'd expect this time of year. It's small, it's clean, and for a skilled surfer, that is a window.
From Sunday the 23rd all the way to Monday the 1st of September, it's a desert. The winds are all sorts of wrong: cross-on, cross-shore, and choppy. The swell height bounces around 3ft to 4ft, but the report calls it poor conditions. The combined energy does get up into the 100s and 200s, but it's all for nothing with that wind. You'll get a little clean-up on the morning of Thursday the 28th with glassy 3ft waves, but it's gone by afternoon. A long, frustrating gap.
Now, for the next real highlight: Tuesday morning, September the 1st. The wind is from the NNW at 6 mph, giving us a lovely cross-offshore breeze. The swell is a small 3ft from the E with an 8-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 175. The waves are surfable, and with that clean surface, it’s a much better bet than everything else in that second week. The swell direction is just shy of the ideal, but clean conditions make it worthwhile.
The rest of that second week into early September is the same old story. The swell period gets longer, hitting 10 seconds by the 2nd, but the wind always finds a way to mess it up, leaving us with bumpy, choppy faces.
If you're looking for a paddle, the two standouts are clear. Saturday afternoon, the 22nd of August for the glassy 3ft conditions, and Tuesday morning, the 1st of September, for the clean, small session. Everything else in this 16-day run is best left for the kites or a day off. Unless you love choppy water, steer clear.
