The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with ya – the next 16 days at Tallebudgera are shaping up as a real mixed bag, and for the most part, a frustrating one. The water’s sitting at 69°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first real chance to paddle out doesn’t even show up until Thursday, July 16. Before that, Wednesday the 15th is a total write-off – tiny, wind-affected slop with a combined swell energy of just 34 (weak), and winds are all over it. Not worth getting wet.
Thursday morning, July 16, things get tricky. Swell jumps to 10 ft from the SSE, period 9 seconds, and the energy is pumping at 1343 (moderate to strong). But the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. However, Thursday afternoon is where we see the only real standout of the whole outlook. The swell hits 12 ft from the SSE, energy cranking at 1755 (strong), and the wind goes cross-offshore, turning the lineup clean. The swell’s over 8 ft, so this is strictly for the advanced crew – beginners will be out of their depth. The SSE direction is a sweet spot for this breakwater, matching the optimum swell direction, and with that clean wind, the quality will be there. This is the best session on offer, no question.
Friday, July 17, through to the end of next week, is a grim run. We’re talking lumpy cross-chop, strong cross-onshore winds, and giant, messy swell. Saturday, July 18, sees 13 ft to 16 ft with energy values up to 4807 (very strong), but the wind is a strong cross-shore mess. It’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. Sunday and Monday keep that same pattern – big, ugly, and blown out. There’s a solid 4-day gap with no real recommendations here.
Things start to drop off from Tuesday, July 22, with swell easing back under 7 ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore, so it’s still choppy and poor. There’s a brief moment on Thursday, July 23, where the swell is 5 ft from the east, period 9 seconds, and the wind is light cross-shore, but the conditions are still marginal. The energy is down to 391 (weak), so not much to get excited about.
The end of the outlook, from July 26 through 30, offers a few sessions with 5 ft to 6 ft swell and some cross-offshore winds, which will clean things up. The combined energy is weak to moderate (292 to 474), and the wave period is short (6-7 seconds), so it’ll be a bit soft and slow. It’s a slight improvement, but nothing that’ll blow your mind.
To wrap it up: Thursday afternoon, July 16, is your one guaranteed standout – big, clean, and powerful for experts. Everything else is a grind. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
