Table - best surf conditions forecast for Trapdoors over the next 16 days.
G’day, this is Rusty. Let’s get into it.
Alright, straight up – the next week and a half is a bit of a mixed bag for Trapdoors. There’s some size coming, but the wind’s going to be a problem for a lot of it. The real standout is definitely Sunday the 19th, early morning. That’s the one you want to circle.
We start off Monday the 13th with a tiny 2ft ESE swell and glassy conditions in the morning, but it’s so small and weak (energy 79) it’s barely worth a paddle. By the afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it’s rubbish. Tuesday the 14th is even smaller – 0.7ft and 1.0ft – nothing to write home about. Wednesday the 15th has a weird combo: morning is tiny, then the afternoon jumps to 6ft from the SSE, but with a 30 km/h cross-offshore wind and a short, weak 7-second period (energy 392). It’s messy and powerful in a bad way. Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th stay in that 5ft to 7ft range, but the wind is still cross-off and strong, and the period is short – it’s a struggle. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Now, Saturday the 18th shows some promise with 5ft from the E, 8-second period, and moderate energy (500-502), but the scores are still marginal. It’s clean, but it’s not firing.
The big one is Sunday the 19th. Early morning, we’ve got an 8ft ESE swell with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is a massive 1863 – that’s proper strong. It’s clean, with a gentle cross-off breeze. The file says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, and that’s spot on – 8ft is expert territory. The swell direction is from the ESE, which is close to the optimum SE swell direction for this point/river setup. This is the best on offer, no question. Expect crowds possible, as it’s sometimes crowded here.
Monday the 20th holds decent with 6ft from the E, period bumping to 10 seconds, and a lighter offshore wind in the morning (energy 734). That’s a good session, but not as standout as Sunday. Tuesday the 21st is smaller at 5ft, still clean in the morning. From Wednesday the 22nd through to Monday the 27th, the swell drops to around 3ft to 4ft, with periods between 9 and 12 seconds. The wind is light and often cross-off or glassy on the mornings, making for clean but small waves. The energy is moderate (200-300 range). Nothing to rush for, but a few fun glassy sessions on the 23rd and 24th mornings.
The last couple of days, into the 28th, the swell fades right down to 2ft with a longer 11-second period, but the wind is a strong offshore (25 km/h) – it’s clean but tiny, energy dropped to 62.
So, to sum it up: the best wave of the whole 16-day window is without a doubt early Sunday morning, the 19th of July. That’s your big, clean, expert-level swell. After that, Monday the 20th morning is a solid backup. The rest is mostly small, clean, and fun for a longboard or a morning dip, but nothing to get too amped about.
Rusty.
