Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s on the cards for Trapdoors. This is a point/river setup, exposed to the swell, and its best direction is from the southeast. It’s an advanced wave, so know what you’re doing before you paddle out.
The week starts a little ordinary, but there is a standout window coming up that’s got my attention. We’ve got a solid run of promising surf, though there are a few days you'll want to sit out.
Right off the bat, Saturday morning, July 4th, is our first real look. We’ve got a clean 4.6ft swell from the south with a light cross-off breeze. The wave energy is moderate (423), making for a fun session, though the swell period is short at 8 seconds, so it’ll be a bit on the weaker side. Things go flat and messy in the afternoon as the swell drops to 2.6ft, so make the most of the morning.
Sunday morning, July 5th, cleans up nicely with a moderate offshore wind from the SSW and a 3.3ft south swell. It’s clean and rideable. The afternoon sees the wind pick up hard to 19 mph and the swell jumps to 6.6ft with 534 wave energy (moderate), but it’s a marginal call with those strong cross-off winds.
Monday, July 6th, the swell keeps building. Morning sees 8.2ft from the SSE with a moderate cross-off wind. The wave energy is climbing to 944 (moderate). This is pushing into expert territory for size. By afternoon, we’re at 7.2ft and 1077 (moderate energy), but the same cross-off wind keeps it from being pristine. Tuesday, July 7th, the swell hits a peak at 9.8ft in the morning, with energy at 2850 (strong), but those cross-off winds and the size mean it’s only for the most experienced.
Now, here’s the standout: Wednesday morning, July 8th. This is the one. We’ve got a solid 9.8ft swell from the SSE, a long period of 11 seconds, and a moderate offshore wind from the SSW. The wave energy is cranking at 3420 (very strong), and the forecast calls for “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers.” The offshore wind will groom this groundswell into clean, powerful lines at the river mouth. This is not for beginners, but for those who can handle it, it’s going to be special. The afternoon drops slightly to 7.9ft but still has that long period, though the wind swings cross-off.
Thursday, July 9th, the swell holds at 8.2ft in the morning with 2054 energy, and a clean cross-off breeze. Good, but a step down from Wednesday. Friday, July 10th, we see the swell ease to 6.6ft with a longer 11-second period and a gentle cross-off breeze. Wave energy is 909, and the description says “expect very good surf conditions.” It’s a solid morning session.
Saturday, July 11th, morning has a clean 5.9ft south swell with a 6 mph offshore wind and 1073 (moderate energy). This is another very good window for experienced surfers, but it’s not quite the peak of Wednesday.
From here, the surf gets smaller and less consistent. Sunday, July 12th, drops to 3.0ft, and the wind turns onshore in the afternoon, making it a no-go. Monday, July 13th, is tiny at 2.3ft, though the afternoon goes glassy. Tuesday, July 14th, is flat and glassy in the morning with a 3.0ft 7-second swell, but the energy is weak at 106.
We get another pulse of long-period swell on Thursday, July 16th, with a 4.9ft, 12-second south swell, but it’s marred by rain and strong cross-off winds. Friday, July 17th, morning looks interesting: 6.2ft from the SSE with a very short 7-second period, but a gentle offshore wind and moderate energy (629). The description says “expect very good surf conditions,” but that short period means it won’t have the punch of the groundswell earlier in the week.
The run ends Saturday, July 18th, and Sunday, July 19th, with clean but average surf around 4.9ft to 6.6ft with short periods. It’s okay, but nothing to write home about.
The Verdict: If you’re an experienced surfer, the absolute standout is Wednesday morning, July 8th. Big, clean, offshore, and powerful groundswell. Saturday morning, July 11th, is also a solid pick for the slightly smaller but still clean conditions. Expect crowds at Trapdoors sometimes, so get there early for the good ones.
Stay frothing.
