The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for South Stradbroke over the next couple of weeks.
Right now, the outlook is pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of poor surf through the first week. The swell is tiny and the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, so it’s not worth paddling out. Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th are both write-offs with messy conditions and barely any wave height. Monday 7th through to Thursday 10th stay poor – the wind is up, the sea is choppy, and there’s no real energy.
Now, there is a genuine glimmer. On Wednesday 9th September, the morning session looks like the standout. South Stradbroke will see a clean 3ft swell from the southeast, with a period of 11 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell with good shape. The wind is glassy, which is a major positive, so the waves will be clean and lined up. Combined energy is moderate at 245, so there’s some push. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is a beginner-friendly break, so with the small size, it’s perfect for learning. Keep in mind, crowds are possible, so get in early.
After that, Thursday 10th afternoon gets a bump in size to 6ft southeast, but the wind is a strong cross-onshore and the period drops to 8 seconds, so it’s messy and lumpy. That one’s a miss.
Friday 11th and Saturday 12th are similar stories – poor conditions with choppy, cross-onshore winds. The energy drops right off.
From Sunday 13th through to the end of the forecast on Sunday 20th September, it’s all small, weak, and mostly cross-onshore. The swell is tiny, often under 2ft, and the combined energy stays low, mostly in the 30–60 range. The only real highlight in that stretch is Monday 14th afternoon, which goes glassy again, but with only 1ft of swell, it’s barely a ripple.
Overall, the only window worth chasing is Wednesday 9th September morning. The rest of the 16 days is a long, flat gap with no real surf on offer. But hey, it’s a consistent area, so forecasts can change.
