The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Norries Head.
To be straight with you, the next 16 days look pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a big gap of nothing worth mentioning until Wednesday, 22nd July. Before that, it’s all onshore wind and lumpy, messy conditions. The swell is there, but it’s just not rideable for us.
The best of a bad bunch is the only real window of opportunity: Wednesday the 22nd morning. The swell drops to a clean 5 ft from the east, and with a period of 9 seconds, it’s got some shape. But the real winner here is the wind – glassy, dead calm. That’s a rare treat and it’ll make for silky smooth lines at Norries Head. The combined energy is moderate (342), so there’s some push, but it’s not intimidating. It’s a true standout for the whole period, but even then, the surf quality is only "expect good surf conditions" – it’s not going to be pumping, just clean and rideable. Keep in mind the spot is inconsistent, and it can get crowded, so you might have some company. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no nasty surprises.
After that, the rest of the week and into the next week is a total write-off. The swell dies right off, winds turn back onshore, and we’re looking at flat, choppy junk. From Thursday the 23rd onward, wave energy drops into the double digits and the swell is under 3 ft. There’s a small window of glassy conditions on Monday the 27th, but with a piddly 2 ft from the east, it’s not worth the drive. The whole second week is a flat, calm mess.
So, if you’re keen, point the car at Norries Head for Wednesday morning, 22nd July. It’s the only show in town, and it’ll be a clean, glassy session on a small but workable easterly swell. Don’t hold your breath for the rest of the fortnight.
Rusty.
