The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for this stretch.
Right off the bat, things are pretty flat and ordinary around here. We’ve got a run of small, messy surf that’s gonna take a while to sort itself out. The first few days, from Tuesday the 18th through to Thursday the 20th, there’s some swell around 5ft to 7ft, but it’s coming from the SE and ESE with short 8-second periods, and the wind is cross-on. That’s gonna leave it choppy and pretty average. The combined energy is moderate at best, hitting 503 on Tuesday morning, but it’s not a clean wave. The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is about normal for the time of year.
The best of the whole window, and honestly the only time it’s worth paddling out, is Friday morning the 21st through to Monday morning the 24th. The swell drops right down to 3ft to 3ft, but the wind swings offshore from the N and NW, and on Sunday morning the 23rd we even get a glassy session. That’s rare, and it’s the standout. Wave heights are small, but clean. The swell direction is ENE, and Norries Head is a point break that’s exposed to that, so it’ll wrap in okay. The swell period is short at 6 to 8 seconds, so it’s not a groundswell, but with offshore winds, it’ll be fun on a longboard or a fish. The combined energy is weak, around 75 to 109, so don’t expect power, just clean little lines. This break is inconsistent and crowds are often here, so you might see a few others out.
After Monday the 24th, the surf pretty much rolls over and dies. From Tuesday the 25th all the way through to Wednesday the 2nd of September, it’s tiny, with most days showing 1ft to 3ft. The wind stays mostly offshore or cross-off, but the swell is just too small to do anything with. The combined energy drops into the double digits, often under 100, and the scores are all poor. There’s a long gap here with no real recommendations.
So, if you’re keen, the standouts are the clean, offshore mornings from Friday the 21st to Monday the 24th. Sunday morning the 23rd is the glassy pick, but it’s small. Don’t hold your breath for the rest of it.
Rusty.
