Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. I’ve had a good squiz at the charts for our local stretch, and I gotta be straight with you—it’s a real slow patch for Norries Head. We’re looking at a long, drawn-out run of ordinary conditions before anything worth getting wet for shows up. The first week is a write-off, with a solid six days of poor surf. Even then, the options are thin.
First up, Sunday the 5th of July kicks off with a tiny 3ft ESE swell, but that southerly breeze at 12 mph has it all chopped out. The water temp is sitting at a pretty standard 71°, so no surprises there. Nothing to ride.
Monday and Tuesday keep the same sad story—swell drops to 2ft and then 2ft, with cross-onshore winds making a mess. Wednesday the 8th sees a bump in swell, but it’s a weird one: a 10ft SE swell with an 11-second period hits the beach in the afternoon, but that cross-onshore wind and the sheer power (combined energy of 2473) make it a real handful. Only for the experts, and even then, it’s choppy and marginal. Not a standout.
Thursday the 9th through Saturday the 11th? Flat. Nothing. Zero energy. The ocean’s basically asleep.
Now, here’s where it gets a little interesting. On the morning of Sunday the 12th July, Norries Head finally wakes up. We’ve got a 4ft SE swell, period of 10 seconds, and the wind goes glassy—dead calm from the NNW at just 3 mph. That’s the kind of clean you dream about. The break is a point, and a long period swell like this (just over 10 seconds) can set up nicely on a point, with proper lines and long rides. Combined energy sits at 343, so there’s some push behind it. But don’t get too excited—this break is inconsistent and rarely breaks right, so you might wait a while between sets. And with crowds often about, you won’t be alone if it works. This is the only spot in the whole period worth pointing at, but don’t expect a classic.
Sunday afternoon on the 12th fades a bit—wind turns cross-shore, swell drops to 4ft. Then Monday 13th offers a 3ft ESE swell with clean cross-offshore winds in the morning, but it’s just surfable, nothing special.
From Tuesday 14th onwards, it’s back to tiny, weak junk—mostly under 3ft with short periods, some glassy windows but barely enough energy to stand up on. The odd clean morning (like Friday 17th with a glassy 0.7ft) is only good for a swim. By Saturday 19th, a 3ft NE swell appears, but it’s cross-shore wind and poor quality.
Bottom line: there’s one window—the morning of Sunday the 12th—that might give you a clean, glassy session with some shoulder-high waves if Norries decides to cooperate. Everything else is a battle with chop, flat spells, or just plain junk. If you’re keen on a paddle, that Sunday morning is your best bet, but temper your expectations. This break is a tease.
Rusty.
