Table - best surf conditions forecast for Norries Head over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got a look at the surf coming up for Norries Head over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burner, with a whole lot of ordinary days before we finally see something worth paddling out for.
We start off with a tiny bit of swell on Sunday the 12th, but it’s nothing to get excited about. There’s a weak 3ft ESE swell with a 10-second period, and the combined energy is weak (177), so it’s pretty average. The water’s sitting at 69°, which is about normal for this time of year. Monday the 13th morning goes glassy, but the swell drops to 2ft with even less energy (55), and then it’s pretty much a write-off after that. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Saturday the 19th, we’re looking at a real desert – poor surf conditions, small waves, messy winds, and a lot of days where it’s just not worth paddling out. The wind gets nasty on the 18th, with a huge 16ft swell from the SE, but it’s cross-onshore and lumpy, so that’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle session. Each one of those days has a score of 0, so save your energy.
Now, the hopeful bit. If you can wait, the standout window is Tuesday the 21st of July. On Tuesday morning, Norries Head (Point) lines up with a clean 7ft ESE swell, 10-second period, and glassy conditions – absolute perfection for experienced surfers. The combined energy is strong (1065), and with that offshore WNW wind direction matching the optimum, the wave quality is going to be worth the wait. This is a point break, and with a long-period groundswell, it’ll shape up nicely. Just be aware this spot is inconsistent and can get crowded, so pick your moment.
After that, we get a few more okay days. Thursday the 23rd afternoon brings a 4ft ESE swell with glassy conditions and good expectations, and Friday the 24th morning has a 4ft ESE swell with light offshore NW winds and clean surf. The energy is moderate (380 and 316), so it’s a decent end to the run. The last weekend of the month drops back to tiny 2ft waves, so it’s back to the drawing board.
Overall, the best bet is that Tuesday the 21st morning – mark it in your calendar. The rest is mostly waiting for the wind to cooperate.
Rusty.
