The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Norries Head.
Bloody hell, this is a tough run. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but the honest truth is there’s hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first real chance of even a marginal surf doesn’t show up until Tuesday the 21st of July, and even then it’s a struggle. Before that, we’ve got over a week of poor conditions starting from Wednesday the 15th – just tiny, short-period slop, onshore winds, and a lot of bad weather. The swell does build big towards the weekend of the 18th and 19th, with waves up to 13.1ft (combined energy of 3087), but it’s all cross-onshore and lumpy, so it’s more of a kite-surfing show than something for a paddle surfer.
The only spot that’s even a flicker of hope is Norries Head itself, a point break that’s inconsistent and can cop crowds often. The optimum swell direction here is NE, but the wind’s been a bastard from the south for most of the outlook. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing wild.
The standout – if you can call it that – is Tuesday the 21st of July morning. There’s a 8.2ft swell from the ESE with a period of 11 seconds, giving a combined energy of 1456. The wind is a moderate cross-onshore from the SE at 12 mph, so it’s choppy, but it’s the least terrible of the lot. The afternoon improves a touch with a 7.5ft swell from the E, period 10 seconds, energy 1112, and lighter 9 mph SSE winds. It’s still cross-onshore and choppy, but you might find a few lumpy ones if you’re keen. This is for experts only though – anything over 8.2ft is big, and the 11-second period means it’s a groundswell, better suited to a point like this, but the onshore wind will mess it up.
After that, it slowly drops off through the rest of the week and into the next, with waves shrinking to 3.3ft or less by the 30th, and the wind staying cross or cross-on. No real standouts in the second week – just small, weak, and messy.
Honestly, I’d keep the board in the car and check the forecast again in a few days. This one’s a write-off for now.
