The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, checkin' in from the beach. Look, I've gotta be straight with ya – the next couple of weeks aren't lookin' flash around here. We've got a run of small, average conditions with only a few tiny windows where it'll be worth paddling out. Let's break it down.
We're talkin' Norries Head, a point break that's inconsistent, so it's a fickle spot at the best of times. It's an exposed break, so it catches whatever's out there, but the problem is the swell direction is all wrong for most of the period. The optimum swell is from the NE, but we're seein' a lot of ENE and E energy, which isn't ideal. The combined swell energy is weak to moderate, with values like 95, 101, and 107, so there's not much push behind 'em.
The first few days are a write-off. Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th of August are just poor – cross-onshore winds, choppy, tiny waves. No point even thinkin' about it.
Tuesday the 25th of August morning might be your best early bet. The swell is a tiny 3ft from the ENE with a short 8-second period, but a light 6 mph north wind is blowin' cross-off, and the report says "clean." Combined energy is 120. It's not gonna be epic, but it'll be surfable and cleaner than anything else around that time. Water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
Then Wednesday the 26th of August morning has a chance. Light WNW wind, glassy conditions, with a 4ft ENE swell. The period is still short at 7 seconds and combined energy is 134. It's surfable, but ordinary. The glassy wind is a big plus, but the waves won't have much shape.
After that, we hit a real dry spell. From Thursday the 27th of August right through to the beginning of September, it's all poor surf conditions, stronger winds, and choppy junk. There's a small window on Friday the 28th of August morning with glassy conditions and 3ft swell, but it's weak (108 combined energy). It's a desperate call.
Tuesday the 1st of September morning offers a glimmer. A light 6 mph north wind, cross-off, with 3ft from the ENE. Combined energy is 136. It's clean, but the swell is tiny.
Wednesday the 2nd of September morning is similar – glassy, light east wind, 3ft ENE swell, 113 combined energy. Surfable but ordinary.
The second week is a real struggle. It's a desert. From Thursday the 3rd of September onwards, the swell drops right off. We're lookin' at 2ft to 2ft waves, weak energy, and the wind is either onshore or not ideal. The combined energy plummets to around 50 to 110, which is feeble. There's a long-period swell on Saturday the 5th of September (15 seconds from the SE), but it's only 2ft, and the wind is onshore, so it's a total waste.
Honestly, for this region, it's a pretty blank run, but with the area bein' inconsistent, it's not that unusual. If you're desperate, the cleanest, most surfable windows are Tuesday 25th and Wednesday 26th of August mornings, and maybe the first couple of days of September. Beyond that, the forecasts can change, but right now, I wouldn't be gettin' my hopes up.
Rusty.
