The Lowdown
Righto, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Norries Head. It’s a point break that’s inconsistent, and the crowds are often around – so keep that in mind.
The water temp is sitting at 69°F – that’s pretty much normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit drama.
Honestly, this 16-day window is a bit of a struggle. The first proper surf that’s even worth a mention doesn’t show up until Tuesday morning the 21st of July, and even then it’s marginal. The swell is 8ft from the ESE with a period of 10 seconds, combined energy of 1065 – that’s moderate energy. But it’s cross-on wind from the SE, so it’s lumpy and choppy. Not great.
Wednesday morning the 22nd of July. This is the best of the lot. We’ve got 6ft of swell from the E, period 9 seconds. The combined energy drops to 471 – still moderate. But the wind goes glassy, dead calm from the south. That’s a major positive – the surf will be clean. It’s a little small for a point break, but with glassy conditions, Norries Head might just line up a few fun ones. This is the standout.
Thursday morning the 23rd of July is also glassy, but the swell has dropped to 4ft from the E, period 8 seconds, energy at 213. It’s clean but small.
After that, it’s a long dry spell. From Thursday afternoon the 23rd all the way through to the end of the forecast period on Monday the 3rd of August, it’s mostly tiny, messy, or blown out. There are a few fleeting moments of glassy or clean conditions, like Saturday morning the 25th of July with a tiny 3ft, or Wednesday morning the 29th of July with 2ft, but the swell is just too small to get excited about. The combined energy drops to two-digit numbers – weak energy – and it’s just not worth paddling out for.
So, bottom line: if you want clean waves, be on the water Wednesday morning the 22nd of July. That’s your window. The rest is a write-off.
Rusty.
