The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it.
Honestly, it’s been a rough stretch lately. The surf has been a total write-off, with nothing but small, weak, onshore slop day after day. We’re looking at a major gap from now until the end of the first week. There’s a big code brown with strong SSE winds and massive, stormy swell from the 17th to the 20th, with wave energy readings in the thousands (811 to 4909), but it’s all blown out. That kind of juice with those winds is more of a kite-surfing circus than a paddle session.
We finally get a glimmer of hope on the 25th of July. The standout moment is Saturday morning at Norries Head. The wind is light and offshore from the NNW, and the water turns glassy clean. The swell is a solid 8ft from the ESE with a long 12-second period, giving it real power and shape. The wave energy is strong at 1461. The downside is that this spot is *inconsistent* and *rarely breaks*, so you’ve got to be lucky and local, but when it lines up, it’s a gem. And with that offshore wind, it’ll be a proper session for experienced surfers. The water temp is a pleasant 69°, which is about average for this time of year.
After that, conditions stay messy into the afternoon with a light onshore breeze. The next day, the 26th, has a similar size at 8ft but with cross-shore winds, so it won’t be as clean.
Looking further ahead into the last week of July, the outlook gets a bit more promising. The 27th Monday morning shows a smaller 6ft ESE swell with glassy, clean conditions and light offshore winds from the north. That’s a solid, user-friendly morning. The 28th and 29th also bring clean, offshore winds (NW/WNW) with the swell dropping from 5ft to 3ft, so it’s a mellow run-out of the swell. The energy is moderate (381-481), but the conditions will be clean for a longboard or a funboard.
So, to wrap it up: the first two weeks are a bust. The 25th of July is your best bet if you’re an experienced surfer looking for a quality, clean window. The 27th morning is a good backup for a more relaxed session. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, that’s the story.
Rusty.
