The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about Norries Head in feet, wind, and degrees.
It’s a tough start. For the first week or so, you’re looking at a lot of small, choppy, or blown-out surf. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the swell is short-period, so the quality is poor. The combined wave energy readings are weak to moderate, like 84 and 140 (weak to moderate energy), so don’t get your hopes up.
The first real window opens up on Wednesday, September 2nd. The morning is glassy, with a light offshore breeze from the ENE. The swell is a clean 5ft from ENE, with a 9-second period. The combined energy is 349 (moderate energy), and the wave comment is “expect good surf conditions.” It’s not huge, but it’ll be clean and fun. The water temp is about average for the season.
The next good one is Thursday, September 3rd morning. We’ve got a 4ft ENE swell, 9-second period, with a cross-offshore wind from the NNW. The combined energy is 212 (moderate energy), and it’s “clean.” It’s smaller than Wednesday, but still a solid morning.
Norries Head is a point break, and it’s inconsistent – it doesn’t fire all the time. The optimum swell direction is NE, and we’re getting ENE, so it’s in the ballpark. Crowds are “often” a thing, so expect a few others in the water.
After Thursday, it’s back to small and weak. The combined energy drops to 66 or 65 (weak energy) by September 7th, with tiny 2ft swells and poor wind. The long-period swell on September 6th (14 seconds, 2ft) is a long-period groundswell from the SE, but it’s too small and the wind is onshore, so skip it.
Bottom line: the best bets are the mornings of Wednesday, September 2nd and Thursday, September 3rd. The rest of the 16 days is a bust.
