The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at the Greenmount swell window.

Honestly, the first week or so is a proper write-off for any decent waves. We’re looking at a long, frustrating gap with nothing really worth paddling out for. The forecast is a bit of a tease until we get into the second week, where things finally start to rumble. There’s a standout run of surf on the 14th and 15th that’s the main event.

The real action kicks off on Thursday the 13th of August. The morning sees a decent jump in energy with a 6 ft SSE swell. The wind is offshore and light, so the lineup should be clean. The combined energy is strong at 1114, and it’s a solid enough start. But the two days that follow are the clear winners.

Friday the 14th of August is looking like the pick of the bunch. We’ve got a solid 10 ft SSE swell, with a good period of 10 seconds, so there’s some proper groundswell grunt behind it. The wind is offshore and light, keeping it clean. The wave energy is very strong (1994 in the morning, 1714 in the arvo). This is a big swell, well over the 8 ft mark, so this is strictly for experienced surfers who know what they’re doing. For them, it’s going to be pumping.

Saturday the 15th of August is another standout. Still a solid 8 ft SSE swell, again with a 9-second period and clean offshore winds. The energy is still very strong (1034 and 965). It’s a touch smaller than Friday, so maybe a bit more manageable for the strong intermediate, but still a big day. Expect some rain showers around, but the wind is the key.

Greenmount is a fairly consistent spot, but it’s very sheltered. The optimum swell direction is SE, so when the SSE swell hits, it wraps in nicely. Crowds are often here, so on these big, clean days, it’s going to be busy. The water temp is about 69°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.

So, to sum it up: suffer through the first week of nothing. Then, Thursday the 13th is a warm-up, but Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th are your best bets. Big, clean, offshore groundswell. Don’t be a hero if you’re not ready for it.

Rusty.
