The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for the Tweed River Breakwall is a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s mostly a struggle. There’s a lot of messy, blown-out days to wade through before we get any real reward. The whole run starts with a strong, lumpy swell, but the wind is all wrong, so it’s not really on. There’s a long stretch of poor conditions, but then a couple of standout windows pop up that are worth circling on the calendar.

The first week is a write-off. From Thursday the 16th right through to the morning of Thursday the 23rd, it’s a solid block of poor surf. The wind is a constant problem – cross-shore and cross-onshore from the S through SSE, and it’s fresh and strong, making the surface lumpy and choppy. The swell is there, but it’s ugly. Saturday the 18th sees a 8ft SE swell, but it’s a messy cross-shore affair. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th pump up to 10ft from the ESE, but it’s all cross-on and lumpy. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the quality is shocking. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1727 on Sunday morning and 1696 on Monday afternoon, but it’s wasted. Tuesday the 21st still has a big 7ft to 8ft E swell, but the wind is still cross-on and choppy. It’s a tough slog.

The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday the 23rd. The swell drops to a clean 4ft from the E, but the big news is the wind. It’s glassy from the NNW in the morning. That’s a major positive. The conditions are described as “good,” and the break is a consistent point. On a 4ft E swell with glassy conditions, this will be clean and fun for intermediates. The water temp is about 70°, which is pretty normal for the time of year.

After that, it’s back to mediocrity until Saturday the 25th. That Saturday morning is the real standout. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the SSE, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the NW. The conditions are rated as “very good.” This is the best bet on offer. The swell is a decent size, the period is 10 seconds, so it’ll have some punch and shape, and the wind will keep it clean. The combined energy is moderate at 619. It’s a point break, so it’ll handle the SSE swell well. Just be aware that crowds are ‘often’ here, so get in early.

The following week is a drop-off. Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th are tiny and weak. The only other flash is Tuesday the 28th morning. The swell picks back up to 4ft from the SSE, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the SW. It’s a solid option during an otherwise quiet period. The rest of the run through to the end of the month is small, with periods dropping to 5 seconds, which is just short-period slop. There’s nothing to chase there.

So, in short, the first week is a total write-off. Don’t bother. The two sessions to aim for are Thursday the 23rd morning for clean, glassy waves, and Saturday the 25th morning for the best quality swell with clean offshore winds. That Saturday is the pick of the lot.

Rusty.
