The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's cookin' for the Tweed River Breakwall over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with ya, it's lookin' pretty grim for a paddle. We've got one spot on the map, and it's a reliable point break when it's on, but the next 16 days are mostly a write-off.
We start off Tuesday the 18th with a bumpy, messy 5ft swell from the ESE but with a short 8-second period and a cross-onshore wind. The water temp is sittin' about average for this time of year at 68°. The combined wave energy is moderate at best (292), but the onshore breeze is just choppin' it all up. It's a no-go.
It doesn't really get any better from there. Wednesday the 19th drops to a tiny 3ft, and while the morning has a slight cross-shore and a better 11-second period, it's barely a ripple. The afternoon kicks up to 4ft but with a 7-second period and onshore wind again. Thursday and Friday are similar stories—small, weak, and chopped up. The combined energy is in the weak to moderate range (162, 187, 173).
We finally get a small glimmer on Saturday the 22nd morning. A clean, 2ft wave from the ENE with a cross-offshore wind. It's surfable, but just barely. The energy is weak (58). Sunday the 23rd morning is the closest we get to something decent. It goes glassy with a 3ft, 8-second wave from the ENE and the energy is still weak (83). It’s clean, but very, very small.
The rest of the week into the start of September is a desert of tiny, wind-affected slop. We get a few clean mornings on the 24th, 25th, and 30th with small cross-off winds, but the swell barely cracks 3ft and the combined energy stays in the weak range. It’s just not enough to get excited about.
The one thing to note is that long-period groundswell tries to show up on the 30th of August and the 1st of September, with periods of 14 and 12 seconds, and combined energy in the moderate range (120, 169), but the swell heights are a pathetic 1ft to 2ft and the winds are onshore or cross-onshore. It's a classic tease—all that long-period energy with nothing to push it.
Honestly, if you are really desperate, the glassy window on Sunday morning, August 23rd, is the best you're gonna get, but you'll need a grovel board. The only real standout is how consistently poor the conditions are across the board. For most of this run, that cross-onshore chop is just going to make it a battle. If the wind was better on those bigger days, it would be a different story, but it ain't.
Signing off,
Rusty
