The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for the Tweed River Breakwall. It's a bit of a mixed bag, to be honest, with no proper standout days in the immediate future. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty ordinary, with only a few brief windows of surfable, but not great, conditions.
The forecast kicks off with small, weak, short-period energy from the ENE. For Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, we're looking at tiny 3ft to 3ft swell with a period of just 7-8 seconds, and cross-onshore winds are making it choppy and poor. The combined energy is weak, reading between 83 and 94. Not much to get excited about.
Tuesday morning the 25th might be the best of a bad bunch early on. The swell is still small at 3ft from the ENE, but a light offshore N wind (3 mph) will clean things up, and the energy is still low (90). It's surfable but very ordinary – think small, weak waves for a bit of a paddle.
Wednesday morning the 26th has a similar story with a light offshore WNW wind (3 mph) cleaning up 3ft ENE swell (period 7s, energy 94). Again, it's surfable but nothing to write home about.
Thursday the 27th sees a bump in energy, with the combined swell energy jumping to 322 in the morning and 229 in the afternoon. The swell height picks up to 4ft from the east, but the period is still short (8s) and the wind is a moderate cross-shore, making conditions poor and choppy.
Friday morning the 28th is another brief glimmer. A glassy SE wind (3 mph) and 3ft east swell (period 8s, energy 104) might give you a clean little wave, but the energy is low and the swell is tiny.
After that, it's pretty grim right through to the end of the first week and into the second. We see persistent small swell (1ft to 3ft) with periods between 8 and 11 seconds, but the wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, keeping the surf poor and messy. The combined energy stays low, mostly under 200. There are a few moments of clean conditions from a cross-offshore wind on Thursday morning 3rd September and Sunday morning 6th September, but the swell is tiny (2ft and 1ft respectively).
Even the best day – if you can call it that – is Tuesday morning 25th August or Friday morning 28th August. The Tweed River Breakwall is a consistent point break that gets an ENE swell, which is right in its wheelhouse. But with the swell being so small (3ft-3ft) and the energy weak (86-90), it's really only going to be small, weak waves. The crowds are often there, but with conditions this poor, you'll probably have the place to yourself. The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Bottom line: there's no proper surf on the horizon. A few early mornings might give you a clean little wave, but it's going to be tiny and weak. For the next 16 days, this is a pretty quiet stretch.
Rusty.
