Alright surfers, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the Tweed River Breakwall. The next 16 days are a real mixed bag, but there’s a small window of hope if you’re patient.
The overall pattern is a lot of wind-affected, messy surf before a clean-up hits around the middle of the second week. Right now, we’re stuck in a cross-shore wind pattern that’s making a mess of things. The first few days, from Sunday the 5th through to Tuesday the 8th, the water’s on the cooler side at 71°, which is pretty standard for this time of year. The swell energy is moderate at best, but those southerly winds are just ruining the shape.
Things get a bit bigger mid-week, but it’s still not great. Wednesday the 8th sees a jump in size with a 10ft SSE swell rolling in by morning, and the energy is pumping hard at 3135. That’s a whole lot of water, but with a 12 mph south wind, it’s going to be a bumpy, choppy mess. Honestly, unless you’re an expert on a gun, it’s a pass. The cleanest conditions pop up on Thursday the 9th morning, with a 8ft SSE swell and a cross-offshore wind. The energy is still strong at 1614, and the period is a solid 11 seconds, so there will be some proper lines. That’s your best bet for the first week, but it's still a marginal call.
Now, the real standout. Sunday the 12th. Don’t get too excited about the size – it’s only 3ft from the ESE – but look at the wind. It’s glassy in the morning. Total stillness. That’s the kind of magic that turns a small day into a longboard dream. The 10-second period will give it some shape, and the energy is a weak 290, so it’s not going to be packing much punch. Perfect for a log, and you’ll have it to yourself if you’re early.
After that, it’s a long, slow decline. From Monday the 13th right through to the 20th, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves most days. The swell drops to under 2ft, and the energy is often down in the double digits. There are a few glassy days in there, like the 15th and 18th, but the swell is so small it’s barely breaking. The wind does swing offshore on the 15th (W 6 mph), but with a 2ft swell, it’s just a flat, clean lake. The entire second week is a washout for decent surf.
So, to sum it up: the first week is messy but has a couple of rideable days for the brave. The very best session is hands-down the glassy morning of Sunday the 12th for some small, clean fun. The rest of the outlook is a long gap of flatness until the 20th, and even then, it’s tiny.
Rusty.
