The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this forecast is a tough one for the Tweed River Breakwall (Tweed-River-Breakwall). The 16-day window starts with a flat spell and a whole lot of nothing good. The first surfable option doesn’t even show up until Thursday the 23rd of July, so we’re looking at over a week of poor conditions and no real recommendations before that.
Right now, through Wednesday the 15th, it’s tiny. Wednesday morning you’ve got a 0.7ft easterly windswell with a 10-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore at 12 mph and the combo energy is a measly 11 – weak as. The water temp is 70°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual there. The afternoon sees a bit more size at 3ft, but still cross-shore winds and a 53 energy reading. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 16th jumps to 5ft from the SE, but that’s with a 22 mph cross-shore wind and a messy 318 energy. Still poor. Friday the 17th stays around 4ft, but with rain and wind, it’s a write-off. The weekend goes from bad to worse: Saturday the 18th sees 8ft to 10ft from the SE – that’s getting big, but the wind is a strong 25 mph cross-shore, energy is 985 to 1706 (moderate to strong), and the report says poor surf conditions. Too messy for a paddle. By Sunday the 19th, we’re looking at 10ft to 12ft from the ESE with a 10-second period – that’s expert territory size, but with a strong cross-onshore wind and energy over 2000, this setup is honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st stay big (7ft to 10ft) and windy, with the Monday hitting 1923 energy. The reports finally flick to “marginal” on Tuesday, but cross-onshore winds ruin it.
The first real standout comes on Thursday the 23rd of July. That morning, the swell drops to 4ft from the E with a 9-second period, and the wind goes light cross-off from the SSW at 3 mph. The energy is a moderate 230, and the report says “expect good surf conditions” – clean waves. The water temp is still about average. This is the best on offer in the whole run. The tide might be a factor in the afternoon as it goes onshore, but the morning window is your shot.
Friday the 24th to Sunday the 27th slides back into poor conditions with moderate cross-shore winds and small swell (3ft to 4ft), and energy readings under 250. Not worth a session.
The very end of the run, on Wednesday the 29th of July, has a tiny 1ft SE swell with a very long 11-second period, clean with light cross-off winds. The energy is weak at 89, but if you’re desperate, it’s rideable. The long period on a river mouth break might make it a bit fat and straight, but it’s clean.
That’s it. The 23rd is your one true standout. The rest is a dusty run of windy, lumpy conditions. The Breakwall is a consistent spot, so it doesn’t stay poor for long, but this one’s a test of patience.
Rusty.
