The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – this stretch from now all the way through to the end of the month is pretty grim for a paddle. We’ve got a long gap with basically no surf worth chasing, so let’s just call it what it is.
Right now, and for most of the next week and a half, the Tweed River Breakwall is seeing small, weak, short-period wind swell – mostly around 2 ft to 4 ft from the east and east-southeast. The period is sitting at a miserable 7 to 8 seconds. The combined wave energy is low, generally under 100 (241 down to 60), and winds are mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, creating chop more than rideable waves. The water temp is 69°, which is pretty much average for this time of year. Not much to get excited about.
There’s a small window on the morning of Saturday, 22 August where we get a light cross-offshore wind and clean conditions, but the swell is tiny – only 3 ft from the east-northeast, and energy is weak (76). It’s surfable but very ordinary. Sunday morning, 23 August, offers a brief moment of glassy conditions with a light southeasterly wind, but again, same small, weak swell (3 ft, 8 seconds, 81 energy). You could get a few fun little ones, but don’t expect much.
The pattern drags on through the following week with more of the same – small, short-period swell and poor wind. The only real standout in this entire forecast is the morning of Wednesday, 2 September. The swell lifts to 6 ft from the south-southeast, with a period of 10 seconds and the combined energy jumps right up to 904 – that’s solid, moderate energy. The wind is light and onshore from the east-southeast, which isn’t ideal, but this is the biggest pulse we see all period. It’s still a bit messy with an onshore breeze, but the extra size and energy will be a welcome change. Given the break is a point (Tweed River Breakwall), that longer 10-second period should offer some shape. Crowds are often around here, so expect company.
No other session in these 16 days comes close to that September 2nd morning. The rest is mostly flat or choppy junk. Hang in there.
