The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for the Tweed River Breakwall is a tough one. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but honestly, there’s barely a moment worth paddling out for. The pattern shows a big, messy pulse of swell early on, but the wind is just wrong for it, and after that, it fades into a long, flat spell. There’s a significant gap of about 8 days from the 25th of July onward where there’s basically no surf to recommend.
The first real chance to get wet is on Wednesday morning, 22nd July. The swell has dropped to a clean 5 ft from the ESE, but the kicker is the wind – it’s glassy. That’s proper. The combined energy is a moderate 330, and the water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about normal for this time of year. It’s a point break, so it handles swell well, but expect it to be small and a bit weak. It’s not a standout, just the best of a bad lot. Crowds are often here, so you won’t be alone.
Thursday morning, 23rd July is another glassy one, but the swell has dropped right off to 3 ft from the east with a short period of 8 seconds. Combined energy is a weak 143. It’s surfable, but it’s ordinary.
The Saturday morning, 25th July offers a tiny 3 ft from the ESE with a clean offshore flow from the NW, but the period is a short 7 seconds and the energy is a paltry 94. It’s a light wind, clean day, but there’s just no power.
After that, it’s a long, drawn-out fade. The 27th of July sees a weird spike in period to 11 seconds, but the swell is only 1 ft, so it’s pointless. The rest of the run into early August is a flat calm with weak, short-period windswell at best. The wind turns offshore on the 30th and 31st of July, but you’re looking at waves under 2 ft.
Forget about the first few days – that 12 ft ESE swell from the 19th and 20th is a total mess. It’s got strong cross-shore wind at 25 mph, and the combined energy is a powerful 2596, but the surf quality is poor. It’s choppy, lumpy, and not worth your time. This is more of a kitesurfing setup than a paddle session.
Honestly, the best wave in the whole window is that glassy Wednesday morning, but it’s not a day to call in sick for. It’s a quiet, clean little session for the keen. The long-range stuff is just flat – don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
