The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it's a tough one to look at right now. The Tweed River Breakwall is seeing a whole lot of nothing worth paddling out for over the next 16 days. The waves are just not cooperating, and the wind is making a mess of things for the most part. We’ve got a solid run of poor surf conditions stretching from now all the way through to the end of the month, with very little hope of a decent session.
The first real chance you’d even consider getting wet is around the 21st of July, Tuesday morning. We’re looking at a 7ft swell from the east, with a period of 10 seconds and a combined energy of 887 (moderate). The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the SSE at 12 mph, which is going to leave a bit of a cross-chop on the surface. It’s only a 1 out of 10, so it’s really just a marginal forecast, not a proper standout. You’d be fighting for something rideable.
The next morning, the 22nd of July, Wednesday, is a bit cleaner. The wind drops right off with a light air from the south at 3 mph, which is a light cross-shore, leaving small wind ripples. The swell drops to 4ft from the east, with a 9-second period and weaker energy at 268. Still, it’s another marginal call, not a standout.
From there, things just keep fading out. By the end of the month and into August, the swell is tiny, often under 3ft and with periods dropping to 7 or 8 seconds. The energy drops into the double digits, and even with some glassy mornings, like on the 27th of July with a 2ft east swell and no wind, or the 28th of July with a 0.7ft glassy swell, there’s just not enough push to get you moving. The 30th of July Thursday morning offers a clean 0.7ft swell from the SSE with a longer period of 11 seconds, but it’s just a ripple.
There is no standout period in this forecast. The closest we get to a clean wave is that Wednesday morning the 22nd of July, but even then it’s small and marginal. The best advice I can give is to keep your board waxed and wait for the next change. Forecasts can change, but right now, this is a long, quiet stretch.
