The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. We got a pretty quiet run ahead of us here for the Tweed River Breakwall, eh. It’s a point break and it’s consistent, but the energy just isn’t there for most of the next 16 days. A lot of days with marginal to poor surf, so we’re looking at long gaps where I wouldn’t bother paddling out. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to get excited about.
The first sniff of anything rideable comes on the morning of Saturday the 22nd of August, with the sun half-hiding behind some clouds. Swell’s a modest 3 ft from the ENE, with a short period of 7 seconds and weak combined energy of 77. It’s mostly ordinary conditions all round, but there’s a light cross-offshore breeze so it’s at least clean. Not a standout at all, but it’s something to wet a line. Just keep in mind this spot can get crowded, and it’s often busy.
If you’re after the pick of the whole outlook, I’d point you toward Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. We get the same small 3 ft swell from the ENE, with the period bumping up to a slightly better 8 seconds, and the energy still weak at 81. But the wind goes completely glass – zero – with clear skies. That offshore, glassy surface will make those little runners as clean as they can be for a point break. Crowds are often around, so get in early. Don’t expect much power; it’s just a bit of fun.
Tuesday afternoon the 25th of August has a risk of thunderstorms and a solid breeze from the NNW, but it’s cross-offshore and clean at 3 ft from the ENE. Still poor surf quality according to the numbers. The same goes for Thursday morning the 27th of August – tiny 2 ft from the ENE, 8 seconds, but glassy again. Weak energy of 62. Worth a paddle if you’re desperate or just want to sit out there.
The final week from the 28th of August onward is really slim. The morning of Friday the 28th has a clean 2 ft from the SE with a longish 10-second period, but maybe not enough push. Saturday the 29th morning offers 2 ft from the E at 9 seconds, glassy, but again tiny. Sunday the 30th morning likewise: 2 ft E, 8 seconds, glassy. By the afternoon of the 30th the swell bumps to 3 ft from the E with stronger energy of 193, but it’s cross-onshore with poor conditions. From the 31st of August into early September, we see stronger winds and bumpy seas, with the swell staying small but the chop building. Nothing to recommend.
There’s no real standout big swell or long-period groundswell here. The whole setup looks more like a light-wind day for a longboard or a SUP. Nothing worth driving for, but keep an eye on the glassy mornings – those are your best chance at a smooth groove.
Rusty.
