The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for the Tweed River Breakwall is a real flat spell. We’ve got a gap of no real surf to speak of for the whole run. The first few days offer tiny, weak energy, and it just never really gets going. The combined swell energy creeps into the low 100s at times, like 187 (moderate energy) on the 20th, but the conditions are frankly rubbish. It’s a long, quiet period for the river mouth.
Starting off on Thursday the 20th, we've got a 4ft east swell at 8 seconds, but with an onshore easterly breeze and "poor surf conditions" – it’s a no-go. Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd drop down to under 3ft with a mix of cross and cross-off winds; Saturday morning sees a bit of clean-up with a light NNW breeze, but the swell is tiny at 2ft from the ENE, and the energy is weak (58). It's surfable, but very ordinary. Sunday the 23rd through to Monday the 31st is a repeating pattern of small, short-period east swell, around 2ft to 3ft and 7 to 8 seconds, but the wind is consistently onshore or cross-onshore from the SE or E, making it choppy and messy. The combined energy stays weak, barely cracking 100 most days, and the “poor surf conditions” tag is a constant.
There’s a tiny shift on Wednesday the 26th afternoon – a 3ft east swell with a 12 mph offshore west wind (moderate offshore and clean). It’s the best the window gets, but with only 83 in combined energy and weak swell height, it’s a micro-session for the most patient locals. Nothing to drive for. From there, it fades into even smaller waves through the first week of September, with swells dropping to 1ft to 2ft and energy falling below 100. The period does stretch to 10 or 11 seconds by the 3rd and 4th, but the size is pathetic.
Honestly, if you’re hanging for a wave, this setup at Tweed River Breakwall is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer on the days with a bit more wind and a clean cross-off. For a surf, we’re waiting for a proper push that just isn’t in the cards.
Stay patient, Rusty.
