The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim overall for the Tweed River Breakwall. There’s a big patch of up-and-down swell, but the wind is just going to wreck it for most of the run. First really good shot doesn’t pop up until the tail end of the period.
The first few days are a write-off. From Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 22nd, we’ve got a solid 10ft to 7ft swell coming from the SE and ESE, but the wind is howling out of the SSE and SE at 25 mph, blowing cross or cross-on. The energy is there – the combined swell energy on Sunday is a massive 2824 – but it’s just messy, choppy, poor quality. Not worth paddling out for.
Wednesday the 22nd shows a bit of a glimmer. The swell drops to 5ft from the ESE, and in the morning the wind goes glassy. That’s a great window – clean, smooth waves with moderate energy (399). It’s a small window, but if you’re keen and can get out early, you’ll find corners. The afternoon on Wednesday has the wind switching to a light NE cross-on, which won’t be as good.
From Thursday the 23rd all the way through to Wednesday the 29th, it’s a real dry spell. The swell drops below 4ft and the wind is all over the shop – cross, cross-on, and even moderate cross-off at times. There’s a number of days here with zero hope. The combined energy mostly sits below 250, and the periods are short, around 7-8 seconds, so you’re looking at weak, wind-affected slop. Not worth a second look.
Now, the standout is Thursday the 30th of July. The morning has a proper offshore wind from the W at 12 mph, with a clean 3ft swell from the SSE, period of 10 seconds. The combined energy is 260 – moderate – and with that offshore flow, the breakwall will be lined up and clean. This is your best bet for the whole forecast. The afternoon on the 30th is still clean but the wind goes cross-off and the swell is weaker, so stick to the morning.
The full standout is Saturday the 1st of August. The morning is looking excellent. The swell jumps to 8ft from the ESE, period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is a solid 901. The wind is light SSW at 6 mph, blowing cross-off, so the wave faces will be clean. That’s proper surf – 8ft, clean, on a point break. Bear in mind, for a point break, the shorter period (8 seconds) means the sets won’t be as long-spaced, but it’s still a great day for the intermediate to expert crew. The afternoon on the 1st turns a bit cross-on, so early session is the call.
After that, Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd of August fade quickly with the wind turning strong cross-shore, dropping the quality back to poor.
To wrap it up: the first week is mostly a bust. The two standout sessions are the morning of Thursday the 30th of July and the morning of Saturday the 1st of August. The water temp is about average for the time of year at the Tweed breakwall – nothing weird going on there. Crowds are possible at this spot, so if you see that clean morning on the 30th or the 1st, get down early.
