The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve got to be straight with you – the next 16 days at the Tweed River Breakwall are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of ordinary conditions, with only a few brief windows where the waves are even rideable. Don’t get your hopes up for any epic sessions; the swell is small, the wind is often messy, and the energy is weak.
Let’s start with the pattern. From Sunday, 23 August right through to the end of the month, we’re stuck with tiny swell – mostly 1 ft to 4 ft – and the wind is frequently cross-on or cross-shore, making it choppy and blown out. Monday morning, 24 August, gives us a slight bump with 4 ft ENE swell at 7 seconds, but the wind is a light cross-on from the SE at 3 mph, and the combined energy hits 222 (moderate). Still, the forecast calls it “marginal” – it’s surfable but nothing to write home about. The water temp is about 69°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The best chance for a paddle comes early on Wednesday, 26 August. The morning sees a light cross-offshore wind from the NW at 6 mph, making it clean, with 3 ft ENE swell at 7 seconds. The combined energy is only 70 (weak), so it’s not powerful, but the conditions are clean enough for a few fun ones. This is a point break, so it holds small swell well, but it’s often crowded, so expect company. For a short window, this is the pick of the first week.
Jumping ahead to Sunday, 30 August, we get a glassy morning with ESE wind at 3 mph – that’s a major positive for clean surf. The swell is 2 ft from the SE at 10 seconds, with moderate energy at 149 (combined). It’s small but clean, and the offshore wind will make it rideable. Again, nothing big, but it’s the best of the second week.
After that, the whole first week of September is a desert. From Monday, 31 August through to Monday, 7 September, the swell barely reaches 3 ft, and the wind is often cross or onshore. The standout moment is Wednesday, 2 September morning: glassy conditions with a light N wind at 3 mph, and 2 ft ENE swell at 9 seconds – energy is 114 (moderate). It’s clean but tiny, and the forecast says “surfable but very ordinary.” That’s the truth.
So, the best on offer is the Wednesday morning, 26 August, for the cleanest conditions, and the glassy Sunday morning, 30 August, for a quiet, clean session. Neither is a classic, but if you’re keen, those are your windows. The rest of the 16 days is a long stretch of poor surf – if you’ve got a kite, you’ll find more fun than a paddle.
Rusty.
