Table - best surf conditions forecast for Tweed River Breakwall over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next week and a half is a real mixed bag. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy conditions before one big pulse of energy shows up. Let’s break it down.
We kick off on Sunday, the 12th of July, with a bit of a nothing burger. There’s a small 3 ft swell from the ESE at 10 seconds, but the wind is a cross-off from the WNW, so it’s clean but the energy is weak (141). The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about average for this time of year. Honestly, it’s just poor surf – not worth paddling out.
Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th are even worse. We’re looking at knee-high dribble, 1 ft and 0.7 ft, with glassy conditions on Monday morning but the swell’s got nothing behind it. Combined energy drops to 33 and then 14. You’d be better off cleaning the wax off your board.
There’s a total gap from the 15th through to the 17th of July where the wind gets up and the swell is either tiny or just messy. Wednesday the 15th has a 0.7 ft swell with a 19 mph southerly wind – that’s just a chop fest. Thursday the 16th sees the swell start to build, but it’s with 22-25 mph southerlies and rain. The 4 ft swell on Thursday morning is weak and messy (energy 282), and by Thursday afternoon it’s 8 ft but with a strong cross-shore wind that’s blowing it to bits. Not for us.
Now, the standout window is Saturday the 18th of July. The afternoon is the pick of the entire outlook. The swell jumps to 18 ft from the SE with a long 12-second period, pumping a massive 11429 energy. That’s a serious groundswell. But here’s the thing – it’s coming in with a 22 mph cross-shore wind from the SSE, so it’s going to be lumpy and messy. The Tweed River Breakwall is a point break, so those long-period swells can wrap in nicely, but with that wind, it’s going to be a battle. The wave height is over 8 ft, so this is strictly for experts only. If you’re not solid, don’t even think about it. Also, expect crowds here – it’s often busy.
The next few days after that, Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 21st, see the swell dropping from 8 ft back to 5 ft, but the wind stays cross or cross-shore, so it’s still going to be a bit of a messy, choppy affair. The quality is marginal.
Towards the end of the outlook, on Sunday the 26th of July, we get a late pulse. The morning has 5 ft from the SSE at 8 seconds, with a clean cross-off wind from the SSW. That’s 438 energy, so it’s moderate, but the short period means it’ll be a bit fat and weak. The afternoon improves to 7 ft with 701 energy, still clean, but it’s a short period swell again. Worth a look if you’re keen, but it’s not the standout.
So, the best on offer is Saturday afternoon the 18th of July at Tweed River Breakwall. That 18 ft SE groundswell is massive, but you’ll need to be an expert and you’ll be dealing with wind and crowds. If you’re not up for that, the Sunday afternoon the 26th of July is a cleaner, smaller option with 7 ft and clean conditions.
Rusty out.
