The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days at Duranbah are a bit of a mixed bag. We’re looking at a long stretch of average to poor conditions, with a couple of standout sessions that’ll make it worth keeping an eye on. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The window doesn’t really start with anything worth paddling out for. Wednesday the 15th is a write-off – tiny 0.7ft swell and a 9 mph cross-off wind, but it’s just not happening. That afternoon the wind picks up to 19 mph and the swell jumps to 6ft, but it’s a messy 6-second period wind swell, and the combined energy is only moderate (278) – just poor surf.
Thursday the 16th through Sunday the 19th gets real heavy, but it’s not good for paddling. We’re looking at 8ft to 13ft of swell, driven by a strong SSE wind. The energy readings are massive – 1540, 1410, 1080, 890, 2324, even 4077 on Saturday afternoon – but the wind is either cross or cross-off, and at 19-25 mph, it’s a howling mess. Saturday afternoon (18th July) actually sees a perfect score for the swell being too big for this break – 13ft with a 9-second period and 25 mph wind. That’s not a surf session; that’s a survival mission. For a beach-and-river setup like Duranbah, this is more of a kite-surfing spectacle than a paddle-friendly wave.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st settle a bit, with 8ft to 13ft swells, but the wind is still cross or cross-off at 12-19 mph, and the energy is still high (1527 to 3557). The waves are lumpy and the tide conditions are questionable. Not your go-to.
Now, the first real standout. Saturday the 25th morning. The swell is 8ft from the SSE, with a period of 8 seconds. The kicker is a 9 mph cross-off wind from the south. The combined energy is solid (910), and the wave comment says “expect very good surf conditions.” The wind is light and clean, which means the waves will be well-shaped. This is the best on offer – a solid, clean session at Duranbah for intermediate to advanced surfers. The swell is over 5ft, so it’s a bit too big for beginners, but the conditions are prime.
The second standout is a bit later, but more of a hopeful one. Monday the 28th morning, the swell is only 4ft from the east, but the period is a long 11 seconds from the east, with a light 9 mph cross-off wind from the SSW. The combined energy is light (351), but the wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” The wind is gentle and clean, making for a smooth, glassy surface. The long period means good shape and energy, but it’s a small wave – best for logs or mid-lengths.
After that, the week winds down with small, weak swells and cross-off winds, but nothing that really fires. The 29th and 30th are just average, with the wind picking up again.
So, to wrap it up: the best windows are Saturday the 25th morning for a solid 8ft SSE swell with clean conditions, and Monday the 28th morning for a small but clean 4ft long-period swell. Don’t bother with the earlier stormy days unless you’re into big, messy power. The rest is a wait-and-see.
Rusty.
