Table - best surf conditions forecast for Duranbah over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. Look, I won't lie to you – the next few days are a bit of a write-off for a proper paddle. We've got a bit of a slow start, then a big pulse of energy that's just too angry for this spot. But there's some light at the end of the tunnel if you're patient.
The first real chance at a wave is this Sunday morning the 12th. Duranbah is showing a 4ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period, and the wind is WNW at 9 mph, which is a clean cross-off breeze. The energy is moderate (293), but the conditions are clean and the swell is small enough for a longboard or a funboard. It's a very average wave, but you'll get wet.
Then we hit a flat spell. From Sunday afternoon through to Wednesday, the swell drops right off, with heights under 3ft and energy readings falling into the weak range (down to just 7). Monday the 13th morning is glassy, but with only 2ft, it's barely a ripple. You'd be better off doing something else.
Things get interesting, but dangerous, from Thursday the 16th. A big SSE swell arrives, jumping to 10ft by Thursday morning and peaking at 15ft on Saturday the 18th. The energy readings are massive (1398 on Thursday, up to 4424 on Saturday), but the wind is a messy cross-shore, 16-22 mph. This is a full-on, lumpy, powerful ocean. For a river break like Duranbah, this is way too big for anyone who isn't an expert, and with the wind, it's going to be a washing machine. Honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The real standout, the one you should circle, is Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st. The swell drops back to a solid 8ft from the SSE/SE, with a 10-12 second period. The energy is still strong (1944 and 1779), but what makes it special is the wind. Monday morning we get a light S breeze at 6 mph, a clean cross-off. Tuesday morning is even better – glassy conditions with a SSW wind at 3 mph. For experienced surfers, this is the pick of the forecast. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a 3/2 wetsuit should be fine.
Wednesday the 22nd is still a good option, with a 5ft swell from the SE and a clean cross-off wind, but it's a step down in energy. After that, the swell fades again into the end of the month, with smaller, messier waves and onshore winds taking over. So, to sum it up: wait through the flat spell, have a look at the big stuff on Thursday but don't paddle out, and then get ready for Monday and Tuesday the 20th and 21st – that's the best two-day window.
Rusty.
