The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’m gonna be straight with you – this 16-day window for Duranbah is a tough one. We’ve got a real dry spell ahead, and honestly, there’s not a single standout session that’s going to get the blood pumping. The first few days are a write-off, and the pattern doesn’t really improve much.
The whole stretch starts with a real dud. Sunday afternoon the 23rd of August has a tiny 3-foot swell from the ENE, with a weak 96 combined energy, and a cross-shore wind. It’s poor. That same grovelly, messy theme carries right through Monday and Tuesday – small waves, cross-onshore winds, and scores that tell you to stay on the sand.
We finally see a slight shift on Wednesday the 26th of August. The swell bumps up to 4 feet from the ENE, and the combined energy hits a moderate 176. The real highlight is the Wednesday afternoon session: glassy conditions (0 mph wind from the NNW) and clean lines. The water temp is a normal 69°F for this time of year. But the waves are still ordinary, so it’s more of a “get wet” session than a best-on-offer. Thursday morning the 27th brings a cleaner 4-foot swell with a cross-off breeze from the S and stronger energy (233), but the wind is up to 12 mph, so it’s still not great.
The next week is just more of the same. The swell stays small, mostly around 3 to 3 feet, with short periods (7-8 seconds) that won’t produce much shape. The winds are a mixed bag of cross and cross-on, with a few glassy moments, like Tuesday the 1st of September morning when the wind drops to glassy. But the swell is only 3 feet with a weak 179 combined energy. The crowds at Duranbah are often a problem, and with waves this small, it’s going to be a zoo for a dribble.
By the time we hit the second week, the trend is clear: a long, frustrating gap with no real recommendations. The last few days from the 5th of September onwards see the swell drop to 2 feet and the combined energy fall into the weak double digits. It’s pretty grim. This is a river mouth break, and when it’s this flat, it’s just not worth paddling out.
So, to sum it up: there’s no standout here. The whole 16-day window is a poor run, with only a few slightly less-ordinary windows. The only real chance to get a clean wave is Wednesday afternoon the 26th of August, when the glassy wind and 4-foot ENE swell might offer a few fun ones. But don’t get your hopes up. It tends not to stay this poor for long, but right now, the ocean is in a bad mood.
Rusty.
