Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on what’s coming our way at Duranbah (river). Let’s get into it.
The 16-day window kicks off with a solid pulse of swell, but it’s not exactly friendly for everyone. We’re looking at a big, powerful SSE swell rolling in from the get-go, starting Monday the 6th of July. This thing has some serious energy behind it – the combined swell energy is sitting at 1536, which is strong. The problem is, this swell is too big for the break itself at first. We’re talking 10ft wave faces with a short, punchy 8-second period, and a stiff southerly breeze making it cross-off. It’s going to be a washing machine for the average punter. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
Tuesday the 7th sees that swell actually building even more, hitting 12ft by the afternoon with a combined energy of 2197. That’s proper heavy and honestly, only for the experts. The period stretches to 10 seconds, which gives it a bit more shape, but at that size, you’re either charging or you’re not. Winds stay cross-off from the south.
The big stuff hangs around into Wednesday the 8th with an 12ft SE swell and an 11-second period – that’s a groundswell, and the energy is pumping at 2600. Again, this is expert territory. It’s a bit big for Duranbah, but if you’re one of the few who can handle it, the morning window with that cross-off wind might be on.
Now, here’s a notable standout. Look at Saturday the 11th of July. The swell has dropped right back to a much more manageable 5ft from the SE, with a 10-second period. The combined energy is a moderate 555. But the real story here is the wind – it’s glassy. Absolutely dead calm. For a river break, that’s gold. The conditions are described as “glassy,” which means it’ll be as clean as a whistle. The swell is a bit on the smaller side, but for a Saturday morning session with no wind, you’d be a fool to miss it. Just keep in mind this break can get crowded, so get in early.
After that, things fade out. We go into a bit of a flat spell from the 12th through to mid-week the next. There’s a tiny blip on Wednesday the 15th of July with a 3ft S swell and, again, glassy conditions in the morning. The energy is weak though, only 145, so you’ll be scratching for waves, but it’s surfable if you’re desperate.
The second week shows a bit more life further out. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th of July see another pulse of SSE swell, around 6ft to 7ft, with clean cross-off winds predicted. The energy picks up to moderate levels (548-783). This is promising, but it’s a long way off, so take it with a grain of salt. The good window looks like Saturday morning the 18th with that clean 6ft SE swell and a gentle breeze.
Overall, the absolute best bet in this whole period is the glassy Saturday the 11th. For a river break, clean, small waves often beat big, messy ones hands down.
Rusty.
