Table - best surf conditions forecast for Duranbah over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next two weeks for you.
The water is about 70°F, right on the average mark for July, so you’ll be comfortable without a thick wetsuit.
The first proper swell hits on Thursday the 9th of July. A solid SSE groundswell around 8ft, period 11 seconds, combined energy reading a strong 2472. The wind is cross-offshore from the south, so Duranbah should look clean. But the report flags it as marginal, so maybe a bit rough with that tide. This is big - only for experienced surfers.
Friday the 10th drops to 6ft from the SE, still clean early with cross-off wind. Energy is moderate at 933, but still only a so-so day.
Now, Saturday the 11th of July morning - this is the pick of the first week. Glassy conditions, 4-5ft swell from the SE with a 10-second period, energy at 584. The report says “expect good surf conditions.” That glassy surface and manageable size will be magic. Crowds can be a thing at Duranbah, but morning will be your best bet.
From Sunday the 12th to Wednesday the 15th, the waves drop under 3ft, with weak energy and mostly poor conditions. A real lull.
Then Thursday the 16th of July afternoon, a big jump to an 11-12ft SSE swell, but with only an 8-second period - that’s a short-period windswell. Energy is a huge 1833, but the break is too big for Duranbah. Experts only, and it’ll be a messy, heavy one.
Friday the 17th holds at 11-12ft from the SSE, period now 10 seconds, energy 2439. Again, too big for this spot. Clean faces with cross-off wind, but pure power and chaos. Experts only.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are still big – 8-10ft – but with strong south winds up to 25 mph making conditions poor. Not fun.
Monday the 20th drops a bit, and by Tuesday the 21st of July afternoon, we’re looking at about 5ft from the SSE, period 11 seconds, energy 524. The wind is clean cross-off, the report says “expect good surf conditions.” This is the real standout of the second week – clean, solid, and much more manageable. Duranbah should hold some proper waves with lighter crowds midweek.
Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd drop back to 3ft or less, mostly small and ordinary.
The best bets: the glassy Saturday 11th of July morning, and the clean Tuesday 21st of July afternoon. Both offer good wind and decent swell. The big days in between are just too large for the break.
Keep the wax warm,
Rusty
