The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here with the look at Duranbah.
Honestly, mate, it’s a rough start. From Thursday, August 20th, we’ve got a long stretch of nothing worth talking about. The swell is tiny, mostly 2 to 6 feet from the ESE or ENE, with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds – that’s just sloppy windswell. The wind is always cross-on or cross, making it choppy and messy. The combined energy is weak, mostly under 100 (moderate) or just barely into triple digits, like 342 (moderate) on that first morning, but it’s paired with poor surf. There’s a big gap of many days here.
We get a tiny break on Wednesday, August 26th. The afternoon shows a little 3ft swell from the ENE, period still short at 7 seconds, but the wind turns light cross-off from the NW. That cleans it up a bit, and the combined energy is 127 (moderate). It’s surfable, but nothing special. Just a chance to get out.
The one day to circle is Tuesday, September 1st. The morning is glassy – that’s a huge win. The wind is from the NNW at only 3 mph, basically flat calm. The swell is 4ft from the E with a period of 9 seconds, giving it some decent shape. The combined energy is 314 (moderate). This is the only glassy session in the whole forecast. Expect good surf. It’s a week and a half away, so it’s promising but not locked in.
After that, the swell gets bigger on the 2nd and 3rd of September, with 5 to 5 feet from the E and a period of 10 to 11 seconds, but the cross and cross-on winds from the SSE and SE ruin it. The combined energy is strong – 579 and 615 (strong) – but the chop is ugly. Those days are too big for beginners, and the short period (8 seconds) on the 31st of August morning with 5 feet makes it a bit of a handful for anyone not solid.
Water temp is about 69°F, which is a touch cooler than normal for this time of year.
So, the call is simple: wait for that Tuesday, September 1st morning. The rest of the run is a dud.
Rusty.
