The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Broadbeach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty flat and quiet stretch ahead. The first real chance to even think about a paddle doesn’t show up until Sunday, August 25th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. We’re looking at a long gap of nothing from now until then, so don’t bother checking the tide charts just yet.
Sunday, August 25th (Morning) – This is the first window where you might get a wave. We’ve got a tiny 3ft swell coming from the ENE with a short 8-second period, and the combined energy is weak at 84. The saving grace is the wind: it’s glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive for clean conditions, but the lack of push means it’s strictly for the longboard or a soft-top. The water temp is 69°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Monday, August 26th (Morning) – A bit more energy shows up, with the swell height creeping up to 4ft from the ENE, and the combined energy jumps to moderate at 224. The period is still short at 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit crumbly. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSE, so it’s not clean, but it’s rideable if you’re desperate. The forecast calls it marginal, and I’d agree.
Tuesday, August 27th (Morning) – This is the best of a mediocre bunch. The wind is offshore from the NW, which is clean, and the swell is 3ft from the ENE, with an 8-second period. The energy is still on the low side at 90, but with glassy conditions, a log will feel good. The crowds at Broadbeach are often there, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Thursday, August 29th (Morning) – Swell bumps up to 4ft from the E, with moderate energy at 241, but the wind is a cross-shore from the SSE at 12 mph, which will chop it up. Not great quality.
The Standout (If You Can Call It That) – Honestly, the only real standout is the Tuesday, August 27th morning session. The offshore NW wind will make it clean, and while the swell is small, it’s the best window we’ve got. If you’re a beginner, the 3ft to 4ft range is fine, but anything over 5ft isn’t here, so no worries there.
Long-Range Outlook – After the first week, it gets even smaller. From September 1st onwards, we’re looking at 1ft to 2ft swells with weak energy (mostly under 100). The wind occasionally goes offshore, but the waves just aren’t there. The period hits 17 seconds on August 31st, but with only 1ft, it’s more of a long-period bump than a wave. Not worth the drive.
Bottom Line – It’s a quiet 16 days. If you’re keen, the Tuesday morning glass-off is your best bet. Otherwise, wait for a better forecast.
Rusty.
