The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and let me talk you through the next few weeks for Broadbeach. Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch. We’ve got a long run of small, weak, and mostly messy surf ahead. The first real glimmer of anything surfable doesn’t show up until Friday the 21st of August, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. There’s a big gap at the start of the period with no real recommendations, just a lot of poor surf conditions, so we’re playing the waiting game.
The water temp is sitting right around average for this time of year, so no need to overthink the wetsuit just yet.
Let’s break it down. The only spot we’ve got on the radar is Broadbeach, which is an exposed beach break open to swell from the east. It’s a beginner-friendly spot and fairly consistent, but don’t expect perfection.
Friday morning, August 21st is the first time we see anything close to usable. The swell is a tiny 3 ft from the east, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is weak at 158. But here’s the kicker: the wind goes glassy, dead calm. That’s a major positive for clean conditions. It’s surfable, but the waves are very ordinary. The crowd factor is often an issue here, so you’ll likely have company.
Saturday morning, August 22nd offers a similar story: 3 ft east-northeast swell, 7-second period, weak energy (77), but a light cross-offshore wind from the north-northwest cleans things up. Again, surfable but ordinary.
Sunday morning, August 23rd is another glassy morning with the wind dropping to calm. The swell is 3 ft east-northeast, period 8 seconds, energy still weak at 83. It’s clean, but don’t expect any punch.
Monday morning, August 24th sees a light cross-offshore breeze again, with 3 ft east-northeast swell and 8-second period. Energy is very weak at 67. Clean but gutless.
Wednesday morning, August 26th we get another glassy morning with a light southerly breeze. Swell is 3 ft east-northeast, 8-second period, energy 94. Still weak and ordinary.
Thursday morning, August 27th the glassy conditions return with a north-northeast breeze. Swell drops to 2 ft east-northeast, 8-second period, energy down to 62. It’s surfable if you’re desperate for a paddle.
Saturday morning, August 29th and Sunday morning, August 30th both offer glassy starts with a tiny 2 ft east swell, periods around 8-9 seconds, and very weak energy (65 and 57). The Sunday afternoon actually shows a bump to 3 ft from the east with 8-second period and energy jumping to 193, but it’s onshore and messy.
The standout session? If I had to pick one, it’s Friday morning, August 21st – the glassy conditions at dawn with that 3 ft east swell give you the cleanest window of the whole period. But keep your expectations in check: the swell is small, the period is short, and it’s a beach break, so it’ll be a bit fat and weak. Still, a clean 3 ft wave is better than a choppy 5 ft one.
For the rest of the run, look for the glassy mornings – they’re your best bet for a clean, if small, session. The wind is mostly light and variable, but the energy just isn’t there. It’s a quiet spell.
