The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk about what’s coming up for Broadbeach. The next couple of weeks start with a bit of a bumpy ride, but there’s a couple of windows if you’re patient. Water temp is right around 70°, so about average for the season.
The first proper chance to get wet is Saturday the 18th of July. You’ve got a good 7ft ESE swell rolling in, with a 10-second period, and the energy is strong at 1048. The wind is cross-offshore from the SSW, which will keep the surface clean. This is the standout of the whole run. It’s a bit meaty for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, it’s going to be well-shaped.
Sunday the 19th is a big one – 10ft from the ESE – but the wind is screaming from the SSE at 25 mph, making it a cross-onshore mess. The energy is massive, over 1400, but it’s just too blown out for a good paddle. That’s for the experts only, and even then it’s a battle.
From Monday the 20th through Wednesday the 22nd, the swell drops from 8ft down to 4ft, but the wind stays cross-onshore or cross-shore, keeping things lumpy and uninviting. Not worth the effort.
Now, Thursday the 23rd of July is the next little gem. The swell is a small 4ft from the E, period 9 seconds, and the energy is weak at 204. But the wind is glassy. Flat calm. That morning session will be as clean as a whistle, with tiny, fun little waves. Perfect for a longboard or a foamie.
Friday the 24th is similar – 3ft, glassy in the morning, but it’s dropping fast. Surfable, but only just.
After that, from the 25th of July right through the end of the month, the swell disappears to barely 2ft or less. You’ll see some offshore winds from the west now and then, but the waves are too small to count. It’s a solid 6 to 7 days of flat water.
The very last day of the forecast, Saturday the 1st of August, shows a tiny bump of 4ft from the SE, but it’s not enough to get excited about.
So, the two best bets: Saturday the 18th for the clean, solid swell, and Thursday the 23rd for the glassy, small-wave session. Everything else is either blown out or flat.
Rusty.
