The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s chew the fat on what’s shaping up for the Broadbeach region over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty grim stretch. We’re looking at a long, long dry spell. The first real recommendation doesn’t even pop up until Thursday, the 23rd of July, and even then it’s a marginal call. We’ve got a solid week of poor surf and strong, lumpy winds before that. The wait is a real test of patience.
The standout in this whole sorry period is going to be Thursday morning, the 23rd of July. We’ll finally see some glassy conditions with a light offshore breeze from the WSW at just 3 mph. The swell is small, around 4ft from the east with a 9-second period, and the combined energy is weak (199). It’s not going to be a classic, but after days of wind-chopped slop, those clean, glassy conditions will be a welcome change for a beginner-level paddle. The water temp is about 70°, which is pretty much average for the time of year, so no wetsuit worries.
The rest of the period is a mix of onshore winds, building swell, and choppy conditions. The swell actually gets pretty big on Sunday and Monday (19th-20th July), hitting 10ft, but it’s all cross-onshore and lumpy, controlled by a stiff SSE breeze. The combined energy for that Sunday morning is high (1485), but it’s a mess. Honestly, with that setup, it might be more interesting for the kite surfers than us paddle guys.
Later on, we do get a bizarre little spike right at the end on the 1st of August. A very long-period groundswell from the east at 18 seconds, but it’s tiny, only 0.7ft. The combined energy is nothing (34-51). It’s a clean offshore wind though, so if you’re desperate for a longboard and a glassy sea, you might find something. But it’s a long way off and not something to bank on.
So, the call is: brace for a week of nothing worth paddling for, then a narrow window of glassy, small surf on Thursday the 23rd. That’s your best bet. After that, it’s back to small, ordinary leftovers.
Rusty.
