The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for Broadbeach is a real mixed bag, and honestly, it’s mostly a lot of waiting for very little reward. The pattern starts with a nasty, windy mess, then gives us a brief little window of clean, rideable waves before it all fades away into tiny, weak dribble. There’s only one true standout that’s worth setting your alarm for, and it’s a long way off.
We kick off Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st with a solid pulse of swell, around 10ft dropping to 8ft from the ESE, but the wind is a disaster. A strong to fresh SSE breeze is blowing straight across the waves, making it a total washing machine. The combined energy is high, but it’s all for nothing – the surf is poor, messy, and not worth suiting up for. This is one for the kite crew, not the paddle crew.
Then we get a little reprieve. Wednesday the 22nd and Thursday the 23rd mornings see a glassy, clean setup. The swell drops to a more manageable 5ft, still from the E, with a moderate 9-second period. The combined energy is moderate, and with glassy conditions, it’s actually surfable for a beginner to intermediate. The water temp is about average for this time of year. This is the best on offer in the first week – small, clean, and fun on a log or a mid-length. It won’t be firing, but it’s the only time you’ll get a decent wave without getting blown off it.
After Thursday afternoon, it all goes south. From Friday the 24th right through to the end of July, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves – mostly under 3ft – with increasingly poor winds. The combined energy drops into the double digits, meaning the ocean is just flat. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 31st of July where a groundswell from the ESE with a very long 14-second period and a light offshore wind gives us a clean, glassy 2ft, and the energy jumps. That’s tricky, though – that long period at a beach break like Broadbeach can be fat and closey, and the swell is tiny. It’s a longboarder’s gamble.
The real standout, the one you need to circle on your calendar, is the morning of Friday the 31st of July. That’s the only time in the whole period where you get a clean, offshore morning with a proper groundswell pulse. The 2ft from the ESE with a 14-second period and a light W wind at 6 mph is the best combo we’ve got. The combined energy is moderate, and the glassy conditions will make it look a lot better than the height suggests. It’s a window of opportunity, but it’s a week and a half away.
After that, the first of August sees a rise in wind and a messy cross-shore, and then it’s back to tiny, poor surf for the first few days of August. The whole setup is pretty bleak, and there’s a big gap of almost no surf from the 24th of July right through to the 30th.
So, to sum it up: Wednesday and Thursday mornings this week are your best bet for a clean, small wave. The true standout is the morning of Friday the 31st of July – clean, offshore, with a proper groundswell. Everything else is a write-off. Don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
