The Lowdown

Alright, let’s break this down. I’m looking at the next 16 days for the Dreamtime area, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. For the first week or so, we’ve got a lot of swell coming in, but the wind is just not playing nice. The water temp here is about 69°F, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The pattern starts on Tuesday, 14 July, with tiny waves – only 1ft from the south, with a period of 9 seconds. The wind is glassy in the morning, so it’s clean, but there’s just no energy (combined swell energy is only 30). Not worth paddling out for. That afternoon, the wind switches onshore and the waves drop even more.

Wednesday the 15th sees a bit of a bump – 3ft in the morning, but the wind is cross-shore and the period is a ridiculously short 4 seconds, so it’s all chop and no shape. The afternoon gets bigger, up to 6ft, but the wind is howling at 19 mph cross-shore, making it a lumpy mess. The combined energy jumps to 284, but it’s messy energy.

From Thursday the 16th right through to Sunday the 20th, we’re looking at solid swell (8ft to 15ft), but it’s all coming from the SSE or SE, and the wind is cross-onshore at 19-22 mph. The wave energy is huge – up to 4938 on Sunday the 19th – but that’s not surfable for a regular paddle session. This is kite-surfing territory, frankly. The waves are too big, the wind is too strong, and the quality is poor.

Monday the 21st and Tuesday the 22nd settle down a bit, with swell dropping to 8ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore, and the waves are choppy. Not great.

Wednesday the 23rd shows some promise: the swell is 8ft with a period of 12 seconds (a nice groundswell) and the wind is cross-shore. The combined energy is 1675. BUT, the model says it’s too big for this break – it’s over the 8ft mark, so really only for the experts. The wind is moderate, not clean, so it’s still a tough call.

Now, if you’re looking for the standout, you have to wait until the end of the forecast period. Monday, 27 July, is the best on offer. The morning is glassy, with a 6ft swell from the ESE at 11 seconds. That’s a solid, long-period groundswell, and clean conditions. Combined energy is 819 – moderate but punchy. This is the one to aim for. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds are possible here, so get there early.

Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th also see clean conditions with offshore winds, but the swell tapers off to 5ft and then 3ft. Still good for a fun session, but not the standout.

So, overall, the first week is a write-off for quality surfing. The gap from the 14th to the 26th is pretty barren. The last few days of the window are where it’s at, with Monday the 27th being the real highlight. It’s a later call, so keep an eye on the forecasts, but it’s looking promising.

Rusty.
