Table - best surf conditions forecast for Dreamtime over the next 16 days.
G’day, crew. Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at our charts for Dreamtime. The good news is there’s a little bit of surf on the horizon, but you’re gonna have to be patient. The first week and a half is pretty much a write-off, but there’s a decent window shaping up in the second week that could be worth the wait.
Right now, it’s flat and glassy. Monday morning, 13 July, we’ve got a tiny 2ft of swell out of the ESE, period 9 seconds. The water’s sitting at 69°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year. The energy is weak – just 79 – and the waves are there but they’re ordinary. After that, it’s a long dry spell. From Monday afternoon right through to the end of the following week, conditions are pretty grim. The wind’s mostly cross-onshore, the swell gets too big for this break, or it’s just messy. From Wednesday, 15 July, into the weekend, we see the swell building, but it’s all cross-onshore, choppy, and when it hits 10ft on Thursday, 16 July, it’s simply too much for Dreamtime. The combined energy hits 1001 and then 1036 – that’s strong – but the wind is fresh and lumpy. It’s a frustrating stretch.
Then we hit Monday, 20 July. Still big, still 10ft, still cross-onshore, but the energy is through the roof at 1447. The wind is a lighter moderate breeze, and the notes say the tide and wind are favorable, but the swell is still too big to be fun. It’s a kite-surfing sort of day, not a paddle-surfing one.
Now, the standout. Tuesday, 21 July. This is your morning. The swell has dropped to a much more manageable 6ft, coming from the ESE with a 9-second period. The wind goes glassy – dead calm, from the SSW. The combined energy is sitting at 652, which is moderate, and the notes say “expect very good surf conditions.” This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window. The swell direction is a touch east of the optimum SE, but with clean, offshore winds, it’s going to be tidy. The crowd is listed as “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it’s worth it. This is a fairly consistent break, so it tends to handle these conditions well.
After that, the surf drops off again. Wednesday and Thursday, 22 and 23 July, see smaller waves – 5ft to 4ft – with cross-onshore and cross-offshore winds, but the quality is marginal. Friday, 24 July, morning again looks glassy with a 4ft swell out of the E, period 9 seconds. The energy is 289, and the notes say “good surf conditions,” but it’s not as punchy as Tuesday. The rest of the run into the 28th is small and weak, with light winds but not much push.
So, bottom line: save your energy for the morning of Tuesday, 21 July. It’s the highlight. The first week is a dud, and the second week has a few fun moments, but that Tuesday glassy morning is the one to circle.
Rusty.
