The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Dreamtime. It’s a bit of a rough start, to be honest. We’ve got a solid pulse of swell coming in, but the wind is just a mess for the first week. It’s a real shame, because there’s some serious energy in the water. The water temp is sitting right on the money at 21°, so no surprises there.
The first few days are a write-off. Friday (July 17th) through to Monday (July 20th) is all cross-onshore winds, gusting 18-25 mph, with lumpy, messy conditions. The swell is big, 8ft to 12ft, from the SSE, but it’s just blown out. The combined energy is massive, hitting 2138 on Saturday morning, but who cares if you can’t get a clean wave? It’s a no-go.
Tuesday (July 21st) is still not great. The swell is still a big 8ft, and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s still choppy. The energy is still strong at 1308. We’re not even close to getting a wave.
Things start to drop off mid-week. Wednesday (July 22nd) and Thursday (July 23rd) see the swell drop to 4ft to 5ft, and the wind eases, but it’s still cross-onshore. The energy is down to 250-460. You might get a few grovelly ones, but it’s marginal at best.
Then there’s a gap. From Friday (July 24th) right through to Tuesday (July 29th), the swell is tiny, under 3ft, and the energy is weak. There’s a little window on Sunday 26th morning with glassy conditions and 3ft, and again on Tuesday 28th morning with 1ft and glass, but it’s just too small for any real fun. It’s a flat spell.
Now, the real standout is the very end of the forecast. We’re looking at Saturday (August 1st). The swell is back up to a clean 6ft from the SSE, and the wind is coming from the NW at 9-12 mph, which is a proper offshore. The combined energy is a solid 541. The forecast is calling for “very good surf conditions” with a “clean” or “moderate offshore” look. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way off, so keep an eye on it, but it’s the first time the whole window lines up properly. The 6ft swell is a good size for an intermediate, but it’s a bit much for beginners. The period is a short 9 seconds, so it’ll be a bit of a windswell, but with that offshore flow, it’ll be clean.
Earlier in the week, on Thursday (July 30th) morning, there’s a glimmer of hope. The swell is 4ft from the SSE, the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, and the energy is 269. It’s described as “clean” and “expect good surf conditions.” It’s a decent option if you’re desperate for a paddle, but the best is definitely the Saturday.
So, the call is: early next week is a total write-off. The middle of the week is small and messy. The only real hope is the end of the run, with Thursday (July 30th) being a decent option, but the standout is Saturday, August 1st. That’s your best bet for a proper session.
