The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at the surf picture for Fingal Point and Beach. Water temp is running about 69°F, which is pretty normal for the season, so no drama there.
The first two weeks, from Wednesday the 19th through the end of August, are a real snoozefest. Swell is tiny, mostly under 3 feet, with short periods of 7-8 seconds, and the wind is a mess – cross-on, onshore, and often blowing 10-15 mph. The combined swell energy is weak, often in the double digits (like 84, 101, 122), so there’s just no juice. The surf quality is poor, with a lot of wind chop and small ripples. It’s a long dry spell, nearly two weeks of nothing worth paddling out for.
The first real highlight shows up on the morning of Tuesday, 1st September. A solid SE swell rolls in at 5ft, with a long period of 14 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy jumps to 842 (moderate to strong), so there’s some grunt behind it. The wind is onshore from the E at 10 mph, so it’ll be a bit bumpy. That long period groundswell is better suited for the point at Fingal rather than the beach, where it might flatten out a bit. For the experienced surfer, that’s the best window in the whole forecast.
The mornings of the 2nd and 3rd of September are worth a mention too. Swell drops to 3ft and 4ft, with periods around 12-13 seconds, and light cross-on winds. The energy is still decent (480 and 428), and the conditions are marginal but rideable. Nothing compared to the 1st September, though.
If you’re a beginner, this whole 16-day run is a write-off. The small, weak swell and onshore winds just aren’t beginner-friendly. For the experienced surfer, the 1st September is the one to target at Fingal Point. The rest is a waiting game.
