The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s size up what’s coming at Fingal Point and Beach.
Honestly, it’s a rough stretch for the next week and a bit. The swell is either tiny or gone, and when it does show up, the wind is going to trash it. The first real chance of anything decent isn’t till Thursday, July 23rd, so we’re looking at more than a week of nothing worth paddling out for. That’s a long dry spell.
The worst of it hits Saturday, July 18th, when a big, ugly 13ft SE swell comes through with a strong 40 km/h cross-shore wind. The combined energy is massive (3236), but it’s a total mess. Sunday, July 19th, is even bigger at 15ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore, making it a complete write-off. This is the kind of day you’d leave to the kite surfers.
The one real highlight is the morning of Thursday, July 23rd. We’ve got a clean 8ft E swell with a 12-second period and some good energy (1644). The wind is glassy – a light air from the SSE – so the surface will be like a mirror. This is a point break, so that longer period groundswell will wrap in nicely. It’s a beginner-plus spot, but at nearly 8ft, it’s getting too big for the groms – this one’s for the experienced crew. Could be a proper session.
The water temp is 70°F, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing to write home about.
After that, we get a few more so-so days, but nothing that gets the blood pumping. The end of the month has a little bump on Wednesday, July 29th, with a 5ft ESE swell and a light offshore breeze from the NNW, which should clean it up, but it’s small.
Hang tight, and keep an eye on that Thursday morning.
Rusty.
