The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Fingal Point and Beach over the next 16 days. To be straight with you, it’s a real mixed bag and mostly on the flat to frustrating side. For a point break that likes a decent NE swell, we’re seeing a lot of small, short period ENE slop and hardly any windows of clean, ridable waves.
Right off the bat, Friday the 21st is a total write-off. We’re looking at a tiny 3ft swell from the ENE, bundled with cross-shore breezes that just mess everything up. The combined energy is weak at 89, and the water temp is sitting at 69°F which is about normal for the time of year.
Saturday the 22nd is the one little glimmer in this first week. Saturday morning we get a light, clean cross-offshore breeze from the NW and a 3ft ENE swell, period of 7 seconds, but the combined energy is still weak at 71. It’s not pumping, but the morning window looks rideable and clean. The afternoon actually goes fully offshore with WSW winds at 6 mph, keeping things clean on the 3ft swell with energy up slightly to 90. Saturday is the best day of this run, really the only day I'd call surfable.
After that, it’s a long, grim stretch. Sunday the 23rd through to Tuesday the 27th is riddled with cross-onshore and onshore winds. The swell does bump up to around 4ft by the morning of Wednesday the 26th, and the combined energy jumps to 222, which is moderate. Wednesday morning actually scores a “good surf conditions” tag, with glassy conditions whipped up by a light WNW breeze at just 3 mph. That’s a standout morning. The 4ft ENE swell with an 8-second period won’t have much punch, but it’ll be clean. The afternoon falls apart though, with a cross-onshore chop again.
Thursday the 27th stays messy, and the swell pushes to 5ft, but winds are just too strong and from the wrong direction.
Friday morning the 28th gives us another glassy start, this time with a NNE breeze at 3 mph and a 3ft E swell, but the energy is moderate at 185. It’s surfable, but ordinary.
Then from Saturday the 29th all the way through to the end of the run on September 5th, it’s just poor. Winds either blow too hard, from the wrong angle, or the swell drops right away. By September 4th and 5th, we’re looking at tiny 1ft to 2ft junk. The combined energy plummets to 48 on September 5th, basically flat.
So the one real standout is Wednesday morning the 26th of August. If you can get out for the glassy, clean conditions on the 4ft ENE swell, that’s your window. Saturday morning the 22nd is the second shout, also clean.
Don’t hold your breath for the rest. This point is fairly consistent, so it’s a frustrating spell. The long period swell showing up on September 2nd and 3rd from the east, 10-11 seconds, might offer a little something at a point like this, but the onshore wind kills it.
That’s the story from here.
