The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. The next 16 days are looking pretty grim for Fingal Point and Beach. That’s a tough run, but we’ll get through it. There’s a big gap at the start with no real surf on offer, so let’s just be honest about it.
The first few days are a write-off. Thursday the 16th through to the morning of Saturday the 19th are just poor. Onshore winds, cross-chop, and hardly any energy. The swell is either non-existent or tiny, with combined energy barely reaching 72 (for the Friday afternoon). Not worth paddling out for.
Then Sunday the 19th rolls around, and it looks like a big pulse of swell hits. We’re talking 13 ft to 15 ft from the SE, but the wind is cross and strong (25 mph), and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions.” That’s a real shame. The energy is huge (3253 on Sunday morning), but it’s just messy. The period is around 10 seconds, so it’s a decent groundswell, but with that wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. This one is really only for the experts, and even then, it’s not going to be clean. The setup at Fingal Point and Beach is a point break, so the long period could work nicely, but the cross-wind kills it.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are still big, with 12 ft to 8 ft of swell, but the wind is still cross or cross-onshore. The energy is still strong (2310 to 1108), but the surf quality is just “marginal.” It’s not great, but if you’re desperate, Tuesday morning has a 8 ft ESE swell with a 10-second period, and the wind is a moderate cross-shore. It’s not clean, but it’s the best of a bad bunch.
Wednesday the 22nd drops off to 6 ft, and it’s still cross-shore. Not good.
Now, there’s a glimmer of hope on Friday the 24th. The morning shows a 3 ft swell from the E, period 8 seconds, and the wind is glassy. Literally, “glass” and “glassy” in the data. The combined energy is only 137, so it’s weak, but it’s clean. That’s the best morning of the whole run. It’s still “surfable but very ordinary,” but at least it’s not choppy. The afternoon is the same. If you want a longboard or a funboard, that’s your window.
After that, it’s back to poor conditions and cross-shore winds. The weekend of the 26th and 27th has some clean cross-off winds on Sunday morning, but the swell is only 3 ft and the period is 8 seconds. Barely enough to get a wave.
Then we get to the final standout: Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st. The 30th shows a 5 ft ENE swell with a period of 8 seconds, and the wind is offshore (W at 9 mph). The guidance says the optimum swell direction for Fingal Point is NE, so ENE is close. The combined energy is 262 (moderate), and the wave comment is “expect good surf conditions.” That’s the real highlight. The 31st is even better: 6 ft from the E, period 8 seconds, offshore wind (W at 6 mph), and combined energy of 417 (moderate). That’s clean, surfable, and the best of the whole 16 days.
So, the standout is Thursday the 30th and Friday the 31st. The wind is offshore, the swell is a solid 5 ft to 6 ft, and it’s from the right direction. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual. The break is fairly consistent, so it’s not a fluke. Crowds are possible sometimes, so you might have a few friends out, but it’s a point break, so you can find a peak.
For the rest of it, it’s a long stretch of poor surf. The big swell on the 19th is a waste because of the wind. If you’re a kite surfer, that Sunday might be more interesting than paddling, but for a surfboard, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
