The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s on the table for Fingal Point and Beach over the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you—there’s a long, dry stretch ahead before we see anything worth getting excited about.

We’re kicking off with nothing doing. From Monday the 24th of August right through until the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The swell is small, mostly around 3ft to 6ft, but the wind is all wrong. We’ve got cross-onshore breezes, sometimes moderate, and the wave energy is weak to moderate, with combined energy values bouncing between 84 and 430. It’s choppy, messy, and just not worth paddling out. Even the 6ft days later in the period are blown out. The water temperature anomaly is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.

The first glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 2nd of September. Early morning, we’ve got glassy conditions—wind is almost nothing, a slight air from the ENE. The swell is 5ft from the ENE with a period of 9 seconds, and combined energy is sitting at 349, which is moderate. The forecast says good surf conditions. For a point break like Fingal Point and Beach, that ENE direction is bang on the optimum, and the glassy wind will keep things clean. This is the standout window in the whole outlook. The swell size is okay for most surfers, not too big, not too small, though beginners might find it a little punchy.

After that, we slip back into mediocrity. Thursday the 3rd of September morning has a clean look with offshore wind and 4ft swell, but the energy drops. The following days fade off with smaller swell and poor wind again. The 5th of September has a tiny 3ft morning with light offshore wind, but it’s weak. The 6th of September brings a 2ft long-period swell from the SE at 14 seconds, but the wind is cross-on in the afternoon, and the energy is moderate. Nothing to write home about.

The second week is pretty quiet. The 7th and 8th of September see swell drop to under 3ft, with combined energy below 100. There’s a clean moment on the 8th morning with 2ft from the ENE and light offshore wind, but it’s ordinary surf. Consistency is fair, but the quality just isn’t there.

Bottom line: if you’re keen, pencil in Wednesday the 2nd of September. That’s the one morning where everything lines up—clean, glassy, decent swell. The rest is mostly a waiting game. It’s not a bad stretch for a break that’s fairly consistent, and forecasts can always improve, so don’t lose hope entirely.

Rusty.
