The Lowdown
G’day, it’s Rusty. I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day stretch for Fingal Point and Beach is a real tough one. We’re looking at a whole lot of nothing for the most part. The surf stays small and pretty ordinary, with the combined swell energy struggling to get going – it’s mostly in the weak to moderate range (95 to 240). The water’s sittin’ around 69°, which is about average for this time of year.
Right now, through Sunday the 23rd, we’ve got a tiny 0.9m to 1.0m ENE swell comin’ in with a short period of 7 to 8 seconds, but the wind is cross-on from the SSE or SE, makin’ it choppy. Not worth paddlin’ out. Monday the 24th is similar: small, short-period ENE swell with a light cross-onshore breeze. Still poor. Tuesday the 25th sees a slight bump to 1.1m with the same short period, but winds shift cross-shore from the north. The chop is still there.
Wednesday the 26th is the first tiny glimmer. We get up to 1.2m from the ENE (period still only 7 seconds), but the wind goes cross-off from the NW in the morning, cleanin’ it up a bit. The combined energy hits 137, so there’s a little push. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Thursday the 27th brings a jump in energy to 240, but it’s a messy cross-shore wind from the south kickin’ up a real chop on that 0.9m ENE swell. No good. Friday the 28th stays poor.
Saturday the 29th morning is the standout in this whole bleak picture. There’s a 1.0m E swell with a period stretchin’ to 9 seconds and the combined energy is 155. But the real charm is the wind – it’s dead calm, glassy conditions. For a point break, that’s clean as a whistle. That light, glassy mornin’ window is the best on offer. The swell direction is ENE, which is close to the optimum NE direction for this spot. Still, it’s small surf.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. Sunday the 30th through to Monday the 7th of September is just repeat poor surf: tiny 0.7m to 1.2m swells, mostly short period, and cross or cross-on winds messin’ things up. There are a few mornin’s with clean cross-off winds, but the swell is too weak to get excited about – energy values bounce around 100 to 228. There’s no real size, no proper groundswell, just small windswell that never delivers.
Honestly, if you’re dead keen for a paddle, that Saturday the 29th mornin’ glass-off is your only real look. Otherwise, this setup would be more interestin’ for a kite surfer on the beach than a traditional surfer. The crowds are “sometimes” there, but I doubt you’ll have company on these tiny waves. Rusty.
