The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for Fingal Point and Beach over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, mate, it's looking pretty grim. We've got a solid run of mostly poor surf conditions stretching right through. The first real sniff of anything worthwhile doesn't show up until the morning of Saturday the 22nd, and even then it's nothing to write home about. For most of this period, we're dealing with a combined swell energy that's pretty weak, often below 100, and the wind is just all wrong – mainly cross or cross-onshore, creating chop and messy conditions.
Let's break down what little we've got. The first possible window is Saturday morning, 22 August. The swell is tiny, only about 3ft from the ENE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy is barely 69, which is weak. However, the wind is a light cross-offshore from the NNW, so the surf is actually clean. It's surfable, but you'll be scratching for waves. It's really only worth a look if you're desperate.
Sunday morning, 23 August, is the one standout in this whole outlook. We've got glassy conditions with an ESE breeze, and the same tiny 3ft ENE swell. The combined energy is just 107, so still weak. It's not big, but for a beginner or someone wanting a longboard session, the clean, glassy surface makes it the best option on offer. Fingal Point is a beginner-friendly spot, and this is about as good as it's going to get.
The following week is a write-off. From Monday the 24th right through to the end of the month, we see strongest cross-offshore winds or onshore slop, with wave heights dropping below 3ft and combined energy levels tanking into the 20s and 30s. Nothing worth paddling out for.
There is a slight pulse of longer period swell on the 31st of August, with a 3ft, 14-second SE groundswell giving a combined energy of 422 (moderate energy), but it's accompanied by a moderate cross-onshore wind, making it choppy and poor. A real shame. The first day of September offers a 2ft SE swell with a 12-second period, but again the wind is messy.
In short, if you're determined to get wet, the glassy window on the morning of 23 August is your best and only real bet. It won't be memorable, but it's clean. Otherwise, this is a long, flat, and blustery run. The water temperature is sitting around 68°, which is about average for the time of year at this spot. Keep an eye on the charts, because it can't stay this poor forever.
Rusty.
