The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s happening at Fingal Point and Beach over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, this forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions, with only a few very brief windows of something that might be surfable, and even then it’s ordinary. The first real glimmer of anything only shows up on the morning of Thursday, the 20th of August, with a small 6ft swell from the ESE, but it’s short period stuff at 8 seconds and the wind is cross-shore, leaving it a bit messy. The combined energy reading is moderate at best (369). It’s marginal, and I wouldn’t be rushing out.
The water temperature is sitting at 68°F, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year, no real anomaly to speak of.
The only real standout, and I’m stretching here, might be the morning of Saturday, the 22nd of August. We’ve got a clean, cross-offshore wind from the NNW, and the swell is a tiny 3ft from the ENE. It’s clean, but it’s small and weak with combined energy of just 92. It’s surfable, but you’ll be hunting for a wave.
After that, it’s a long gap of poor to no recommendations right through the end of August and into September. There’s a slight uptick on the morning of the 1st of September, with a 3ft SE swell showing a longer period of 12 seconds (341 energy), but the wind is cross-shore and the data says poor surf conditions, so it’s a miss. The following Wednesday morning, the 2nd of September, brings a bigger 5ft SE swell with moderate energy (516), but that cross-onshore wind from the SSE will chop it up badly.
This is a place that tends to go quiet, and this run is a perfect example. For the next two weeks, you’re looking at either tiny, weak waves with bad wind, or a bit of size but blown out and choppy. There’s nothing here that shouts “surf today.” If you’re desperate for a paddle, the cleanest windows are the 22nd of August morning, but keep your expectations real low.
Rusty.
