The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s talk about what’s cooking at Fingal Point and Beach.
To be dead honest, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for quality surfing. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions kicking off now. The wind is a mess – strong cross-shore winds from the south and southeast, gusting up to 18-22 mph, and a lot of rain showers making it messy. The swell is small and weak, with energy levels barely registering (0-16), so there’s nothing to get excited about. It’s pretty grim until around Thursday the 17th, when the swell starts to jack up, but it’s still blown out.
Friday the 18th and Saturday the 19th see a big jump in size, with solid 8 ft to 15 ft SE swells, but the wind is still cross-shore and fresh. The combined energy is massive (811 to 4909), but with that wind, it’s just a washing machine. This is expert-only territory, and honestly, it looks more like a kite session than a paddle session. The water temp is about 69°F, which is bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real standout comes on Thursday, July 24th in the morning. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the E, with a long 12-second period, and the wind is a light cross-offshore from the SSW at 12 mph. The combined energy is moderate (1098), and the break is clean. This is a good window for experienced surfers – the point setup will handle that long-period groundswell well, and the wind will keep it tidy. Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, but if you get out early, it’ll be worth it.
The absolute best of the whole forecast is Saturday, July 26th in the morning. The swell is 8 ft from the SE, with an 11-second period, and the wind is glassy – a light S at 3 mph. The combined energy is strong (2802), and the conditions are clean. This is a stellar morning for experienced surfers. The point should be offering some proper waves, and with that offshore wind, it’s going to be glassy perfection. The water is still average temp, but who cares when it’s this good.
The following Monday morning, July 28th, is also worth a mention – 6 ft ESE swell, 11-second period, and glassy again with a light NNW wind. It’s a bit smaller, but still clean and fun for a quick session.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. The real play is Thursday, July 24th morning, and the absolute standout is Saturday, July 26th morning. Don’t waste your time before that unless you’re kiting.
Rusty.
