The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at Fingal Point and Beach.
Honestly, mate, we’re in for a pretty grim stretch. The 16-day window kicks off with a big fat gap of no surf worth talking about from Wednesday 15 July right through to the morning of Tuesday 21 July. That’s a solid week of flat or blown-out junk. The first few days are just a write-off – tiny slop, strong cross-shore winds, and a whole lot of nothing. The swell is basically absent, with combined energy readings barely reaching 28 (weak) on the Wednesday morning, then dropping to 0 or single digits for days. It’s a pretty depressing start.
Then, from Tuesday 21 July, we start to see a bit of life, but it’s still not great. Tuesday morning shows 8 ft of swell from the ESE at 10 seconds, but the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, so it’s choppy and messy. The combined energy climbs to 1375 (moderate), but the surf quality is described as marginal. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The standout for the whole period, if you can call it that, is the morning of Thursday 23 July. That’s the one real window of hope. We’ve got a 5 ft swell from the east at 9 seconds, with a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSW at just 3 mph. That’s clean, mate. The combined energy is 318 (moderate), and the conditions are described as “expect good surf conditions.” The swell direction is from the east, which is a solid match for the optimum NE direction at this point break. It’s a point break, so it handles that east swell well. But keep in mind, this spot is fairly consistent, so it’s not a surprise when it works. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so you might have a few others out. But for a beginner-plus wave, this is the morning to get wet.
After that, it goes back downhill. The rest of the week into late July is a return to small, weak, cross-shore slop with combined energy dropping back to triple and double digits. Nothing else stands out. The wind is never right again, and the swell is too small or too short-period to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: if you’re desperate, Thursday 23 July morning is the only shot. The rest of the 16 days is a write-off, with a big blank week at the start and then a long, disappointing tail. Fingers crossed the forecasts change, but for now, it’s a quiet one.
Rusty.
