The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and here's the rundown on what's on the cards for the local stretch.
Look, I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – the next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for Fingal Point and Beach. We've got a fair bit of energy pulsing through, but conditions are going to keep us on our toes. The standout session is a long way off, so we'll have to be patient.
The water temp is sitting at 69°, which is about 0.9° cooler than average for this time of year, so pretty normal.
We kick off on Thursday, 20th August, with a cross-on breeze from the SE at 6 mph and a 6 ft swell from the ESE. It's a bit bumpy and the tide is questionable, so it's not a great call. The swell energy is moderate (369) but the period is short at 8 seconds. Friday through to the end of the month is mostly a write-off with small, weak swells and poor winds. There's a glimmer on Saturday morning, 22nd August, with a clean cross-off breeze from the NNW and 3 ft waves from the ENE, but they're barely surfable. The energy is weak (101). Monday, 24th August, morning has glassy conditions with a tiny 2 ft swell from the east, but it's pretty ordinary. The energy is only 75.
From 25th August through to the 30th, it's a real grind. The swell is small, the wind is often cross or onshore, and the energy is mostly weak. There are a few clean moments on the 25th and 26th mornings with cross-off breezes, but the waves are still under 4 ft. It's a tough stretch.
Now, the real standout is the morning of Tuesday, 1st September, but it's a full week away, so keep that in mind. The forecast shows a clean cross-off swell from the northwest at 12 mph, with a 5 ft set from the east. The swell energy is very strong (543) and the period is 8 seconds. The wind will be clean, making it a good option for more experienced surfers, as the size is a bit much for beginners. After that, the morning of Wednesday, 2nd September, looks promising too with a clean cross-off breeze from the WSW at 6 mph and a 4 ft swell from the east, with a moderate energy (265) and a 9-second period. That's a nice combo.
The last few days of the forecast, into early September, are a real fade. The swell drops to under 3 ft and the winds become onshore or glassy. The energy is weak, and the period is short, so it's mostly a flat, quiet period.
So, all in all, the best bet is the morning of 1st September if you're a confident surfer, or the morning of 2nd September for a slightly more manageable size. The rest of the time, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
