The Lowdown
Grab your board, but maybe leave the big gun at home for a while, because we’ve got a rough start here. The first week is a write-off, honestly. We’re looking at a solid 10 days of pretty average to downright ugly conditions before things start to turn.
From Sunday morning, July 19th, it’s a messy scene. The swell is showing a big 16 ft from the SE, but it’s coming with a screaming 25 mph cross-shore wind. The combined energy is a massive 5873, but all that power is just getting shredded into a nasty cross-chop. That’s a hard pass. This trend of strong, junky cross and cross-onshore winds hangs around until Wednesday the 22nd, when we finally see a window.
Wednesday morning, July 22nd, is where it gets interesting. The swell drops to a manageable 6 ft from the E, but the key is the wind. It goes glassy. That’s the magic word. The combined energy is down to 516, so it’s a moderate pulse, but with that glassy surface, Fingal Point and Beach is going to be clean and inviting. The swell period is 9 seconds, a solid mid-period groundswell, so it’ll have a bit of shape. This is the standout for the near-term.
Thursday the 23rd still has a little 5 ft ENE swell with light cross-shore winds in the morning, but it’s marginal. The rest of the week, from the 24th to the 29th, is a flat spell. Swell sizes drop below 3 ft and the combined energy barely cracks 100. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 30th with a 2 ft, 14-second, long-period groundswell from the SE and a clean offshore wind from the W. The energy is moderate at 169, but it’s tiny. It’s a tease.
Now, the real promise rolls in for the end of the month. Friday, July 31st, in the afternoon, the wind goes glassy again, and an 8 ft SE swell pushes in with a combined energy of 697. That’s a solid, strong pulse. The period is a short 7 seconds, so it’ll be a bit fat and dumpy, but with the glass, it’s going to be fun for the crew who can handle that size.
But the absolute best of the whole forecast is Saturday, August 1st. The morning shows a 10 ft SE swell with a combined energy of 1468 – that’s very strong wave energy. The wind is a light, clean cross-offshore from the SSW. This is “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” territory. The swell is over 8 ft, so this is experts-only at Fingal Point. It’s a beach and point setup, and with that much power, it’s going to be a proper session. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing out of the ordinary. The back half of that Saturday afternoon gets messy with a cross-on wind, so get your session in early.
Honestly, the first week is a slog. Get through the 10 days of rubbish, and you’ll be rewarded with a glassy Friday and a pumping Saturday morning. The long-range Saturday call is promising, but we’ll have to see how it firms up.
