The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – we’re looking at a long, lean stretch ahead. The next decent opportunity is a good way off, so don't get your hopes up for this week.
We’ve got a bit of a blank run from now until around Saturday the 22nd of August. Before that, it’s pretty much all poor surf conditions with tiny, weak energy and messy wind. Thursday the 20th has a 5ft swell from the ESE, but it’s onshore and just ugly (combined energy of 273 – moderate punch but wasted). Not worth paddling out.
Saturday, 22nd August is the first real whisper of hope. Through the morning and afternoon at Fingal Point and Beach, we’ve got small 3ft swell from the ENE (7 seconds period – short period, so it’ll be a bit fat) but the wind goes light offshore (WNW at 3 mph in the arvo). That offshore breeze will clean up the surface nicely for a point break like this. Water temp is sitting at 69°, which is bang on average for this time of year. It’s surfable but ordinary – think small, weak waves with a combined energy around 75-81. Crowds are *sometimes* a thing here, so you might have some company. You could get a few fun little rides if you’re a beginner wanting to work on technique.
After that, we hit another gap. From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, it’s back to poor conditions. Winds go onshore or cross-shore, swell is tiny or messy. There is nothing worth calling a standout.
The only real standout is a long-range promise. Look ahead to Wednesday, 26th August. The afternoon session at Fingal Point and Beach shows a clean, moderate offshore wind (W at 12 mph) with an 3ft swell from the ENE (8-second period). That’s that clean, lined-up point potential. Combined energy is 122 – moderate. The wind will be offshore and clean, and it's rare to get that combo with the fresh breeze. For a beginner-plus spot, this is the one to circle on the calendar, but keep in mind it’s over a week away, so it’s promising but not guaranteed. The rest of the 16 days? Pretty flat and forgettable.
Stay patient, crew. It’ll turn.
