The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get this straight from the start. To be honest, the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for a proper surf. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead, so don’t get your hopes up for anything decent.

For the first week, it’s a write-off. The wind is howling from the south and southeast, smashing Fingal Point and Beach with strong cross-shore and cross-onshore winds. The surf is there, but it’s ugly. Saturday afternoon sees a solid 10ft swell from the ESE, but with 25 mph winds, it’s a complete mess. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s not worth it. The combined swell energy is pumping at 1951, but it’s accompanied by a strong cross-shore wind that’s ruining any chance of a clean wave. The whole weekend is the same story: big, powerful swell (over 2000 combined energy), but with relentless rain squalls and lumpy, choppy conditions. Don’t bother.

Monday and Tuesday are still messy, but things start to settle a little. The swell drops from 12ft to 7ft, and the wind backs off to a moderate breeze. It’s still cross-onshore, though, so it’s choppy, not clean. The combined energy is still decent (1200 on Tuesday morning), but the quality isn’t there.

Wednesday July 22nd is the first sign of life. The wind swings offshore from the ESE in the afternoon, with a light breeze and a 5ft swell from the east at 9 seconds. The combined energy is only 311, so it’s weak, but with offshore wind, it’ll be clean. The water temperature is a comfortable 70°F, about average for this time of year. This is the best you’ll see all week, but it’s still marginal.

From Thursday July 23rd onward, it’s a slow slide into flatness. The swell keeps dropping, and by the weekend of July 26-27, we’re down to 2ft and 2ft with barely any energy. You’ll see some glassy mornings on the 26th and 28th, but with only 1ft to 2ft of swell, it’s not surfable. The combined energy is below 100, which is just weak.

The second week is a total loss. It’s flat, with tiny swells and no power. The end of July and start of August shows nothing but 0.3ft to 0.7ft waves and combined energy in the single digits. There’s no standout here, no hidden gem. The only thing that might catch your eye is a very long period swell (15-18 seconds) showing up on July 29th and 30th, but it’s only 0.3ft to 0.7ft. That’s a tease, not a wave.

So, the honest truth is: there’s nothing to chase. The one day that might offer a clean, small wave is Wednesday July 22nd afternoon, with the light offshore wind. But it’s a beginner-friendly, weak wave. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. Otherwise, the forecast looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those big, windy days. Stay patient – the forecasts can change.
