The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's chew the fat on what's cooking over the next couple weeks.
It's a bleak start, folks. We're looking at a solid run of onshore slop and lumpy cross-chop. The water temp is sitting at 70°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year, nothing weird there. But the surf is a total write-off from Thursday, July 16th, right through until the morning of Tuesday, July 21st. That's a long five days of nothing. The wind is just a constant nuisance from the south and southeast, tearing up any chance of clean lines. There's a massive spike of energy on Sunday, July 19th, with a combined energy of 3512, but that's a 15ft monster with a screaming cross-onshore wind. That's a hard pass for anyone but the most hardcore—and it's not even clean.
The whole setup here is a beach and point, but with that much wind and swell, it's honestly looking more like a kiteboarding session than a proper paddle surf.
Things start to get a little less depressing around Wednesday, July 22nd morning. The swell drops to 6ft from the east, with a period of 9 seconds, and while the wind is still cross, it's light. The energy is down to 486, which is weak. Still, it's a marginal call at best. Not worth a mad dash.
Now, here's the one moment that stands out in the whole 16-day window: Thursday, July 23rd morning at Fingal Point and Beach. That's your golden window. The swell is a clean 4ft from the ENE, period of 9 seconds, and the wind is glassy. Glassy! That's a rare treat. The combined energy is 279, so it's not a freight train, but it's clean, and it'll be fun on the point. The crowds are noted as "sometimes" here, so you might have a few mates out, but on a Thursday morning, you've got a good chance at a peaceful session. The water temp is still about average for the time of year. This is the best on offer, no question. After that morning, the wind swings back onshore in the afternoon, so get it while you can.
After that, the rest of the run is pretty ordinary. Friday, July 24th and Saturday, July 25th mornings see the swell drop further, with Saturday, July 25th morning having another glassy window but with only 2ft on offer. That's surfable, but you'll be scratching for anything decent. The energy is down to 57, so it's really weak.
From Sunday, July 26th right through to the end of the month, it's just tiny, weak, and mostly messy. Nothing worth setting the alarm for. The second week is a reliable snooze-fest.
So, to sum it up: if you've got a window, make it Thursday, July 23rd morning. That's your standout. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
