Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Hey, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Fingal Point and Beach over the next couple of weeks. It’s a point break, good for beginners and up, but we’ve got a pretty flat start coming.
Monday, 6 July starts with a small 0.7ft (2ft?) – let me stick to the rules: I’ll use imperial as requested. Swell 2ft from ESE at 13 seconds – that’s a long period groundswell – but wind is southerly at 19 mph, cross, making it a lumpy mess. Water temp around 71°F, about average for this time of year. That same junk continues through Tuesday and Wednesday – Wednesday has zero energy, absolutely flat. Thursday morning has 3ft SE, 11 sec, but still cross wind out of the south at 12 mph – no good.
Thursday afternoon on the 9th of July: a jump to 8ft from SE, short 10-second period, energy strong (1145). Wind moderate cross from the south – that size is expert territory and messy. Friday 10th: 6ft SE, same cross wind, still not a standout.
Saturday 11th morning: the wind finally eases to a slight air from SSW at 3 mph, cross-off, clean. Swell is only 1ft from ESE but with a very long 14-second period – that’s proper groundswell, but tiny. Not a highlight.
Now Sunday 12th July morning – that’s the one. Light west-northwest breeze at 6 mph, cross-off, clean. Swell 4ft from SE, 11-second period, energy 359 (moderate). The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions.” That’s your best bet. The optimum swell direction here is NE, so ESE/SE is a bit off, but on a point break with clean offshores, it should line up nicely. Crowds are sometimes, so you might have company.
Monday 13th morning: offshore west wind 9 mph, clean, but only 2ft short period – small but maybe a fun learner wave. Tuesday 14th: flat with 0.7ft, glassy. Wednesday 15th: dead flat – 0.3ft, energy in the single digits.
Thursday 16th morning: a little pulse – 4ft SE, 10 sec, light SSW wind 3 mph cross-off, clean, energy 265 – small but could be glassy fun.
Friday 17th morning: 5ft SE, short 8-second period, light south wind cross-off – punchy but short period.
Saturday 18th: week-two brings size – 8ft SE in the morning, 10ft SE in the afternoon, both with short period (8-9 sec), strong winds from SW at 19-22 mph cross-off. That’s big and raw – experts only, and it’s going to be a handful with the short period. Energy over 1300 in the afternoon. Not a fun day for most.
Sunday 19th: still big – 7ft and 6ft from ESE, 8 sec, strong southerly winds 16-19 mph cross-off. Monday 20th morning glassy with 3ft E, 7 sec – weak and small.
Tuesday 21st: tiny and cross-on.
So the standout is definitely Sunday 12th July morning – clean offshores, 4ft groundswell at 11 seconds, decent energy. The calm stretch before that – from Monday 6th through Friday 10th – is mostly poor, with only a brief big/raw spike Thursday afternoon. After Sunday 12th, the next decent window is Thursday 16th morning but it’s smaller and less certain. The big swell on the 18th is more for the hardcore crew.
Given Fingal is fairly consistent overall, there’s always a chance things improve, but right now it’s a waiting game. Keep an eye on that Sunday.
Rusty.
