The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let’s break down the next couple of weeks for Fingal Point and Beach. No need to sugarcoat it – we’ve got a bumpy road ahead, but there’s a short window that’ll make it worth paddling out.
Right now, Sunday afternoon, we’ve got a solid 16.4ft south‑east swell rolling in, but that SSE wind is howling at 25 mph, cross‑shore. The water’s a frothy mess – massive energy (4624) but zero quality. That’s a hard pass. The sea will stay poor through Monday and Tuesday as the swell drops but the wind hangs on cross‑onshore. By Wednesday morning the swell is down to 5.6ft, still cross‑shore, but the wind has eased to a light 3 mph. It’s still marginal though – just a few small, lumpy peaks.
Then comes the standout: Thursday morning, 23 July. Glassy. Dead calm. The swell has settled to a clean 3.9ft from the east, with a 8‑second period – not a long‑period groundswell, but enough to push nice little lines down the point. Combined energy is moderate (213). The water temp is about 70°F, pretty much average for this time of year. This is your best chance – a clean, surfable wave with no wind ripples. The break is a point, so it’ll handle the east swell okay even though the optimum direction is north‑east. Crowds are possible (sometimes) but on a Thursday morning you might score a few solo waves. The surf is fairly
