The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down the surf for the next couple of weeks around Fingal Point and Beach. It ain’t a classic run, but there are a few clean windows that’ll get you wet for sure. The water temp is about normal for the season, no big anomalies.

The first few days are real average. Saturday 22 August starts with knee-to-waist high ENE swell running 3ft and a short 7-second period. The morning’s clean with a light offshore from the WNW, then Saturday afternoon goes glassy – dead calm. Energy is weak (69-80) but the conditions are clean, so if you’re a beginner or just want a quiet session, it’s surfable but nothing to write home about.

Sunday 23 through Tuesday 25 August is a bust. Swell’s small, wind switches cross or onshore, and the quality tanks. That’s about a three-day gap where I’d stay dry.

Wednesday 26 August shows some pulse. Swell pushes to 4ft from the ENE, period still short at 8 seconds, but the wind goes light cross-offshore and the wave energy climbs to 179-206. Wednesday afternoon is your best bet – clean, building, and the score edges up. Not pumping, but you’ll snag a few fun ones at the point.

Then a quiet spell until the standout. Early on Saturday 29 August, the swell lifts to 6ft from the ENE, period stays 8 seconds but energy hits 352. The wind goes glassy – dead calm, offshore from the NE early. That morning is the best of the first week by far. Clean, punchy, and the point will be taking shape. Expect a few others out there, crowd is possible.

Sunday 30 August and Monday 31 August turn ugly. By Monday morning the swell hits 8ft, but it’s onshore crap from the east at 35 km/h, and the combined energy is a massive 851 – strong juice but with heavy rain and howling wind, it’s junk. That one’s for the kite folks.

Then the real highlight. Tuesday 1 September is gold. Swell settles to 5-6ft from the east, period still 8 seconds, but the wind is glassy – calm in the morning and glassy again in the afternoon. Energy sits at 318-374 – solid. Clean conditions at Fingal Point with waist-to-chest high sets, and that point will be reeling. This is the session to circle. Get out there.

Wednesday 2 September has a bit more size at 6ft from the east, period stretching to 11 seconds, energy at 571. But the wind swings cross from the SSE at 15 km/h, so it’s lumpy. The early morning might be okay, but not clean. Thursday 3 September is back to onshore slop with 5-6ft.

Friday 4 September morning offers another clean window: 6ft from the NE, cross-offshore wind from the NNW, energy at 431, and clean conditions. That’s a solid morning session, but the afternoon gets crossed out.

From Saturday 5 September onward, the swell drops fast – back under 3ft with weak energy and cross winds. The last few days aren’t worth chasing.

Bottom line: the two best moments are Saturday 29 August morning and Tuesday 1 September. Tuesday 1 September is the one – glassy, clean, decent energy, and Fingal Point doing its thing. Get in early.
