The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this forecast is a bit of a heartbreaker for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid pulse of swell coming through, but the wind is going to be a real bastard for most of it, making things messy and hard to love. The real standout is a very short window of clean conditions mid-week, but don’t get your hopes up for much else.
The early part of the run is a write-off. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a no-go with strong, onshore winds and big, lumpy seas. The swell energy is massive on Sunday, hitting a whopping 4569 (combined energy), but it’s a messy 16ft cross-onshore SE windswell that’s just dangerous for everyone except maybe the kites. That theme continues into Monday and Tuesday – plenty of power in the water (still three-digit energy readings), but the wind keeps it chopped and sloppy. You’d be wasting your time.
Then, on Wednesday the 22nd, we get a little taste of magic. The morning is still a bit compromised with a light cross-onshore breeze, but by the afternoon, the wind drops to glass. The swell cleans up to a clean 4ft from the east, with a period of 8 seconds. It’s not huge, but the absolute lack of wind makes Fingal Point and Beach look like the best option in the entire 16-day window. The energy is a modest 222, but it’s all about the clean, glassy surface. This is your window.
After that, it’s a long, slow fade. Thursday the 23rd sees a drop to 3ft, and the wind turns back onshore. From Friday the 24th right through to the end of the month, it’s a flat spell with tiny, crumbly waves and persistent cross-shore winds. The energy readings drop to double digits, and most days are a complete zero. There’s a brief, clean moment on the morning of Tuesday the 28th with 2ft on a glassy 6-second period, but it’s tiny and short-lived. The whole second week is a long, slow grind of nothing much.
So, to put it simply: the only true standout is the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd. Get out there for that glassy 4ft east swell. Everything else is either too big and windy, or too small and flat. A tough run for the Point.
Rusty.
