G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s coming for Fingal Point and Beach over the next couple of weeks.

It’s a bit of a slow start, then a big slug of energy shows up, but the wind’s not always playing nice. The water’s sitting at 70°F, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year.

First decent wave is this Saturday morning, 11 July. It’s small—only 3ft—but it’s coming from the ESE with a long 13-second period, so there’s some push. The combined swell energy is weak at 195. Wind is glassy out of the south at 3 mph, so the surface is smooth. Not a standout, but you could scratch a few.

Saturday afternoon is the real deal. The swell lifts to 4ft, still ESE, period 12 seconds, and the energy jumps to 429—moderate, with some guts. The wind goes northerly and turns glassy at 3 mph. This is the best wave in the whole outlook. Expect clean conditions, long lines off the point, and that ESE swell working nicely. Crowds are possible, so get there early.

Sunday morning, 12 July, the wind shifts to WNW at 12 mph, cross-off, clean but gusty. Swell drops to 4ft from the SE, period 10 seconds, energy at 248. It’s marginal. Sunday afternoon is smaller and just ordinary. Monday morning, 13 July, is tiny at 2ft, glassy but weak. Then we hit a dry stretch from Monday afternoon all the way to Friday, 17 July. The surf goes poor, with heights dropping to 0.7ft and barely any energy. Kite guys might eye Wednesday afternoon if that 4ft S swell with 5-second period catches the wind, but for a paddle surfer, it’s a dead run.

Then, bam. Friday morning, 17 July, a big 12ft SE swell hits, period 9 seconds, and energy at 2323—strong. But the wind is screaming SSE at 19 mph, cross-onshore, and lumpy. Over 8ft with that wind, it’s expert territory, and honestly, it looks better for kiting than paddling. That big energy sticks through Saturday and Sunday, 18-19 July, with heights of 10-12ft and energy over 2000, but the wind stays cross or cross-onshore, keeping it ugly. Sunday morning, 19 July, is a little better—10ft SE swell, period 11 seconds, and cross wind at 12 mph—still messy, but the longer period means better shape for experts who can handle the chop.

Monday, 20 July, the swell drops to 6ft, and the wind lightens up, but it’s still cross or cross-onshore. Marginal. After that, the surf fizzles out into tiny, poor conditions through to Sunday, 26 July, with nothing worth chasing.

So the one to aim for is Saturday afternoon, 11 July at Fingal Point and Beach. That 4ft ESE swell with glassy north wind and clean conditions is your window. If you miss it, that big pulse late in the week has power but the wind kills it.

Rusty.
