The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Right, let’s have a proper look at what’s cooking over the next couple of weeks.
Straight up, it’s a slow start. We’re looking at a solid week of small, average surf before things start to get interesting. The first real standout doesn’t show up until about a week away, so don’t be in a rush.
The first session worth considering is Sunday morning, 19 July at Fullers. It’s a tricky reef setup, and it’s inconsistent, so you’ve gotta be on your game. The swell is a clean 3 ft from the SW with a very long period of 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is moderate (676). The wind is light and cross, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not blown out. Water temp is 55°, which is 4° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a lot colder, so make sure you’ve got a thick steamer. This one’s for advanced crew only.
The rest of the first week – Monday 20th through Thursday 23rd – is all similar story: small SW or SSW swell around 2 ft to 3 ft, periods around 14-17 seconds, and light cross-shore winds. The combined energy sits between 381 and 788, so nothing special. Surf quality is marginal, and the conditions are a bit choppy. Not worth getting wet for unless you’re desperate.
Now, Friday 24 July late morning shows a bit of a pulse. Swell is still only 3 ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to 24 seconds – that’s very long period groundswell. The energy is moderate (991). The wind is light cross-shore, so it’s still clean. But honestly, it’s still small, and the long period might make it straighten out on a beach break – Fullers is a reef, so that’s a good thing. It’s a marginal call.
Saturday 25 July morning is a bit better: 3 ft SSW swell, 21-second period, and moderate energy (1163). Light wind again. Still nothing to lose your mind over.
The standout window opens up on Sunday 26 July morning. This is the best on offer. The swell is 3 ft from the SSW, period 19 seconds, and the combined energy is strong (1118). The wind is light and cross-offshore, so the surf will be clean and well-shaped. The data says excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers. This is a true highlight for the whole forecast – a clean, lined-up reef wave with proper groundswell. Crowds are possible here, so you might have some company.
Monday 27 July morning keeps the run going: 4 ft from the SSW, 18-second period, and strong energy (1360). Light cross-off wind. This is a solid session, but the afternoon wind picks up to a moderate breeze, so get in early.
Tuesday 28 July morning is another good one: 4 ft from the SW, 17-second period, and energy is strong (1445). Moderate cross-off breeze. It’s still clean, but the wind is a bit stronger.
Wednesday 29 July morning: 3 ft SSW, 16-second period, moderate energy (1183). Gentle cross-off wind. Clean and fun.
From Thursday 30 July onwards, the swell starts to drop off and the period shortens. The energy drops to 734 and 611 by the afternoon. Still clean, but smaller and less power.
Friday 31 July is a real letdown: tiny 2 ft to 3 ft SSE swell with a long period, but the wind is cross-onshore and very light. Energy is weak (418). Not worth it.
Saturday 1 August morning sees a bit of a spike: 5 ft from the SSE, 15-second period, strong energy (1244). That’s a bigger swell, but it’s short period and cross-shore wind. It’s marginal, and the afternoon gets a bit choppy. Could be fun for a bigger wave, but it’s not the same quality as the SSW groundswell earlier.
The rest of the run into Sunday 2 August and Monday 3 August drops off quickly – small, short period, and onshore winds. The last few days are a write-off.
So, to wrap it up: the pick of the bunch is Sunday 26 July morning at Fullers. Clean, solid groundswell, good energy, and light winds. After that, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th mornings are also solid. The rest of the window is small and average. Don’t even bother with the first week or the last few days.
Rusty.
