The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here, checking in on the local surf scene. Let’s get straight into it.

We’re looking at a pretty quiet week ahead, with a real pick-up in energy further out. The first few days are all about consistency, but the real standout is going to be a nice shot of groundswell towards the end of the month and into the start of August.

Starting off this Saturday afternoon, 18th July, it’s a bit of a tease. Fullers is seeing a tiny 2.6ft swell from the WNW, but the period is a massive 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy is moderate (576), and the water is sitting at 55.4°, which is a solid 3.8° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a hood. The wind is cross-shore from the WNW, not ideal, but it’s a tricky low-energy day. The surf is there, but it’s marginal.

Things don’t really improve much through Sunday, 19th, and Monday, 20th. We’re stuck with the same small swell, around 2.6ft to 3.0ft, with the direction swinging a bit to the SW and SSW. The period stays long, around 16-17 seconds, which keeps the energy moderate (in the 500-900 range). The wind is light and mostly cross-shore, so it’s cleanish but gutless. The main takeaway is that the swell is there, but it’s just not big enough to get excited about.

Now, the pattern holds through Tuesday, 21st, and Wednesday, 22nd. Still small, still clean with light winds, but the swell is just too tiny to really recommend. The energy is dropping off a bit, from 645 down to 394. You could get a longboard out, but it’s not going to be firing.

Thursday, 23rd, and Friday, 24th, look similar. The swell size sticks around 2.6ft to 3.0ft, but the period is still long. Friday afternoon, 24th, is interesting because the period jumps to 24 seconds – that’s a very long-period groundswell. The energy is strong (874), but the swell height is still tiny. That long period will make it a bit tricky at Fullers, which is a reef break. It’ll be clean with cross-offshore winds, but it’s a real "if you’ve got the patience" kind of session.

Alright, here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday, 25th July, is the first real standout. The swell is still only 3.0ft, but it’s from the SW and the period is 21 seconds. The energy jumps to 1323 in the morning and 1563 by the afternoon – that’s strong wave energy. The wind is clean cross-offshore from the NW. This is the kind of day where the reef at Fullers will start to show its teeth. The long period means it’ll be a bit straight, but the reef handles it well. The water is still cold, so don’t forget the rubber.

For the pick of the entire forecast, look at Sunday morning, 26th July. The swell is 3.0ft from the SSW, period 19 seconds, and the energy is a solid 1053. The wind is a light cross-offshore from the NW. The conditions are described as "excellent for experienced surfers." This is your window. The break is inconsistent, but when the sets come through, they’ll be clean and lined up. Crowds are possible, but it’s worth the gamble.

Moving into the next week, Monday morning, 27th July, is another top call. The swell bumps up to 3.9ft from the SSW, period 18 seconds, and the energy is 1297. Again, light cross-offshore wind. More size, more power, still clean. The afternoon gets a bit windier, so stick to the morning.

The rest of the week from 28th July to 30th July sees the swell holding around 3.6ft to 4.3ft, with periods dropping a bit to 16-17 seconds. The energy stays strong (1085-1459). The wind is mostly cross-shore, so it’s a bit choppier, but still surfable.

Then on Thursday, 30th July, we get a bit of a weird one. The morning shows a 6.2ft swell from the NW, but the period is a short 9 seconds. That’s a lot of windswell, and the energy is 1354. It’s going to be a bit of a bumpy, messy wave. The afternoon cleans up with a cross-offshore wind, but the swell switches to a small 3.0ft from the SSE. Not the best combo.

The final few days, 31st July through 2nd August, see the swell drop back down to 3.3ft-4.6ft, mostly from the S. The periods are shorter, around 12-15 seconds, and the energy fades. The wind is light and cross-shore, so it’s clean but small. By Sunday afternoon, 2nd August, it’s pretty much gone.

So, to wrap it up: the first week is a write-off for anything decent
