The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Fullers.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a slow start. The first few days are pretty flat and weak, with tiny swell. From Friday the 21st through to Tuesday the 25th, you’re looking at small, messy, marginal surf. Waist-high at best, with a lot of cross-shore breeze and not much energy behind it. The swell is mostly SSW, but it’s short on power and the conditions are just not there. You’d be better off cleaning the wax off your board and waiting.
Then things start to change. Wednesday the 26th morning is where it first gets interesting. That’s when we see a jump in the swell – 1.2m from the S, period around 15 seconds, and the combined energy hits 927 (moderate). That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the NW, so it’s going to be clean. This is a standout for the more experienced crew – it’s still a bit small for the advanced-only crowd, but the quality is there. The water temp is sitting at 15°, which is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
Thursday the 27th morning is similar, with 1.0m S swell, clean cross-off winds, and good energy (667). Friday the 28th morning holds the same pattern, 0.8m SSW with a long 18-second period, clean and lined up. Good for the patient surfer.
But the real highlight, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Saturday the 29th morning. The swell is 1.1m from the SSW, with a nice 18-second period, and the combined energy is a solid 1136 (strong). Winds are light and cross-offshore from the NW, so it’s going to be glassy. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The waves will have shape, push, and clean faces. This is a proper window, and it’s the best on offer in the whole 16-day run. Just bear in mind that Fullers is an inconsistent reef break, so you need some luck with the timing, and it’s a spot for advanced surfers only. Crowds can show up sometimes, so get there early.
The following week starts to get a bit more mixed. Sunday the 30th still has some 1.0m SSW swell in the morning, but by the afternoon it shifts to a junky 2.3m NW windswell with a short 6-second period – that’s not your friend. Monday the 31st is similar, with messy windswell and a strong cross-offshore breeze. Not great for a paddle board.
Into September, Tuesday the 1st is small and marginal again. Then Wednesday the 2nd afternoon brings a bit of a surprise: glassy conditions, light wind from the WSW, and 1.2m WNW swell with a 9-second period. The energy is moderate (516). That’s a decent little window for a glassy session, but it’s a short-period swell, so it won’t have the same grunt as the earlier groundswell.
The rest of the first week of September is generally small SSW swell with onshore or cross-onshore winds, so nothing to get too excited about. The 16-day window is a tale of two halves: a slow start, a clear standout around the 29th, and then a return to average conditions.
Stay patient, score that Saturday morning, and don’t sleep on the Wednesday the 2nd glass-off.
Rusty.
