The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at the next couple of weeks for Steamer Lane – The Slot. Water's a warm 61°F – that's about 4°F above the usual for July, so it's like a heated bathtub out there. But the surf? Honestly, it's a slow start. We've got small, cross‑onshore waves through Friday and into the weekend, nothing to get excited about. The energy's there – moderate readings around 600‑700 – but the swell direction is all over the place and the period's short or the wind's messy. Saturday and Sunday see a bit of a shift to offshore breezes but still only knee‑high stuff. Monday afternoon turns choppy. So the first week is a write‑off for most of us.
Come Tuesday the 21st, there's a tiny improvement – a 5ft SSW groundswell showing Tuesday afternoon with offshore wind, but it's still only marginal. The real story starts a week later. From Thursday the 24th onward we start seeing longer period swells – 21 and 24 seconds – and the energy ramps up into four‑digit territory. But it's still cross‑onshore, so the quality's not there yet.
Then Sunday the 27th morning brings a 4ft SSW swell at 18 seconds with light offshore flow (WSW 3 mph) and a combined energy of 1491 – that's strong. But the absolute stand‑out is Sunday afternoon: 5ft SSW at 19 seconds, offshore wind from the SW at just 3 mph, and energy surging to 2073. That's a very long‑period groundswell hitting a reef break – perfect set‑up for those long, lined‑up walls. Crowds are common at Steamer Lane, so expect company, but with the swell direction coming from the SSW it won't be the ideal westerly angle, yet the offshore wind will make it clean as a whistle. For advanced surfers only – that size and power isn't for beginners.
Monday the 28th keeps the good run going – 4ft at 17 seconds, offshore again, energy around 1500. Then we see a shift by Thursday the 30th: a 7ft NW swell at 9 seconds – that's a short‑period windswell with cross‑onshore wind, so it's big and choppy, better left for the experts or maybe the kites. The final few days into August fade back to smaller, less organised swell.
So to sum it up: the first six days are a bust
