The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a pretty quiet stretch. The first few days are a bit of a write-off, with only small, weak swell and cross-onshore winds messing things up. The first real glimmer of hope comes on Thursday the 20th of August. We've got a little 2ft SSW groundswell rolling in, with a period of 14 seconds, and the wind goes glassy in the afternoon. That's a rare treat for Steamer Lane-The Slot (Steamer Lane-The Slot). The water is sitting at 61°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so it'll feel nice. The combined energy is moderate (438), so it won't be a powerfest, but those clean conditions make it the standout of this first week. It's a reef break, so it's for advanced surfers only, and crowds are often an issue here, so expect company.
We then hit a bit of a flat spell. The swell drops off and the wind stays in a cross-on or onshore direction for days. The combined energy dips into the low 200s and 300s, which is weak. It's a dry patch that lasts right through until the end of August.
Things start to look a bit more interesting around the 27th of August. The swell bumps up, but it's a short-period WNW windswell with a period of just 8 seconds, so the quality won't be there. The best bet of the whole outlook is likely the 31st of August. It's a Monday and a bit of a long-range call, so less certain, but the morning has glassy conditions with a 3ft SSW groundswell and a longer period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (355), and with that glassy wind, it'll be clean. Not a massive day, but the best of the bunch.
The real pulse of energy hits later on. On the 28th of August, the combined energy leaps into the strong range (830) with a 5ft NW swell, but the period is short (9 seconds) and the wind is cross-on, making it choppy and messy. That's a big swell for the Slot, over 5ft, so it's too big for beginners and getting into expert territory. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on that afternoon.
The 2nd of September morning also has a good window, with glassy conditions and a 2ft SSW groundswell with a very long 17-second period. The combined energy is moderate (386). That long period will create some nice lines at this reef, but the sets will be few and far between.
The pick of the whole forecast is the morning of the 31st of August for the best combination of clean conditions and reasonable swell. The afternoon of the 20th of August is the next best thing, purely for the glassy conditions.
Rusty, signing off.
