The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s kick it off.
The surf’s going to be a bit of a slow burn for the next couple of weeks. The slot is seeing some energy, but most days are looking pretty marginal. The standout moment is shaping up for the 29th of August, when a solid pulse of swell and some decent conditions finally come together.
Let’s talk about Steamer Lane-The Slot. Right now, the water is sitting at 62°F, which is about 4° warmer than usual for this time of year—a nice treat if you’re thinking about going in without a thick suit.
The first real week is a slow grind. Friday the 21st kicks off with a small 2 ft swell from the SSW, period at 13 seconds, but the wind is cross-onshore and the wave comment says it’s marginal. Energy is 274, which is weak. Through Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd, we’re looking at similar story: swell around 1 ft to 2 ft, with a bit of a cross-on breeze. Sunday afternoon does see a bump to 4 ft from the WNW, but period drops to 8 seconds and the wind is onshore, so it’s not going to be clean.
Monday the 24th through the end of the week keeps that pattern: small swells, mostly between 2 ft and 3 ft, with cross-onshore or onshore winds. The energy starts creeping up, hitting moderate levels like 393 (26th) and 551 (26th afternoon), but the conditions just aren’t there to make it worthwhile. Most days score a 1 out of 10.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Saturday the 29th of August, morning session: we’ve got a 4 ft swell from the SSW, period 18 seconds—that’s a nice long groundswell. Wind is just a light cross-onshore breeze at 6 mph. Energy hits 1009, which is strong. The wave comment still says marginal, but the score jumps to a 2, which is the best we’ve seen. This is the peak of the window. That long period makes it better suited to a point or reef setup like The Slot, so it should produce some well-shaped, powerful lines. The afternoon sees the swell hold at 3 ft and wind backing off to a light cross-shore, so there’s potential for a solid session either side of the day.
Sunday the 30th of August holds similar 3 ft swell, but the energy drops to 647 (moderate), and the winds stay light. It’s still a goer, but not as punchy as Saturday. After the 30th, the swell drops back to the 3 ft-4 ft range through the first couple of days of September, with mostly light winds, but nothing really stands out again until Wednesday the 2nd of September morning, when we finally get a glassy session with the wind reading “glass” and 4 ft from the WNW, period 8 seconds. That morning is the only totally clean window in the whole outlook, and it scores a 2—definitely worth an early paddle.
After that, we slide back into marginal conditions with small SSW swell and light cross-onshore breezes through to the 5th of September. There’s a 10-11 day stretch from the 21st through the 31st where the surf is just too small or too messy to get excited about for most of it.
So, the real highlight is Saturday the 29th of August with that strong energy and long-period groundswell, and the glassy morning on Wednesday the 2nd of September is the cleanest window if you want silky conditions. The Slot is the spot to watch.
Rusty.
