Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the cards for Steamer Lane – The Slot over the next couple of weeks. It’s a real mixed bag, to be honest. We’ve got a lot of days where the waves are there but the quality just isn’t quite coming together, with a few real standouts to keep an eye on if you’re patient.
Right off the bat, Monday morning (6 July) we’re looking at a clean 3 ft SSW swell sneaking in with a light onshore breeze. It’s a long-period groundswell at 16 seconds, which means nice energy, but the conditions are just marginal – that tide might mess with it, so don’t get your hopes too high. The combined swell energy is sitting at 725 (moderate). Not a write-off, but not a classic. By Monday afternoon, the wind shifts and things get a bit choppy with poor conditions, so that morning window is your best bet.
Tuesday and Wednesday (7-8 July) are more of the same story. We’ve got clean mornings with 2 ft to 4 ft SSW swell, periods around 16-19 seconds – that's proper groundswell – but it’s a persistent cross-onshore wind that’s keeping the surface a little messy. The combined energy bumps up to 857 and 1079 (moderate), so there’s push, but the quality isn’t there for a standout session.
Now, here’s where things get interesting. Thursday morning (9 July) sees a shift in swell direction to the NW with a 8 ft swell. That’s getting into advanced territory – not for the faint-hearted. Period drops to 9 seconds, so it’s a shorter-period windswell, and combined energy is a meaty 1843 (strong). The wind is light and onshore, but the wave quality is still just marginal. It’s powerful, but a little raw. Friday and Saturday (10-11 July) keep that NW swell in the 5 ft to 6 ft range with similar energy levels, but light onshore winds persist. Sunday (12 July) stays about the same, 5 ft to 6 ft, always that cross-onshore breeze. It’s surfable, but nothing that’ll have you ringing your mates.
Then we hit a dry patch. From Monday (13 July) through to Wednesday (15 July), the swell drops back to the 4 ft to 5 ft range, periods shorten to 8-9 seconds, and the wind is consistently cross-onshore or cross. Combined energy dips into the 400s and 500s (weak to moderate). It’s a bit of a lull. I wouldn’t rush out for these days.
But hold onto your board, because Thursday afternoon (16 July) is a real highlight. We’ve got glassy conditions – that’s a major positive. The wind goes calm from the NNW, the swell is 4 ft from the WNW with a 9-second period, and combined energy is 575 (moderate). The forecast says “expect good surf conditions,” and with glass like that, The Slot could be clean and fun. This is your best option in the first half of the outlook.
Friday morning (17 July) brings a jump in size to 7 ft from the WNW, with combined energy leaping to 1454 (strong). That’s a solid groundswell push, but it’s a light cross-onshore wind, so it’s not as clean as Thursday. Still, for the crew who can handle it, there’ll be some meaty ones. Saturday morning (18 July) is similar, with a 7 ft NW swell and 1397 energy (strong). Again, it’s surfable but not perfectly clean.
Finally, keep an eye on Sunday afternoon (19 July) and Monday afternoon (20 July). Sunday afternoon turns glassy again with a 4 ft WNW swell, and the forecast points to good conditions. Monday afternoon is dead calm, glassy, with a tiny 2 ft SSW swell at 16 seconds – combined energy only 445 (weak) – but if you want a longboard cruise in perfect conditions, that’s your window.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year – nothing unusual to report there.
For the standout, Thursday afternoon (16 July) is easily the pick. Glassy conditions, 4 ft WNW swell, moderate energy, and The Slot is a reef break that handles longer-period swell well. Crowds are possible here, so don’t expect solitude. If you can get out that afternoon, that’s the session to aim for. Sunday afternoon (19 July) is a close second for clean, smaller waves.
Overall, there’s a lot of average days, but two clear windows of quality. Make them count.
Rusty.
