The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's shaping up for the next couple of weeks. We're focusing on one spot, so I'll keep it straight.
Right out of the gate, it’s pretty flat and weak. The water's sitting at a balmy 62°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so the boardies will be fine. But that’s where the good news ends for now. The first few days are a write-off with tiny, disorganised swell. You're looking at small, weak waves around 1ft to 2ft with a period around 13-14 seconds, and most of the time there's a light cross-shore breeze messing up what little texture there is. The energy in the water is low, sitting around a weak (117) to moderate (197) range. Honestly, it’s not worth paddling out for the first week unless you just want a floating session.
The pattern does start to show a pulse around Thursday the 28th of August, with the swell from the SSW starting to push a bit more energy into the bay. The combined energy jumps into the 500s by the weekend, which is a solid sign. We start seeing 3ft waves from the SSW on the Saturday the 29th of August afternoon, and the wind tries to clean up a bit with a light cross-offshore from the W. That afternoon window on Saturday the 29th looks like the best bet in this run, with the swell bumping up to 3ft and the clean lines making for decent, fun waves. The period is 16 seconds, so there’s a bit of length and power in there.
But wait, there's a standout lurking further out. By Friday the 4th of September, we get another jump. The SSW swell is pushing 3ft but with a longer 18-second period and the wind is light and cross-offshore from the SW. The energy in the water is strong (409), and the surf is reported as good. This is the one to circle on the calendar.
The 3ft to 3ft range is perfect for all skill levels here; it's not going to mow anyone down. The SSW direction is ideal for this sheltered reef setup at Pleasure Point-First Peak. Crowds can be an issue here often, but on a cleaner morning in late August or early September, the trade-off might be worth it.
From the 31st of August into early September the swell backs off again, dropping back to 2ft - 2ft with the usual messy cross-shore winds. There’s a glimmer on Wednesday the 2nd of September afternoon with a 1ft SSW swell and glassy conditions, but it's barely a ripple.
Best on offer: Saturday the 29th of August afternoon for a solid window, and the standout is Friday morning the 4th of September with the best combination of size, period and clean, offshore-friendly winds. It's a long way out, so treat that last call with a pinch of salt, but the signals are all there. Don't bother with the first week; that's a kite-surfing flat spell. Get the wetsuit ready for the end of the month.
Rusty.
