The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Pleasure Point-First Peak over the next couple of weeks.
It’s a slow start, I won’t lie. The first few days are flat and messy. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak swell and cross-shore winds that just won’t let the place clean up. The water is sitting at 62°F right now, which is a good 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real standout, the ocean feels like a bathtub out there.
The real action doesn’t start to build until Monday, July 20th. That morning, the wind goes glassy, and we get a clean 3ft S swell creeping in. The combined energy is moderate (643), and the period is a decent 14 seconds. It’s not huge, but for a spot that’s been asleep, this is the first sign of life. The following days are a slow build, with Tuesday July 21st afternoon offering a clean 3ft SSW swell with a 15-second period from the west, keeping things tidy.
The standout window, and I mean the one you wait for, is Saturday July 25th. That morning we’ve got a solid 3ft SSW swell pumping in with a very long 21-second period. The combined energy is strong (1146), and the wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean. The direction is a good match for the reef. This is the best of the bunch. The swell is still friendly for most levels, but that long period means it’ll wrap in nicely, with proper lines and longer waits between sets.
Sunday July 26th is also a good call, with a clean 3ft SSW swell in the morning (809 energy), and glassy conditions by the afternoon. The Tuesday July 28th afternoon also looks promising with a 4ft SSW swell and a gentle offshore wind from the WNW – clean and punchy, but that size is getting a bit more serious.
The real standout for the second week is Monday July 27th afternoon. The wind goes glassy, and we get a 4ft SSW swell with a 19-second period. The combined energy is very strong (1022). That’s a proper session, but it’s a long way out, so keep your fingers crossed.
For the rest of the window, it’s a mixed bag of small, clean windows and periods of cross-shore chop. The crowds are “often” here, so expect company, especially on those clean days. Overall, a slow start that builds to a few proper, clean sessions in the last week of July.
Rusty.
