The Lowdown
Right then, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
The first bits of real surf worth paddling out for don't show up until Wednesday the 15th. Before that, the Tuesday afternoon is a write-off – small, weak, and messy. So, a quiet start, but then things get interesting.
The standout window is Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, through to Thursday morning, July 16th. Wednesday afternoon, the swell builds to a solid 8 ft, pushing in from the SW with a very long 17-second period. That's proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy reading is through the roof at 3146 (moderate to strong). The magic bit is the wind – it's glassy. That'll have Eerste Steen looking absolutely perfect. This is one for the experienced crew, as 8 ft with that kind of power is no joke for beginners. The water is sitting at 56°, which is a fair bit colder than average for this time of year – a good 4° down, so you'll want a decent wetsuit.
Thursday morning keeps the quality going. Still an 8 ft SW swell, period dropping slightly to 13 seconds, but still holding plenty of energy (2381). And again, glassy conditions. The wind swings a touch on Thursday afternoon, so the morning is the pick.
Friday the 17th offers a good option too. The swell drops back to 7 ft from the SW (11-second period, 897 energy), but with a light SE cross-offshore breeze, it'll be clean. It's a bit more manageable, still a solid wave.
Then things get weird. From Saturday the 18th, the swell gets a bit jumbled, and the wind isn't as clean. There's a fun little window Saturday morning with a glassy 3 ft SW groundswell (14-second period, 503 energy), but it's small. Not the main event.
The big story is what happens from the 21st of July onwards. The swell just keeps getting bigger. By Tuesday the 21st, we're looking at 13 ft SW swells with a 15-second period and energy readings over 7000. That's serious, heavy water. The forecasts are consistently saying the swell is too big for this break. It's expert-only territory, and even then, you'd have to be a lunatic. That big energy continues right through until the end of the month, with waves between 10 ft and 15 ft. The wind is often favorable, but the size is the limiting factor. For a beach-and-reef setup like this, with that much swell and strong winds forecast later on, it might be more of a kite surfer's playground than a paddle surfer's paradise.
So, to wrap it up: the best bet is Wednesday afternoon, July 15th, and Thursday morning, July 16th. Get on it while the getting's good. The long-range stuff from the 21st onwards is massive but keep an eye on the forecasts – if it drops a touch, it could be epic for the brave.
Rusty.
