The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Eerste Steen.
The week starts off with a bit of a slow build, but the real action is further out. Friday the 17th kicks things off with a nice clean window. The morning is glassy, a light SE breeze, and a solid 6ft SW groundswell at 11 seconds. The water is a bit colder than normal for this time of year at 56°, running about 3° cooler than usual, so you’ll want a good wetsuit. The combined energy is moderate (773). This is a genuine standout for the first few days: clean, good size, and the swell direction is spot on for the SW optimum. It’s a fairly consistent break, so expect decent waves, but it can get busy here at times.
The afternoon on Friday turns a bit marginal with a cross-on wind, so the morning is the clear winner. Saturday the 18th morning is glassy again with a smaller 5ft SW swell, but clean. Saturday afternoon gets a bit messy with the wind. Sunday the 19th sees a mix of cross and cross-on winds, keeping the surf quality from being great. The cleanest mornings are definitely Friday and Saturday.
Then we hit a bit of a lull with smaller surf Monday and Tuesday, but the wind stays light. The real standout of the entire forecast is shaping up for the 24th of July. The morning has a massive 13ft SW groundswell with a very long 16-second period, and the wind is clean and light cross-shore. The combined energy is through the roof (7312). However, this is way too big for this break at Eerste Steen. It’s likely only for the most experienced, and even then, it’s questionable. The afternoon is similarly huge. That same day, the wind shifts, but the size remains extreme.
The next big window to keep an eye on is the 31st of July into the 1st of August. The morning of the 31st has a glassy 7ft SSW swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy is strong (1448). The report says it’s excellent for experienced surfers, so it’s a solid pick for the very end of the month. Then the 1st of August morning has a clean 4ft SSW groundswell, also glassy, with a very long 14-second period and strong energy (1033). The afternoon of the 1st is glassy too, with a 4ft W swell that has a super long period of 21 seconds, but a lot of energy (2342). That’s a very promising, long-range call.
The 22nd through the 24th of July sees a lot of big, powerful swell, but the wind is mostly cross or onshore, keeping the quality from being perfect. The 25th and 26th get blown out by strong winds, so avoid those. The 27th to the 30th brings back cleaner conditions with smaller, manageable swells, but nothing that jumps out as a must-surf compared to the early and late standouts.
The best bet for the cleanest, most manageable surf that’s good for a wider range of surfers is the morning of Friday the 17th and the morning of Saturday the 18th. For the experienced crew, the 31st of July morning and the 1st of August are looking promising, but keep in mind that’s a long way out.
Rusty.
