The Lowdown
Righto, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Eerste Steen over the next couple of weeks.
First up, if you’re paddling out at Eerste Steen, fair warning – the water is sitting at 55° right now, which is a solid five degrees colder than what’s normal for this time of year. That’s properly unusual, so you’ll want a good thick steamer. The good news is the swell is running with a solid 8 ft from the WSW at 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is punchy at 2354, so there’s some grunt behind it. Given the direction is SW and Eerste Steen really wants that SW, it’s lining up nicely. With a N wind at 9 mph blowing cross-off, conditions are set to be clean for the Monday morning. This is a fairly exposed spot, fairly consistent, and it’s an intermediate-level wave – but at this size, it’s not one for beginners.
Monday afternoon turns a bit average with the wind swinging onshore, so the morning is the clear winner.
Tuesday the 18th and Wednesday the 19th see the swell hanging in around 8 ft to 8 ft, but the wind is either cross or cross-onshore, so you’re looking at some chop. Nothing special there.
Now, Thursday the 20th morning – that’s a standout. The swell jumps to 12 ft from the SW at 13 seconds, with combined energy up at 3425. That’s a lot of water moving. Wind is a light 9 mph from the south, keeping it clean and cross. But honestly, this size is getting into expert territory – it’s going to be big and powerful. Not the day to be learning.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd are smaller and choppier, nothing to rush for.
Sunday the 23rd offers a 7 ft swell from WSW with a 13-second period, cross wind from the south at 9 mph – decent enough for a session, but not a standout.
Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th are mixed. The 25th morning brings 8 ft from the SW at 13 seconds with cross wind, but it’s not super clean.
Now, here’s a little pocket of goodness: Wednesday the 26th. Morning brings 6 ft from the SW at 13 seconds with a cross-off wind from SSE at 3 mph – that is going to be clean. Then in the afternoon, the wind goes glassy with NW at 3 mph and swell drops to 6 ft from the WSW at 12 seconds. That’s the kind of session you dream about. Combined energy is modest at 910, but the conditions will be smooth as a lake.
Thursday the 27th morning stays clean with 5 ft and a cross-off wind, but it’s smaller.
Then we get a big swell pulse again on Friday the 28th – 8 ft from the WSW at a very long 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy at 2782. Wind is light cross from SSE. This will push through nicely, but the long period might make it a bit straight at a beach break. Eerste Steen handles it better than most.
Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th get windy and messy – the 30th has a 19 mph southerly, so don’t bother.
Monday the 31st sees another massive pulse – 12 ft from SW at 14 seconds, energy at 4757. Again, that’s expert-only, and the wind is moderate cross. Good if you’ve got the skills.
Finally, Tuesday the 1st of September – morning is glassy with a ENE wind at 3 mph and 10 ft from the SW at 12 seconds. Clean, powerful, and for experienced surfers only.
The standout picks for the whole period? Wednesday morning 26th August for the clean, smaller combo, and Friday morning 28th August for the big, long-period groundswell with light winds. Get on it.
Rusty.
