The Lowdown
Alright, surfers, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the menu at Eerste Steen over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a real mixed bag coming – some serious size and energy, but finding that clean, glassy window is going to be the trick.
The water is sitting at a cold 55°, which is a whopping 5° colder than normal for this time of year. That’s well into “extra rubber” territory, so don’t even think about the shorty.
The pick of the bunch, the real standout, is shaping up to be Tuesday morning, the 25th of August. The swell is a solid 7 ft from the WSW, packing strong energy (1485) and a nice 13-second interval. But the real beauty is the wind – a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE is forecast to keep things clean. That’s the session to circle on the calendar for experienced surfers.
Before that, Wednesday the 19th kicks off with an 8 ft SW swell, but a 9 mph cross wind from the S will put a bit of chop on it. The energy is strong (1866), but the conditions will be ordinary. Thursday the 20th jumps up to a 10 ft SW groundswell (13 seconds) with very strong energy (3422), but again, it’s cross-shore winds. That’s a lot of power for a beach break, and it might be more of a challenge than a pleasure.
The swell drops right off over the following weekend. Saturday the 22nd has poor surf conditions with tiny 4 ft to 4 ft waves and onshore winds. Sunday the 23rd sees a re-set with 8 ft from the WSW (1726 energy), but the wind is cross-on.
After that Tuesday window, things get interesting again on Thursday the 27th. The swell is small at 4 ft from the WSW, but we get an offshore wind from the NE in the morning. Then, on Thursday afternoon, it goes glassy with a 4 ft WSW swell. That’s a sneaky-good window for a log on clean, small waves.
Now, for the real heavy stuff. The last weekend of August and into September is looking wild. Saturday the 29th of August has a massive 13 ft SSW swell with very strong energy (4275). The wind looks clean, but the data warns that this is simply too big for this break – expert-only territory. On the 31st of August, we’re looking at an 8 ft, 15-second SW groundswell (2865 energy), but with onshore wind. That long period will make it dumpy and unruly at a beach break.
Looking way out, Tuesday the 1st of September offers a glimmer of hope. A 7 ft WSW swell with a 14-second period and glassy conditions from a light SSE breeze in the morning. That’s excellent for experienced surfers, but a long-range call so keep an eye on it. Then Thursday the 3rd of September is another big one – a 10 ft W swell with offshore NE winds, but that’s another one for experts only.
Overall, we have a long stretch of surfable swell, but quality windows are rare. If you aren't an expert, focus on the cleaner, smaller days. If you are an expert, the 25th of August morning and maybe the 1st of September morning are your best bets.
Stay frosty, and don’t forget the booties.
Rusty.
