The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for our local stretch, Eerste Steen.
The next couple of weeks are a bit of a mixed bag for Eerste Steen. Thursday the 20th kicks off with a solid but messy 10ft SW swell, but it’s got a cross-shore wind on it and the water’s a proper shocker at 56°, which is a full 4° colder than it should be for this time of year, much colder than normal. That Thursday is honestly a write-off, just a lumpy, borderline situation.
We get a bit of a breather and a clean-up on Friday the 21st morning. The swell drops to a more manageable 7ft from the SW, with an 11-second period and a light cross-offshore breeze from the SE. The energy is moderate (3422 combined energy), and the conditions are clean. It’s not a standout, but it’s a solid start for an intermediate surfer.
The real standout, the one you want to circle in your calendar, is Tuesday the 25th. The morning session is calling. We’ve got a 7ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period, and a light cross-offshore breeze from the ESE making it clean. The combined energy is strong (2101). That long period from the SW is meaty and will wrap in nicely here. It’s going to be excellent for experienced surfers, offering proper, powerful lines. Just be aware, this spot can get a crowd sometimes.
Wednesday the 26th afternoon offers a nice little window too, with a smaller 4ft WSW swell and glassy conditions. It’s only for the lightweights, but for a fun, clean, low-key session it’s a treat.
Further out, there’s a big pulse forecast for the 1st of September. Tuesday the 1st afternoon shows an 12ft SW swell with a 15-second period and light cross-onshore wind. The energy is massive (4544 combined energy), but this is getting into big, expert-only territory and the wind isn’t ideal. Then the 2nd of September looks completely blown out with strong winds, so don’t get your hopes up for that one.
The long-range stuff around the 4th of September shows some potential for clean morning glass with small 4ft swell, but it’s a fair way off and the energy is weak (528).
So, all in all, the pick of the week is easily Tuesday the 25th morning. That’s the one with the grunt and the clean conditions for the experienced crew. A few other smaller windows for a paddle, but nothing else that really jumps out and grabs you.
Rusty.
