The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into this one for Eerste Steen, because there’s a lot to unpack in this 16-day window.
The overall pattern is a slow start, but once it gets going, it ramps up into some serious size. The first few days are there, but the real standout is a couple of mornings in the second week when the conditions line up perfectly for experienced surfers.
We’re looking at a Friday morning (17 July) that kicks things off with a clean 6ft SW swell, period of 11 seconds, and glassy conditions with ESE wind at just 3 mph. The combined wave energy is moderate (773). Perfect for an intermediate surfer to get a nice session in. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Then there’s a bit of a lull over the weekend and into Monday, with smaller, cleaner swells in the 4ft to 5ft range. The Tuesday morning (21 July) is a real standout though. The swell jumps to 5ft from the SW, but with a long 14-second period, the combined energy jumps to very strong (1029). And with glassy, offshore ENE wind at 3 mph, this is going to be a high-quality, clean session. Crowds are possible here, so get there early.
The week of the 22nd gets big. Wednesday (22 July) is a write-off – 10ft SW swell with a 19 mph crosswind and rain. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, the wind is a mess. The Thursday morning (23 July) is a gem for the brave. The swell is 5ft from the WSW, 12-second period, with clean, cross-offshore wind from the N at 6 mph. The energy is very strong (1551). This is a true standout for experienced surfers, offering clean, powerful lines.
The following week is a blast of big, clean SW groundswells. Friday morning (24 July) has 10ft from the SW at 15 seconds and clean cross-off wind. This is massive, expert-only territory, but the quality is undeniable. The Sunday morning (26 July) sees another 12ft SW swell, but with a moderate 16 mph cross-off wind, it’s a bit chunkier. The Monday afternoon (27 July) is a nice drop back to a very clean 5ft, glassy, with a 14-second period – a perfect recovery session. The Tuesday morning (28 July) is another absolute beauty: 4ft of WSW swell but with a 19-second period! This is a very long-period groundswell that will hold up perfectly at Eerste Steen, offering smooth, long rides. The combined energy is very strong (1425), and with glassy conditions, it’s a top-tier pick for experienced surfers.
The final days of the outlook see a mix of clean, moderate swells. The Friday morning (31 July) starts with a clean 6ft from the WSW at 12 seconds, and the Saturday morning (1 August) wraps up with a 6ft WSW swell at a very long 19 seconds under clean cross-off wind – another excellent session for experienced surfers.
To sum it up, the best on offer is the Thursday morning (23 July) for the clean, powerful 5ft WSW swell, and the Tuesday morning (28 July) for the incredibly long-period, glassy, high-quality 4ft WSW swell. These are the two standouts. The swell does get over 8ft from the 23rd to the 26th, which is only for experienced surfers. The crowds are sometimes a factor here, so keep that in mind.
Rusty.
