The Lowdown

Alright, this is Rusty, and let’s talk about Eerste Steen in the coming weeks. It’s a bit of a rollercoaster, but there are some real gems if you pick your moments.

The water is sitting at 56°, which is a solid 4° colder than it should be for this time of year. That’s a noticeable chill, so don’t even think about ditching the wetsuit.

We’ve got a run of swell starting Wednesday, July 15th, but honestly, it’s not the best. Wednesday morning sees a 4ft WSW swell with a very long 17-second period, and the combined energy is a hefty 1187 (moderate). The wind is light and cross from the NW, so it’s a bit bumpy. The afternoon gets bigger, 8ft from the SW, but the wind shifts cross-on, making it messy. Not the day for it.

Now, Thursday, July 16th, is where it starts to get interesting. The morning is glassy – absolutely glassy – with a solid 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds. That’s a lot of power (2381 energy), and it’s clean. This is proper intermediate territory, maybe a bit much for beginners, but for experienced surfers, this is a standout. The wind is a light SSE, so we’re looking at perfection. The afternoon on Thursday is still good at 8ft, but the wind comes cross-on, so stick to the morning session.

Friday, July 17th, is another beauty. Glassy conditions again for the morning with a 6ft SW swell, 11-second period. The energy is a bit lower (787), but the conditions are so clean it’s hard to complain. The afternoon stays glassy with a 6ft swell, but it’s backing off.

Saturday, July 18th, the swell drops. A 3ft WSW swell in the morning with glassy conditions is a nice small-wave option, but the afternoon gets tricky with a 6ft SW swell and onshore wind. Sunday and Monday are similar, with wind and tide issues making it a marginal call.

Now, hold onto your board. Tuesday, July 21st, is a monster. A 15ft SW swell rolls in with a 15-second period. The energy is insane – 8525 – but it’s just too big for this break. The wind is right, but the swell is way too large for most. This is big-wave territory, expert only, and even then, it’s pushing it.

Wednesday, July 22nd, is a write-off. A 10ft swell but with a 35 km/h cross-off wind that’s howling. It’s clean, but the wind is too strong for comfortable paddle surfing. This setup would be more interesting for kite surfing than a standard surf session.

Thursday, July 23rd, we’re back to a massive 16ft SW swell. Again, the wind is light and cross, but at 16ft, it’s just too big for this spot.

The real standout in the second week is Friday, July 24th, in the morning. An 8ft WSW swell at 13 seconds with a light SE cross-off wind. The energy is 4123, and the conditions are clean. This is excellent for experienced surfers – a true highlight.

The rest of the period into the end of July sees a lot of 7ft to 10ft swell, but the wind is usually cross or cross-on, keeping it marginal. The last day, July 30th, has a nice 6ft SW swell with clean conditions from a light SE cross-off wind, which is a solid way to finish the run.

Best on offer? Without a doubt, Thursday, July 16th morning, and Friday, July 17th, for the glassy, clean conditions. The Friday, July 24th morning is a close second for the quality of the swell. The crowds at Eerste Steen can be a problem, so get in early.

Rusty.
