The Lowdown

Alright, gather 'round. Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin' for the next couple of weeks.

The swell window is open for Eerste Steen, and we’ve got a proper run of pulses coming in from the south-west. The water is running at 58°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year, but not out of the ordinary. The combined energy is moderate to strong, hitting 687 (moderate) early on, but it builds into some serious numbers.

Saturday the 18th is a bit of a write-off. We’ve got a 3ft SW swell, but the wind is a messy cross-on, and the energy is weak. The surf is marginal. It’s not worth paddling out for.

Sunday the 19th looks better. The morning brings a 5ft SW swell with a cross-off wind, so the face is clean. The energy picks up to 743 (moderate). The afternoon gets a bit bigger, 6ft, with onshore wind, so it’s a bit bumpy. The morning is your window.

Monday the 20th morning is glassy with a 6ft SW swell. The period is a bit short at 9 seconds, so it’s a bit softer, but the glassy conditions make it fun. The energy is 612 (moderate). The afternoon gets smaller and onshore, so morning is the call.

Now, here’s the standout. Tuesday the 21st is the best morning of the first week. The wind is glassy, the swell is a solid 6ft from the SW, and the period is a long 14 seconds. That’s proper groundswell, and the energy is pumping at 1516 (strong). This is a big, clean, powerful swell. It’s a bit too big for beginners, but for intermediates and up, this is a session to remember. The afternoon is even bigger at 8ft, still glassy, with energy at 2118 (very strong). This is a full day of excellent surf.

Wednesday the 22nd is still solid, with a 7ft SW swell, but the wind swings cross-off in the morning, keeping it clean. The energy is 1261 (strong). The afternoon gets a bit rough with a 16 mph cross-wind, so the morning is better.

Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are a bit mixed. Thursday has a 7ft WSW swell, but the wind is cross, so it’s a bit choppy. Friday the 24th morning is a monster: 10ft SW swell, glassy, and energy at 3936 (very strong). This is expert territory. The afternoon is cross-on, so the morning is the only window.

Moving into the second week: Saturday the 25th morning is excellent, with a 8ft SW swell, clean cross-off wind, and energy at 1912 (strong). Sunday the 26th morning is glassy with a 6ft SW swell, nice and clean. Monday the 27th is a bit messy with cross-winds, but the swell is still 7ft.

The real standout in the second week is Sunday the 2nd of August morning. The forecast is very promising. We’re looking at a 8ft SW swell with a period of 17 seconds, off-shore wind, and energy at 3846 (very strong). This is a long-period groundswell that will be hitting the point breaks and reefs with power. The sets will be longer, but the waves will be well-shaped. The afternoon is a bit smaller at 8ft, but still solid. Keep an eye on this one, as it’s a bit far out, but it looks like a classic.

Honestly, Tuesday the 21st is the absolute pinnacle of the forecast. The combination of glassy wind, a strong 6ft SW groundswell, and solid energy is unbeatable. If you can only get one session, that’s the one.

Rusty.
