The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve got the lowdown on the next couple of weeks at Eerste Steen. It’s a mixed bag, but there’s a couple of windows that’ll get the blood pumping.
We start off from Thursday the 20th of August, and it’s a bit of a slow grind. The first few days are looking marginal, with a solid 10ft SW swell on Thursday but the wind is cross, so it’s gonna be a bit scratchy. The combined energy is strong at 3422, but it’s not lining up perfectly. Swell drops a bit Friday, and the onshores creep in Saturday afternoon. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so don’t stress about a wetsuit.
The real standout is Tuesday the 25th of August. The morning session is looking clean, with a 7ft SW swell, 14-second period, and a cross-off breeze. The combined energy is strong at 1804, and it’s rated excellent for experienced surfers – this is a serious window. The swell direction is right on the optimum from the SW, and the wind is offshore-friendly. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Friday the 28th of August also has a promising morning with a 7ft WSW swell and clean cross-off wind, but the afternoon goes downhill with a choppy onshore. The last week is a mixed bag of strong winds and lumpy seas, so don’t get your hopes up too high for consistency.
The absolute gem is Monday the 31st of August. We’ve got a 12ft WSW swell, 13-second period, and a glassy early morning wind. The combined energy is massive at 4241, but it’s a big one – over 8ft, so this is for experts only. The break is fairly exposed, and with that size, it’ll be a proper challenge. The cross-off breeze keeps it clean, but it’s a heavy paddle.
Overall, Tuesday the 25th and Monday the 31st are your best shots. The rest is a bit of a wait-and-see, with a lot of cross-shore winds and chop. Stay sharp, and don’t sleep on those morning windows.
