The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Alright, let's get into what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks at Eerste Steen.
The forecast is a real mixed bag. We've got a bit of a wait for the good stuff, but there's a few windows where the stars align for some proper fun. The water temp is sitting at 55°F which is 5°F colder than normal for this time of year, so it's bloody chilly – you'll need a thick steamer and maybe some booties.
First up, the standout session is hands down Sunday morning, August 23rd. The swell is a solid 8ft from the WSW, and the wind is glassy – dead flat, offshore from the SSE. That's a magic combo for a clean, lined-up wave. The period is 13 seconds, giving it some real grunt and shape, with a combined energy of 1674, which is solid. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It's a fair size though, so it's more for the experienced crew.
Sunday afternoon, the wind shifts to a cross-shore, but the swell is still a decent 7ft. It'll be a bit bumpier, but still surfable.
Monday the 24th is a drop-off in quality. The swell drops to 6ft in the morning and 4ft in the afternoon, with a cross-shore wind picking up. It's a bit scrappy, not the best.
Tuesday the 25th has a nice clean morning with a 7ft SW swell (14-second period, 2002 energy) and a cross-offshore wind from the SE. That's a quality wave, but the wind is a bit stronger. This is another great option for the intermediate to advanced surfer.
The rest of that week, from Wednesday the 26th through to Friday the 28th, sees the swell drop back to 4ft to 5ft. The mornings are clean, but the energy is low. It's a bit of a waiting game with small, weak waves.
Then we hit a rough patch. Saturday the 29th gets windy, and Sunday the 30th sees a 10ft swell but with a fresh cross-shore and a risk of thunderstorms. The wind ruins it, and the sets will be lumpy and messy. By Monday the 31st, the swell is still big (6ft to 10ft) but the wind is cross-on, so it's pretty average.
The first week of September is a write-off for clean surfing. The swell is huge, well over 8ft, and into the 16ft to 20ft range with massive energy (up to 27602). The wind is atrocious, often onshore or strong cross-shore, making it a mess. It's honestly more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The size is for experts only, but the conditions are poor.
Now, look ahead to the second week. The standout is Sunday morning, September 6th. We get a 6ft swell from the WSW with a very long 20-second period and a clean offshore wind from the ENE. The energy is 4196. That's a beautiful, long-period groundswell. It'll be glassy and perfect for a point break or reef setup like Eerste Steen. The long period means it will be powerful and have long lulls, making the paddle out easier. This is a promising one, but it's a long way off, so keep an eye on it.
The following Sunday afternoon, the swell jumps to 10ft with an 18-second period, but the wind goes cross-on, so it'll be a bit lumpy and more for the experienced.
For the rest of the second week, the swell is big and the wind is mostly strong and from the wrong direction. It's a big, windy, stormy pattern. Not much to get excited about.
So, to sum it up: your best bet is Sunday morning, August 23rd, and Tuesday morning, August 25th. The long-range possibility on Sunday, September 6th, is also worth a watch, but it's a week and a half away so don't book the trip just yet.
Rusty.
