Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Muizenberg has in store for us over the next couple of weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but there are definitely some sessions to get excited about.
We kick off this week with a real treat. The surf window opens on Monday, July 6th, with clean, glassy conditions. We've got a solid 5ft swell rolling in from the WSW with a nice 11-second period. The wave energy is moderate at 577, and it feels good out there. This is about as good as it gets for a Monday morning session.
The quality holds through Tuesday the 7th, with the swell picking up just a touch to 5ft from the SW and the period stretching to 12 seconds, pushing the energy up to a moderate 639 in the morning and a punchy 927 by the afternoon. The wind stays light and cross-offshore, keeping things clean. This is the pick of the first few days – consistent, good size, and clean.
Then we hit Wednesday morning, July 8th, and things get interesting. The swell holds at 5ft from the SW, but the period bumps to 13 seconds and the energy jumps to a solid 1148. It's an excellent window for experienced surfers. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’ll be clean. The 5ft size with that longer period means some proper lines, but it will be a bit more powerful. If you've got the skills, this is a standout session. For beginners, the 5ft is starting to get a little big, and the crowd here at Muizenberg (often busy) will be out for this one.
Unfortunately, that's the end of the good run for a while. From Wednesday afternoon through to the end of the following week, things go downhill. The wind swings onshore from the SSE and SE, turning the surf into a messy, choppy affair. The swell remains decent in size at times, but the wind ruins it. On Thursday the 9th we even see a 7ft SW swell, but with a 30 km/h onshore wind, it's blown out. That energy reading of 1603 is high, but it's wasted. The surf just won't be any fun.
There's a bit of a lull from around the 12th through the 14th, with small, weak swells and mostly poor conditions. Not much to write home about.
Now, looking further out, there are a few promising signals. The big one is on Thursday, July 16th. The morning session looks absolutely firing. We're looking at a 8ft groundswell from the SW with a very long 14-second period. The combined energy is a very strong 2332. The wind is forecast to be glassy, from the SE. This is a powerhouse session for experts only – that 8ft is too big for most. The waves will be powerful and lined up. If you are an experienced surfer, circle this date. It's a long way off, so keep an eye on the forecast, but it has serious potential.
A few days later, on Tuesday, July 21st, we have another one to watch. A 6ft SW swell with a very long 15-second period hits, with a big energy reading of 1474. And the wind? Absolutely dead calm, glassy. This could be an absolutely stunning day of clean, long-period groundswell. It's a more manageable size than the 16th, so advanced intermediates could be in for a treat. Definitely one to mark on the calendar.
So to sum it up: the first few days, especially Wednesday the 8th morning, are the immediate standouts. After that, it’s a write-off for over a week, but we have two very promising long-range windows on July 16th and 21st that could be truly excellent. Stay tuned.
Rusty.
