Right on, folks. Rusty here. Let’s get into what’s on the cards for the False Bay corner.
First up, the water is sitting at about 58°, which is a bit colder than you’d normally expect for this time of year at the long, sandy stretch of Muizenberg. The swell window is open though, and we’ve got a mixed bag coming our way.
Things start promising enough. Friday afternoon (3 July) brings a clean 3ft SW groundswell with a moderate offshore wind. The energy’s moderate (241) but the shape should be there. Saturday (4 July) morning is too small to bother with, but the afternoon sees a nice jump: a proper 2ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period and a light offshore breeze. Clean, lined-up waves for sure.
Sunday (5 July) is similar – a little bumpy in the morning, but the afternoon cleans right up with that NNW offshore and 3ft SW swell. Good fun. Then Monday morning (6 July) is where it starts to get real. Glassy conditions, 5ft WSW groundswell (12-second period) and the energy jumps big time (746). This is clean, solid surf. The afternoon gets a touch of cross-shore, but still rideable at 5ft.
The standout of the whole outlook, though, is Monday 16 days out – sorry, let me be clear: Monday 16 July. We’ve got a 7ft SW groundswell at 14 seconds with glassy conditions, zero wind, and the energy is pumping (2041). That is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The quality is through the roof. Don't be fooled, though – at this size and period, the sets will be powerful and the take-off zones will be demanding. It’s a day for the crew who know their way around a bigger wave. The afternoon (16 July) holds just as good – 7ft from the SSW, glassy again, and energy of 1667. Magic.
The days in between are a mixed ride. From the 8th to the 10th, it’s mostly onshore and messy. Wednesday the 8th has 5-6ft SW swell but the 22 mph SE wind will chop it up. The 9th and 10th are nothing to get excited about either. By Saturday morning the 11th, we’re back in business: glassy conditions, 5ft SSW swell (944 energy) – a solid, clean session.
The 12th and 13th calm down into a smaller 2-3ft run, but the wind gets a bit wild into Monday the 13th. Then Tuesday the 14th has a clean 4ft WSW swell with an offshore breeze kicking in by afternoon – a nice little window.
Then that big run from the 15th to the 17th: 7-8ft SW swells with some of the best conditions of the outlook. Wednesday the 15th afternoon has a 7ft SW groundswell (13 secs), offshore wind, and an excellent rating. The energy is huge (1668). Again, this is for the experienced crew. The 16th, as I said, is the top pick.
The 17th drops to 6ft but stays clean with offshore wind. The 18th will be a smaller, glassy morning in the 4ft range but the wind switches onshore by afternoon.
So here’s the skinny: The best session this whole period is Monday the 16th – early and late – with clean, overhead SW groundswell. Second place goes to the 15th (Wednesday) afternoon. The next best might be the 17th (Friday) morning. There is a lot of average stuff in between, but with the consistent clean spells and those few big swells, it’s definitely worth staying tuned.
Stay salty.
Rusty.
