The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie, I’m lookin’ at the charts for the next couple weeks, and I’ve got to say, it’s a bit of a slow dance at first, but we’ve got some real gems hidden in there. Let’s get into it.
First, the water at Muizenberg is sitting right around average for this time of year, so no need to dig out the extra thick steamer just yet.
The forecast starts with a bit of a lull, but Sunday, the 19th rolls in with a solid push. That morning, we’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the WSW, period of 12 seconds, and the wind is a moderate offshore from the NNW. The energy is solid (583), and the waves are looking pretty good. Not a standout, but a nice way to kick things off.
Now, for the real standout of the first week—Tuesday morning, the 21st. This is the one. The wind goes glassy, dead calm from the NE, and we get a 6ft swell from the SSW with a 14-second period. That’s a long-period groundswell, and the energy is pumping (1079). This is going to be clean, lined up, and for experienced surfers only. The long period will make it a bit walled at the beach, but for a point or a reef, it’s heaven. This is the best on offer in the first week.
The rest of the week is a mix. Wednesday the 22nd is clean with a gentle offshore in the morning, but the swell drops a bit. Thursday the 23rd has a clean offshore in the afternoon with a 4ft swell from the SW, but it’s not going to blow you away. Friday the 24th gets a bit lumpy with cross-on winds and a bigger 8ft swell from the SW, but the wind messes it up. Saturday the 25th is a write-off with onshore winds.
Then we get a second wind on Sunday the 26th. The afternoon is exceptional: glassy conditions, 5ft swell from the SSW, and a very long 15-second period. The energy is high (1253), and this is another one for the experienced crew. Perfectly clean.
The second week gets messy. Monday the 27th and Tuesday the 28th are blown out with strong onshore winds and a lot of energy (2667 on Monday morning), but it’s poor quality. The swell is getting too big (8ft on Tuesday) and the wind is howling. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.
There’s a brief glimmer on Wednesday the 29th afternoon when the wind drops to glassy, and we get a 7ft swell from the SSE, but the period is a short 8 seconds. It’s a lot of energy (907) but it’s going to be a bit lumpy and messy at the beach. Not a classic.
The final true standout is on Sunday, the 2nd of August in the afternoon. Clean offshore wind from the WNW, a 5ft swell from the SW, and a very long 16-second period. The energy is high (1137). This is a long-range call, so it’s a bit of a promise, but it looks like a beautiful, clean, powerful swell to end the period. And then Monday the 3rd looks even better with a 6ft, 15-second swell and a gentle offshore wind. That’s a great way to kick off the new week.
So, to sum it up: your best bets are Tuesday morning the 21st, Sunday afternoon the 26th, and Sunday afternoon the 2nd of August. The long-period stuff will be best at a point or a reef. The rest of the time, it’s a mix of clean but small, or just too windy. Keep an eye on that second week—it’s promising but not locked in.
Rusty.
