The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for the Cape Town stretch over the next couple of weeks.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but don’t walk away. The first real call is for Friday morning, July 17th, at Muizenberg. It’s not going to be huge, but the conditions are looking sweet. We’re talking a 4ft swell from the SW with a period of 11 seconds, and the wind is dead calm – glassy as a mirror. Combined wave energy is moderate at 417. The water is sitting at 58°, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year, so you’ll want that 5/4. This is a beginner-friendly spot, but it’s inconsistent, so you’ll need to be patient. It’s exposed to the swell, and the optimum direction is SE, but we’re getting SW. Still, with glassy conditions, it’ll be clean fun.
Saturday the 18th is looking even better. Morning and afternoon are both clean with offshore winds from the NW at 6 mph. Swell hangs around 3ft to 3ft from the SW, period around 9 seconds. Energy is moderate (337 and 409). This is a solid, small-wave day for a longboard or a foiler.
Sunday the 19th morning is a standout. The swell bumps up a touch to 4ft from the SW, but the period stretches to 12 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. With a gentle offshore breeze from the NNW at 9 mph, it’s going to be clean and lined up. Energy is moderate at 405. The afternoon turns a bit cross-shore, so get out early.
Monday the 20th is another glassy morning session with light winds and a 4ft SW swell (11s period). Energy is 325. Afternoon drops off a bit.
Now, here’s the real juice. Tuesday, July 21st afternoon is the first true standout of the period. The swell hits 6ft from the SW, but the period is a juicy 14 seconds. The wind goes glassy again, dead calm. The combined energy jumps to 1158 – that’s strong wave energy. For experienced surfers, this is going to be exceptional. The morning is also very good with a 4ft SSW swell at 14 seconds and light cross-offshore winds.
Wednesday the 22nd keeps the energy going. Morning sees a 6ft SW swell (13s) with a moderate cross-offshore breeze (12 mph NNW). The afternoon gets even better: 7ft from the WSW, 13-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the NW at 12 mph. Energy is strong at 1364. This is expert territory.
Thursday, July 23rd afternoon is the absolute peak of the entire forecast. We’re looking at a 10ft swell from the SW with a very long period of 18 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the WNW at 6 mph. The combined energy is a massive 5821 – that’s very strong wave energy. This is exceptional, expert-only surf. Muizenberg is a beach break, so that long period will make it a bit more walled up, but for the crew who know what they’re doing, it’s going to be a session to remember.
Friday the 24th is still big, 8ft to 10ft, but the wind turns cross-onshore, putting a bit of chop on the face. Still big and powerful, but not as clean.
Saturday the 25th is a write-off. The wind howls onshore at 31 mph from the SE. The swell is still there, but it’s messy and dangerous. Don’t even think about it.
Sunday the 26th bounces back beautifully. Glassy winds from the east, 7ft to 7ft SW swell with a very long period of 16-17 seconds. Energy is very strong (around 2900). Excellent for experienced surfers, clean and powerful.
The start of the next week (July 27th and 28th) stays good with clean conditions and solid 6ft to 4ft SW groundswells, before it fades into smaller, less clean waves towards the end of July.
There’s a gap of a few days of small, poor conditions, then Thursday, July 30th afternoon fires up again. A 10ft swell from the WSW with a 12-second period, and a gentle offshore breeze from the NNW. Energy is 2316. That’s another expert-only day.
The final few days of the forecast (July 31st and August 1st) keep that big, clean swell going with offshore winds, before the window closes.
The standout picks: If you’re an expert, don’t miss the afternoon of Thursday, July 23rd. For the strong intermediate crew, Tuesday afternoon, July 21st, and Sunday morning, July 26th, are your best bets for clean, powerful waves without the extreme size.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
