The Lowdown
G'day, it's Rusty here, taking a look at the next stretch from Muizenberg. Right off the bat, things are looking a bit grim, but there's a light at the end of the tunnel. The water's sitting at 57°, which is a bit colder than we'd normally expect for this time of year, so you'll want the full wetsuit.
The first few days are a write-off. Friday’s a total mess with onshore winds and poor surf, and the weekend isn't much better. Saturday morning shows a small pulse but it's not worth getting excited about. We're looking at a real dry spell here, with nothing worthwhile from Friday through to next Thursday. That's a solid week of no good options, so don't hold your breath.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope comes next Friday, the 28th. The morning is glassy with a clean 3ft southwest swell and a long 14-second period. It's small, but it's clean. Then the afternoon steps it up a notch. The swell bumps to 4ft, the period stretches out to a very long 16 seconds, and the wind swings cross-offshore. This is the standout of the first week. The wave energy is moderate (804 combined), but the conditions are just right for a fun session. This long-period groundswell will be looking for a point or reef to wrap around, which is good news for a spot like this.
Saturday the 29th keeps the energy going with a cross-offshore breeze and a building swell. By the afternoon it's pushing 6ft, but the period drops back to 9 seconds, which makes it a bit more crumbly. It’s fun, but not as clean as the day before.
Then it goes quiet again. Sunday and Monday are blown out by strong southeasterly winds. Tuesday the 1st of September has a glassy morning with a tiny 2ft swell, but it's super ordinary. We're back in the doldrums for a few more days.
Alright, but here’s where it gets interesting. Wednesday the 2nd of September is the real standout of the whole period, but you gotta be careful. The morning sees a solid 7ft southwest swell with a strong 16-second period and a cross-offshore wind. The energy is strong (2303 combined) and the surf is going to be pumping. This is a serious step up in size and power. The afternoon gets even bigger, jumping to 8ft and the energy goes through the roof to 5209. This is a powerful, heavy groundswell. This is not for beginners. At over 8ft, this is strictly for the experienced crew.
The catch is that Thursday the 3rd brings the wind onshore and rain. The swell is huge, hitting 13ft in the morning, but with that cross-onshore wind, it's going to be a complete washing machine. It's messy and lumpy. For an exposed beach break, this is looking less like a surf day and more like a kite-surfing day. The conditions will be too blown out for a paddle.
After that, it's a slow fade back to smaller, poorer surf, with onshore winds and short-period slop for the rest of the week. So, mark your calendar for next Friday afternoon the 28th for a clean, fun wave, and keep an eye on Wednesday the 2nd of September for a big, powerful swell that will only suit the experts.
Keep it salty.
Rusty.
