Table - best surf conditions forecast for Muizenberg over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for us at Muizenberg.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a write-off. We’ve got onshore winds and messy conditions from Friday the 10th through to about Sunday the 12th. Don’t even bother paddling out – it’s grim. The swell is there, but it’s blown out, poor quality junk with onshore winds from the SE at 19 mph pushing things around. The combined energy is high at 1036 (moderate to strong), but it’s going to waste.
By Monday the 13th, things start to settle. We get a small, glassy morning with swell from the S around 3 ft, period 10 seconds. Combined energy is weak at 122. It’s ordinary, but at least it’s clean. Still, nothing to get excited about.
Tuesday the 14th stays small with offshore winds from the NNW, but the swell drops right off – only 2 ft in the morning and 1 ft in the afternoon. Combined energy is just 67 and then 49. That’s barely anything.
Now, the first real standout comes on Wednesday the 15th. The morning session has clean conditions with a light offshore from the NNW, swell from the SW at 3 ft and an 11-second period. Combined energy is 383 (moderate). That’s a nice little combo – clean, fun waves. Don’t be late though, because the afternoon gets a bit cross-onshore with a bigger 7 ft SW swell (period 15 seconds, combined energy 1917 – very strong). That’s expert-only territory, big and powerful, and the wind is messy, so it’s not clean.
But the absolute best on offer is Thursday the 16th. This is the pick of the window. Morning and afternoon, we’ve got offshore winds from the NW at just 6 mph, clean conditions, and a solid SW swell. The morning sees 7 ft at 13 seconds (combined energy 1482 – very strong), and the afternoon drops slightly to 6 ft at 13 seconds (combined energy 1120 – still very strong). This is proper groundswell, long period, and with offshore wind, Muizenberg will have some serious, powerful lines. It’s for experienced surfers though – this is not a beginner day.
After that, Friday the 17th is a total washout again – strong onshore SE winds at 22 mph wrecking the 5-5 ft SW swell. Don’t even look at the ocean.
Saturday the 18th sees conditions improve through the day. The morning is cross-onshore and marginal, but the afternoon turns glassy with light ESE winds, a 3 ft S swell at 12 seconds, and combined energy of 600 (moderate). That’s a really fun, clean afternoon session.
Sunday the 19th is also worth a paddle. The afternoon has a gentle offshore from the NW at 9 mph, clean conditions, 3 ft SSE swell, 12-second period, combined energy of 557 (moderate). Good, clean, user-friendly waves.
After that, from Monday the 20th through to the end of the forecast, it’s mostly onshore junk again. There’s a glimmer on Wednesday the 22nd morning with a 4 ft SSW swell at 13 seconds, but it’s onshore from the SE, so it’s unsurfable. Thursday the 23rd morning has a 6 ft SW swell (combined energy 1162 – very strong) but again, onshore winds from the SE kill it. The second week looks pretty dead for quality surf, with only marginal windows that are likely to be too wind-affected.
So to sum it up: the big standout is Thursday the 16th – big, clean, powerful SW groundswell with offshore wind. Pure class for experienced surfers. Saturday the 18th afternoon and Sunday the 19th afternoon are your smaller, cleaner options for the average surfer. The rest is either too small, too windy, or both.
Water temp is around 60°F, which is pretty normal for this time of year – you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Rusty.
