The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, the first few days are a bit of a write-off. Tuesday the 14th has tiny, weak, 2ft waves from the south with only 9 seconds between them. The energy is pathetic at (66), so it’s barely worth a paddle. The water is sitting at 59°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The real action kicks off early Wednesday morning, the 15th. It’s still a small swell, coming up to 3ft from the southwest, but the period jumps to 17 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy hits (672), and with glassy, offshore wind from the NW, Muizenberg is going to be clean and tempting. This is a solid pick for a longboard or a fun mid-length. The long period means the waves will be well-shaped, but expect longer lulls between sets.
Thursday the 16th morning is a standout for the confident surfer. Swell jumps to 6ft from the southwest, with a 13-second period and a solid energy reading of (1069). The wind is dead calm – glassy as it gets. This is excellent, clean surf, but at 6ft, it’s pushing into intermediate territory. For the experienced crew, this is the best session of the first week.
We hit a rough patch from Friday the 17th through Monday the 20th. Onshore winds and lumpy conditions kill the vibe. The swell is there, but it’s messy. Skip it.
Look ahead to Tuesday the 21st. Another glassy morning, with a 6ft SSW swell at 14 seconds and energy rocketing up to (1259). This is a fantastic window for the early bird. The conditions are pristine. Wednesday the 22nd gets even bigger, with 8ft swell from the southwest and a strong offshore wind from the NNW. The energy is massive at (2610). This is big, powerful surf – only for experts. The wind is cleaning it up perfectly, making for some serious, grinding walls.
The big one to circle on your calendar is Friday the 24th. The morning brings a solid 10ft southwest swell, with a 13-second period and a staggering combined energy of (3027). The wind is glassy from the ENE. This is a true heavy-water day. Big, powerful, and clean. If you’ve got the skill and the nerve, this is the best of the whole outlook. It’s too big for anyone but the experts.
The following week stays active. Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th hold 8ft+ surf, but the wind clocks onshore from the SSE and ESE, making it a bit bumpy. Still rideable for the keen, but not the clean perfection of Friday.
Monday the 27th afternoon sees a nice pulse: 6ft from the southwest with a 13-second period and a clean offshore NW wind. Energy sits at (1298). That’s a quality session. Tuesday the 28th morning is another glassy one with 7ft from the southwest – very good for the experienced.
The absolute final highlight is Wednesday the 29th. The swell holds at 10ft from the SSW, with a 14-second period and massive energy of (4082). The wind is offshore, light from the NNW. This is a huge, clean, powerful day. If you’re an expert, this is the one to wait for. For the rest of us, it’s a spectator sport.
Keep in mind, Muizenberg is an exposed beach break, and with the long-period groundswells, the waves will be heaving. The crowds can be a factor here, especially on the better days, so get out early.
Stay stoked.
