The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s look at what Muizenberg has on the table for the next couple of weeks. It’s a mixed bag, and we’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there are a couple of proper windows to get excited about.
The first week is pretty grim. We’ve got some background swell, but poor winds are messing it up. From Tuesday the 18th of August right through to Friday the 21st, it’s all cross-onshore chop – mostly in the 5ft to 7ft range from the SW, with the odd high period, but the wind just ruins it. Combined energy on Tuesday morning is heavy at 1525, but it’s messy and the water is a bit colder than normal at 57°. Nothing worth paddling out for.
The run of poor conditions finally breaks on Saturday morning the 22nd. We get a small, clean pulse with a gentle offshore wind and a glassy surface. The swell drops to 3ft from the SW, but the energy is low at 237. It’s a good beginner moment if you just need some water time.
The real standout of the first week hits on Saturday afternoon the 22nd. Swell jumps to a solid 8ft from the SW, period around 11 seconds, and the wind swings light cross-offshore. The energy cranks up to 1401. This is excellent for experienced surfers. It’s clean, pushing good power, and that’s the best you’ll see until late in the period. Crowds can be a problem here often, so be ready to share.
Sunday the 23rd slips back into gentler cross-onshore winds and smaller, choppier surf. The next few days dip again. Monday the 24th is flatlined, and Tuesday the 25th has size but the wind is howling onshore, just junk. Wednesday morning the 26th is interesting – a surprise glassy morning with a light 4ft SW swell and 521 energy. It won’t be big but it will be clean for a quick session.
Now, looking long range, there’s a true bombshell on Sunday morning the 30th of August. This is the best on offer for the whole outlook. We’ve got a clean, glassy 6ft swell from the SW, but the period is a massive 19 seconds – that’s very long period groundswell and combined energy is 3525. This is powerful stuff. At a beach break like Muizenberg, that long period might make waves break a bit straight, but the lack of wind will make it clean and the lines will be long. This is an absolute standout for experienced surfers. Not a beginner wave.
The run continues into September. Monday the 31st has clean 6ft SW swell with cross-offshore breeze and 1006 energy. Tuesday the 1st of September looks pumping: 8ft to 8ft SW swell, moderate offshore wind from the NNW, and energy over 2000. Again, this is big, powerful surf for confident surfers only. Too big for learners. For clean conditions for a less experienced crew, Wednesday the 2nd of September offers a more manageable 6ft to 6ft swell from the WSW, with a proper gentle offshore wind and energy around 1000.
So, keep your eyes on Saturday afternoon the 22nd for the first real clean, solid session, and then circle Sunday the 30th of August as the big one – just know it’s a beast. The first several days are a write-off, but it comes good in the end.
Rusty.
