The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here, your local surf reporter for The Point in Elands Bay. This is a reef, point and rivermouth set-up that loves a proper SW swell, and we've got a solid run of surf on the way for the next couple of weeks, but it takes a little while to get going.
The water's sitting around 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year—so you'll want the thick rubber.
Let's start with the action. The first real window opens up on Monday morning, 20 July. We've got a clean, glassy 4 ft SW swell rolling in with a period of 10 seconds. That's a good, punchy combo for The Point. The wind is dead calm, so expect pure, smooth faces. It's an ideal session for intermediates and up. The swell energy is moderate at 381 (units).
Tuesday brings cleaner conditions. On Tuesday morning, 21 July, there's a small 2 ft SW groundswell, but the period is a very long 14 seconds. That's a proper deep-ocean groundswell. On a point like this, that long interval will wrap in beautifully, giving you long, drawn-out lines. Winds are light cross-off from the SSE at 6 mph—clean and lined up. Expect some lulls between sets, but the quality will be worth the wait. Energy is moderate (284).
The standout window kicks off on Wednesday morning, 22 July. We've got a clean 5 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and it's glassy with barely a breath of wind. This is the pick of the first week for anyone who wants clean, user-friendly waves at a solid size. The combined energy climbs into the moderate-to-strong range at 642 (units), so there's plenty of push.
Then Thursday, 23 July, is a two-session gem. Morning is glassy again with a 4 ft WSW swell, and the afternoon stays clean with cross-off winds. Lovely stuff.
Now for the real highlight. Friday morning, 24 July, is where it gets serious. We've got a 7 ft WSW swell with a 14-second period—that's a strong, powerful groundswell. The combined energy is a beast at 1835 (units), putting it in the strong category. Winds are light and cross-off. This is excellent for experienced surfers only—too big and too powerful for beginners. The Point will handle this size well, with long, heavy waves that'll demand your respect.
Saturday, 25 July, backs off a touch to a 5 ft WSW swell, glassy morning, still very good. The weekend after that holds clean but slightly smaller conditions, with a 5 ft SW swell on Sunday, 26 July, though the wind turns onshore and cross-shore in the afternoon, so get in early.
Into the second week, the consistency holds. Tuesday morning, 28 July, brings a clean 4 ft SW swell with offshore winds, and the period is 13 seconds—another quality groundswell wave. Energy is moderate (589). The following days stay clean and in the 3 ft to 5 ft range with good offshore or light winds. Friday morning, 31 July, is a bit smaller at 4 ft, but with a 14-second period and offshore breeze—still worth a paddle.
The final standouts of the outlook come on Sunday, 2 August. The morning is clean with a 4 ft WSW swell and a 14-second period, combined energy of 656 (moderate-to-strong). The afternoon is a touch bigger at 5 ft, but the wind picks up, making the morning the clear pick. After that, Monday, 3 August, has poor conditions with strong cross-winds in the morning, so not worth it.
Crowds can be an issue here sometimes, but with the consistency on offer, you'll find a peak to yourself if you're early.
No kiteboarding calls here—this is a proper point break with plenty of paddling potential.
All in all, the best on offer is Friday, 24 July, for the big, powerful groundswell for the experienced crew, and Wednesday, 22 July, for the perfect, clean 5 ft waves for everyone else.
Rusty.
