Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, Rusty here. Let's see what we’ve got on the cards for The Point (Elands Bay).
The next couple of days are a bit of a write-off for a proper session, to be honest. Friday and Saturday are looking pretty marginal with small, weak swell around 3ft to 4ft coming from the WSW, and the wind isn't doing us any favours. There’s a brief window Saturday afternoon with a tiny 1ft long-period groundswell (16 seconds) and glassy conditions, but that's really just a flat spell with a bit of a pulse for a longboard or a swim.
The real action kicks off from Sunday, 5th July. The morning looks good – clean and glassy with a 3ft WSW swell, combined energy at a moderate 304. It’s small but clean, and with a light NNE breeze, you’ll have it to yourself if you’re lucky, though crowds are sometimes around. Sunday afternoon turns cross-off with the Southerly, cleaning the 3ft swell up nicely.
Now, Monday the 6th is where I’d be looking. We get a jump in size to a solid 6ft from the WSW, with a moderate period of 11 seconds. The wind is offshore from the SSE in the morning, and cross-off in the afternoon. This combined energy is strong, hitting 861, so there’s plenty of push. This is standout quality for intermediate surfers.
Tuesday the 7th keeps the quality going with clean conditions. Morning sees a 4ft swell, SSW cross-off wind, and a good 12-second period. The afternoon bumps up to 5ft with light Southerly winds. This is consistent and clean into the middle of the week.
We get another spike of size and energy on Wednesday the 8th – a 6ft WSW swell with a long 13-second period, and the combined energy is very strong at 1209. The wind stays cross-off from the SSE. This is powerful, grunty surf for The Point. It’s pushing 5ft in the afternoon with a similar energy reading, but the wind picks up a bit.
Thursday the 9th is absolute gold. The morning is glassy, with a 5ft SW groundswell (14-second period) and combined energy of 822. The wind is a light offshore from the ESE. The afternoon stays clean with cross-off winds. This is top-tier.
After that, the forecast gets a bit more sketchy. Friday the 10th is average, but Saturday the 11th through Tuesday the 14th looks pretty grim with building onshore winds from the North and dropping swell. A few days there with no decent recommendations.
Then, Wednesday the 15th brings a return of clean conditions with an offshore ESE breeze in the morning and a 4ft swell. The afternoon sees it build to 4ft with a very strong energy of 546.
But the big one to circle is Thursday, 16th July. The morning is glassy, with a 5ft WSW groundswell and a very long 15-second period. The combined energy is through the roof at 1318. This is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon holds 6ft from the same direction with a 14-second period and clean cross-off winds. This is the best-looking session on the whole board. It’s a standout.
Friday the 17th stays good with glassy conditions in the morning and a 6ft swell. The weekend of the 18th and 19th sees a change, with a shift to a short-period NW windswell (7 seconds) and a lot of size (7ft to 8ft). The cross-shore wind makes it messy, and that short period will be a bumpy, messy ride. That’s more of a kitesurfing setup than a paddle session.
Water temp is sitting at 57°, which is 3° colder than normal for this time of year. A bit nippy, so a good wetsuit is the call.
All in all, the pick of the period is Thursday morning, 16th July, with Monday the 6th and Thursday the 9th being solid runners-up. Keep an eye on the 16th.
