The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s cooking at The Point in Elands Bay. This is a reef, point, and rivermouth setup that loves a good SW groundswell, and we’ve got a run of days ahead that’ll keep your hopes up.
The overall picture shows a solid run of surf kicking off this Wednesday, 19 August, and stretching through the first week of September. There’s a real mix of conditions, but the standout windows are clear. The water is sitting at 54°, which is a massive 5° colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be wanting a thick wetsuit and booties. The swell energy is moderate to strong throughout, with the combined energy values ranging from 258 to 2046, telling you there’s plenty of power in the water.
The first real highlight hits on Thursday morning, 20 August. The Point will see clean 6 ft swell from the SW, with a 12-second period, and a light SSE cross-offshore breeze at 9 mph. The combined energy is a solid 978, meaning proper waves. This is a top call for an intermediate surfer.
Friday morning, 21 August, is another beauty. Clean 5 ft SW swell at 12 seconds, with a light SSW breeze at just 6 mph. It’s a cross-off, keeping the faces tidy. The energy is moderate at 549, but the quality is there.
Now, the big one. Saturday morning, 29 August, is looking like the pick of the entire run. The swell bumps up to 7 ft from the SW, 12-second period, and the wind is a glassy light S at 3 mph. The combined energy climbs to 1169. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The Point will be working nicely, but at this size, it’s not for beginners. Keep in mind this spot is fairly consistent, and crowds are possible, so get in early.
The following Tuesday morning, 1 September, also deserves a mention. Clean 6 ft SW groundswell with a very long 15-second period, glassy conditions with a light SE breeze at 3 mph. The energy is a strong 1271. The long period will make the waves at this point break with real shape and power. It’s another excellent session for experienced surfers.
There’s a smaller window on Thursday morning, 3 September, with a bigger 8 ft W swell pushing through, but the period is 14 seconds and the wind is a cross-shore at 9 mph. The energy jumps to 2046, which is very strong. This is big, raw power, and with the wind not ideal, it’s a marginal call. This one is for experts only, and the conditions might be a bit messy.
A couple of days in the middle, like the 26th and 27th of August, have glassy periods with smaller surf, offering a chance for a more relaxed session. The 26th Wednesday afternoon is glassy with a 5 ft WSW swell and 13-second period. Worth a paddle if you’re keen.
From the 30th of August onwards, the wind turns onshore and lumpy, so the surf quality drops off. The 31st sees rain and onshore wind, with a 6 ft WSW swell at 14 seconds, but it’s messy. The real standout remains the 29th of August morning and the 1st of September morning.
So, overall, the first week is a slow burn into a solid weekend, with a couple of true glassy gems to aim for. Don’t sleep on the morning of the 29th.
