The Lowdown
Hey, it’s Rusty. Let’s talk about The Point (Elands Bay) – a reef, point and rivermouth that really likes a good SW groundswell. We’ve got waves on the menu for the next couple of weeks, but not all of them are clean. Water temp is about 57°F – a bit cooler than average, so bring a spring suit at least. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, but you’ll find your own space if you time it right.
We start this Wednesday afternoon (15 July) with a long-period 1.3m (about 4.3ft) WSW swell at 16 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell pushing in. Combined wave energy is moderate at 927. Light cross-off wind keeps it clean. Not huge, but lined up nicely.
Thursday morning (16 July) is the first real standout. Swell bumps to 1.9m (6.2ft) from the WSW, period 13 seconds, and the wind is a light cross-off from the SSE at 6 mph. Energy climbs to 1264 – moderate but punchy. Clean, powerful waves for intermediates and up. Definitely worth a paddle.
Friday (17 July) drops back: 1.2m (3.9ft) in the morning with a light offshore SE breeze, then 1.1m (3.6ft) in the afternoon. Both clean, but unremarkable. Saturday (18 July) is small – 0.9m (3ft) at 10 seconds, glassy in the morning thanks to a light NNW breeze – ordinary but surfable on a longboard. Sunday (19 July) has a 1.0m (3.3ft) W swell, 11 seconds, and a SSE offshore in the morning – clean and decent. Afternoon gets a cross-shore.
Monday (20 July) is glassy again with 0.7m (2.3ft) SW at 11 seconds – small but clean for smaller craft. Afternoon fades.
Then things get messy. Tuesday (21 July) – 1.6m (5.2ft) SW groundswell at 14 seconds but the wind turns N at 12 mph, cross-onshore and choppy. Not worth it. Wednesday (22 July) and Thursday (23 July) keep building to 3
