Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a slow burner, but once it gets going, we’ve got some proper gems lined up.
Alright, first up, we’re looking at The Point (Elands Bay). This is a reef, point, and rivermouth setup, and for the time of year, the water is sitting at 56°, which is a bit colder than normal – you’ll want a decent steamer. The wait is on because there’s nothing doing right now, but we get into it proper on Tuesday the 7th.
Tuesday the 7th kicks things off with clean waves of 4 ft to 5 ft from the WSW (period 12 seconds) and a cross-off wind (SSE 3 mph in the morning, bumping to SSW 9 mph in the arvo). The energy is moderate, sitting at 750-769 (kilojoules). It’s clean and very good, but it’s just the warm-up.
The swell builds nicely on Wednesday the 8th. Morning sees clean 5 ft faces from the WSW (13 seconds) with a cross-off breeze, and the energy jumps notably (1178). The afternoon holds size at 5 ft, but a stronger SSW wind (12 mph) makes it a bit questionable. Stick to the morning.
Now, Thursday the 9th is a standout, especially for the experienced crew. That SW groundswell punches up to 5 ft with a long 14-second period, the wind is a light S at 6 mph (cross-off), and the wave energy is strong (1079). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The morning is the pick; the afternoon picks up a fresh SSW breeze (12 mph) that starts to mess with it.
Friday the 10th is glassy magic, especially early. Clean 5 ft SW swell (13 seconds) with a glassy WSW wind at 3 mph. The energy is moderate (696). The afternoon stays glassy with W 3 mph. This is a very good call for a relaxed, clean session.
Saturday the 11th stays glassy in the morning with a NW 3 mph wind, but the swell drops to 3 ft (SW, 13 seconds, 426 energy). Good for a log or a small-wave board, but it’s fading.
Sunday the 12th sees tiny conditions. 3 ft in the morning with glassy conditions (SE 0 mph), dropping to 2 ft by the arvo. It’s surfable but ordinary.
We then hit a flat spell. From Monday the 13th through to Wednesday the 15th, the swell is weak (1 ft to 2 ft) and winds are messy and onshore. There’s really nothing worth paddling for.
The magic returns on Thursday the 16th. Clean 4 ft to 5 ft WSW swell (12-13 seconds) with an offshore SSE wind (6-9 mph). The energy spikes (680) and it’s clean. Very good condition.
Then, Friday the 17th is the absolute standout of the whole forecast. We’re looking at a solid 8 ft SW groundswell (13 seconds) in the morning, dropping to a still-sizeable 7 ft in the afternoon. The wind is a light offshore SE at 3 mph in the morning (clean), and a cross-off S 9 mph in the arvo (still clean). The energy is very strong (1876 in the morning, 1245 in the arvo). This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is the day to block out for the bigger boards. At over 7 ft, it’s not for beginners. That long period (13 seconds) will be lining up nicely on the point.
After that, it fades again. Saturday the 18th sees a dropping 5 ft SW swell but with a cross wind from the SW that introduces some ripples. Sunday the 19th through Wednesday the 22nd is a write-off: small, weak, and with onshore or cross-onshore winds. Not worth the effort.
Best on offer: Thursday the 9th (morning) for the excellent, long-period groundswell with light winds, and Friday the 17th (morning) for the big, powerful, clean bomb set.
Signing off,
Rusty.
