Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Point (Elands Bay) over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming our way for the Elands Bay region over the next couple of weeks.
The main event is all about The Point (Elands Bay), a classic reef, point, and rivermouth set-up. The water's running a bit cooler than usual for the time of year, about 57°, which is a degree or so below normal, so you'll want a good wetsuit. We're definitely going to see some build-up towards a proper session, but there's a bit of a slow start.
Wednesday the 8th is a write-off, to be honest. The swell is there at 5ft from the WSW, with a moderate combined wave energy (1178), but the wind is a messy cross-off, and it's flagged as marginal. Not worth the paddle.
Thursday the 9th morning is where it starts to get interesting. We've got a clean 5ft swell from the SW, with a solid 14-second period between sets. The wind is just a light breeze, cross-off, making for clean conditions. Energy's strong at 1002. This is a good window for the experienced crew. The afternoon gets a bit gusty though.
Friday the 10th morning is a real treat. Glassy conditions, a light NW air, and a clean 5ft SW swell. It's a proper glass-off, so you'll be surfing silky lines. The energy is moderate at 701 but the quality is there for the taking.
Saturday the 11th is a drop-off in size, down to 3ft, but with glassy conditions again in the morning, it'll be fun small-wave boards. By Sunday the 12th, it's pretty limp, with onshore winds and a weak 3ft swell.
We then hit a long flat spell from Monday the 13th through to Wednesday the 15th, with tiny, messy waves and onshore winds. The best you'll get is a few glassy, knee-high dribblers on Tuesday morning the 14th, but it's barely surfable.
Now, hold onto your board. The real standout is locked in for Friday the 17th. Thursday the 16th afternoon sees a pulse of new 6ft WSW swell building in, and by Friday morning the 17th, it’s on. A solid 7ft groundswell from the WSW, with a period of 13 seconds, pumping in. The wind turns offshore from the SE, a light breeze, making for some absolutely clean, powerful waves. The combined energy is a strong 1281. This is the one for experienced surfers only – it’s going to be a proper, heavy session. The Point handles a long-period SW groundswell like this beautifully.
After that, the swell fades down through a fun Saturday the 18th, and then we get another smaller pulse for the 22nd and 23rd, but nothing to rival that Friday stand-out.
So to sum it up: grin through the early mornings this week, wait out the doldrums, and point your car at Elands Bay for the morning of Friday the 17th. That's the one.
Rusty.
