The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. Let's take a look at what's cooking for the next couple of weeks at The Point.
We're starting off slow and steady, not a classic firing start, but there's some real promise in the guts of the forecast. The water is a bloody chilly 55°F and that's a wild 5°F colder than normal for this time of year, so you'll be wanting a thick wetsuit and maybe some booties down at The Point (Elands Bay). The combined swell energy is a solid 1072 (moderate) on Sunday the 23rd afternoon, with a 6ft WSW swell, but that 20 km/h cross-off wind from the SSW is keeping it clean enough for a seasoned crew.
Monday the 24th morning is a proper little window. The swell drops to 5ft from the WSW, period a nice 12 seconds, and with a light 10 km/h breeze from the S, it's cross-off and clean. The energy is still there at 550 (moderate). It's a session for the intermediate crew, with the swell direction lining up nicely with the spot's favourite SW angle. Monday arvo gets a bit windier and messier, so don't sleep in.
Tuesday the 25th morning is another standout for the early birds. Swell bumps back to 5ft from the SW, a proper 14-second period groundswell, and the energy jumps to 929 (moderate). With a light cross-off, it's clean and lined up. The afternoon sees a bigger 6ft swell but the 20 km/h wind starts to mess with the surface.
Now, Wednesday the 26th morning is the absolute gem of the first week. The wind goes glassy, a total dead calm from the ENE at just 5 km/h. The swell is a clean 4ft from the WSW, 13-second period, and the energy sits at 587 (moderate). This is the kind of morning you set the alarm for—clean, long lines, and the Point should be working beautifully. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
The rest of the week fades. Thursday the 27th sees the swell drop to 3ft, wind goes onshore from the NW, and it's a write-off. Friday the 28th is small and weak, barely 2ft. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are a write-off with strong onshore winds and messy conditions.
Hold on, because Sunday the 30th afternoon gets big. A 10ft W swell with a 13-second period and a massive 2904 (strong) energy is forecast, but the wind is cross-on from the W at 15 km/h. It's going to be a wild, lumpy mess and likely too big for this break. Monday the 31st morning is still big at 8ft, but the afternoon looks much better. A 8ft WSW swell, cross-off wind from the SSW at 15 km/h, and clean conditions. The energy is 1343 (strong) and it's calling for experienced surfers only. That's a solid session for the crew who know what they're doing.
The first week of September is a mixed bag. Tuesday the 1st is poor with onshore winds. Wednesday the 2nd is a total mess with a 13ft swell and 35 km/h winds—kite surfing territory, not paddle. Thursday the 3rd has a massive 13ft swell (energy hits 6049, very strong) but it's cross-shore and lumpy, only for the absolute experts. Friday the 4th is a drop back to 6ft but the wind is messy.
Now, for the second week, keep an eye on Saturday the 5th of September. An 8ft WSW swell with a 15-second period and a huge 3284 (strong) energy, but the wind is light cross-shore. It's a promising but less certain long-range option.
Sunday the 6th and Monday the 7th are smaller, with around 5ft to 8ft swells, clean cross-off winds, but the energy is moderate. Worth a look if you're keen for a mid-week paddle.
Best on offer: Wednesday the 26th morning for the glassy, clean conditions and solid 4ft groundswell. And for the bigger crew, Monday the 31st afternoon is a ripper for experienced surfers.
Stay wet, stay warm.
