The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve been staring at the charts for Elands Bay. We’ve got a slow start, but this one’s gonna build into something special. The first few days are small and clean, but the real payoff is a solid week away, so keep your wetsuit handy.
Alright, let’s kick it off. Saturday the 18th, The Point (Elands Bay) is glassy. The swell is a tiny 3 feet from the WSW with a period of 10 seconds, but the combined energy is moderate at 256. The water is sitting at 57.4°, which is about average for this time of year, no big surprises there. It’s a mellow intro, but don’t expect much push.
Sunday the 19th morning is similar, glassy again with a 2.6 feet SW swell and a longer period of 12 seconds. The energy is up a bit to 315, still moderate. That afternoon the wind swings cross-shore and it gets a bit average.
Monday the 20th morning looks better. The swell bumps to 3.6 feet from the SW, period 10 seconds, and we get clean conditions with a cross-offshore breeze. Energy is moderate at 324. It’s a solid little session. The afternoon goes cross and choppy though, so hit it early.
Tuesday the 21st morning is clean again with a tiny 2 feet, but the period stretches to 14 seconds – a proper groundswell feel. Energy is 254. That afternoon the swell jumps to 3.6 feet and the period holds at 14 seconds, but the energy spikes to 512 (moderate), and the cross-shore wind makes it a bit messy.
Wednesday the 22nd is a write-off. The swell is 4.6 feet, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. Energy is 591. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 23rd morning is still a bit messy, but the afternoon cleans right up. The swell is 4.9 feet from the WSW, period 12 seconds, and it’s a clean cross-offshore breeze. Energy is 641. That’s your first real standout window – the waves are solid, clean, and the Point will be handling that SW swell nicely.
Now, here’s the big one. Friday the 24th morning is the best on offer. The swell hits 6.6 feet from the WSW, period 14 seconds, and the energy is strong at 1560. The wind is a clean cross-offshore breeze. This is a proper groundswell, and with that long period, The Point (reef, point, and rivermouth) is going to be absolutely piping. The wave height is over 5 feet so it’s a step up for beginners, but for intermediates and above, this is a cracker. Crowds are possible here, so get there early. The afternoon drops to 5.9 feet but stays clean.
Saturday the 25th morning is still very good. 4.9 feet from the WSW, period 13 seconds, with a clean offshore wind. Energy is 760. The afternoon holds at 4.6 feet with clean conditions.
Sunday the 26th is a mess. Strong wind from the NE at 30 km/h makes it lumpy and poor. Not worth it.
Monday the 27th morning bounces back. 4.3 feet from the WSW, period 14 seconds, clean cross-offshore wind. Energy is 612. Good session.
Tuesday the 28th starts to get a bit bigger and messy. The morning has 5.9 feet from the SW, but the wind is cross-onshore and choppy. Energy is 1454. The afternoon has 4.6 feet but onshore wind. Not great.
Wednesday the 29th is marginal with fresh winds, but the afternoon has a fresh offshore breeze from the SSE, 4.6 feet SW swell, period 12 seconds. Clean but a bit windy.
Thursday the 30th looks sweet. Morning is clean with a light offshore wind, 3.9 feet SW swell, period 12 seconds. Energy is 403. The afternoon is even better – 4.3 feet, same direction, clean with a gentle offshore breeze, energy 550. A solid day.
Friday the 31st is clean and consistent. 3.9 feet SW swell, period 13 seconds, clean cross-offshore wind. Energy around 495. A good end to the month.
Saturday the 1st of August is clean in the morning with an offshore breeze, 3.6 feet SW swell, period 13 seconds. The afternoon gets a cross-shore wind, so go early.
Now, the absolute standout of the entire forecast is Sunday the 2nd of August. The morning is glassy, and the swell is 5.2 feet from the WSW, but with a ridiculously long period of 18 seconds. The combined energy is very strong at 1579. That’s a proper groundswell, and with that period, the Point will be handling it beautifully – think long, clean lines. The afternoon holds with 5.6 feet from the WSW, period 17 seconds, energy 1638, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. This is a serious session, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on it. The wave height is over 5 feet, so it’s a step up for beginners, but for
