The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for The Point at Elands Bay over the next couple of weeks.
The first surf worth paddling out for isn’t until Friday afternoon, the 17th of July. It’s been a bit quiet before that. We start with a solid run of clean, modest waves that builds into a very good window, then things get messy before a promising last hurrah. The water temperature is sitting at 56.7°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so don’t forget the hood.
Friday 17th July afternoon – It’s on. The Point (Elands Bay) is showing a 3.6ft SW swell, period at 11 seconds, with a moderate cross-off wind from the S at 9 mph. The combined energy is moderate (268). It’s clean, it’s a reef and point setup, and the swell is hitting from the optimum direction. This is a solid, honest start to the run.
Saturday 18th July – The morning is a real treat. The swell drops to 3.0ft from the WSW, but with glassy conditions and zero wind, it’s going to be smooth as silk. Combined energy is moderate (197). The afternoon holds similar size, still 3.0ft WSW, with a glassy 3 mph SW breeze. Another clean one.
Sunday 19th July – Morning keeps it clean with a 2.6ft SW swell, 12-second period, cross-off wind. Energy is moderate (315). The afternoon turns cross-shore and a bit windier at 9 mph, so the quality dips.
Monday 20th July – A clean morning with 2.6ft SW swell, 11-second period, and a light offshore from the SSE at 6 mph. Energy is moderate (261). Afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze. Still a fun, small day.
Tuesday 21st July – The morning sees the swell bottom out at 1.6ft SW, but the period is a long 14 seconds and the wind is glassy. Combined energy is moderate (201). It’s tiny but it’ll be a pretty, glassy little wave. The afternoon gets a bit messy with cross-shore wind.
Wednesday 22nd July – Forget it. Rain showers, howling cross-on and onshore winds up to 22 mph, and a jumpy 4.6ft to 4.9ft swell. The combined energy jumps to strong (727, 779). This is a write-off for paddle surfing. If you’ve got a kite, this is where it’s at.
Thursday 23rd July – Still messy but better. Morning is cross-on with 4.9ft WSW swell, period 12 seconds, energy strong (609). Afternoon cleans up a bit with a cross-off breeze from the SSW at 9 mph, 4.6ft swell. Marginal, but the afternoon is the better bet.
Friday 24th July – Now we’re talking. This is a standout. The morning brings a 6.2ft WSW swell, a very long 15-second period, and a clean offshore from the SE at 6 mph. The combined energy is very strong (1613). This is a big, clean groundswell hitting the point. The crowd factor is “sometimes” here, so don’t be surprised if there are a few of you out. This is a wave for experienced surfers only – 6.2ft with that period will have plenty of push. The afternoon stays big at 6.2ft, but the wind goes cross-off and the period drops to 14 seconds – still good, but the morning is the clear winner.
Saturday 25th July – Another standout. Morning is 6.6ft WSW swell, 14-second period, and a light offshore from the SE. Energy is very strong (1390). This is a solid, powerful wave for competent surfers. The afternoon has a stronger cross-off breeze at 16 mph, so the morning is the pick.
Sunday 26th July – The swell settles a bit, but the quality is still high. Morning brings 4.3ft WSW swell, 12-second period, and a clean offshore from the SSE at 9 mph. Energy is moderate to strong (785). The afternoon bumps up to a 3.9ft SW swell with a very long
