The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up for The Point (Elands Bay). This is a reef, point and rivermouth setup that handles a SW swell best. The water’s running at 55°, which is a solid 5° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a notable chill, so grab an extra mm of rubber.

First bit of action kicks off on Tuesday the 18th with some 6ft swell out of the WSW at a long 12 seconds. The combined energy is moderate (852). Wind is a cross-off at 16 mph, so it’ll be clean, but it’s a marginal call with the tide. It’s surfable but nothing to write home about.

Wednesday the 19th is similar – 6ft and 5ft pulses, but the wind gets a bit stiffer in the afternoon. Still cross-off, so clean faces, but the energy drops off (722). Keep expectations in check.

Thursday the 20th is holding steady with 6ft and a slightly longer period at 13 seconds. Wind is gentler in the morning, but the afternoon gets fresh again. Moderate energy (966). Still just okay.

Friday the 21st morning is where it starts to feel a little better. Swell drops to 5ft but the period stays at 12 seconds, and with a light breeze straight offshore it’s looking pretty clean. Energy is moderate (558). This is the first real window for a decent session. The afternoon goes onshore though and turns to junk.

Saturday the 22nd is a write-off – small surf with onshore and cross-shore winds.

Sunday the 23rd is the standout of this stretch. Morning brings 6ft swell out of the WSW at a solid 13 seconds. That’s strong, moderate-to-strong energy (1152), and with a light cross-off breeze, it’ll be clean and powerful. This is for experienced surfers – it’s a good step up in size, and the point will be lining up nicely. The afternoon gets a bit windier but still clean. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, so you might have company.

Monday the 24th is still decent in the morning – 5ft, clean with gentle cross-off wind (623 energy). Afternoon gets blown out by a fresh 19 mph breeze.

Then we hit a gem. Tuesday the 25th morning is glassy. Dead calm, 3ft of swell but with a very long 14-second period. That’s a groundswell. The energy is still moderate (629), but that period will put some real shape into the waves, especially at a point break like this. It’ll be small but beautifully clean. Afternoon picks up to 6ft with cross-off wind, still with that long period.

Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th fade into smaller, onshore or cross-onshore conditions. Not worth chasing.

Friday the 28th is back to clean but moderate-size waves with cross-off wind in the morning, but the wind cranks up in the afternoon. Not a standout.

Saturday the 29th morning brings another pulse: 6ft WSW, 12 seconds, light cross-off wind, and strong energy (923). That’s a solid session shaping up, clean and punchy.

The last few days into the start of September offer some bigger pulses (6ft to 6ft again) but with onshore or strong cross-off winds. The 31st morning has a 4ft swell at a very long 13 seconds with north winds making it choppy and messy. The first of September has similar issues. Not the best way to finish.

All up, your best bets are Sunday morning the 23rd for a proper, powerful point-break session, and Tuesday morning the 25th for a glassy, long-period treat. Don’t sleep on Saturday the 29th morning either – that’s a solid clean pulse.

Stay frosty, and check the tides.
