The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for The Point (Elands Bay).
The next 16 days are a bit of a mixed bag, but there are some real gems hiding in there if you can pick your windows. The water’s sitting a bit colder than usual for this time of year, about 57°, with a -2° anomaly, so that full wetsuit is definitely the call.
We’ve got a slow start. The first few days are pretty average. Tuesday the 14th is a write-off for us—cross-on wind and small, weak swell (213 energy units) making for a messy, marginal morning. The afternoon is no better. It’s worth waiting.
Things start to get interesting on Wednesday the 15th. That morning, the wind turns nice and clean as a cross-off, and we’ve got a long-period 16-second groundswell filling in from the WSW. That’s a reef/point setup swell, perfect for The Point. Combined energy jumps to 422 (moderate). The swell is small at 3 ft, but with that period and a light breeze, it’s going to be lined up and clean. The afternoon picks up to 4 ft with the same period, and the energy is up to 927. This is a solid wave for the intermediate crew.
Now, the standout for the first week. Thursday the 16th morning is the one to circle. We’re looking at 6 ft of clean WSW groundswell with a 13-second period, pushed by a light cross-off breeze. The energy is a strong 1264. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers. The Point will be working, and the conditions will be clean. Crowds can show up here sometimes, so get in early.
Friday the 17th holds onto clean conditions with a nice 4 ft SW swell and 11-second period, driven by a light offshore SSE wind. That’s going to be a super fun morning session. The afternoon is a touch smaller at 4 ft but still clean.
We hit a bit of a flat spot Saturday the 18th. The morning is small and cross-on, but the afternoon turns glassy—3 ft of clean, knee-high glass. It’s a board-changer, not a surfer’s session.
The next highlight comes Sunday the 19th morning. Another clean, cross-off morning with a 4 ft, 12-second SW groundswell. The energy is 551 (moderate), and it’s going to be a very good, clean surf. Monday the 20th is a similar story: small, clean, and fun.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Tuesday the 21st through to Wednesday the 22nd, the wind cranks up onshore. Tuesday has 22 mph cross-on winds with 5 ft swell—it’s a mess. Wednesday the 22nd is worse: 19 to 22 mph cross-on winds with an 8 ft WSW swell (2767 energy units) but blown out and lumpy. Thursday the 23rd cleans up a bit with a cross-off breeze, and we get 6 ft to 6 ft of clean, strong swell (1267 to 1695 energy). That’s a big, powerful wave for the Point, but it’s still clean.
The next absolute standout is Friday the 24th. Morning and afternoon both deliver excellent conditions for experienced surfers. The morning sees 7 ft of clean, cross-off swell from the WSW with a 14-second period (1715 energy). The afternoon is a solid 7 ft at 13 seconds (1336 energy). This is expert territory. The Point will be handling a lot of water, and it will be clean.
Saturday the 25th afternoon is another sneaky good one—4 ft of an 18-second groundswell (1190 energy) with a light cross-off breeze. That’s a very long period, so the Point will reel off some long, lined-up walls. Spot is clean, but that period is best for the point and reef.
Sunday the 26th morning is excellent again: 6 ft of clean, 15-second groundswell (1432 energy), with a moderate cross-off. That’s a strong, clean day for experienced surfers. The afternoon gets a bit breezy.
After that, the final week turns messy. Strong winds and onshore flow dominate from Monday the 27th through to the end of the forecast. Monday the 27th is a write-off. Tuesday the 28th is blown out. Wednesday the 29th has a big 7 ft to 8 ft W swell, but it’s cross-on and choppy. Could be a windsurf or kite day, but not paddle-friendly.
So, the best on offer? Thursday the 16th morning for the clean, strong groundswell, and Friday the 24th for the real power and excellent conditions. Get on it.
Rusty.
