The Lowdown

G’day, Rusty here, looking at what’s on the cards for The Point (Elands Bay). This is a reef, point and rivermouth setup that’s fairly consistent, with an optimum swell from the SW. The water’s sitting at 56.3°F and coming in a bit colder than normal for this time of year—about 2.7°F below average, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.

We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but the first real chance to get wet comes Thursday afternoon, July 16. It’s gonna be clean with a cross-off breeze from the SSW at 12 mph, and waves around 5.6 ft from the WSW with a 13-second period. The combined energy is moderate (943), but the write-up says it’s marginal surf due to questionable tide conditions, so don’t get your hopes too high.

Friday morning, July 17, looks solid though. The wind drops right out—glass, with a light SSE breeze at 3 mph, and the swell drops to 3.9 ft from the SW, 11-second period. It’s clean, glassy, and the energy is moderate (360). That’s a proper window for an intermediate session. The afternoon turns cross-off again, still surfable but the tide might mess with it.

Saturday morning, July 18, is dead flat calm—zero wind, glassy—with a 3.0 ft WSW swell, 10-second period. Energy is still moderate (197). The afternoon picks up a touch to 3.3 ft, also glassy, and the conditions are good. Sunday morning, July 19, keeps the glassy trend with a 2.6 ft SW swell, 12-second period, and energy at 318. It’s clean, but the swell is dropping.

Monday, July 20, morning is cross-off with a light breeze and 3.0 ft SW swell. The energy is moderate (293). Still okay, but nothing to write home about. Tuesday, July 21, the wind swings north-northwest, turning cross-on, and the swell drops to 2.0 ft in the morning, 14-second period. The energy is moderate (304), but the conditions are marginal. The afternoon gets a bit more size at 3.0 ft, but the cross-on wind at 9 mph makes it choppy.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. Wednesday, July 22, we’ve got a big pulse of swell—9.8 ft from the WSW, 13-second period—but the wind is onshore and strong at 19 mph. The combined energy is very strong (2741), but it’s lumpy and messy. This is big, powerful stuff, but it’s blown out. For paddle surfing, it’s a write-off. If you’re a kite surfer, this setup looks way more interesting.

Thursday morning, July 23, is the first standout. The wind goes glassy from the ENE at 3 mph, and the swell is 6.9 ft from the WSW, 12-second period. The energy is strong (1299), and the conditions are clean and glassy. This is a proper session for experienced surfers—it’s over 8.2 ft, so only for the experts. The afternoon is cross-off, still clean but a bit more wind.

Friday morning, July 24, is another standout. Offshore wind from the SSE at 9 mph, with a 7.5 ft WSW swell, 15-second period. The energy is very strong (2207), and it’s clean with gentle offshore conditions. This is a long-period groundswell, and at a point/reef setup like The Point, that’s where it really shines. The afternoon is cross-off, still good but a notch down.

Saturday morning, July 25, is the absolute best on offer. Glassy wind from the SE at 3 mph, with a 7.9 ft WSW swell and a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is massive (3048). This is a world-class groundswell—clean, offshore, and perfect for the point. It’s only for experts at this size, but if you’ve got the skills, this is the session to circle. The afternoon is cross-off but still excellent.

Sunday, July 26, the swell drops to 6.2 ft, still WSW, 14-second period, with light cross-off winds. It’s clean and strong energy (1422). Still very good for experienced surfers. Monday, July 27, the swell comes down to 4.9 ft, 14-second period, with cross-off winds and clean conditions. Energy is moderate (874). This is a solid intermediate session.

Tuesday morning, July 28, we get another glassy morning with a 5.9 ft WSW swell, 15-second period, and energy at 1743. The afternoon is also glassy, with 6.2 ft and very long period. This is a return to premium conditions—clean, glassy, and strong
