The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here. We've got a mixed bag of a forecast for The Point (Elands Bay) stretching out a solid 16 days. The good news is there's plenty of swell on the cards, but the devil's in the details with the wind and, for a few sessions, the size. We're looking at a classic reef, point, and rivermouth setup that needs a friendly SW swell to line up, and we've got that coming in pulses.
The first real chance to get wet is Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The Point wakes up with a clean 6 ft WSW swell, period sitting at a solid 13 seconds – that's proper groundswell, giving the waves some real push and shape. The wind is light and cross-offshore from the SSW, so it's going to be glassy. The combined energy is strong at 968, and it's gonna feel punchy. The afternoon stays clean but the breeze picks up a notch, still good though. This is a standout session.
Monday the 24th starts with more of the same goodness – 5 ft of WSW groundswell at 12 seconds, light cross-off wind, and clean conditions. That morning window is the pick. The arvo gets a bit of a hooning cross-off wind, but the swell drops a touch.
Tuesday the 25th is the absolute highlight of the first week. The morning is firing with 6 ft of WSW swell but the period bumps up to 14 seconds – that's a very long-period groundswell, packing a ton of energy (1148). Light S winds, cross-off, and clean as a whistle. This is one for the experienced crew, as the long-period swell will bend beautifully around the point and reef, offering plenty of drive. The afternoon session is still solid but the wind picks up.
A quick heads-up: the water temp is sitting at 55°F, which is a whopping 5°F colder than usual for this time of year. That's a serious chill, so don't skimp on the rubber.
Wednesday the 26th offers a nice, clean morning with 4 ft of WSW swell, light E wind and cross-off conditions. The afternoon is even better with a proper SE offshore wind and the same size swell – clean, lined-up waves for the later session.
We then hit a bit of a lull from Thursday the 27th through to Saturday the 29th. The swell drops right down to under 3 ft, with onshore or cross-shore winds making things messy. The point will be small and weak, not really worth the paddle.
The next big pulse arrives on Sunday, the 30th of August, but it's a problem. The swell jumps to a massive 10 ft from the WSW, with a 13-second period and combined energy over 3000. The wind is favorable, but this is simply too big for The Point. This is expert-only territory, and even then, it's going to be a washing machine. I'd call this one a kite-surfing day if the wind suits.
Monday the 31st is a step down but still a solid 7 ft of WSW groundswell, with light S cross-off winds. The size is right on the edge of being too much for intermediates, but it's clean and powerful. Tuesday the 1st of September sees it drop back to a more manageable 4 ft from the SW, with a super long 14-second period and light ENE cross-off wind. The energy is strong (852), and the waves will be clean and lined up – a very good morning session.
The second week gets a bit messy, with a few more windows. Wednesday the 2nd has onshore NNW wind, no good. Thursday the 3rd is a repeat of the 30th – a massive 10 ft+ swell, too big for the break. Friday the 4th and Saturday the 5th are marginal, with dropping swell but fresh winds. The one that catches my eye is Saturday the 5th afternoon: a 5 ft WSW swell with a staggering 22-second period! That's an incredibly long groundswell, with combined energy of 3645. The wind is cross-off from the SW, but it's fresh (19 mph). The period is so long that the sets will be very spaced out, but the waves that do come through will be clean, powerful, and well-shaped on the point. Definitely a promising but less certain long-range option.
Then Sunday the 6th of September is another massive swell event – 12 ft of WSW, again too big for the break. The pattern is clear: the first week has the best windows, with Tuesday the 25th being the absolute standout. After that, it's a mix of small bumps and big, out-of-control swells, so keep an eye on the charts.
Signing off, Rusty.
