The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here, let’s break down what’s on the table for Doring Bay over the next couple of weeks. This is a reef setup, fairly consistent, exposed to SW swell, and it likes swell from the SW. Water temp is around 57°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so bring a good wetsuit.
First few days are quiet. Saturday 18th July has a small 3ft SW swell, 14-second period, crosswind, moderate energy (447). Nothing to write home about. Sunday 19th July picks up to 4ft SW, 12-second period, still crosswind, moderate energy. Marginal.
Monday 20th July morning is the first real window: 5ft SW swell, cross-offshore breeze, clean conditions, moderate energy (657). That’s a solid session for Doring Bay. Monday afternoon goes downhill.
Tuesday 21st July morning is glassy, but the swell is only 3ft, though the period is 15 seconds—long lines, clean, moderate energy (473). Tiny but fun if you’re keen on a glassy paddle.
Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd see the swell climb to 7ft, with strong energy, but the wind is cross-on or cross-off, and conditions are only marginal. Thursday afternoon looks cleaner.
Friday 24th July morning—big one. Swell hits 10ft from the SW, 14-second period, very strong energy (3688). That’s a serious groundswell. Light cross-off wind, clean, but 10ft on a reef is for experts only. The forecast flags it as too big for the break. Afternoon drops to 8ft but with stronger crosswind.
Saturday 25th July morning is excellent for experienced surfers: 8ft SW swell, 13-second period, clean cross-off, strong energy (1876). Saturday afternoon turns offshore with 7ft, clean, moderate breeze. Good quality.
Sunday 26th July morning is blown out by 40 km/h NE wind, swell drops to 5ft. Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th are mostly marginal with onshore wind.
Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July clean up. Thursday 30th morning is a standout: 6ft SSW swell, 12-second period, offshore breeze, light air, clean, strong energy (1283). Excellent for experienced surfers.
Friday 31st July is clean but marginal, with 7ft SSW swell and fresh cross-off wind.
Now, the best of the bunch: Saturday 1st August morning. Offshore wind, 8ft SSW swell, 11-second period, very strong energy (2078)—excellent conditions for experienced surfers. And Sunday 2nd August is the absolute peak. Both morning and afternoon have excellent conditions: 8ft to 8ft SW swell, with period blowing up to 18 seconds in the morning and 17 seconds in the afternoon. That’s very long-period groundswell, very strong energy (3264 to 3348). For a reef like Doring Bay, that’s the kind of swell that can produce some real gems. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so expect some company. This is the standout of the entire 16 days for experienced surfers. It’s a long way out, so treat it as promising but not set in stone.
Overall, the first week is mostly small or marginal with a few clean moments. The second week has more size and quality, especially around the 1st and 2nd of August. If you’re experienced and patient, that’s your window.
Rusty.
