The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. We're looking at the next couple of weeks at Doring Bay, and it's a story of two halves. The first week has some real gems, but the second week is mostly for the hardcore, chargers only.
The water temp is sitting right about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The real standout window hits us on Tuesday, August 25th morning. That's the pick of the whole forecast. We're talking a solid 7ft swell rolling in from the SW, with a super long 14-second period. That's proper groundswell, packing a ton of energy (2286) and it's going to be ripping down the reef. The wind is a light S breeze, keeping it cross-off and clean. This is going to be perfect for experienced surfers, offering up some proper stand-up barrels. The crowds are a possibility here, but for waves like this, it's worth sharing a few.
Monday, August 24th morning is also a solid call. It's a touch smaller at 6ft from the SW, but still with great energy (1011) and clean, cross-off wind from the S. It's a great way to start the week.
The surf then drops off late in the first week. Friday, August 28th afternoon sees a small, clean 4ft SW groundswell roll in (14-second period, 651 energy), but it's a shadow of the Tuesday wave.
Now, heading into the second week, from Monday, September 1st onwards, the swell starts pumping hard, but it gets too big. On Tuesday, September 1st morning, we have a 8ft SW swell with a 14-second period and massive energy (2708). The wind is light cross, which is okay, but the size is getting into expert-only territory.
Then it really kicks off. Wednesday, September 2nd morning sees a 10ft SW swell, and it just gets bigger from there, with 12ft and 13ft days showing up. The wind is a mess, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the energy readings are through the roof (3656, 5891, 3809). This is not for the faint of heart or anyone without a serious big-wave gun. The size and wind combo make it look more like a kite-surfing show than a paddle session. There are a few mornings with favorable wind, but the swell is just too damn big for this break.
Bottom line: hit Tuesday, August 25th morning for the best waves of the whole run. After that, it's a waiting game for the ocean to chill out.
Rusty.
