The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s cooking at Doring Bay. This is a reef setup, fairly consistent, and it loves a good SW swell. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild to report there.
We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but hang tight. The first real session to look at is Wednesday morning, 15 July. The wind is glassy out of the ESE at 3 mph, and we’ve got a 4ft SW groundswell with a long 16-second period. The combined energy is moderate (739). This is a solid, clean wave for an intermediate surfer – not too big, not too small. It’s a nice little warm-up, but it’s not the standout.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Tuesday morning, 21 July. Get ready. The wind is dead calm, glassy as a mirror. We’re looking at an 8ft SW groundswell with a very long 16-second period. The combined energy is strong (2963). This is a big, powerful, clean reef wave for experienced surfers only. It’s going to be lined up, but remember, with that long period, it might be a bit too straight for the beach, but on a reef like this, it’ll be a thing of beauty. Expect some crowds, though.
Another one to watch, and this is a bit further out, is Tuesday morning, 28 July. The wind is a clean offshore from the ENE at 6 mph. You’ve got an 8ft SW groundswell with a 15-second period, and the combined energy is very strong (4181). This is another expert-level session, clean and powerful. It’s a long-range call, so less certain, but the potential is huge.
Now, for the rest of the run. Thursday morning, 16 July, has an 8ft SW swell but with a cross-offshore wind – it’s clean, but the swell is big enough that it’s only for the experienced crew. Friday morning, 17 July, drops to a more manageable 6ft with offshore wind, a good day for the intermediates. The weekend (18-19 July) gets smaller and the wind gets messy, so it’s a bit of a write-off. Monday morning, 20 July, is a small clean 4ft day, okay for a cruise.
The second week gets very serious. From 21 July onward, the swell is consistently over 8ft, often hitting 10ft to 12ft. The wind is mostly cross or cross-off. For most of these days, the swell is just too big for this break, especially for the average surfer. The best bet for the brave is the 28 July morning session I mentioned, and maybe the 26 July morning, which has a 8ft WSW swell with glassy conditions, though it’s still a big, powerful wave.
So, the pick of the bunch is Tuesday morning, 21 July. Get there early, know your limits, and it could be a magic session. The 28 July is a promising long-range backup.
Rusty, signing off.
