The Lowdown
Alright, grab your wettie. Here we go.
So, we’re looking at a pretty solid run of waves coming into Doring Bay over the next couple of weeks. The main event is a big SW groundswell, and while the quality is hit and miss, we have a few clear windows to get it absolutely perfect. The pulse hangs around a long time, but you’ll need to pick your moments to avoid the chop.
First up, Tuesday the 18th morning looks great. We’ve got a clean 7ft SW groundswell (13-second period, 1548 combined energy) and a light S wind making it cross-offshore. The energy is moderate but solid, and the direction is exactly what this reef needs. It’s a fairly consistent spot, but you might see a few others out there. That’s your first standout.
The real gem for the experienced crew is shaping up for Thursday the 20th morning. Another clean session with 8ft SW swell at 13 seconds (1853 energy) and light S winds. By the afternoon, it gets a bit too big at 10ft – that’s expert territory only, but that morning window is prime.
After a few choppy days, the wind looks to play nice again on Monday the 24th morning. Clean lines again with 6ft SSW swell (11-second period, 1192 energy) and a cross-off SSE breeze.
Onto the longer range, which is less certain but looks promising. Tuesday the 25th morning shows offshore ESE winds and 4ft SW swell (12-second period, 540 energy). The swell is smaller, but with glassy conditions, it’ll be super fun and clean. The water temp is about average for the time of year, feels normal for this spot.
The rest of the second week is a mixed bag of messy cross-shore winds. There’s a pulse of very long period swell (22 seconds!) on the 25th afternoon (2071 energy), but that’s blown out by onshore wind, making it a kiteboarder’s playground, not a paddler’s. The 29th of August morning has a massive 12ft SW swell (2895 energy), but with the wind hammering cross-shore, it’s going to be a lumpy, dangerous beast. Best left to the die-hards with big wave boards.
If you’re looking for a score, lock in Tuesday the 18th and Thursday the 20th mornings. The rest is a gamble.
