The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty comin' at ya from right here at Doring Bay. We've got a solid run of swell on the cards, but it's not gonna be one of those easy, all-levels kinda stretches. This is a reef break, intermediate territory at best, and it's exposed to the full force of the southwest. We're looking at a window of good, clean conditions, but you gotta pick your moments.
Right off the bat, Thursday morning the 16th is a serious standout. We've got a strong 8.2ft SW groundswell, with a long 13-second period, and it's pumping in with a massive 2275 units of combined energy. The wind is a light cross-offshore breeze at 6 mph, which is gonna keep the surface clean. Now, this swell size is too big for beginners, but for an experienced surfer, this is excellent. The long period means it's gonna pulse with some real power, and on a reef setup like Doring Bay, that translates to some proper, meaty walls.
Friday morning the 17th is also a beauty. The swell drops a bit to 5.9ft from the SW, but the period is still a strong 12 seconds, and the energy is solid at 826. The wind is a whisper-light cross-offshore at 3 mph. It's a little more manageable size-wise, but still very much an intermediate and above wave.
Saturday the 18th sees a drop in energy but the light N wind goes glassy in the morning at 3 mph. The swell is 3.6ft with a 10-second period, so it's smaller and a bit weaker, but it'll be clean.
Sunday the 19th morning is another gem to circle. A 5.2ft SW swell with a 12-second period and 786 units of energy, and again, glassy conditions with a light SE wind at 3 mph. The sets will have some punch, and the surface will be like a mirror.
Mid-week, things get a bit messy as the wind picks up. But then we jump ahead to the following week. Keep your eye on Tuesday morning the 28th. This is the real standout in the long-range. We've got a 5.9ft SW swell, a 13-second period, and the wind goes completely glassy from the WNW at 3 mph. The energy is moderate at 1186, but the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This one looks promising, but it's a way out, so don't book the time off just yet.
Now, for the big picture. From Thursday the 25th all the way through to Thursday the 30th, the swell is pumping in at 8.2ft and bigger. A few of those days have favourable winds, but the forecasts are flagging that the swell is predicted to be too big for this break. For a spot like Doring Bay, when that SW groundswell hits over 10ft, it's just too much. It'll be a washing machine. On the 29th, we get a 20-second period swell, which is exceptionally long, but with a cross-shore wind, it's gonna be lumpy and tough to manage. That 30th of July has a 13ft SW swell with an offshore wind, but again, the size is just out of control for this spot. That's expert-only, and even then, you'd want to be very sure of yourself and the tides.
So for the best, most surfable windows: Thursday morning the 16th and Friday morning the 17th are your top-tier, solid, clean options. And if you're feeling patient, that Tuesday morning the 28th is a long-range gem worth watching.
