The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a solid run of surf on the cards for Doring Bay, with the first swell arriving on Wednesday morning. The water’s a bit colder than normal for this time of year, sitting at 56°, about 3° cooler than average, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
Wednesday the 15th kicks off with a nice glassy morning. Swell is 4ft from the SW with a long 16-second period, giving the waves plenty of push and shape. The combined energy is moderate (739). The wind is dead calm, so it’ll be clean and lined up. A great way to start. By afternoon, the swell bumps up to 6ft from the same direction, but the wind swings cross-offshore and picks up, so it’s a bit more skittish.
Thursday the 16th brings the first standout. Morning sees a solid 8ft SW swell, 13-second period, and cross-offshore winds, offering excellent surf for experienced surfers. The combined energy jumps to 2275 (moderate). The paddle out might be a bit lazy between sets with that period, but the waves will have some punch. Afternoon gets a bit windier, so stick to the morning.
Friday the 17th is back to a more manageable 6ft, glassy conditions in the morning with a 12-second period. The energy is moderate (760). Clean and fun. Saturday the 18th morning is small but glassy at 4ft, though the period drops to 10 seconds, so it’ll be a bit mushier. The afternoon picks up again with 5ft and a longer 13-second period, cross-offshore wind making it neat.
Sunday the 19th is a good, clean session. Morning waves are 4ft from the SW, 12-second period, light cross-offshore breeze, and the combined energy is moderate (750). Very surfable.
Now, hold on for a bit of a lull. Monday the 20th is small and crossed-up, not much to recommend. Then Tuesday the 21st morning, the swell jumps to 8ft from the SSW with a 15-second period, but the wind is cross and the waves are messy. The afternoon is a big 12ft from the SW, but the wind goes cross-onshore, and the file says it’s too big for this break. For experts only, and even then, it’s on the edge.
Wednesday the 22nd is a write-off – strong onshore winds and messy, lumpy conditions. Thursday the 23rd morning has a massive 13ft SW swell with a 14-second period and glassy conditions, but again, it’s too big for this break. The combined energy is 5971 (strong to very strong). That’s a monster. Only the most experienced should even look at it.
The second week settles down. Friday the 24th morning is a good one: 5ft from the WSW, 12-second period, clean and cross-offshore. The energy is moderate (1437). A solid session. Saturday the 25th morning has a nice 8ft SW swell, 14-second period, clean, and cross-offshore. The combined energy is 2172 (moderate). That’s the standout for the second week – excellent for experienced surfers. Sunday the 26th morning is clean and offshore at 5ft, and Monday the 27th morning is a clean 5ft from the SW with a 15-second period. Both are good, clean options.
Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th are smaller but still surfable, with the 29th afternoon going glassy for a lovely 6ft session. Thursday the 30th morning has a 7ft SW swell, 16-second period, but a fresh breeze makes it choppy. The afternoon is a better bet: 7ft, 15-second period, clean and cross-offshore.
Overall, the best on offer is Thursday the 16th morning for the big, clean waves, and Saturday the 25th morning for the second week. Don’t bother with the 22nd, and watch the 21st and 23rd – they’re not for the faint-hearted.
Rusty.
