The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming our way for Doring Bay over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a really mixed bag, but the standout sessions are going to be those with clean conditions and the right size.
We kick things off this Sunday the 23rd of August morning – and it’s a beauty for the experienced crew. Doring Bay is firing with a 7 ft swell out of the WSW, a solid 13-second period, and light cross-off wind. The water is sitting at 55°, which is much colder than normal for this time of year – over two degrees colder, so you’ll want a good steamer. The combined swell energy is strong at (1436). This is excellent, but with the swell over 5 ft, it’s not for beginners. Crowds can pop up here sometimes, so get in early.
Sunday afternoon though, forget it. The wind swings and picks up, making things chop. The set-up looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Monday the 24th morning still offers a good option: 5 ft at 12 seconds, WSW swell, and light cross-off breeze again. The energy drops a bit to (742), but it’s clean and very surfable for intermediates.
Tuesday the 25th morning has size – 7 ft SW swell with a 14-second period (groundswell, meaning long lulls between sets), and combined energy at (2064). The wind is light but cross, so there’ll be a bit of bump. It’s pushing into expert territory size-wise, and it’s marginal because of that cross breeze.
Now the best on offer in the whole outlook, the one I’d circle on the calendar, is early Sunday the 30th of August. WAIT – let me re-read that. Actually, the 30th Sunday afternoon is too big for the break at 12 ft. Same for the 31st Monday morning: 8 ft, clean, cross-off, and excellent for experienced surfers. That’s a standout. (1549) energy, long-period WSW groundswell. It’s a reef break, so that long period works in its favour. It’s for experts only.
We then have some decent windows: 1st of September Tuesday morning, 6 ft SW, 11 seconds, light cross-off. Clean, (1086) energy. Good for strong intermediates.
The second week gets wild. Starting 3rd of September Thursday, we see a massive 20 ft to 21 ft swell with periods up to 16 seconds. Energy readings like (20696) – that’s extreme. These are only for the most experienced big-wave chargers, and even then, the wind is cross or cross-onshore, making it gnarly.
4th September Friday morning looks cleaner with 16 ft at 16 seconds and offshore wind – again, huge and for experts only.
5th September Saturday morning is a proper standout for the second week: 8 ft SSW swell, 13 seconds, clean offshore wind from the SE. (2505) energy. This is excellent for experienced surfers and the cleanest we see late in the run.
Things stay solid through the 6th and 7th September with 10 ft+ swells, clean winds, but very big. The 7th Monday morning has 10 ft SW, 13 seconds, and a gentle offshore ESE wind – (2628) energy. Another big-wave option for the crew that knows what they’re doing.
Overall, the first standout is the 31st Monday morning, and the second is the 5th September Saturday morning for that cleaner, manageable size. There are gaps of a few days in between where conditions are either too big or messy, but when it’s on at Doring Bay, it’s on.
Stay safe out there.
