The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the waves on the horizon for Doring Bay. We’ve got a proper mix of clean windows and some wild, angry days, so you’re gonna have to pick your moments. The water is sitting at 55°F, which is a solid 5°F colder than usual for this time of year – that’s properly chilly, so don’t be shy with the thick rubber.
The immediate forecast is pretty average for Saturday the 22nd. We’ve got some small, weak swell around 3ft to 4ft, but the wind is all over the place and it’s just going to be a cross-shore mess. Not worth getting too excited about. You can sit this one out.
Sunday the 23rd is where things start to wake up. Overnight the swell builds to a solid 7ft with a 13-second period from the WSW. The morning breeze is light from the SSE, keeping it clean. This is when it starts to look proper. This is a solid, surfable size for the experienced crew.
Monday the 24th keeps the fun rolling. Morning sees 6ft of SW swell with a 12-second pulse, and a light S breeze keeping the face clean. Get your dawn patrol in because the afternoon wind picks up and chops it out.
Tuesday the 25th is looking like a standout. The swell bumps up to 8ft from the SW with a long 14-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy right there. The morning is clean with a light SSE cross-offshore breeze. This is the one to circle on the calendar. The reef at Doring Bay is going to handle this long-period energy well. We’re talking powerful, well-shaped lines. But remember, this size is for intermediate to advanced surfers only.
After that, Wednesday the 26th is a step down in quality, with the swell easing to 5-6ft. The morning is clean-ish, but it’s nothing special. By Thursday the 27th, we’re dropping back to a small 3ft and it’s looking weak and jumbled. Not much to work with.
The weekend from the 29th onwards turns ugly. The wind swings onshore and builds, and by Sunday the 30th we’ve got a rising 10ft swell but with 25 mph onshore winds. That’s a washing machine. The same goes for Monday the 31st into Tuesday the 1st of September – we have great swell (8ft to 8ft) but the conditions are going to be a battle. Actually, wait – Monday the 31st morning looks perfect. It’s glassy, with clean 8ft SW swell and a 11-second period. That’s another solid early call for the experts. One of the best windows of the whole run. Tuesday the 1st morning is also clean with 8ft and a 12-second SW pulse. That’s another quality window.
The start of September brings a proper pulse of energy. The 2nd and 3rd look blown out with strong winds and building swell, culminating in a massive 16ft for Thursday the 3rd afternoon. That’s way too big for this place, and the wind is on it. Skip it.
Friday the 4th sees a huge, angry 11ft swell with 25 mph cross-shore winds. That’s more of a kitesurfing show than a surf session. It’s going to be a complete mess.
Things finally settle down for the final stretch. Saturday the 5th of September has a cleaner, smaller 5ft SSW swell in the morning. The afternoon goes glassy with a light NNE breeze and 4ft. That will be a lovely, mellow wave for the log if you’ve got the patience. Then Sunday the 6th brings a long-period 20-second WSW groundswell, but the wind is up again. If you can find shelter, there could be some bombs, but it’s a gamble.
So, if you’re picking your sessions, make it Tuesday the 25th morning or Monday the 31st morning. Those are your standouts. Big, clean, powerful swell on the reef. Get it while it’s good.
That’s all from me. Stay warm out there.
Rusty.
