Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Doring Bay over the next couple of weeks. We’ve got a solid run of swell coming through, but you’ve gotta pick your windows.

The pattern starts off with a bit of a lull in the surf quality for the first few days, but the real action kicks into gear from Wednesday the 15th. The standout period is definitely the morning of Thursday the 16th, and the morning of Wednesday the 15th is also a cracker. After that, there’s a bit of a mixed bag, with a few more good morning sessions before the wind turns ugly.

The water is sitting at 55.6°, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – about 3.4° cooler than average, so you’ll want a decent steamer.

Let’s get into it. The first real opportunity we see is on Monday the 13th in the morning. Doring Bay is clean, glassy with 2.6ft of SSW swell, around 10 seconds period. The combined energy is moderate at 215. It’s a small, clean start, but nothing to get too excited about.

Tuesday the 14th morning is also glassy, with 3.0ft of W swell and period bumping up to 11 seconds, giving a bit more push (energy 291). Good for a log, but you’re still waiting for the main event.

Wednesday the 15th morning is where it starts to get interesting. We’ve got 3.6ft of SW swell, but the period has jumped to 16 seconds – that’s proper groundswell. The energy reads 767, so it’s got some weight. The wind is light and cross-offshore, so it’s clean. This is a very good session, but the real gem is yet to come. That long period will make the waves stand up tall and have long gaps between sets, which is great for a reef break like Doring Bay.

Thursday the 16th morning is the absolute highlight of the whole forecast. Expect 8.2ft of SW swell, 13-second period, and a massive 2426 combined energy. The wind is light and cross-off, so it’s clean. This is excellent surf, but make no mistake – 8.2ft is only for experienced surfers. It’s going to be big and powerful, and the reef will be working hard. The afternoon drops to 7.9ft, but the wind goes cross-shore and gets a bit bumpy, so stick to the morning.

Friday the 17th morning still has 5.9ft SW swell, 12 seconds, and clean cross-off winds. Energy is 931. It’s a very good, solid session, a step down from Thursday but still pumping.

Saturday the 18th morning drops to 3.0ft WSW, but with a light cross-off, it’s a clean, fun-sized wave. Not a stand-out, but a nice morning surf.

Sunday the 19th morning we see a return of 5.9ft WSW swell, 12 seconds, clean cross-off winds, and 908 energy. That’s a very good session again, a solid Sunday morning.

Monday the 20th morning is a bit meh, but the afternoon is glassy again with 2.6ft SW. A tiny, clean evening session.

Now, here’s where it gets ugly. From Tuesday the 21st through to Thursday the 23rd, the wind swings hard onshore or cross-onshore from the NNW, blowing 19-25 mph. The swell is still big (6.9ft to 8.2ft) but the wind is trashing it. The energy is through the roof (over 2400), but the surf will be a complete mess. This is a kite-surfing setup, not a paddle-surfing one. Forget about it.

Friday the 24th morning we get a bit of relief. The wind goes cross-off from the NE, and we have 5.2ft WSW swell, 13 seconds. Energy is 1557, but the report says it’s marginal. The wind is moderate, so it’s clean but not pristine. Worth a look if you’re keen.

Saturday the 25th morning is clean but the wind is moderate, and the swell is 5.9ft SW. It’s a so-so session.

Sunday the 26th morning is a sneaky good one. The wind is offshore from the ESE, light, with 4.6ft WSW swell, 11 seconds, and 543 energy. It’s clean and very good quality. A nice surprise after the rough week.

Monday the 27th morning is another good one. Light offshore from the ESE, 4.3ft WSW swell, 12 seconds, and 633 energy. Clean and fun.

Tuesday the 28th afternoon finishes the run with a moderate offshore from the ESE, 3.3ft WSW swell, 13 seconds, and 681 energy. Clean and very good.

So, to wrap it up: if you’re an experienced surfer, the Thursday the 16th morning is your absolute best bet. Big, clean, powerful. For the rest of us, Wednesday the 15th morning and Sunday the 19th morning are the
