The Lowdown
Alright, let's break down what's cookin' for the next couple weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but we've got some solid windows if you're keen.
The main story is Doring Bay, and it's shaping up for a proper run of clean, fun waves. The water temp is about what you'd expect for this time of year, so no worries there. We've got a steady SW groundswell that loves this spot, and the wind is going to be our friend for a lot of it.
Friday the 17th is the kickoff. It's a bit cloudy, but the surf is clean at 6ft from the SW with a 12-second period. The combined energy is moderate (760), and there's a light cross-offshore breeze. That's a solid start. Saturday the 18th morning is a real gem. The wind goes glassy, and the swell is a clean 4ft from the SW. The energy is a touch lower (458), but the conditions are magic for intermediates. The afternoon gets a bit cross, but the swell gets a long 14-second period, so it's still worth a go.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th are both solid. Expect clean 4ft to 5ft of SW swell, with moderate energy in the 500-600 range. The wind stays cross-offshore, keeping the faces smooth. It's a great run of consistent, fun waves. Tuesday the 21st morning is smaller at 2ft, but that 15-second period will make it a much more interesting wave than the height suggests. The energy is still moderate (410). The afternoon gets a bit messy with a cross-onshore, so stick to the early session.
Now, we hit a rough patch. Wednesday the 22nd is a total loss. A strong NW wind is going to trash the place. The swell jumps to 10ft, but the energy is strong (3009), and it's going to be a lumpy, choppy mess. Not worth paddling.
Things turn around Thursday the 23rd. The wind swings back to a clean cross-offshore, and the swell is a solid 6ft from the SW (energy 1042). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The afternoon has a very long period (18 seconds) and the energy jumps up (2309), but there's a tide question, so keep an eye on it.
Friday the 24th through Sunday the 26th is a serious warning. The swell is simply too big for this break. We're talking 10ft to 12ft of SW groundswell, with energy readings in the 3000s and 5000s. The wind is offshore, and the waves will look clean, but it's a monster, expert-only zone. It will be a proper beast. Monday the 27th morning is also a mess with a near-gale wind, but the afternoon settles back into a clean, very good 5ft of SW swell.
The second week settles down. Tuesday the 28th has a very long period (20 seconds) WSW swell at 3ft, but it's a bit marginal. The rest of the week into the 31st and 1st of August offers a mix of clean, moderate SW/WSW swells between 3ft and 6ft, but the energy levels are moderate. The wind is often cross-offshore, so it'll be clean, but the quality is a bit more hit-and-miss. Watch the tide.
If you're a competent surfer, the first week is the winner. Friday the 17th to Monday the 20th is your best bet for clean, fun, and consistent waves. For the brave, Thursday the 23rd and the big weekend after are for experts only.
