The Lowdown

Alright, let’s see what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. We’ve got one spot in the mix, and it’s a proper reef setup that’s gonna have its moments.

First up, we’re talking about Doring Bay. It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, and it loves a good SW swell. The water is sittin’ at 55°, which is a couple of degrees colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want that extra rubber.

The action starts on Friday morning, the 21st. We’ve got a solid SW groundswell, 7ft, with a 12-second period pushing in. The combined energy is strong at 1130, and with a light S cross-off breeze, it’s gonna be clean. This is proper surf, but at that size, it’s really for the experienced crew. The wind shifts a bit in the afternoon, goes cross, and the energy drops, so the morning is the clear window.

Saturday the 22nd is a bit of a letdown. The swell drops right off to 3ft, but the morning is a standout for a different reason. It’s glassy. Dead flat calm, SW wind at 3 mph, and the swell is a clean 3ft from the SSW. The energy is moderate (528), but for a smaller board and some fun lines, it’s a real treat. The afternoon gets chopped by a cross-shore wind, so get in early.

Sunday the 23rd is the big one. The swell pumps back up to 7ft in the morning, but it’s a WSW direction with a very long period of 13 seconds. The energy is huge at 1476. With a light SSE cross-off breeze, the conditions are clean. This is a powerful, long-period groundswell, and on a reef like Doring Bay, it’s gonna stack up nicely. It’s still for the experienced, but the quality is there. The afternoon holds size but the wind picks up to 16 mph, making it a bit more of a handful but still rideable.

Monday the 24th is a solid follow-up. Morning has 6ft from the WSW with a 12-second period, clean under a light S cross-off. Good energy (872). The afternoon gets ruined by a fresh 19 mph cross-shore, so it’s a morning mission.

Tuesday the 25th is another cracker. The swell is 6ft from the SW, but the period jumps to 14 seconds, and the energy is a massive 1778. The wind is light offshore from the ESE, making for some seriously clean, lined-up waves. This is the standout session. The afternoon holds size at 8ft, but the wind is a moderate cross-off, so it’s still on but a bit more challenging.

Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th are a drop-off. The swell backs off, and the winds are messy. There’s a glimmer on Thursday afternoon with a small 4ft SW swell and a clean light cross-off, but it’s pretty small.

Friday the 28th sees a weird one. The swell is only 3ft, but the period is 16 seconds – very long. With a strong NE cross-off, it’s clean but tiny. The afternoon picks up to 5ft but with a choppy cross-onshore, so it’s a write-off. Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th are a mixed bag. Saturday has onshore wind, but Sunday the 30th morning delivers again: 7ft SW swell, 12-second period, clean with a light SE cross-off. Energy is 1092, and it’s excellent for the experienced.

The first week of September sees a big ramp-up. Tuesday the 2nd is a monster: 10ft SW swell, but the wind is light onshore, and the energy is 3757. It’s just too big for this break, and the same goes for the afternoon. Wednesday the 3rd is still huge at 10ft, but with a strong cross-shore wind, it’s a mess and dangerous. Thursday the 4th is the last chance for a big one, with 8ft from the SW, but a strong offshore wind from the east keeps it clean. It’s still big, so only for the experts.

After that, the swell fades away into the 5th of September, with small, clean waves but nothing to write home about.

Best Bet: If you’re experienced, Tuesday the 25th morning is the pick. The 6ft SW groundswell with a 14-second period and light offshore wind is as good as it gets. For a smaller, fun session, Saturday the 22nd morning is a glassy gem.
