The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Doring Bay. This is a reef setup that’s exposed to the SW, and over the next couple of weeks, it’s a real mixed bag. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s some serious juice on the horizon if you’re patient.
The water’s sitting at 57°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year. You’ll want a decent wetsuit.
We’re starting off with a bit of a flat spell. Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th have some swell, but it’s messy with a cross-shore wind, and the conditions are just marginal. Honestly, not worth paddling out for. The combined energy is only moderate (596 to 463), and it’s all a bit half-hearted.
Things start to get interesting on Tuesday the 21st. The morning session is the real standout early on. We’ve got a clean 3 ft swell from the SSW, but the period is a cracking 15 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The wind is light and cross-offshore, making for clean waves. The combined energy is a solid 587, and it feels like a proper sneaky session. The reef will handle that long period nicely, so expect some well-shaped, powerful lines. Crowds are possible here, so get in early.
Now, hold onto your board. The real standout is Friday the 24th. The morning is forecast to be absolutely firing with a 10 ft SW groundswell, a period of 15 seconds, and a light offshore wind from the SE. The combined energy is a massive 4251 – that’s strong to very strong energy. This is expert territory only, no question. It will be too big for most, but if you’ve got the skills and the nerve, this is the session of the forecast period. The afternoon stays big but the wind turns cross-shore, so it’ll get a bit chunkier.
Saturday the 25th is still excellent for experienced surfers. The swell drops slightly to 8 ft with a 13-second period, and the wind is offshore again in the morning. Clean, powerful, and a proper step down from Friday. The combined energy is still a strong 1982.
There’s a big gap of poor conditions from the 26th through to the end of the forecast. Sunday the 26th has a strong NE wind blowing, and while the swell is there, it’s not worth it. The only bright spot in that second week is Monday the 27th. The morning is glassy, with a clean 4 ft swell from the SW and a 13-second period. The combined energy is 1169. It’s a small, clean, and fun window for a quick paddle before the onshore winds roll in.
After that, it really fades. The swell drops off, the winds get messy, and by the end of the first week of August, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves with poor conditions. The last few days of the forecast are a write-off, with combined energy dropping below 300 and onshore winds.
So, to wrap it up: the absolute best is Friday the 24th for the big dogs, but it’s expert only. Next best is the morning of Tuesday the 21st for a cleaner, more manageable session, and the glassy morning of Monday the 27th for a sneaky solo paddle. Get out when you can.
Rusty.
