Imperial Version
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down Doring Bay.
Doring Bay is a reef break that likes a SW swell, and it’s fairly consistent, so that’s a good start. Water temp is about normal for the season.
We’ve got a bit of a wait. The first real go is Thursday the 9th. Thursday morning is the pick of the early period, with a solid 8ft SW groundswell (14-second period) and a light cross-offshore breeze. That’s excellent for experienced surfers, and the energy is pumping at 2383. You might see a few other heads out there, but it’s worth it.
Thursday afternoon gets a bit cross-shore and messy. Friday the 10th is a no-go with a cross-on wind. Saturday the 11th morning is the next real highlight – a clean 6ft SW swell with a 12-second period and an offshore easterly. Glassy. The energy is down to 1152, but it’s clean and good for an intermediate surfer.
The surf drops off through Sunday and Monday. Sunday the 12th morning is a clean 4ft but small. Monday the 13th morning is tiny and glassy. There’s a lull through the middle of the week with small, weak swells. The 16th of July sees a new 7ft pulse, but it’s blown out by a fresh 30 km/h southerly wind.
The real standouts are in the second week. The 21st of July (Tuesday) has a massive 10ft SW swell, but it’s too big for the break – expert-only, and the wind is cross-shore. The 23rd of July (Thursday) is the one. Thursday morning offers a 8ft SW groundswell with an 18-second period, an offshore easterly wind, and exceptional conditions. The combined energy is a massive 6803. With that long period, it’s a heavy, powerful groundswell, but it’s a reef, so it’ll handle it. Experts only. Thursday afternoon jumps to 15ft, which is just too big and messy.
So, the best bets are Thursday morning the 9th for a clean, powerful session, and Thursday morning the 23rd of July for a proper heavyweight groundswell if you’re skilled enough. The long-range 23rd is the one to watch, but it’s a promise, not a guarantee.
Rusty.
