Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Doring Bay has in store for us over the next couple of weeks.
The first few days are a bit of a write-off, with small, weak swell and questionable conditions. But hold onto your boards, because from early next week we’ve got a solid pulse of SW groundswell that’s going to fire this reef setup right up. The water's sitting at about 56°F, which is a touch colder than normal for this time of year, so maybe zip that chest zip up a bit higher.
The real standout action kicks off on Monday the 6th. Monday morning seeing 7ft of WSW swell, with a 12-second period and a light ENE breeze keeping things clean. That's a solid session for the experienced crew, with the combined energy up at a strong 1071. The afternoon holds similar size at 7ft, and though the wind swings a little, it's still cross-off and the wave quality will be there.
Tuesday the 7th morning is the pick of the whole run for me. Glassy conditions, 6ft of SW groundswell with a 13-second period, and the wind is a slight easterly at just 3 mph. It's going to be clean as a whistle, the reef will be working, and the energy reading of 1288 means there's plenty of push behind those sets. With the longer period, this is prime Doring Bay—lines wrapping in with purpose. Crowds can show up here sometimes, but on a Tuesday morning with that quality, you might just have it to yourself.
Wednesday morning the 8th keeps the run of quality going with 7ft of SW swell at 13 seconds, clean under a light SSE cross-off breeze. That's right in that sweet spot for an intermediate to step up. The energy is thumping at 2021.
Thursday the 9th morning brings the biggest swell of this first wave, 8ft of SW at 14 seconds, with clean conditions under a light southerly. That's expert territory, and with that kind of energy—2541—this is a proper day for the brave. The reef will be handling it beautifully.
Now, things start to drop off and get messy from Friday the 10th through the weekend, with onshore winds and dropping swell. That run of poor conditions stretches into the following week, with only small, weak pulses through the middle of July.
But then, hold on. We get another interesting window around Thursday the 16th. Morning shows 7ft of WSW with a solid 13-second period, but the wind is a fresh southerly at 22 mph. It's cross-off, so it’ll be clean, but that wind is howling. The energy is strong at 1391. This could be wild. Friday the 17th looks even more extreme, with the morning showing a huge 10ft of SW swell and 19 mph offshore winds. The afternoon pumps up to 13ft, with a combined energy of 4002. That is absolutely massive. Even for experienced surfers at Doring Bay, this is too big and too powerful. This is a look-at-from-the-cliffs kind of day, not a paddle-out day. The swell direction is on the money, but the size is just too much.
Saturday the 18th morning drops back to a more manageable 8ft under offshore winds, but that's still a solid session for the experienced crew only.
Out of all of this, the absolute best on offer for a classic, clean, powerful surf is Tuesday the 7th morning. That's the one to circle on the calendar.
Rusty, signing off.
