The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, lookin’ at the next couple of weeks for Doring Bay. This is a solid reef setup that’s gonna pump through a few different phases, but you gotta be patient and pick your moments. The water’s runnin’ a bit colder than usual at 56°F for this time of year, an anomaly of -3°F, so you’ll want a decent wetsuit.
We’re not looking at much to start. The first real chance to get wet is on Thursday the 16th of July, but it’s a bit of a write-off with a 8ft SW swell and a 20 km/h cross-shore wind making things choppy and messy. The combined energy is a massive 1806, so there’s plenty of push, but the quality’s just not there. You’ll be better off waitin’.
Friday the 17th steps it up a notch. The morning session is the stand-out from the early part of the forecast. A 6ft SW swell (12-second period) with a light 5 km/h cross-offshore wind from the south will have it clean and lined up. The combined energy is 826. By the afternoon, it’s still clean with a 5ft SW swell and a light 10 km/h cross-offshore breeze. This is a solid day for a surf.
Saturday the 18th of July is the absolute gem in the short term. The morning is pure magic: glassy conditions, zero wind, and a nice 4ft SW swell with a 10-second period. The energy is 458, and it’ll be clean and fun. The afternoon drops off a bit, but that morning window is the best on offer for the first week. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so expect a few locals out for that glassy session.
Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 21st is a bit of a mixed bag. The swell hangs around 4ft to 5ft with a SW direction, but the winds keep shifting and bringing a bit of chop. Monday morning the 20th is worth a look with glassy conditions and a 4ft SSW swell, but the energy is moderate at 580. The rest of the days are just marginal.
Now, things get interesting but also scary. From Wednesday the 22nd of July right through to Saturday the 25th, the swell absolutely pumps up, hitting 12ft to 13ft from the SW. This is proper big-wave territory, and the combined energy goes through the roof with values up to 7136. The wind is mostly cross-offshore and clean, but this is serious. For experienced surfers only. If you’re not solid, don’t even think about it. This setup might be better for kite surfing than paddle surfing if it’s too much.
Sunday the 26th of July is a turning point. The swell drops to 7ft from the SW (14-second period) with a 10 km/h cross-offshore breeze from the NE. Clean, powerful, and the combined energy is 3406. This is an excellent session for experienced surfers. Monday the 27th is also a cracker with a 8ft SW swell and glassy conditions in the morning, then clean cross-offshore in the afternoon. Tuesday the 28th offers a glassy afternoon session with a 8ft WSW swell, but the period is 15 seconds, so it’ll be a bit more walled up.
The final highlight is Wednesday the 29th of July. The afternoon is glassy with a 4ft SSW swell and a very long 17-second period. The combined energy is still 2619, so it’s packing a punch for its size. This is a great session for a point or reef wave, but at a beach break, that long period might make it close out a bit. Still, glassy and clean is a winner.
From the 30th of July onwards, the wind turns onshore and messy, so the quality drops off. The swell is still there, but it’s a rough end to the run.
Overall, the best windows are the morning of Saturday the 18th for a fun, clean session, and then the 26th through the 29th for the bigger, more powerful stuff. Pick your days, watch the tides, and you’ll score.
