The Lowdown
Yo, Rusty here. Let’s talk about Doring Bay. This reef setup is the only game in town for the next 16 days, and it’s a bit of a mixed bag. The water’s sitting at 56°, which is a solid 3° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s a noticeable chill, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The first real chance to get wet kicks off on Sunday the 19th, but it’s a bit of a tease. We’ve got a 4 ft SW swell with a moderate 12-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore breeze and the wave energy is weak (536). The call is marginal, so it’s more of a paddle-out to check the conditions than a serious session.
Monday the 20th morning is where it gets interesting. The wind drops to glassy, almost nothing, with a clean 6 ft SW swell. The period dips a bit to 10 seconds, but the energy is building (738). That glassy wind is the big win here – it’ll be clean and smooth. This is a standout, but it’s a short window; the afternoon gets messy again.
Tuesday the 21st morning is another sneaky good one. The swell drops to 3 ft, but it’s a long-period 15-second groundswell from the SSW. That’s the kind of energy that lines up beautifully on a reef. The cross-offshore wind keeps it clean. The energy is moderate (587), but for a smaller wave, that’s plenty. It’ll be a fun, peelable wave.
Thursday the 23rd morning is a real treat. Glassy conditions again, with a 6 ft SW swell and a solid 12-second period. The energy is solid (880). This is one of the best on offer – clean, head-high, and with that reef to groom it. Crowds? It says “sometimes” busy, so you might have company, but it’s Doring Bay, so it’s not a circus.
Saturday the 26th morning is a bit of a wildcard. The swell is 6 ft, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-offshore, which will keep it clean but a bit bumpy. It’s a workable session, but not the pick of the bunch.
Friday the 24th is a big red flag. The swell jumps to 10 ft from the SW with a long 14-second period. The energy is massive (3999), but the note says it’s too big for this break. This is strictly for experts only, and even then, it’s dangerous. The combined energy (3999–3126) is intense, and the reef will be a washing machine. Kite surfers might have a field day, but for paddle surfers, it’s a stay-on-the-beach day.
Sunday the 27th is a bit of a washout with strong cross-shore winds, but the morning might offer a choppy 5 ft ride.
Tuesday the 28th morning is another expert-level session. A 7 ft SW swell with a 10-second period, but the wind is a clean offshore. The energy is high (1577), and the note says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. This is a standout for the second week – a powerful, hollow wave on the reef, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
Sunday the 2nd of August afternoon is a solid call. A 7 ft SW swell, 14-second period, and a clean offshore wind. The energy is strong (1712), and the note says it’s excellent for experienced surfers. This is a proper groundswell session for the crew that knows this break.
Overall, the best windows are Monday the 20th morning and Thursday the 23rd morning for the cleanest, most accessible waves. For the bigger, more powerful stuff, Tuesday the 28th morning and Sunday the 2nd of August afternoon are the ones for the experienced crowd. The gap between the 20th and 23rd has a few days of onshore junk, so pick your windows carefully.
Stay stoked,
Rusty.
