Alright mates, let’s get stuck into this one. The gem on the table for the next couple of weeks is Doring Bay, a reef set-up that’s going to be the main show. It’s an exposed spot picking up a nice long-period SW groundswell, and for a solid run of days, it’s going to be worth the paddle.
The water is sitting at 55.8°, which is a bit colder than you'd expect for this time of year, about 2.9° off the norm. It’s a touch nippy, so a good wetsuit is a must.
The best bet kicks off from Friday, July 17th. Friday morning is looking choice: glassy conditions with a light ESE breeze, and a solid 5.9ft SW swell at 12 seconds. The combined energy is a solid moderate punch at (826). The afternoon holds a clean 5.2ft with a cross-off wind, but the glassy morning is the pick.
Saturday the 18th is another cracker. Glassy again in the morning, with a clean 4.3ft SW swell. It’s a little smaller, but the wind will be off the land and the waves will have a nice shape.
Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th keep the quality run going. We’re looking at clean, cross-off winds with chest to head-high sets. Sunday has a nice 3.9ft to 4.3ft SW swell (570 to 588 combined energy), and Monday is similar at 4.6ft (597).
If you want the absolute standout, it's Friday morning the 17th. The glass, the swell size, and the direction all align. Crowds are possible at this spot, so get in early.
After that, we have a few days where the wind picks up, but keep an eye on the morning of Wednesday the 22nd of July. It’s a big one but it’s powerful. A 7.9ft SW swell (2445) is blowing through with a cross-on wind, creating some proper messy conditions. That afternoon, it gets even bigger – 9.8ft – but it's onshore and blown out. Not so good for a normal surf.
Now, looking further ahead, the 24th of July (Friday) is a monster. We're looking at a 9.8ft SW groundswell with a period of 16 seconds, and combined energy of (4569). The wind is light offshore in the morning, but this is a wave for experts only. That’s a serious amount of water heading for the reef.
The next morning, Saturday the 25th, is still big at 7.9ft, but the wind is a strong 18.6 mph cross-off. It’s clean, but the power is immense. Again, not for the faint-hearted. Then Sunday the 26th morning offers a solid 6.9ft SSW swell with a clean offshore wind, but the period drops to 9 seconds. It’s still a good option for experienced surfers.
After that, the run gets choppy and windy through the end of July. The morning of Wednesday the 29th is a bit of a surprise—glassy calm with a clean 3.9ft SW swell (595). That's a nice little window. The rest of the week is messy with strong winds from the NE.
We finish the run into August 1st with a weird one. A tiny 1.6ft swell from the west with a massive 23-second period (400 combined energy). That's a super long-period groundswell that’s going to be too straight for the beachies and might only work on a very specific reef or point if it manages to wrap in. The afternoon shows a bigger 4.3ft westerly (2109), but it’s cross-shore and messy.
So, to wrap it up, the first few days are pure gold. Get on it early the morning of July 17th. The second week has some big, powerful swell for crew who know what they’re doing, especially around the 24th. But the clean, classic surfing is all in the first run.
Stay stoked.
