The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let's break this one down in feet and miles per hour.

Looking at the whole 16-day run for Pastures, there’s some serious swell energy coming through, but you gotta be patient and know when to go. The water's running about 56°F, which is a bit colder than usual for this time of year – you’ll feel it.

It kicks off Tuesday, August 4th. Tuesday morning is your best early bet: a 4ft swell from the southwest with an 11-second period, moderate energy at 518, and a light cross-off breeze from the south at 6 mph. It’s clean and small – a great little window for a beginner to get wet. That afternoon, the wind switches and the quality goes out the window.

Wednesday the 5th and Thursday the 6th are pretty rough—strong cross-on winds and choppy conditions, despite the swell building. But Thursday afternoon, it all turns around. The wind shifts cross-off from the south, the swell jumps to 10ft from the southwest at 13 seconds, with strong energy at 3097. It’s clean, powerful, and not for beginners. This is for experienced surfers only.

Friday, August 7th morning is the real standout. Clean skies, cross-off wind from the SSE at 9 mph, and a solid 10ft SW swell with a 14-second period. The energy is pumping at 3644. This is excellent, powerful surf for those who know the ropes. The long period means longer lulls between sets, but the waves have proper shape and punch.

Friday afternoon gets even bigger—12ft swells with energy at 4493. It’s too big for Pastures at that point, even with the favorable wind.

The second week starts to taper off. Monday, August 10th morning offers a chance: offshore wind from the ESE at 12 mph, a 7ft S swell at 10 seconds, and moderate energy at 1443. It’s clean and more manageable, though the southerly direction might not line up as well.

From Tuesday the 11th onward, the surf really fades. We’re looking at weak, small waves (energy in the 200-700 range) with messy wind through the middle of the month. There's a gap of several days where there isn’t anything worth paddling for.

Then around Monday, August 17th, another massive pulse rolls in – 13ft from the WSW with a 15-second period and an insane energy of 6625. That’s huge and dangerous, way too big for Pastures.

The days after that, through the 19th, keep the swell in the 8ft to 10ft range with cross-off winds, but the quality is only marginal. It just isn’t coming together clean.

So here’s the takeaway: Friday morning, August 7th is your absolute best call. Big, clean, powerful. Thursday afternoon is your second-best option for the experienced crew. The rest of the window is either too small, too windy, or too big for a quality session.

Rusty.
