Dungeons Surf Forecast and Surf Report

Alright, mate. Rusty here. Let’s talk about Dungeons.

We’ve got some proper activity on the charts for Dungeons, but it’s not all smooth sailing. This is a sheltered south-west facing reef that only breaks occasionally, so when it lines up, you sit up and pay attention. The water temp is currently sitting around 58°, which feels a bit colder than normal for this time of year, so you’ll want a good winter suit.

The first real window of opportunity kicks off on Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. We’re looking at a clean 7ft SW swell with a 12-second period and a moderate offshore breeze from the NNW. The combined energy is solid at 1283, giving the place some real push. It’s not a massive day, but it’s clean and rideable. Keep in mind though, this break is inconsistent, so you might have to wait for sets.

Thursday morning, July 23rd, is a bit of a write-off. The swell’s still there at 7ft SW, but the wind goes cross-off from the north at 19 mph, and there’s light rain. It’s messy enough to make it questionable.

Now, if you’re an experienced surfer, clear your schedule for Friday morning, July 24th. This is the standout. The swell bumps up to 12ft from the SW with a 14-second period – that’s groundswell with serious legs. The combined energy is pumping at 4555, and the wind is dead calm – glassy conditions. This is a big, powerful wave at a reef, so it’s strictly for the experienced crew. The long period will give you clean, well-shaped lines, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.

Saturday morning, July 25th, offers a smaller but rideable 6ft SW swell. The wind is light and onshore from the southeast though, so it won’t be as clean as Friday. By Saturday afternoon, it’s 8ft, but cross-onshore winds make it choppy.

From Sunday, July 26th, right through to the start of August, the conditions turn pretty ugly. Onshore winds from the SE start cranking, hitting 28 mph by Monday afternoon, July 27th, with a jumbled 13ft S swell and short 10-second period. The energy is high at 3995, but with the wind howling onshore and the surf quality poor, you’re better off sitting this one out. This stretch of poor surf looks set to last for over a week, right into early August.

There’s a little glimmer on Monday morning, August 3rd. The swell drops to 4ft from the WSW with a 11-second period, but it’s glassy – dead calm from the NW. It’s not big, but clean and surfable, especially if you’re patient.

The real wildcard, though, is Wednesday, August 5th. Mark it down, but don’t hold your breath just yet. In the afternoon, we’re looking at a massive 21ft WSW swell with a very long 18-second period. The combined energy rockets to 23809. By Thursday, August 6th, it peaks at 26ft from the WSW with a 15-second period and fresh offshore winds from the NW in the afternoon. The energy hits a whopping 29580. This is huge, powerful, and lined up. For a reef like Dungeons, that’s an expert-only, life-changing kind of swell. But it’s a long way out, so we’ll see how it shapes up.

For the second week, the outlook is mostly poor conditions with strong onshore winds, apart from that one glassy morning on the 3rd and the promise of the big swell on the 5th. It’s a waiting game.
