The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
We’re looking at a solid run of surf at Off The Wall starting this Sunday morning, the 23rd of August. The swell is a solid 8ft from the WSW with a long 13-second period, packing a strong combined energy of 1721. That’s a lot of power, and with a light cross-offshore breeze, it’s going to be clean and lined up. This is a reef break that knows how to handle a SW groundswell, and with that size and direction, it’s going to be a proper session. But it’s advanced-only territory at this size, and it can get crowded, so expect some company. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing wild.
Monday the 24th drops off a touch. Morning sees 6ft from the WSW, still a decent 11-second period, but the wind picks up a bit, making it a little less perfect. Still clean, but the energy drops to 793. Afternoon is smaller and more marginal.
Now, Tuesday the 25th is the standout. The morning brings 8ft from the SW with a 14-second period and a combined energy of 2192. That’s a proper groundswell. The wind is offshore and clean, moderate but still good. This is the best session of the first week. The afternoon stays solid at 7ft with the same long period, but the wind freshens up, making it a bit more challenging but still offshore.
Wednesday the 26th is interesting. 8ft from the SE, but the period is a short 8 seconds. That’s a windswell or a mix. The energy is still high at 1700, but those short-period waves are a bit more crumbly and less predictable. Still, with light winds, it’ll be fun, just not as good as Tuesday.
Thursday the 27th drops right down. Morning is a mess with cross-on wind, but the afternoon turns glassy. 5ft from the S with an 11-second period, energy of 638. It’ll be small and clean, a good option for a cruiser session.
Friday the 28th is glassy all day. 3ft in the morning with a very long 16-second period, and 4ft in the afternoon with a 14-second period. That long period means the waves will have plenty of push for their size, but at a beach break, it might be a bit too straight. At a reef like Off The Wall, it’ll be a treat. The energy is moderate.
Saturday the 29th is a write-off. Cross-on wind and poor conditions. Skip it.
Sunday the 30th brings back some size. 8ft from the WSW with a 9-second period, energy of 1452. The period is short, so it’s not as good as the previous week, but it’s clean with cross-off wind. The afternoon gets windier and more marginal.
The run from Monday the 31st into Tuesday the 1st of September sees a big jump. Tuesday morning has 10ft from the SW with a 14-second period and a huge energy of 3020. That’s a serious swell. The wind is light and onshore, but the size is real. This is for experts only – over 8ft, it’s a different beast.
The real monster hits on the 2nd of September. Wednesday afternoon: 13ft from the WSW with a 14-second period, and a combined energy of 6896. The wind is offshore and clean. This is an exceptional swell for expert surfers. The biggest, most powerful set of the entire forecast. If you’re good enough, that’s your day.
Thursday the 3rd is blown out with a near gale. Friday the 4th is still big at 10ft but onshore and messy. Saturday the 5th has clean offshore wind with 13ft from the SW, but the wind is strong, making it hard to paddle into. That’s big-wave territory.
After that, the swell remains sizeable but the wind and rain get in the way. The 6th and 7th of September have huge numbers but the conditions aren’t clean. There’s no other standout that matches the pure quality of the 25th of August or the raw power of the 2nd of September.
So, if you’re picking one, go for the 25th of August morning – it’s the best combination of size, period, and clean offshore wind. For the big-wave crew, the 2nd of September afternoon is the one to circle.
Rusty.
