The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the next two weeks of surf for Off The Wall (Oahu). This is a reef break that needs a solid SW groundswell and offshore winds to really light up, and it’s looking like a ripper of a run coming through.
The week starts off pretty average. Monday the 20th is a write-off – we’ve got a 6 ft cross-on swell from the SW with a short period, just messy and not worth your time. The combined energy is weak (620), and the wind is all wrong. It’s a bit of a slow start, but don’t stress, it’s about to get a whole lot better.
Tuesday the 21st is where it starts to get interesting. A new SSW groundswell rolls in, 8 ft with a gorgeous 14-second period, and the energy jumps right up to a solid 2238. The morning is absolute glass – not a breath of wind. That’s the kind of session you dream about. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off breeze. This is a standout for the experienced crew. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a spring suit should do you fine.
Wednesday the 22nd holds the quality. Another glassy morning with 7 ft SW groundswell at 12 seconds. The energy is still strong at 1423. The afternoon gets a bit lumpy with an onshore breeze, but the morning is a gem.
Thursday the 23rd is a step back – cloudy, onshore winds, and the swell drops to 5 ft with a short period on the morning. The afternoon bump up to 7 ft but the wind is still cross-on. It’s not the best.
Now, here’s the real standout. Friday the 24th. The morning is a beast. 12 ft of SW groundswell, 14-second period, offshores, and the combined energy is a massive 4431. This is proper heavy, expert-only territory. If you’ve got the skills and the balls, that’s the session of the window. The afternoon stays clean but drops to 10 ft.
Saturday the 25th is still a top-tier option. Morning is 6 ft with offshore winds and clean, afternoon is 8 ft with a cross-off breeze. Both sessions have solid energy (1923 and 1710). This is the kind of weekend you get the crew together for.
Sunday the 26th through to Tuesday the 28th keep the good times rolling. Clean, glassy mornings, and solid 6 ft+ swell with that SW groundswell holding period. Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, but when it’s this good, you’ll have to share the peak.
Wednesday the 29th is another cracker – 8 ft, clean offshore winds, and the energy is pumping (2455 and 2535). This is a classic Off The Wall day.
The week of the 30th starts to fade. Thursday the 30th is still surfable but the energy drops (1174) and the wind is a bit messy. From Friday the 31st through to Sunday the 3rd of August, it’s a poor run. Strong onshore winds, rain, and the swell drops to 3 ft to 5 ft. The energy is weak (under 800). It’s a washout for paddle surfing – honestly, it’s more of a kite-surfing setup with those cross-onshore winds.
Then, hold onto your board. Monday the 4th of August? The forecast is showing a massive 13 ft to 15 ft WSW groundswell with a 15-second period. The energy is extreme (6881 and 15547). That’s a monster. The morning is glassy, but the afternoon is too big for this break. This is a rare, heavy, expert-only swell. It’s promising, but it’s a long way out, so keep an eye on the charts. Don’t get your hopes up too high just yet.
Overall, the first week is dynamite, especially from the 21st to the 25th. The second week is a slow grind until that possible bomb on the 4th.
Rusty.
