The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s coming up for Off The Wall.

The window opens on Wednesday the 15th, but it’s a slow start. The morning is a bit of a write-off with a small 5ft SW swell and a weak, messy cross-on breeze. Not worth paddling out for. The real action kicks off Wednesday afternoon though – the SW swell jumps to 8ft with a 16-second period, and the wind goes glassy. That’s clean, lined-up reef waves pushing decent energy. It’s only for the experienced crew, as that size is a handful for beginners. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no shock when you get in.

Thursday the 16th holds that same 8ft SW groundswell, glassy in the morning, clean in the afternoon. Great conditions for a proper session. The combined energy is strong (2381 in the morning, 1645 in the afternoon), so you’ll feel the push. Friday the 17th is a step down in size to 7ft, but the wind goes offshore in the morning. Clean, manageable, and the crowd factor is only sometimes an issue here. Saturday the 18th drops off to 3ft – too small for me to get excited about, though it’s glassy.

Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th bring back a solid 6ft to 7ft SW swell with clean conditions. These are good, reliable days for experienced surfers. The combined energy sits in the moderate to strong range (around 1000-1100), and the period holds around 11-12 seconds. Good shape.

Now, the standout that’s got me buzzing is Tuesday the 21st. The swell jumps to a massive 13ft from the SW, with a 15-second period, and the morning is glassy. The combined energy is a massive 6512 – that’s very strong. This is exceptional surf for expert surfers only. The reef will be handling that long-period groundswell perfectly, and if you’ve got the skill, it’s a session to remember. The afternoon gets a bit onshore and messy, so hit the early.

Wednesday the 22nd is a right-off. Strong, powerful 10ft to 12ft swell but with a fresh, lumpy cross-onshore wind at 18-22 mph. That’s a washing machine. Not for surfing – maybe kite surfers would have a look.

Thursday the 23rd cleans up with a 13ft SW swell and a moderate offshore SSE wind. That’s expert territory again, with very strong energy (5248). The wind is clean, but the size is intimidating. Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th are still big, but the wind turns cross-onshore, making it choppy and messy. The energy is huge (up to 7469 on Saturday afternoon), but the quality drops.

The second week, from the 26th, the swell direction shifts around. It’s a bit all over the place – some S, some W, short periods. Not the same quality. The real second-week standout pops up on Tuesday the 28th and Wednesday the 29th. Another big pulse: 12ft to 13ft SW, 15-second period, glassy or clean. The combined energy is massive (6650 to 7790). That’s as good as it gets for experts. The wind is light and clean, and the waves will be holding that perfect reef line.

So, the best on offer? Tuesday the 21st morning for the first week, and Tuesday the 28th through Wednesday the 29th for the real standout in the second week. Both are big, powerful, glassy, and for experts only. Get on it.

Rusty.
